that type of player is annoying in EVERY RPG- the problem with Malkavians (who have as many "no, no- Malkavians are AWESOME!" defense-posts as Kender do in D&D, to the point where you'd think their online rep is that they're AWESOME) is that it's a race/clan/class that more or less BEGS "That Guy" to play them. The guy who wants... nay, DEMANDS... to be the center of attention, and to have everyone indulge his antics. The problem is, someone's "wacky antics" are basically everyone else's Jar-Jar Binks.

Also, going to Edmonton's "K-Days" fair revealed more of those free-to-play ("but please donate!") arcade machines with tons of emulations- featuring many Fighters. I had some fun playing one of the KoF games, learning once again that the Artificial Learning Curve strikes SHARPLY at the third battle, and god help you if one of those guys is Choi Bounge (the unbalanced character who is so small that his Hit Box is ridiculously hard to strike).

I played a King/Vanessa/K' team (since K' is both the "Ryu" and a character I'd never played; the other two were because they were wicked-hot), and did pretty well, King ANNIHILATED two of my opponents, but was mysteriously trounced by Ryo Sakazaki with ease. Then Vanessa did much better- with her, you kind of have to dive it and work on her quick punch-combos, because she can't fight at range. As I'd never played with her before, that was a bit tricky to figure out.

Next up is some re-posting of Marvel's Demons, Greater and Lesser. A few will have many more notes (Mephisto, in particular), but most will be spammed out. I wanted to give most of them separate builds (though they all mostly use the same Template), as it prevents overly-long posts.

-Vaguely less-powerful than the Elder God/Hell-Lord Template, but with lots of weird stuff. Usually around PL 15-16, these guys pop up in quite a few stories, and are usually pretty similar to each other. Writers who don't use the "Big Name" Demons generally end up inventing their own, and so these guys rarely appear, and are typically fought back using pretty generic, low-grade methods.

Yeah, the Blade movies worked a lot better for different reasons, partially due to the vampire craze of the era (Buffy, Angel and Vampire: TM were all pretty big at the time) and vampires being a lot more threatening when there's no superheroes around. Then again, in those movies vampires got nerfed pretty hard as well, given that their powers basically consisted of "never gets old", "really fast, kind of strong", and "will eventually heal from non-weakness related deaths". Blade was more geared towards the Buffy / Underworld level of vampires than anything.

It again goes back to my thinking that in comics, vampires work better as more the Castlevania type, where Dracula basically became a demon and his entire castle is some Lovecraftian Horror he's beaten into submission to act as his home, and every actual vampire is a boss monster. Having "clans" of vampires and "mook" vampires just waters them down, ironically enough. Then again, Castlevania Dracula and Strahd from Ravenloft are two big sources for vampires to me. But vampire mythology is so convoluted you can basically do anything with it.

It actually makes me wonder if werewolves wouldn't work better as the more wide-spread monster type. The idea of clans fits them a little better due to the pack structure of actual wolves, and their more limited abilities (strong, fast, regen and super senses) make them a better "mook" type as well. And unlike vampires, werewolves have a fairly consistent mythology and weaknesses.
I admit it does give me an idea for a campaign with Dracula included to have over a dozen children, each with unique powers and all at around PL 10-11 with him at PL 12-13.

And note that I would base those children off him directly off the 13 Clans from VtM.
Would one of them be "That clan that everyone plays like they're annoying" :)?
Yep, they call 'em the Fisherman. ;)

And it's a total Obfuscating Stupidty-type deal.

greycrusader wrote: Sun Jul 30, 2017 3:04 am Massive power-up in the Modern Era for Vlad Tepes...and though I'm a bit of a "traditionalist", I rather like it; the problem with the Classic Monsters in the MU is how limited they are compared to four-color superhumans and alien invaders. Traditional Dracula was great facing off against Quincy Harker, Blader, and Co., along with perhaps the occasionally street level vigilante, but against Iron Man? the Hulk? Thor? Curb-stomp against Drac. Hell, the Thor thing happened, and the Odinson essentially treated the Vampire Lord like so much easily discarded trash. Dr. Strange went up against him and basically destroyed all vampire kind until editorial...uh, I mean an powerful occult ritual brought them back into existence. Dr. Doom, Magneto, Thanos, and even Apocalypse all would pawn the Count.

