-Ape X is kind of a parody/pastiche of DC's tendency to throw apes all over everything. Particularly the whole futuristic "Gorilla City" concept. A female gorilla in a Professor X get-up and a green halter top isn't exactly a serious threat, but her devious genius makes her a dangerous opponent semi-early on in the series. Once the Squadron B-Mods her into a happy citizen, however, she becomes a pussycat- a serene woman who helps Tom Thumb out with his inventions (and in one panel, sort of admits to nursing a crush on him), and becomes a major part of the team in a "behind the scenes" sort of way. Her final fate is sadder than most of the others, as a drawback to the B-Mod system, she goes catatonic after trying to decide whether or not to betray Moonglow (now a Squadron member) to the rest of the Squadron upon discovering her treachery. This puts her out of the firing line of the final battle, another speed-bump in the realization that this Utopia Program isn't all it's cracked up to be.

-Xina also has one of the few subplots that didn't get wrapped-up in the series, as she starts building a robotic simulacrum of Tom Thumb in the latter issues, but she gets disabled before it can ever gain Tom's brainwaves. Honestly, though- I liked the character. In what other comic can you get a neat little story about an evil crippled ape-woman who turns good?

-Ape X isn't much of a combat specialist, being more of a planner, and her stats fit that. Modifying my Gorilla animal build (knew those would come in handy someday) into a legless female ape (thus weaker and smaller), she's pretty strong, but woefully inaccurate, needing her Equipment to move around (she was in a tank-like vehicle at first, but switched to a hovering/flying version upon joining the Squadron- in at least one shot, it's shown high into the air after a gas explosion). She's a better craftswoman and planner than a fighter- her stats reflect a Genius Inventor-type who's below the true elites, but still very good.

probably some fan edit- I got it off comicvine :).

-Decibel isn't really based off of anybody in particular that I can see (though has some links to Doctor Polaris- both were M.D.s before turning to villainy). He gets the shortest shrift of just about everybody in the series as well- showing up as the second-in-command of the Institute of Evil, he's some kind of mad doctor who mutilated Lady Lark's vocal cords, but ends up B-Modded into becoming the Squadron's doctor (he's apparently a full M.D.). He shows up from time-to-time as a medical professional (trying to get Lark to forgive him- and failing), usually to pooh-pooh someone's decision (such as Arcanna's decision to go on hero-ing while very pregnant- he cannot go against her decision because of his B-Modding), and then he dies- choked to death by the  Darkforce goop that is created by a comatose Quagmire. One of the most casual deaths in the series, and practically glossed over by everybody as "aw gee whiz".

-Dr. Decibel is basically just Lady Lark with some different stats, mainly a large amount of focus in Expertise & Medicine. He's a GREAT doctor, but not much of a combatant, coming up way short for a PL 10, much like most of the Institute. He's still a PL 10, though- those Blasts are every bit as nasty as Lady Lark's.

I think Dr. Decibel might be slightly related to the original Dr. Polaris, who was also a medical doctor.

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +10, Fortitude +10, Will +5

Complications:
Motivation (Justice)- Amphibian is one of the more moralistic members of the Squadron, and opposes many of their decisions as going a bit too far.
Responsibility (The Seas)- Though not as big of a tool as Aquaman, Kingsley enjoys his time spent underwater, and dislikes being away from it for very long.
Vulnerable (Mind Control)- The Squadron Supreme have proven themselves very easy to take over mentally for some reason, as it has happened several times. This may be random chance, or an actual weakness.
Responsibility (The Utopia Program)- The Squadron has founded a program designed to cure all the world's ills- Crime, Poverty, Disease, War... even Death itself. Some members are more dedicated than others, but they all strive to help.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 17 / Defenses: 12 (124)

-I actually liked Amphibian in the series, betraying his "Aquaman" basis. He was shown as the most moral guy on the team, and the biggest opposer to the various things the Squadron was doing. He initially rejected their plan to take over the world to improve it (though unlike Nighthawk, he stuck around to voice further issues, and always had misgivings), and rejected the Behavior Modification Devices. This was a neat thing, as he was now the voice of reason- the one guy who could object to various things the Squadron were doing. When Golden Archer admitted to B-Modding Lady Lark into loving him, he finally breaks his silence (he was constantly out-voted on issues)- lashing out at the team for deserving what they got now that they'd created the things. When all the discipline is doled out (Amphibian suggested that none be given), Amphibian storms out of the compound, shattering the B-Mod Device. He is never seen again in the story.

