Nightwatch

Dear CHRIST. I've seen so many wannabe characters in my day, and this one STILL shocks me. Like, who on Earth did they think they were kidding?

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (+9 Costume, DC 19), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +2 (+8 Costume, +3 Impervious), Fortitude +6, Will +3

Complications:
Motivation (Trying to Escape Fate)- Nightwatch was given his suit by an older version of himself (who had died). He wants to avoid this future (Spoiler Alert: He doesn't).
Secret (Actually a Villain)- Recent evidence suggests that Kevin Trench is the villain known as "Nighteater", who cast a spell making everyone THINK he was the heroic Nightwatch. He has reformed, and doesn't want anyone to discover the truth.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 49 / Defenses: 12 (123)

-Hahahahah WOW. Marvel wasn't even REMOTELY subtle about this one, were they? Possibly the most embarassing rip-off in comics history (aside from MAYBE some members of Cyberforce or a few Liefeld characters), Nightwatch came into the Spider-Man group of books/friends in the mid-1990s right after the Image Exodus, and brought with him some creepy characteristics, a black & white costume, a familiar flowing red cape, and some nihilistic tendencies. Turns out, he was a scientist who was victimized by bad guys, but saved by a future version of himself, who then died. Spending the rest of his time trying to escape his fate, he got his own Limited Series and did some junk, as Marvel desperately tried to make something of this Spawn rip-off as a Take That to Todd McFarlane, but it wasn't to be. Just too stupid, and with too lame a power-set, he was killed by two E-League villains (I mean, Polestar & El Toro Negro? What in the hell have THEY ever done?) in the most easy way possible (one nullified his suit with magnetism, the other shot him), in possibly the most hilarious example of casually offing somebody in history.

-A Retcon was introduced in She-Hulk that featured Kevin Trench as a VILLAIN, who realized that villains never win, and therefore tried to become a superhero. He casts a spell (which murdered hundreds of inhabitants of a North Dakota town) so that everyone forgets he's a villain, and they instead remember "Nighwatch"- so some of his history may be completely inaccurate (in particular, Trench is actually alive)- he was therefore arrested. Since he's terrible, it doesn't matter that they retconned it, really.

-Nightwatch is a pretty classic case of a low-end PL 8 character who's dependent on his Battlesuit. Using the "1990s Handbook" Marvel produced a couple years back, Nightwatch stats up as a pretty-strong low-end superhuman who's a bit faster than a normal person and fairly durable, and also possessing a few little tricks (Dazzle, Multiattack Tentacles, low Flight) to make him stand out. He's also got some low-end Regeneration. So he's a bit of a challenge for some guys, but ultimately sucks pretty hard- he's low enough to get beaten by anybody in Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery. We-elll... maybe not The Shocker.

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +14, Fortitude +8, Will +4

Complications:
Involuntary Transformation (Hubert & Pinky)- Pinky, who is not evil like Hubert, can nullify the "Fusion" form and cause him to split back into the twins. Sometimes this won't work, however. Both have Strength 0, Stamina 1 & Agility 0, while Pinky has INT 0.
Disabled (Dwarfs)- Hubert & Pinky are dwarfs, and are thus shorter and weaker than most adult males.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 78 / Defenses: 12 (157)

-This bad guy is a combination of a pair of dwarf ("little people", not bearded axe-wielders) twins- a brilliant physicist (Hubert) and a humble janitor (Pinky). An accident with Hubert's device fused the twins together, and "Fusion" thus went on a rampage, absorbing energy everywhere he went. Spidey had some trouble with Fusion's ability to absorb damage and raise havoc everywhere he went, but Pinky's good nature won out in two instances- he forcibly split them in the first, and caused enough of an issue during an attempt to suck the energy out of a power planet in the second. Fusion later showed up in The Stranger's collection of oddities (you HAD to guess Mark Gruenwald would have used this guy), but that's basically it for him.

Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Motivation (Greed & Power)
Enemy (Spider-Man)- Markley's son was killed while imitating Spider-Man- Markley has thus declared war on Spidey, attempting to discredit and kill him.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 99 / Defenses: 9 (199)

-The second Fusion is a Spider-Man foe from Paul Jenkins' own Spidey book from the early 2000s. This guy lost his son because the boy was imitating Spider-Man, and swore vengeance- using his mutant powers, he specialized in fooling people into believing in things that weren't there, and making them think the damage was real. Imitating Thor and others, he beat the snot out of Spider-Man- "breaking" his neck- until a lucky instance (Spidey refused to give up the fight, and inadvertently moved his hand in defiance) made Pete realize that the damage wasn't actually there- he immediately recovered and fought back. Fusion next appeared using DOCTOR OCTOPUS of all people as a lackey, having apparently fooled him into thinking Fusion had genuine other powers. However, Octavius revealed he'd only played along to capitalize on Fusion's scheme, and promptly beat Mr. Markley within an inch of his life, leaving Spider-Man to defeat Octopus and come across Fusion's mangled body. He showed up in a later Thor story, committing suicide after Thor refused to resurrect Fusion's son.

