-Ngh, and his good counterpart Aah (CHRIST!), were originally one: a composite being that split itself up as a "Great Experiment". Ngh was trapped in the Dimension of Exile by the Tetrarchs of Entropy until he tricked the Avengers into helping him escape. Using powers that allowed him to grow in might the more evil feelings were thrown his way- he beat up the Tetrarchs and the Avengers for a while, until he was convinced to re-merge with Aah.

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +18 (+8 Impervious), Fortitude +18, Will +16

Complications:
Motivation (Gathering Souls & Power)- Mephisto judges success by the amount of souls he possesses- he desires the souls of sentient beings. The more virtuous and noble the being, the better.
Honor- Mephisto will uphold bargains and deals, but be wary of how he words them- he's a tricky one. He also let The New Mutants go when they accidentally made their way into his realm- there's no challenge there ('course, he finagled a date with Magma out of the deal).
Relationship (Amara Juliana Aquila)- Mephisto is rather taken with the hottest of The New Mutants, and actually acts like a bit of a normal person around her (if a bit of a hipster douchebag).
Enemy (The Silver Surfer)- Among the noblest and most incorruptible of souls, Norrin Radd constantly irks Mephisto, and exists as one of the few beings he can never take. This drives the dark one NUTS.
Enemy/Rival (Thog, Satan, Satannish, Zarathos)- Mephisto competes with other Demon Lords for mortal souls- he manipulated Zarathos into Johnny Blaze's control to get him out of the way.
Enemy (Blackheart)- Mephisto's son is a real chip off the old block, and wants daddy's power for himself.
Weakness (Purity)- Mephisto is vulnerable to souls of great power or purity- The Silver Surfer & Thor have both injured him by directly contacting his form with their good souls.

Total: Abilities: 138 / Skills: 94--47 / Advantages: 38 / Powers: 245 / Defenses: 19 (487)

Mephisto- One Devil Among Many:
-One of those weird signs of the complexity of comic book storytelling comes by way of Mephisto and his contemporaries- Marvel wasn't satisfied just having ONE Hell-Lord- they decide to make SEVERAL, except it's generally inconsistent as to who's doing WHAT, especially since Mephisto was initially a "Non-Copywrite" version of Satan himself, being obviously inspired by Satanic imagery, but he had the "out" that he wasn't Lucifer himself (probably meant to avoid controversy or excuse leaving out more Biblical text). The only problem was, Marvel not only added a bunch MORE guys just like Mephisto, but also introduced the "real" Satan later (in the 1970s), but at the same time revealing Mephisto as being the "Satan" who appeared before Ghost Rider and others. So have fun figuring out who was what- not that it matters, as really all you need to know is that they're all Soul-Gathering Evil Guys with Hellish lineage.

Marvel's Best Satan:
-As the biggest name in the Hell Scene at Marvel, Mephisto gets the most use, fighting The Silver Surfer first (attempting to corrupt the hero's noble soul, but always failing in the end), then becoming a Dr. Strange villain- he's also fought the Norse God Thor, and the super-Catholic Daredevil (using a weird, more alien appearance). Plus he once stole Spider-Man's marriage, because happiness makes him mad. Especially the happiness of comic book readers, apparently.

-Mephisto has vexed pretty much every hero at one point or another, but is careful to avoid ACTUALLY losing more often than not. When he was jealous of the worship earned by the fire demon Zarathos, he schemed to have the guy bonded to Johnny Blaze- creating the Ghost Rider, and appearing as "Satan" to annoy the hero. During the Infinity Gauntlet crisis, Mephisto acted as Thanos's advisor and flunky- a careful scheme to ingratiate him to the new "God", and he turned on Thanos as soon as the tides shifted. He created a "son" in Blackheart, then manipulates Master Pandemonium in an attempt to gain control of the Scarlet Witch's powerful abilities, revealing that her beloved children were actually parts of his own body.
-His schemes result in the death of Mockingbird ('s Skrull imposter), then later he takes the MARRIAGE of Peter Parker out of existence, as a trade for his healing the fatal wounds of Aunt May. This weird retcon somehow returns Harry Osborn to life, which is weird, because they clearly didn't have many plans for him anyways. He temporarily dates Magma of the New Mutants in a bizarre twist that only makes sense when you remember that she used to date Empath (who's so evil that MEPHISTO worships HIM!), and he was once unseated as ruler of "Hell" by Strong Guy in X-Factor Investigations, but that was quickly overturned by the Red Hulk's Thunderbolts squad, in order to win themselves a ride out of Hell.