But the new version-immortal, undead, warrior king with fighting prowess enough to match Captain America, coupled with Namor-level strength and reflexes, along with mystic knowledge? Yeah, that works in a world full of Avengers battalions and X-Men legions. I even think his arc in Avengers Assemble was pretty impressive, though it assumes a world where Stoker never wrote the novel.

Oh, and Jab-yes, Busiek and Nicieza's runs on Thunderbolts were terrific, some of the best comics in the era. The characterization, "slow burn" story lines, crowning moments of awesome for each main character...I could go on and on. Hell, even minor leaguers like the Great Lakes Avengers and the Elements of Doom were used to great effect, with the writers making the most out of concepts others treated as disposable jokes. The shame of it is how Marvel just basically allowed it all to wash away-the Thunderbolts should be BIG, instead of being this little cult classic of the 1990s. Pity that.

All my best.
I was a teenager during the early Thunderbolts run and have very fond memories of the book, as you've said even the guest star were treated well (I loved that Hercules tore through the team despite being mostly depowered and that Hawkeye stated US Agent could probably take them down if he tried) And yes Mark Bagley awesome art really helped cement the book as one of my favourites at the time.

He was destroyed by Mephisto for attempting to use Zarathos' power against the boss, but appeared in the background of Fear Itself, probably because the writer/artist forgot/didn't care that he was dead.

Later, Hellstrom finds Baphomet in Hell, and the two ally against his enemy, the Possessor. This was his last meaningful role in continuity. He is allegedly behind all of the various Illuminati elements in modern music videos, at least according to insane YouTube commenters.

-First called the Night-Crawler (guess why they changed his name?), this guy was from "The Dark Dimension" (not Dormammu's), and later takes over The Undying Ones' dimension after defeating The Nameless One. This is a whole lotta silly names and stuff intruding upon other established stuff, so I can see why they don't touch on this character anymore.

-N'Astirh is one of the brains behind Inferno, the late '80s X-Event that brought all the various characters together. He was a former servant of Belasco who went off on his own and gained power- it was HE who gave Jason Macendale his powers as the demonic Hobgoblin, and teams up with Cameron Hodge, giving him immortality. He then teams up with Magik's old ally S'ym, and forges a demonic invasion of Earth. When this fails, he later becomse infected with the Transmode Virus, and nearly has the now-insane Madelyne Pryor sacrifice her son Nathan. He is ultimately destroyed when Storm creates a massive bolt of lightning. He later reappears, but acts more savage and animalistic for some reason- I'm thinking the writer just didn't realize how he used to be.

-A close analogue to the Lovecraftian entity "Ithaqua"- he faced Daimon Hellstrom, but only in a few assorted issues. He made a pact with a faculty member disgusted with modernization, promising to halt it on Earth. The Communications Building was where it started, and various mishaps occurred- Hellstrom was hired to investigate and exorcize the place. Hellstrom trapped everyone in the building with a mystical ankh painted on the exit, but a foolish janitor erased it, thinking it graffiti- Ikthalon invaded the outside, and took a hostage so Hellstrom would promise not to hurt him. But Hellstrom immediately blew him up anyways, saying that it was his right to lie, "as the son of the great deceiver". This is his only appearance, but he has been invoked at other times.

-Ikthalon is largely unknown, but rules the dimension of Boreas.

-A generic tentacled-creature that faced The Defenders, allying with The Overmind. He was spawned by the alien S'raphh, whose desires for revenge on the cosmos manifested in the demon. A nihilist and destroyer, he possessed a few people, enabled Overmind to take over the Squadron Supreme's Earth, and the good parts of the S'raphh race was awakened, which caused Null to cease to exist. He was vaguely-powerful, but vulnerable to mystical powers like those of Ghost Rider & Gargoyle.
