-Golden Archer is pretty obvious; he's just Green Arrow, complete with a relationship with the group's sonic-voiced girl! He was first named Hawkeye to oppose the purple-clad Avenger, but soon switched with a last name & codename inspired by a certain famous chain of restaurants.

-Golden Archer initially seemed like a generic party-animal type hero- playing the ladies' man, he'd hooked up with Lady Lark, was pals with Dr. Spectrum, and generally made fun of Tom Thumb or anybody else in range. Quite typical and uninteresting, especially for the group's archer. But then STUFF happened... with his marriage proposal to Lady Lark turned down, the jealous Archer ("It's the Blue Eagle, isn't it? Admit it- it's HIM!") went nuts and did the one thing everyone was afraid of- using the B-Mod Device to brainwash her into loving him. Finally coming clean about it when provoked ("I just want to say... I'm GUILTY and I'm SORRY..."), he went into hiding to avoid Lark (who was still obsessively infatuated with him), returning as a member of the Redeemers named Black Archer, in order to earn back his own dignity and honour. In the final battle, he nearly did away with his best friend when he put an arrow right into Dr. Spectrum's Power Prism, blowing it up and infusing Doc with its powers. But in his horror over this act, he left himself wide open for Blue Eagle (who was by far the MOST furious with Archer's use of the B-Mod Device, having feelings for Lark himself, ones she was reciprocating, until...), who brained him with his mace using a flying head start. The end of the book states that he dies in surgery after massive trauma to the head. Because in some stories, people who do great wrongs sometimes need to die to redeem themselves.

-Wyatt in either identity is pretty typical of many comic book archers, though he hasn't shown their array of trick arrows- being a guy with only a handful of issues to his name. I just used the ones he was depicted with, and assumed a Snare Arrow was in there somewhere. Feel free to make up more gimmick arrows on the fly. He's a bit less accurate than Hawkeye or Green Arrow, but +13 is still quite good. He's limited elsewhere, being 7.5 defensively. He's basically a Mini-Hawkeye all-around, being much more bargain-basement with his lower accuracy, fewer arrows, and weaker combat talent.

THE MONKEY KING (Real Name Unknown)
Created By:
Nick Spencer & Ariel Ollivetta
You know, it's a shame that the Monkey King doesn't get used more in superhero comics. Yeah, he invites obvious Dragon Ball Z comparisons, but that's like noticing how many similarities John Carter of Mars has with a lot of popular sci-fi: they were both there first.

Based on the mythology, Sun Wukong (however you want to spell it) would be like some kung fu version of Thor. He was immensely strong, fast and skilled, had a magic cloud he could fly on, could shapeshift into virtually any form, change his size, could pluck out his hairs and either fling them like bullets or transform them into weaker clones of himself (who could still shapeshift and use his other abilities), had excellent perception, and knew magic that let him control the weather, bind demons and various other tricks, and wielded an indestructible staff that could alter it's length and size on command.

Plus he had an excellent story of initially being an antagonist (not really evil, but mischievous and without a real sense of the consequences of his actions) before being redeemed. A contemporary monkey king would likely be a very Spider-Man-like character, somewhat mischievous with a sense of humor, but with a sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to do good. But also capable of throwing down with the likes of Thor, which should be pretty awesome.

-Lady Lark is a minor character for most of the series, mainly becoming important because of what's DONE to her rather than what she actually DOES. Her biggest focus comes when she slowly falls for gruff Blue Eagle (though this happens mostly off-panel) and turns down Golden Archer's marriage proposal- it pretty much falls apart for her after that. Archer brainwashes her into being his love-slave, though she overdoes it, smothering him into running away out of guilt over what he'd done. She spends the rest of the series in the background, chasing after Archer (who was booted from the Squadron from his actions), but she never finds him. Just another one of the lives ruined by the Squadron's Utopia Program. But she does get a happier ending in later stories, as she takes on Blue Eagle's identity as well, becoming Skylark and a much more well-rounded heroine.

-Lark's no powerhouse, and it shows. Pretty much just a singer who happened to gain super-powers (more on that in Dr. Decibel's bio), she's got one big trick with her mini-Array of Sonic Screams, and uses it often. Her "Stunning Scream" only really exists because one time she stunned Nuke, who was acting out at the time.Unlike Black Canary, Lark had none of the martial arts or long-term superheroics to make herself useful, so she just tended to be a background fighter. She's got PL 10 Area Dazzles, but is PL 9 with any aimed attacks, and much weaker overall defensively.