Mephisto- Appreciation For The Devil:
-Honestly, I've kind of learned to like Mephisto, who used to be one of my least-favorite villains as a kid (I think because I viewed him as weak-looking and wimpy compared to muscular guys like Doom, Thanos & The Juggernaut)- I kind of like that he's a manipulative dick and completely evil, yet rarely actually goes in to kill people. His role is temptation, making him much less boring than Nightmare & D'Spayre (who are thematically-similar), who are insanely one-note and result in the same kind of stories over and over again- Mephisto doesn't play on heroes' fears- he plays on their wants. And that makes him a much more insidious, dangerous bad guy. You can get twenty times the number of stories by playing on someone's motivation than you ever could on what they were afraid of.

-The fact that his activities often result in minor "wins" for him is all the better- in Secret Wars II he manages to save all existence (which benefits him, as, you know... HE'S part of existence! Plus, all those souls he wants!) from The Beyonder because a champion of his (Spider-Man, who was chosen for him- he wanted Thor or the Surfer) was able to resist temptation. In a great character bit, Mephisto still planned to CHEAT, but was prevented from doing so... but his own minions! Who would prefer OBLIVION to another day under his rule! Such a great moment, there- and despite his attempts to cheat, his "champion" still finds the will to stay true to himself, risking his life to save that of a monster like the Kingpin of Crime.

Powerful As Hell:
-Mephisto, like most Hell-Lords, possesses a CRAZY amount of power, but it's unclear as to which Hell-Lords are the toughest- Elder Gods like Set & Chthon are allegedly powerful enough to easily destroy the entire planet unopposed if not for the influence of the Demogorge chasing them away, and the fact that they're trapped in their own dimensions semi-permanently. Mephisto rarely seems quite so tough (he was borne of the evil thoughts of sentient beings AFTER the Elder Gods were banished, and thus he is a contemporary of Satannish & Thog as a Class Two Demon- he & Satannish once brawled without a victor emerging, so I imagine they have similar PLs), but then he DID throw down with Galactus at one point. He's certainly more powerful than the mere Pantheonic characters like Hades & Hela, as neither of those could even sniff Galactus' fart without dying... except one time Thor managed to basically straight-up stalemate Mephisto one-on-one (which he could never do against Zeus, who is MUCH more powerful than Hades or Hela). Sigh...

-In any case, Mephisto is a better talker than any of them, getting really high ranks in many of his Skills. He's a regular enough character in the comics that he gets a SWACK of powers all to himself instead of the lazy old "yeah, tons of Variable should do it", as we've seen him do a lot of stuff. Mephisto is high-level enough to likely defeat Odin or Zeus in one-on-one combat, but it's still pretty close- Mephisto does not invade our realm or Asgard because even HIS great forces would be greatly diminished in such an assault. In this manner, the Great Powers keep each other in check. Note also that Mephisto can change size and form, not to mention "alter hell" (something Gazman used in his build, but with Dimensional Movement instead- essentially Mephisto is Teleporting people around instead of actually altering Hell itself). Like Poseidon & Hades, Mephisto is more powerful within his own Realm, making him a PL 18 guy there.

Weakness (Purity)- Blackheart is vulnerable to souls of great power or purity, just like daddy.
Enemy (Mephisto)- Blackheart is his Father's son- this makes him evil and prone to betrayal, and dear old pops didn't like the end results. Both are now implacable enemies.

    Total: Abilities: 132 / Skills: 56--28 / Advantages: 23 / Powers: 176 / Defenses: 16 (375)

-Blackheart is the son of Mephisto, created to be a Daredevil foe at first, though he's since shifted to become more of a "General Villain", hunting guys like Dr. Strange, Wolverine, and more. Mephisto created him all Jesus-Like from the accumulative evil of the world- he attempts to tempt Daredevil and some allies, but the resist him. Blackheart ends up impressed by humanity, an act which disgusts Mephisto into banishing his son, warning him against using his powers again. He was the villain in the famous (for '90s kids) Wolverine/Punisher/Ghost Rider crossover, and I remember hearing a lot about him as a kid- I got into Marvel when the Marvel Cards were a thing, and he was featured prominently on them- just as much as his dad.

