IRON CROSS (Helmut Gruler)
Created By:

First Appearance: The Invaders #35 (Dec. 1978)
Role: Retconned Golden Age Villain
Group Affiliations: The V-Battalion, Nazi Germany
PL 8 (97)
STRENGTH
3/8 STAMINA 4 AGILITY 2
FIGHTING 7 DEXTERITY 4
INTELLIGENCE 2 AWARENESS 3 PRESENCE 3

Skills:
Deception 1 (+4)
Expertise (Soldier) 4 (+6)
Intimidation 2 (+5)
Perception 2 (+5)
Technology 1 (+3)

Advantages:
Close Attack, Ranged Attack 4

Powers:
"Iron Cross Powersuit" (Flaws: Removable) [24]
Enhanced Strength 5 (5)
Protection 5 (Extras: Impervious 7) (12)
Flight 6 (120 mph) (12)
-- (29 points)

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+3 Damage, DC 18)
Armored Strength +8 (+8 Damage, DC 23)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +7 (DC 17), Toughness +4 (+9 Armor, +4 Impervious), Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Responsibility (Nazi Germany)- Gruler loves the fatherland, and even kidnaps his friend (an ardent Anti-Nazi) in order to improve the Iron Cross armor and help out.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 7 (97)

-Helmut Gruler was a German patriot whose best friend created a suit of armor in the hopes of fighting Hitler- Gruler instead used it on behalf of the fatherland (though he himself was no Nazi). Using the armor, he beat Miss America and the Liberty Legion, but the Invaders came to the rescue- the Human Torch burning many of the controls inside the Iron Cross armor- Gruler was presumed dead after crashing into the ocean.

-In modern times, Gruler was revealed to have survived and had joined the V-Battalion, an altruistic clandestine organization. He claims to want to atone for his past crimes, and revealed that he was over 100 years old (well, duh) and relied on the armor to sustain his life. In the end, Gruler sacrificed his life using the last of his armor's power to stop some KillSats of Baron Strucker. There have been at least three others who wore the suit, but all were pretty minor backgrounders.

-Gruler wears a primitive, but effective, Powersuit, which allows him to brawl with the Liberty Legion and win, then challenge the Invaders for a period of time. I figure PL 8 will be enough. In modern times, he maintains the same overall levels, but is much weaker without the suit (in fact, requiring it to live).

So yeah, if I don't post Iron Cross & Redshirt NOW, I'll literally never remember to do it, so I'll throw them into the middle of the "N" guys. I know this will horrify and disappoint those chomping at the bit to see Nosferata and "That Nocturne Who Isn't Nightcrawler's Daughter", but it has to be done :).

Advantages:
Equipment 1 (Cameras), Evasion, Improved Defenses, Improved Initiative, Move-By Action

Powers:
"Parkour Specialist" Movement 1 (Environmental Adaptation- Urban Landscapes) [2]

Offense:
Unarmed +10 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Initiative +10

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +3, Fort +4, Will +4

Complications:
Motivation (Hits For Her Website)- Screwball stages various situations in order to score more hits for her website.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 10 (102)

-Screwball is a modern, "relevant" villainess- she commits crimes to get hits on her website! However, she immediately gives up when he plants a Spider-Tracer on her, as they were then linked to a series of murderers and she feared for her life. She next got involved in a betting fix, disguising herself as Spider-Man in order to pull one over on betting villains at the Bar With No Name. Later, she tricks Spidey into helping her save a kid, just for more hits, and continues on as one of those annoying Background Villains that shows up semi-frequently as a pest, and usually escapes thanks to a mastery of distractions. However, she and The Jester soon draw the ire of The Superior Spider-Man- thinking that it's the same old Spidey, they humiliate and harass him, only to discover that this isn't the same old guy- Doc Ock in Spidey's body beats the ever-loving CRAP out of them, sending them both to the hospital. She is later seen harrassing Araña in HER book, but she hasn't been seen since.

-An expert planner and good with social media, Screwball is no physical threat (a mere PL 6 offensively), but she's as good as anyone at getting out of the way and avoiding capture- Acrobatics, Athletics AND Parkour (one of my favorite things is to stick Powers on "regular people"). She's out of her league in a fight against anyone, but her ability to cause chaos and use her minions effectively means she's rarely caught.
I like this character. She was pretty fun in the one comic of Spider-Man I read. Grant you she definitely had that new villain stink. Spidey actually thought she might be a mutant because of how nimble she was. I like to stick powers on 'regular people' too.
I don't know if you've picked up the recent Elektra title but Screwball is in it working with Arcade, she's using high-tech weaponry and is pretty much a 'online celebrity' assassin in Arcades's new Las Vegas based Murderworld.