-Returning to the seas gave him one of the happier endings of the series, too (which shows you how messy things got for everybody), as he was finally happy there. His leaving marks a big change-point in the series, as the B-Modded Institute of Evil guys replaced "Phib", Lady Lark and the Golden Archer on the roster. Later on, he is encountered in the Busiek-era Avengers book, and has shapeshifted to match his environment- now looking like a very aquatic creature. Aloof to the surface world by this point, he is nonetheless convinced to rejoin the Squadron and try to save what's become of their world.

-Amphibian is kind of like an Aquaman that can't actually control sea life (at least I think so- he just talked to them over the course of the series). He's strong and a good fighter, but balanced out rather than true 'epic' powerhouses. This actually makes him one of the more versatile guys, since he's strong as hell, but is naturally quite accurate. He builds up points rather quickly thanks to high stats and decent Skills & Advantages. His exact strength levels are tough to determine (he's stated to be the "#3 Strongest" guy on Earth, after Hyperion & Power Princess- this is before Redstone showed up- which leaves a lot of ground to cover), but it's enough to turn a tank's main gun upwards, so I figure +10 Damage (or 25 tons of lift) is good enough- he needed help to tip over a tank, but some of those can weigh 75 tons.

OHOTMU said he could lift 10 tons (Zarda was 20 tons), but by then it said Hype was 75 and Stan ran at 175 mph, both of which were less than what they did in the series.

As I've read nearly every appearance of these guys, it's rather easy to assess their placement on the scale. The things they do seem rather measurable, and they have frequent feats & jobbings. Gru was very, very good for that, which I think is why Marvel is so, SO much easier to stat than DC- despite his weird ideas about strength levels, he was remarkably consistent, and kept most books that way. Claremont could be nutty, but he was also good for that.

*grumbles about statting OMAC and Captain Comet...*

Complications:
Vulnerable (Mind Control)- The Squadron Supreme have proven themselves very easy to take over mentally for some reason, as it has happened several times. This may be random chance, or an actual weakness.
Relationship (Howard Shelton, Hyperion)- Zarda was married (common-law) to Howard for decades, but he aged while she didn't. Broken by his death, she quickly fell into the arms of the Hyperion of another world- this made her realize that she truly loved the original, and they soon grew closer thanks to her prodding.
Responsibility (Utopia Isle)- Zarda hails from Utopia Isle, a place that knew no pain, war, discrimination or violence. When the Atomic Bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, they resolved to leave Earth, with only Zarda staying behind, in order to help humanity crawl out of these depths. This makes Zarda one of the largest supporters of...
Responsibility (The Utopia Program)- The Squadron has founded a program designed to cure all the world's ills- Crime, Poverty, Disease, War... even Death itself. Some members are more dedicated than others, but they all strive to help.

Total: Abilities: 90 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 27 / Powers: 28 / Defenses: 11 (180)

-huh, it actually took until 1982 for the Squadron to get its "Wonder Woman"- weird.
-Power Princess was a major character throughout the entire series- she was the #2 person in the Squadron itself, and her description of the Utopia Isle where she was born (apparently created by the Kree of that world) gave the team the impetus to try to actually forge "The Utopia Program" in America. She was generally the most caring and sensitive member of the team, frequently coddling male characters who were upset (particularly Spectrum after Nuke's death, even though he'd embarrassed her earlier by cutting her top-strap, causing her to flash someone). As Hyperion's #2, she was a powerhouse that helped make their Program possible as well.