-During the latter Squadron stories, Linda re-joins the team, still in mourning for her beloved Archer, but dons the late Blue Eagle's Harness to use in her new identity- that of Skylark. She's a stronger and more capable heroine, doing much better overall.

Re: Dynasty

Jabroniville wrote: Sat Jul 01, 2017 3:00 am Image

THE DYNASTY:
-The Dynasty is a perfect microcosm of something weird I've noticed in modern comics- the idea that a brand-new superteam of guys could be created at once, have almost no personality notes or even major descriptions of their powers, only do stuff in the background, and then get mostly wiped out with casual glee. In olden times, you'd almost NEVER see that happen. In 1975, The Dynasty would have debuted with a lot of fanfare on the cover, given all their names at once, bragged about their powers, showcased them by whupping on the hero, and the finally been beaten back, where they'd go into Marvel Limbo for years, until Mark Gruenwald remembered them.

-Instead, The Dynasty showed up, barely had mention of their powers, were only seen in the background in random "Snapshots" (comics are SO bad for doing that with fight scenes now- it's all just "snapshots" here and there of a fight scene- barely a mention of tactics, style or even guys selling the damage they've just taken), and then disappeared until a few of them were killed later that year, with the remainder forming a NEW superteam in another book.

-This kind of thing means that older characters are SO much easier to stat- even Douchey Loser #852 from Marvel Team-Up who did one thing and then got murdered by the Scourge of the Underworld has a more elaborate bio that the friggin' Star or Revolutionary. What's sad is that "Chinese Superteam" is a totally great idea for a story- a semi-antagonistic nation has superheroes of its own, who oppose the heroes and do their own thing, but are ultimately still heroic defenders. The Soviets had one; why not China? Which really should have THOUSANDS of superhumans- superhumans are formed by two things: People and Industrial Accidents. Who the hell has more of both than CHINA? The world should be swarming with superhuman Chinese.
Yeah, groups like this show how . . . well, lazy modern comics have become regarding introducing new secondary characters. I mean, it's pretty sad when the Force of July and every version of the Super Soviets/People's Protectorate/Winter Guard are vastly more fleshed out than your modern characters. But again, it just kind of shows how a lot of modern writers handle introducing new characters. It's the writing equivalent of the "sketchpad" characters from the 90s. The writer has a concept that he thinks is cool, but rather than fleshing it out, just gives the concept the minimum characteristics to qualify for a character, lets them fulfill their purpose in the story, then forgets about them.

And there really is no reason why every major world power in Marvel or DC wouldn't have its own "Avengers" style team. There was actually a nice moment in that Proteus/X-Men/X-Force/New Warriors crossover where X-Factor was flying in, and Scott was talking with the Avengers, the People's Protectorate, Alpha Flight and Excalibur, saying that they'll be ready to help if the X-Men needed. It was nice to showcase that the world at large had their own heroes to handle their own problems, and that we're just seeing the American perspective because that's what American writers know. The last time this concept was done semi-decently was the Great 10 over in DC, though of the characters introduced, only The August General in Iron gained any popularity.

Speaking of China, while it definitely should have superheroes of its own, I could easily see several reasons why it doesn't dominate the world in superheroes. For one thing, the modern Chinese government has a history of human rights violations and harshly oppressing dissidents. It'd be very easy to paint China as being very anti-mutant in the Marvel Universe, and that when they first appeared, most mutants were killed off and their families were either imprisoned or killed as well, thus limiting the growth of the mutant population in China severely. Likewise, superheroes might be seen as inherently dangerous due to being powerful individuals operating outside of the law, so there has been a harsher crackdown on vigilantes until recently. Furthermore, China apparently has sub-par safety regulations, so it might be fun to poke at the idea that the only reason superhero "accidents" wind up creating superheroes is due to the accident happening in as safely controlled conditions as possible. In essence, China's safety regulations are so bad that the accidents that would otherwise create superheroes winds up killing them instead. And it would only be with the rise of recent superheroes and global menaces that China starts softening its stance on superheroes, though likely trying to put all major ones under government control.