Ares wrote: Fri Jul 21, 2017 3:56 am Night Nurse is an excellent example of worldbuilding, tho. I mean, if you think about it, every superhero without either the resources for their own medical treatment (Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark) or some kind of healing ability would eventually need medical treatment for injuries most doctors would have to report to the police. And it also makes sense that some medical practitioners would admire superheroes for the lives they save. So having one or more of them being a part of a ring of doctors who take care of superheroes off the books makes a lot of sense. Some settings like Empowered even go so far as to have specific hospitals set up for superpowered beings, simply because their health requirements are so unique.

I actually had a similar idea for this home-brew setting I came up with that combined the Watchmen setting with some video game franchises like inFAMOUS, [Prototype], Crackdown and a few others. The basic idea was that in the modern era, Dan/Nite-Owl II had retired as a hero, but he had set himself up as someone who outfitted superheroes, helped them develop costumes, gadgets and the like, assuming they either got recommendations from other heroes or met his standards as a hero. Basically a heroic version of Marvel's Tinkerer.
Cecelia Reyes would be perfect in that role, her force field would even protect her from any negative effects of her patients powers.

John Romita Jr.'s "Hot Chicks" have always left something to be desired.

NUMBER NINE (Real Name Unknown)
Created By:
Ann Nocenti & John Romita, Jr.
First Appearance: Daredevil #271 (1989)
Role: Forgotten Character
Group Affiliations: None
PL 6 (53)

Advantages:
Attractive 2

Powers:
"Physically-Perfect"
Leaping 1 (15 feet) [1]
Regeneration 6 [6]

Offense:
Unarmed +3 (+5 Damage, DC 20)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +3 (DC 13), Parry +3 (DC 13), Toughness +8, Fortitude +8, Will +1

Complications:
Responsibility (Pliant)- Number Nine believes that a woman's position is to do whatever a man says- she is a servile, plaint "decoration".

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 2--1 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 7 / Defenses: 1 (53)

-Number Nine is a Daredevil character who answered an ad offering to transform her into a "perfect being". She was remade using technology from the Inhumans, turning her into a Peak Human-type being with false memories- all the better to turn her into the "ideal woman" of a weirdonamed Skip Ash, who had Gaston-like sensibilities of what women were supposed to be about. Number Nine became pliant and over-nurturing, even when "rescued" by Daredevil. Brandy, Ash's daughter managed to convince him of the error of his ways, and so he left Nine with the heroes. She reappeared in Acts of Vengeance, making friends with a confused Ultron (who was infatuated with her physical perfection; she viewed him sympathetically as a friend), but he was defeated by DD, Karnak and Gorgon, who were on the trail of the Inhuman-related stuff that made her.

-Then, in a weird twist of events, these disparate characters all wound up fighting Blackheart and Mephisto, which drew in the Silver Surfer, and then Brandy was killed and turned into a quasi-angel. Number Nine, now more independent and self-assured, left to find her way in the world, and never showed up again. Very, VERY odd.

-Number Nine is strong and can survive "virtually any injury", but has limited capabilities and skills.
She has the same abilities and a similar background to Avery Connor.

Yes, I like Night Nurse Linda Carter and the idea of behind-the-scenes medical treatment for the supes. They certainly need it, especially after some of their battles!

Iron Cross always reminds me of Blue Bullet, another armored, Nazi and blue villain.

-Redshirt, a Joke Villain from Fred Van Lente's Taskmaster Limited Series, is named for the popular term for those red-shirted guys who always got assigned to "Away Team" missions in the original Star Trek, where they quickly met their doom at the hands of the Threat of the Week- showcasing the deadliness of their mission. The show over-used this trope so many times that it became a pop culture gag, gaining references in everything Trek-related (such as the phenomenal, underrated Galaxy Quest).

-Redshirt claims to be a surviving member of every major terrorist organization in Marvel (a HUGE number of groups), and gathered a bunch of minions together to form the Minions' International Liberation Front, providing the obvious gag with their acronym (personally, I prefer the accidentally-silly names, like Mutant Liberation Front). Redshirt attempts to murder Taskmaster for some reason, and does pretty well using some alien hardware, but when he taunts Tasky by threatening his ex-wife, the Taskmaster copies some of Redshirt's moves, and kills him. But tragically, this plays into a recent thing for Taskmaster- there is a limited amount of space in his brain for memories, and thus, when he copies movesets, he loses old memories- his ex-wife, Mercedes Merced, disappears from his mind forever.