-Fusion has some interesting powers, which seem sorta like Mind Control/Affliction-y, but are actually a powerful Illusion (and cease working like Illusions do once figured out). Unlike most Illusionists, he can convince people they've been injured to the point where damage can be actually fatal. The damage can take nearly any form (some cops are slain when they believe their equipment explodes; Spider-Man thinks his neck is broken and that he's been attacked by Captain America's Shield & Thor's Hammer), but goes away should the illusion be broken somehow. This makes Fusion a dangerous opponent, but VERY vulnerable- once somebody figures out his trick, he's now a PL 6.5 guy. Considering he's pissed off PL 11 Spider-Man and PL 12 Dr. Octopus, that's a bad thing.

Disabled (Crippled & Blind)- Madame Web has a medical condition called myasthenia gravis, which leaves her an invalid, dependent on her big chair thingie to keep her alive and help her poop and stuff. If removed from the chair, she will immediately begin dying. She is also blind.

Total: Abilities: -2 / Skills: 52--26 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 53 / Defenses: 5 (78)

-Madame Web is really damn high on the list of character concepts I hate. Telepathy is kind of a boring power in comics, as it allows for a few too many short-cuts for the hero unless weaknesses are imposed, and when you add Precognition to the set, it gets even worse. Her entire purpose was to lead Spidey places and have him do stuff in some big arc, but it (and her character) never amounted to anything. I had first seen her in the '90s toon, and she SUCKED there, too, just being an annoying mentor-type who said a bunch of vague stuff and boss the hero around, and get threatened by guys. Seriously- the whole "Riddle-Speaking, Know-It-All Pseudo-Mentor" thing is just a magnet for garbage stories.

-Initially, she is sought out by Spider-Man to help him find a kidnapping victim; the next time, he has to save her from The Juggernaut (the famous Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut! story). This is actually the most she does at first, however- she is next seen in The Gathering- gaining Immortality while Mattie Franklin gains powers and the identity of the new Spider-Woman. Web goes on to become Mattie's mentor, and even retains her mutant powers following M-Day, though it seems someone forgot she'd been de-aged in addition to becoming un-crippled- she's now just old and able to walk. In The Grim Hunt, both she and Mattie are killed by Sasha Kravinoff- Web transfers her blindness, and the power of prophecy, to Julia Carpenter.

-That's... actually not that much stuff, really. Hardly as annoying as I was imagining (though they tossed in a "I know your identity because of Psychic Stuff/Oh no now I forgot it because I nearly died that one time against Juggernaut" thing, giving us YET ANOTHER character to gain amnesia and forget Spidey's identity). It was in the CARTOON where it felt like she was everywhere: voiced by Stan Lee's wife, she constantly gave cryptic advice, and eventually led him to face The Beyonder in Secret Wars. Seriously, she's in almost the entire third season, usually being super-unhelpful and annoying, and then refusing to aid Spider-Man when he lost Mary Jane to a dimensional rift. Only at the VERY END of the series, after a massive story involving multiple Alternate Universe Spider-Men (hey, wait a minute...), does she agree to take Spidey with her to find Mary Jane (but not before letting him meet the real Stan Lee).

-Madame Web has high-powered Telepathy, but isn't really an offensive-minded character at all, requiring aid for the most minor of operations. She's smart, skillful and has lots of mental powers (Astral Form is basically Remote Sensing + Mental Communication, so that bit's easy), but can't do anything else.

And that does it for the Spider-Man re-posts! Well, almost. Turns out that there's a bunch of lesser names I've not built, so I'm getting to those today :).

After that, something Wicked this way comes.

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Motivation (Nothing In Particular)- Massacre pretty much just kills for the hell of it, and can't even really justify his own actions. He just kind of DOES stuff.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 13 (113)

-Massacre is a low-rent Dan Slott villain, and was pretty short-lived. He was a Wall Street exec who was set up to be killed, but the explosion only killed his wife and left a piece of shrapnel in his brain. Alive but now unable to feel any emotions, he was instituionalized, but broke out and started killing people- Spider-Man was barely able to stop him, owing to his recent loss of Spider-Sense and the villain's heavy artillery. Some bulletproof armor and magnetic webbing were needed as quickie-inventions to save the day. Later on, he escaped Ravencroft Insitute once more, killing side-Spidey-character Dr. Ashley Kafka (whom I've never seen) and more, before the Superior Spider-Man decides that this spree killer needs to be finished off once and for all- Doc-Ock-In-Spidey's-Body executes Massacre with his own gun, the villain claiming to feel one spark of emotion before the end. In a true-to-life reaction (judging by my cop best friend, who advocates for the killing of The Joker, among others), the police are like "yeah... good on you, bud".