Global superheroics is definitely something I'd take into account when doing my own superhero setting. There'd be a big "Justice League" style team that was international and made up of the best heroes from across the globe, but every major nation would at least have an Avengers style team. I'd also try to match the heroes of the world to the kind of superheroic media they enjoy. Lots of American superheroes in America and Britain, Anime/Tokusatsu heroes in Japan, etc. I'd also do sort of a "Germans Love David Hasselhoff" thing where if an imported superheroic series was popular in some country, then there's elements of that series/genre are the heroes there as well.

-The original, evil Doctor Spectrum was a human who gained a Power Prism from The Grandmaster- it contained a sentient entity called "Krimonn", and was vulnerable to ultraviolet light. After the Squadron's defeat, he reappears in the Iron Man book a few times, eventually getting his Prism crushed by the Avenger. During a later battle against The Thing, The Black Panther, and Brother Voodoo, Obatu accidentally falls to his death. As a native Ugandan, I'm fairly certain he may be the first black supervillain in comic book history.

-Obatu's a bit of a low-end villain, but a weapon this powerful makes ANYONE a threat- he's PL 10, which is pretty high for the Silver Age.

So yeah- I was gonna just post up the Squadron Supreme, but then I read up on the, like, SIX Doctor Spectrums, and figured I'd throw down the rest of them. So only the Squadron Supreme one will be a re-post- the others are all-new (though still all-lazy, as they copy the same powers :)).

Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +4 (+9 Field, +13 Enhanced), Fortitude +5, Will +6

Complications:
Weakness (Fragile Prism)- The Prism is not invulnerable, and can be shattered by an object as minor as an arrow at close range. This is an insane called-shot, but possible nonetheless.
Weakness (Ultraviolet Radiation)- UV Rays can pass through Spectrum's shields.
Guilt (Nuke's Death)- Dr. Spectrum accidentally killed teammate Nuke while trying to restrain him, and went off the active combat roster for months as a result. This death haunts him, and caused him to drop his carefree jokester act. He even refuses to act violently afterwards, fighting only under extreme circumstances.
Relationship (Foxfire)- Spec and Olivia are an item during the latter half of the Utopia Program.
Vulnerable (Mind Control)- The Squadron Supreme have proven themselves very easy to take over mentally for some reason, as it has happened several times. This may be random chance, or an actual weakness.
Responsibility (The Utopia Program)- The Squadron has founded a program designed to cure all the world's ills- Crime, Poverty, Disease, War... even Death itself. Some members are more dedicated than others, but they all strive to help.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 75 / Defenses: 12 (180)

-Spectrum's quite obviously a Green Lantern rip-off, but done in the most interesting way I've yet seen, as he can make objects & blasts of any colour on the "spectrum", and with a costume so classically "comic book" that I'd rank it as the top costume of the series, despite being one of the oldest designs (since the original Marvel Dr. Spectrums were all villains from earlier).

-Dr. Spectrum is one of the most important characters off-and-on of the Squadron series, in that he's an upper-tier powerhouse in combat, but rarely gets into fights. That's mainly because of his guilt at causing Nuke's death when he tried to restrain him in the early issues- it was a neat bit, as he was played up as an irresponsible ladies' man and a pain in the ass (pranking Power Princess by removing her top, even admitting later that he'd paid a cameraman to send him footage!). The fight against Nuke made him realize how irresponsible he'd been, and he has to be comforted by Power Princess herself.

-He plays a major part of several parts of the series: he has a great friendship with the Golden Archer as partners in crime- he defends Archer from the accusations of Blue Eagle and the others over B-Modding Lady Lark, and is horrified to learn the truth. Even so, he defends his friend against Eagle, to whom he continues to show a good deal of anger towards. He later begins a growing appreciation the mind-wiped Institute of Evil members ("I'm even starting to like my old enemy, Quagmire!"), including forming a relationship with Foxfire. He also had a great showing in the last battle. How good? Well, he lived, which is a pretty good sign in a series with the body count of Squadron Supreme. He did end up merged with his Power Prism, though, turning him into a chalk-white person.