-Redshirt has his body modified in order to copy Shi'ar physiology, and uses one of their unique fighting styles, making him hard for Earthmen to counter. Only Taskmaster's unique Move-Copying power saves him.

-The N'Garai first made their appearance in a very early issue of Claremont's X-Men, in which an ancient, regenerating cairn on the X-Mansion grounds had been opened by Cyclops in a fit of rage after Thunderbird's death- some Demons came forth, their leader Kierrok fought the X-Men, and Storm was able to re-seal their portal prison. Much later, in a pretty famous X-Men issue, a young, immature trainee Kitty Pryde was left alone at the X-Mansion, and a mysterious demon invaded it. The issue basically took the form of a "one-off" featuring a terrified Kitty (who wasn't immune to the creature's touch, despite her Phasing powers) fleeing the hostile monster, using whatever means she had available to her in order to stop it. In desperation, she set off the engines of the X-Men's Blackbird, frying the beast. The resulting damage to the Mansion became a bit of a gag later on.

-Though this is the only time I've ever seen the creatures, they've appeared multiple times since then- like, a lot. It turns out they were the creations of Chthon the Elder God, and used to live on Earth- they long to make a permanent return. They showed up to fight Maggott & Cecilia Reyes when they were new X-Men recruits, fought Satana because her father Lucifer had led Heaven's army against them millennia ago, etc.

-Despite their ferocity, the N'Garai are essentially still a Race of Mooks, able to be slaughtered en masse by someone like Wolverine, so they're still only PL 6. That's notably more dangerous than MANY races, though, so in great numbers, they're still quite scary.

i wonder if Pumpkinhead is one of their race....well we'll see soon enough

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 158 / Defenses: 9 (210)

-The New Sun is a one-off character created for the Gambit series- he's an Alternate Universe version of Remy LeBeau- one whose powers went unchecked and out of control. His powers were enhanced in a special ritual, but the kinetic energy burned up everyone else on the face of the Earth- as the New Sun, he traveled to other worlds in order to prevent the same thing happening, always finding burned-out husks (why was THIS particular incident so common in parralel Earths?). He came to Earth-616 and tried to kill the main Gambit, but was himself killed when Gambit supercharged him- the guy burned out. It is stated that Mister Sinister is responsible for our Gambit not having these same insane power levels- he removed a part of Remy's brain that would allow it. Stuff like these kinds of "Accidentally Destroy the Earth" power-levels are one of those weird things that give DAMN GOOD REASON why normal humans are terrified of Mutants, really.

-The New Sun is so super-charged compared to regular Gambit that he's basically an entirely different person (he also never joined the Thieves Guild). This comes off as a bit of Power-Geeking from Fabian Nicieza, essentially writing in all of the cool stuff he'd probably LIKE to do with Gambit, but won't because he has the good sense to not give a superhero extreme powers such as this. This story may have served to de-power some of Gambit's crazier feats, judging by some of what I've read. This guy can create huge Blasts, stop the movement of objects, and travel to various dimensions.

We see the world not as it is, but as we are. He went looking for a certain kind of trouble, so of course he found it.

-The Night Phantom is a writer who was paralyzed during a plane crash, and ended up in Jamaica. Despising technology and industry, he nonetheless found a radioactive pool and cured his condition- becoming super-powered in the process. His skin, however, was destroyed- he started wearing a dumb-looking outfit consisting of bandages to cover this up. Pretending to be a supernatural creature, he attacked power plants as the "Night Phantom", but Iron Man arrived, investigating the damage to Stark-owned facilities. A one-off villain, he was swept away by a torrent of water while fighting the Armored Avenger, and disappeared. Decades later, he reappeared during the Pleasant Hill story arc, imprisoned. He was only a backgrounder, however.

-A super-strong amateur, all N.P. was was a powerhouse during the Silver Age. New Villain Stink makes him low PL, even with that Class 25 strength level. The villain Mr. Kline made a robot version at one point, but it was quickly destroyed.

Man, I love Redshirt and the MILF. They should be featured in every book at some point. I think Taskmaster whacked him, but that's never stopped a good villain from popping up again. He would be great in a Deadpool or Spidey book. 8-)
