First Appearance: The Spectacular Spider-Man #32 (July 1979)
Role: Odd Side-Character

-Marcy Kane was a college girlfriend of Peter Parker's for a short time, but largely disappeared. It turned out (five years after her debut) that she was an alien- a Contraxian- and the mother of the hero Jack of Hearts! She was searching for a method to save her system's star, and finally found it when Jack used his powers to save the day. This kind of gets glossed over in Peter's history.
This cracks me up. Marcy Kane apparently was such a non-character she gets a brief write up but doesn't warrant statting up.

I also think it's funny how she took advantage of her time on Earth to have herself a little "May-December" romance with Peter. Seriously, her son is Peter's age, so she's gone full-on mid-life crisis here.
I do that with a lot of "non-notable" characters who at least deserve SOME mention. I mean, there's nothing about this character that seems to require stats beyond "Bystander", but she was still brought up by Krash Jr. :).

Screwball

SCREWBALL (Real Name Unknown)

Advantages:
Equipment 1 (Cameras), Evasion, Improved Defenses, Improved Initiative, Move-By Action

Powers:
"Parkour Specialist" Movement 1 (Environmental Adaptation- Urban Landscapes) [2]

Offense:
Unarmed +10 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Initiative +10

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +3, Fort +4, Will +4

Complications:
Motivation (Hits For Her Website)- Screwball stages various situations in order to score more hits for her website.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 10 (102)

-Screwball is a modern, "relevant" villainess- she commits crimes to get hits on her website! However, she immediately gives up when he plants a Spider-Tracer on her, as they were then linked to a series of murderers and she feared for her life. She next got involved in a betting fix, disguising herself as Spider-Man in order to pull one over on betting villains at the Bar With No Name. Later, she tricks Spidey into helping her save a kid, just for more hits, and continues on as one of those annoying Background Villains that shows up semi-frequently as a pest, and usually escapes thanks to a mastery of distractions. However, she and The Jester soon draw the ire of The Superior Spider-Man- thinking that it's the same old Spidey, they humiliate and harass him, only to discover that this isn't the same old guy- Doc Ock in Spidey's body beats the ever-loving CRAP out of them, sending them both to the hospital. She is later seen harrassing Araña in HER book, but she hasn't been seen since.

-An expert planner and good with social media, Screwball is no physical threat (a mere PL 6 offensively), but she's as good as anyone at getting out of the way and avoiding capture- Acrobatics, Athletics AND Parkour (one of my favorite things is to stick Powers on "regular people"). She's out of her league in a fight against anyone, but her ability to cause chaos and use her minions effectively means she's rarely caught.

Freedom's Five

Post by Jabroniville »

FREEDOM'S FIVE:
-Freedom's Five debuted in the late 1960s, and were meant to be a group of super-heroes from World War I. Now, I find myself questioning the whole "retcon in more-ancient heroes" thing, as... part of my kind of prefers that the ORIGINAL heroes of a company were the ORIGINAL HEROES, you know? Now, I know that guys like Thor & Hercules were technically around on Earth for centuries, and that in real life, the earliest superheroes can be relatively ancient (if you go back far enough, guys like Zorro and the Scarlet Pimpernel date back to the early 1900s, and were set in times prior), so this might not really make sense... but I'm just not a big fan of costumed Mystery Men active prior to the 1930s at Marvel.

-In any case, the original member of the team was Union Jack, another Thomas creation. He was meant to be a WWI hero, and the previously-created Phantom Eagle was placed on his team, alongside three other new characters: The Crimson Cavalier, Sir Steel, and the Silver Squire.

Phantom Eagle

The Phantom Eagle was primarily Gary Friedrich's idea. He knew I was interested in airplanes and that kind of stuff, so he came up with this wacko idea that became the Phantom Eagle. However, I could not quite justify this Americanized version of some sort of WWI combat ace. ... There was too much of a superhero in the character. If you know anything of that time in history or the feel of that time, you would know that it was just so wrong. But it was fun and I got to make up some of the airplanes. ... The Phantom Eagle airplanes were all made up, and not patterned after a real airplane, but an original design by me. ... It had a kind of corny design pattern painted on it, like wings and that kind of stuff, which was not that far from what the pilots painted on their planes. But that character was what Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were to the American Western – totally Hollywoodized.