-Massacre is a good signifier of Spider-Man's versatility as a main character- "Insane Wall Street Guy With Guns" is not a threat to Thor, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Superman or even really a Green Lantern. But to the decidedly NON-bulletproof Spider-Man he's actually a pretty solid threat, especially as the guy focuses on taking hostages and firing from behind cover with a massive arsenal. Given the "Parker Luck" Complication, Pete is down his Spider-Sense in their first struggle, too. The more ruthless Ock-Spidey is a bit more of a threat, and ends the villain in a hurry.

I recall looking them up and finding too little to go on- that doesn't seem to have changed much. Polestar literally did one thing and got shot, for example. Maybe worth the 33 seconds it would take to build such a goof, I guess :).

I think I enjoy the builds of random goofs the most. They do both have Appendix pages, at least.

-The Hypno-Hustler was a band-leader who was also a thief who hypnotized his audience into giving up their belongings- pretty much just what The Ringmaster does, except THIS guy's an outdated 1970s archetype instead of an outdated Old-Timey Circus archetype. He robs the club owner who "took him off the streets", then proceeds to hypnotize the audience at the disco (it was 1978, remember)- naturally, Peter Parker has been dragged there by his buddies (even though he was trying to study), and is the only one there who can resist the siren song of bitching disco music. He soon webs up his ears to block it out, and changes into Spider-Man. He finds the Hustler to be a difficult opponent (naturally- Spidey has a weakness against debuting villains, no matter HOW silly their gimmicks are), but manages to yank off his headphones, which were all that was keeping his own hypnotic tunes (from his Mercy Killers bandmates, who themselves were hypnotized to keep on singing) from overpowering HIM as well. He then webs up the Hustler and covers the singing Mercy Killers' mouths, saving the day.

-Tragically, the Hypno-Hustler was never seen again until decades later, in Spider-Man Unlimited as a joke background nobody. Really, this is EXACTLY the kind of guy who needs to be brought back repeatedly as a goofball villain, or a recurring character in one of those fun "Villains As Protagonists" stories.

-A not-half-bad fighter with a Hypnosis Gimmick, The Hypno-Hustler was a dangerous sort, but someone as clever as Petey can handle him.

-Huh, well I'll be damned- one of the guys from The List is actually a forgotten Spider-Man baddie, created by the original duo, Stan & Steve. He was Norman Osborn's college professor, and later became a partner in OsCorp- it was his early research that helped create the strength-enhancing Goblin Formula. Osborn discovered he was embezzling funds and had him arrested (this is probably before Osborn went evil; otherwise he'd have just murdered him), and came back to send Evil Robots after his ex-boss. He seemingly died of a heart attack, and was gone for eons (actually, eighteen years, because holy shit 1982 was as close to 1966 as we are to the year 2000 now) before suddenly returning with his brain waves having been transferred into a robot double.

-Now the Robot Master, he was destroyed by Spidey. Another huge gave (fourteen years), and he's a cyborg called "Gaunt"- apparently his original body had been fused to robotics, because why not? He eventually got out of that and came back wearing some robotic suits, but was typically defeated. Another five years went by (a new record!), and he came back with a sentient robot to kill Osborn, but was instead decapitated, his head being kept alive somehow. As an A.I., he attempted to take over New York's electrical grid, but a computer virus created by Spidey was uploaded into him. He later joins The Initiative program, having been rescued from his A.I. loop thing, but he later appears as a villain again.

-What a weird character- he's like the most half-assed of Stan & Steve's creations, and even the WRITERS never use him (he's like Molten Man in that regard), but he pops up here and there as a "hey, remember THIS guy?" type of baddie, but only for quickie stories. He's really not terribly interesting, anyways- he's your everyday Kill-O-Bot Inventor, and Alistair Smythe or even Norman frickin' Osborn is better at that.

-A generic Mad Scientist, I included his occasional Cyborg enhancements, though sometimes he wears similar gear as a Removable Suit. His primary threat, though, comes from his Robot Creations.

I vaguely remember this guy as the adversary of Christopher Bennett's Spidey novel, Drowned in Thunder.