-My Dr. Spectrum build takes a lot from things I do with Green Lanterns. He's PL 11, using mostly +11-12 effects for his powers (blasts of varying shapes, Move Object & Snare), but doesn't have the "Willpower" Complication that GLs have. He's got the standard Array that also includes an enhanced Force Field- I mean, you never see a GL with a MASSIVE force bubble up, protecting tons of innocent people, when he's ALSO going full-out with his blasts. He can also use this trick to give other people the benefit of Life Support. This makes him a bit of a headache in battle, but does show exactly what GL-types are capable of. For some reason, he can also Permeate matter, which is something I've never understood, and he only did it twice- both during regular-day junk (flying into or out of a domicile just because it's easier than the door).

-By series' end, his powers are permanently a part of his body. This makes him a PL 11 (194) individual, but with a Complication noting his problems fitting in to daily life, as he's now whatever colour he's using as a weapon- otherwise he's pure white.

That's actually a classic Golden Age Green Lantern trick, and considering who created this character ... ;)

-The Power Prism eventually reforms, being found by a Sanitation worker who brings it to the Evangelist Billy Roberts (a play on Billy Graham and Pat Roberts, both famous and notorious televangelists), who becomes the second Doctor Spectrum and a supervillain for whatever reason (seriously, you think a high-end Evangelist would bother with the kind of money a SUPER-VILLAIN makes?). He pops up in Defenders a couple of times as a background villain, but Yellowjacket swipes his Power Prism and gifts it to his wife- Janet Van Dyne. However, the Prism manages to take control of her mind, turning her into ANOTHER Doctor Spectrum! The Avengers & Roberts manage to pry it off her, but then it attaches itself to Thor- however, now that he's no longer "worthy" (being evil now), Mjolnir drops and he converts into Dr. Donald Blake, which causes the Prism to become inert forever.

-Roberts has the stats of a high-end Megachurch preacher instead of a criminal, which ironically gives him MORE powers over bullshit, as those guys were notorious for making scads of money and using it to fund lavish lifestyles. Many of them suffered major public falling-outs in subsequent years, but the Megachurches have returned in force, and are now more common than ever. Most are not as famous as Graham was in decades past, however- the most mainstream is probably Pat Robertson, notorious for his anti-gay slander and generally acting like what the stereotype is of a bigoted, old-school preacher.

SAILOR VENUS (Minako Aino, aka Sailor V)
I watched only a little of Sailor moon, mostly just enough to see Naru's evil love bite it, and enough to wonder at a series that had story progression. Admittedly not as good as some other cartoons I would learn about later, but I had access to next to no TV growing up, so it was a big deal for me.

And of the original characters I've always at least been on board with their characters except... except for Venus.

My favorite character design, she wound up just being a mirror or non-entity next to the others, being an even more airheaded version of Serena/Usagi.
Which never made sense to me. This was a girl who was doing the Superhero thing by herself for some time before the others ever did, and yet she never shows any skill or experience.

Worse there seems to have been a significant lost opportunity.
Even keeping the characterization the same I can imagine a story that would make her situation somewhat sad.
What if Venus was the Princess' decoy?
They look rather similar, and by having her activate her powers before the princess you could make an argument that people looking for the princess would go for Venus instead. And then after meeting the others adopting Serena/Usagi's personality to continue to confuse any would be assassins...

Yeah, that would be entirely too much thought for a series which ran away from the premise of teenage girls getting boyfriends ;~)

Still, Sailor Moon holds a place in my heart.

-The third Squadron Sinister version of Dr. Spectrum is Alice Nugent, a former lab assistant of Henry Pym. However, she's pretty minor- I can't even find anything about her on Wikipedia. I own that story, and she's pretty forgettable in it. Nicieza plucked her out of total obscurity (Kurt Busiek briefly used her in Ultron Unlimited for expository purposes), and she wants to take over the world for reasons of "only *I* can be trusted to rule it properly!". She disappeared with the other Squadron members.

Re: Jab's Builds! ( The Monkey King! Archer! Lady Lark! Dr. Spectrums!)

Post by Jabroniville »

Another female Dr. Spectrum was in the recent Squadron Supreme series, being the sole survivor of her world (one featuring OTHER Justice League Homages), which was destroyed by The Illuminati- vengeful, she helps the new Squadron kill Namor, but ultimately finds herself dissatisfied with the team and leaves it. She's PL 10 like the other Spectrums, and is more of a generic superhero. Like many new heroes, I'm uncomfortable just guessing for most of her stuff, because she's that weird combination of "been in 17 issues" and "kind of an unknown" that I hate trying to get a handle on.