-Later on, she was visited by tragedy, when her very own "Steve Trevor", Howard, who'd aged naturally and was thus quite elderly, was secretly murdered by an evil version of Hyperion, who'd replaced the original and wanted Zarda for himself. This brought her into the arms of the killer, who himself was killed fighting the real thing- Zarda was crushed by the revelations, mourning both her late husband, and her husband's killer. She admitted, however, that it was so easy to fall for the Evil Hyperion because she'd developed feelings for the Good one, and confessed this to the hero, who was at this point laid-up thanks to being blinded in the last battle. When he just stuttered a reply, she just said "please shut up" and resolved to take care of him, which I'm pretty sure is SOME kind of nerdy fantasy...

-Misguided Zarda became the new Field Leader for the Squadron Supreme, leading them in their final battle against the Redeemers. She actually accomplished little there, getting the SNOT kicked out of her by Inertia, who kept using Hyperion's punches against her. When the Squadron surrendered and gave up their misguided Utopia Program, she took a back seat to Hyperion once more, showing up in a few Squadron-related things in Gruenwald books, and later, the Kurt Busiek Avengerss. She actually got a mainstream Marvel showing in The Exiles before Claremont took over with his Sage-Love, but I never read any of that run- here, she was discovered when the Exiles 'ported to Earth-712 (the Squadron's Earth), and chose to join them when they were chasing after Proteus. Eventually, she left the team- the first member to voluntarily quit instead of being killed.

-Oh, and she was really, really curvy. In a field where nearly every woman is either built like She-Hulk or like a little wilting flower, it's nice to see someone with actual hips and curves instead of toned muscle mass and a six-pack. Though John Buscema's single issue on the title took it to new extremes, making her look spectacular.

-Power Princess is a well-balanced, powerful PL 11, fit to lead the team (Despite a lack of battlefield command), very strong, doing lots of damage, and being relatively hard to hit thanks to her shield. The shield itself is basically just like Cap's, though she uses it much less often, implying she'd not as good with it. She basically uses it to deflect gunfire, then MAYBE toss it, but tends to just punch the crap out of people instead. She's durable, but not enought to stand against Hyperion's punches, but she's otherwise very, very good, and certainly could take most of the Squadron in a fight. PL 11 is quite nasty in a world where only a handful make PL 10.

Re: Jab's Builds! (Dr. Spectrums! Amphibian! Power Princess!)

Post by Ares »

Just some info to bring a little closure to the Squadron's story:

Once they managed to return to their own Earth, they discovered that it had been taken over by an oppressive government. Said government claimed to have taken over legitimately after the Squadron had been gone (likely for about a year or two in-universe), and that if the Squadron opposed them, they'd be fighting the rightly elected government of the world.

During the story Shape and Skylark were injured, Arcana was sidelined due to the magical fields of her world having shifted due to the Nth Man crisis, and needed to basically re-learn how to master her magics. This left the Squadron shorthanded, but a reformed Nth Man (now functioning as a Phantom Stranger pastiche) informed the Squadron they needed to reform their original team, which included Skymax (a Martian Manhunter analogy who was actually a Super-Skrull), Amphibian and a new Nighthawk. Amphibian's new look was actually all about adapting to his environment. When he submerges very deep into the ocean, his body shifts to a form more adept to deep sea living. When he returned to the surface, he resumed his more human dimensions.

The re-formed Squadron decided to oppose the new government, but do it carefully since they had apparently been voted into power legally. During the Exiles run, it was revealed that the new government had actually used B-Mod technology to subtly manipulate people into electing them. This justified the original Nighthawk and Amphibian's concerns over the technology, but with the revelation that the new government was not legit, the Squadron and the Exiles took it apart, especially when they revealed to the world how'd they'd used.

So the Squadron liberated their world, and Power Princess decided to join the Exiles to pay them back for their help, but eventually returned.

And then Hickman decided he didn't want a Hyperion with all of that backstory, and created a new one from scratch, wearing an atomic diaper.