-The Phantom Eagle was Herb Trimpe's first published work at Marvel, but was Gary Friedrich's idea. He didn't appear very often, given that no other heroes were really contemporary with him, but Roy Thomas created a band of heroes around him for The Invaders. He was an American who desired to fight the Central Powers during The Great War, and disguised himself so that his parents wouldn't be targeted. He shot down an experimental German dirigible during an invasion of New York (the historical accuracy truly boggles my mind). Subsequently, he is seen against the Hulk, who was sent through time by Kang to ensure a German victory in the War (by preventing the Eagle from destroying a super-weapon), then as part of Freedom's Five, alongside English & French heroes.

-He has been revealed to have been killed during the end of the War by a German flying ace, who shot both the Eagle and his parents- Kaufman's spirit thus haunted the man for years, before fighting him in aerial combat in Ghost Rider's book in the '70s. With the German dying, the Phantom Eagle's spirit thus moves on. Garth Ennis (himself a military nut) wrote a five-issue Limited Series in the 2000s, but I've never heard of it.

-The Phantom Eagle is a pretty typical "War Hero" kind of guy, packing decent physical skills alongside piloting talent.

Can Paper Doll stretch? Does she have plasticity/elasticity powers? She sort if sounds like The Thin Man, but he can stretch and has some elasticity.

So people's bodily fluids enable Paper Doll to become 3D again?? Hmmm. That sounds kinky! Lol.

From what I've heard, in typical Ennis mean-spirited fashion, he took a hero and made him into a horrible person, while the people around him where the real heroes. Because people still don't realize you shouldn't let Garth anywhere near established superheroes.

I'm thinking of a character....

He was created by Marvel Comics in the 1960s.

He shares a name with one of the heroes published by Fawcett Comics in the 1940s.

And it's not Captain Marvel.

It is the Phantom Eagle.

They totally absconded with Mickey Malone's codename.

Actually, one pic seems to show her stretching, though she's so thin it's hard to tell.

-Sir Steel was a manor blacksmith who joined in the war effort, possessing an enchanted blade. He died during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1919, as Union Jack notes. He's appeared in all of one comic, so I don't have much to go on here, but his blade may have been passed down to Templar, a member of the First Line in Marvel: The Lost Generation. I figure him for a PL 7- most Golden Age heroes are PL 7-8, so he'll be around that level.

-The Silver Squire was the son of a nobleman, and took up the role as "Squire" to the blacksmith Sir Steel. One retroactive story has him being injured and replaced by Orson Randall, the Iron Fist of the early 20th Century. Some time between World War I and II, he died, as Union Jack says he's the last surviving member of Freedom's Five. His original name was Gordon Fitzwilliam Dare, but a later bio-book gave a different name. I doubt this is SERIOUS BUSINESS to Marvel or anything, and that one guy simply forgot that his real name was given in The Invaders.

-Dear God I hope this guy is actually related to Batroc The Leaper. I mean, come on, they share a surname AND the art of savate. Like Silver Squire, however, his surname is altered between books- the other one makes him a possible ancestor to Swordsman. This guy's origin is fantastic, too- he's a career criminal who hates the Central Powers SO MUCH that he gives up a life of crime to become a superhero, fighting on the side of the Allies. Though at PL 7 (90), he's not exactly a Skillmonkey, either.

Marvel- The Letter "N":
-"N" isn't a terribly interesting letter with a fascinating story; in fact, it's pretty much "the letter that comes after M", as it has a similar look and sound. However, it is the sixth-most-common letter in the alphabet, and the SECOND-most-used consonant, owing to its use in words that end with "-ing" and things like that.

-"N" is pretty slim-pickings for comic book characters, but there's some pretty good "B-Tier" names in there. You've got Namor and his relatives (Namora & Namorita), Nate Grey, Nebula (now decently well-known because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies), Nova (THREE of them!), Northstar, Nightcrawler and of course Nick Fury- probably the most famous "N" guy thanks to the cinematic universe.