Dodge +10 (+13 Shield, DC 20-23), Parry +10 (+12 Shield, DC 20-22), Toughness +4 (+5 Suit), Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Vulnerable (Mind Control)- The Squadron Supreme have proven themselves very easy to take over mentally for some reason, as it has happened several times. This may be random chance, or an actual weakness.
Responsibility (Father's Legacy)- John Dore Sr. was the first American Eagle during World War II, and John Jr. sought to live up to his legacy at first. After a political falling-out, John Jr. split from his dad and became "Cap'n Hawk". When his father died as a result of the Squadron's brainwashed activities, John Jr. brought the legacy back as the Blue Eagle.
Relationship (Lady Lark)- John & Linda were starting to fall for each other partway through The Utopia Program, but were split up by Golden Archer's treachery.
Reputation (Cynic)- Blue Eagle is even more devoted to justice and "right" over his comrades, and this often makes him seem cruel and overly-suspicious to the point of self-righteousness. He suspects nearly everybody of wrongdoing, and nearly always asks for the most extreme response possible (such as B-Modding the new recruits). He comes across as a jerk, but he's actually correct more often than not.
Responsibility (The Utopia Program)- The Squadron has founded a program designed to cure all the world's ills- Crime, Poverty, Disease, War... even Death itself. Some members are more dedicated than others, but they all strive to help.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 11 (110)

-Mark Gruenwald really did a spectacular job making each Squadron member unique and interesting. Not only were all of the Institute of Evil members possessing their own personalities BEFORE B-Modding, they got new ones after, and someone who could easily have been a generic boring guy, like the "Hawkman" of the team- Blue Eagle, ended up one of the most interesting guys in the whole series. Rather than just go with the flow, he was shown as the most angry and moralistic member of the group, to the point of coming off like a self-righteous zealot. He demanded resignations (after noticing Lady Lark's sudden renewed interest in Golden Archer), recommended B-Modding of everyone even a little suspicious (suggesting they brainwash the Squadron's new members like the Institute, even though they'd done nothing wrong from his perspective- he was just paranoid. It was just too bad that he was right), he made threats towards those he believed were doing wrong. And rather than be some jerk-ass Strawman, a lot of the time he was right, or at least COULD BE right, which is what made the series so interesting- you were constantly left only half-agreeing with some guys. After all, he suggested B-Modding the team's new recruits, and while that was VERY extremist and unbelievably jerk-ish, it would have saved tons of lives- proving his instincts were correct.

-Eagle was smart and cool enough to have Lady Lark fall for him, but his lesser tendencies (he was angry because Quagmire's post-B-Modding left him still kind of a flirty smarmadon) resulted in Quagmire's death/disappearance- Eagle slugged Quagmire and left, but while he was gone, Quagmire was left rescuing over thirty workers from a gas leak by himself, and it crippled him. He wore the costume of Blue Eagle after giving up his Cap'n Hawk identity, one he created after a falling-out with his late father, a Golden Age hero named American Eagle. Like I said, a really well-rounded character- Gru was great at giving many characters little bits here and there (we only here of Eagle's father the one time, in one panel of exposition, but it helps round him out and "inform" him.

-Blue Eagle's final fate in the battle was a broken neck, resulting from a fall caused by Lamprey draining his wings of their power. He was able to sail to the ground, but his attempted landing on Pinball ended up killing them both nonetheless. It was one of the odder deaths of the final battle (I mean, what heroes actually die from FALLS anymore?), though heroes probably SHOULD suffer worse from some of the landings they take. Lady Lark ended up honoring him by co-opting his powers onto hers later on, though she never found out that during that final battle, Blue Eagle smashed Black Archer's head in, a final revenge for B-Modding Lady Lark in the first place.

-Unfortunately for him, Blue Eagle comes up very cheap. That's kinda what happens when you're really just a melee fighter who can fly, without being a supreme martial artist, and you don't have just ass-loads of extra-powers and the Poochie-ness of being your writer's favourite character (coughHawkmancough). So Eagle's good in combat, fitting PL 9 with his Mace and Shield, doing a ton of damage if he Power Attacks (as Black Archer figured out, to his eternal regret).

Oh yeah- that was brought up last time I posted him too, I think. Decibel & Ape X definitely have a "DC Feel" to them, while the others resemble 1980s Marvel characters. Even Lamprey, who was the most obvious pastiche on the bad guys (being Parasite).