-Blackheart becomes an implacable enemy of Mephisto's, always driving various heroes (the Warheads, Wonder Man, Ghost Rider, etc.) to attack his father. However, he is ultimately killed by the demonic presence inside Ghost Rider- Noble Kale. Later, he appears alive without explanation, because hey- you expect writers to care? I mean, it's not like Wikipedia is a thing! His last big thing was a weird crossover featuring Ghost Rider, Red Hulk, Venom & X-23, where he tries to sacrifice all life on Earth, and a bunch of X-23 clones of his are destroyed.

-Curiously, this relative nobody was included in Marvel Super-Heroes, the Capcom fighting game, when MANY other, more popular characters were left behind (and yet he STILL wasn't the most obscure character there- Shuma-Gorath was by a long shot)- maybe the programmers just thought he looked cool? He's got a creepy, evocative image, that's for certain. But still, this guy tends to just be forgotten 90% of the time- comic writers discussing Hell-Lords tend to default to Mephisto (including undoing his death by Blackheart's hands, since naturally it turns out the kid is a traitor and schemer like his dad).

-Blackheart is really just Mephisto Lite in pretty much every single category, though his existence as a Darkforce Being makes him a Snare Guy in addition to the regular set of magical powers he has- I basically used Gazman's own build to figure out what PL to make Blackheart, as he's a bit iffy if you just read his bios- at one point he apparently has enough power to Telepathically tear a planet apart- at another point, he jobs to Wolverine, Ghost Rider & The Punisher, and many heroes just run right into hell to beat him up. So I got nothin'- he's more powerful in his home dimension, like many Elder Gods, Demons & stuff, but not quite to Cosmic Level.

    Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +16 (+6 Impervious), Fortitude +16, Will +13

    Complications:
Motivation (Gathering Souls & Power)- Mephista, like Mephisto, judges success by the amount of souls he possesses- he desires the souls of sentient beings. The more virtuous and noble the being, the better.
    Enemy (Satannish)
Relationship (Doctor Strange)- Mephista nurses a small crush on Doctor Strange, but opposes him because daddy commands it.

    Total: Abilities: 132 / Skills: 56--28 / Advantages: 23 / Powers: 177 / Defenses: 16 (376)

-Well I'll be damned- Mephisto has a DAUGHTER, and she debuted not one month before his SON! Mephista is the young, inexperienced daughter of Marvel's #1 Satanalogue, and was sent by her father to score the soul of Baron Mordo, then trapped within Doctor Strange's sphere of containment. However, the Demon Lord Satannish also had claims on Mordo, and when he attacked, Mephista was forced to team up with Doctor Strange. Though Satannish fought them off and fled, she developed a small crush on the Sorcerer Supreme. Later, during a brawl between Mephisto (who was furious with both his daughter, and Strange) and Satannish, she fights Strange again, and is defeated this time, trapped inside the Ruby of Cyttorak. The character then sits on the shelf for a VERY long time (Blackheart ends up far more famous and notable), before popping up in X-Factor Investigations, teaming up with the Celtic Goddess Morrigan.

-The sad thing about Mephista is that she's one of the most powerful female villains in the Marvel Universe, but is such an obvious D-Leaguer than she'll probably never get fair use- copying daddy's name and then jobbing to Doctor Strange means she can't be THAT tough, and so she doesn't even see the usage that Umar, Hela or Morgan Le Fay get. Marvel has all of these top-tier female baddies just waiting in the wings... yet appears unable to use any of them as effectively as they should. The A-List of their villains roster appears to be a continuous sausage-party.

-Mephista is basically just Blackheart with some minor modifications (no Darkforce Tendrils). She's powerful enough to almost kill Doctor Strange, but loses the mandatory rematch. Who knows how powerful she REALLY is, however.

-Satannish is one of the more "on-the-nose" Satanalogues in the Marvel Universe, and naturally was an opponent of Doctor Strange, who fights a lot of these guys. He was once called an agent and creation of The Dread Dormammu, but typically does his own thing, and is much more powerful. He has a cult, The Sons of Satannish, and frequently empowers humans to do his bidding, such as The Night Shift (a collection of horror-themed baddies). He had his life essence merged with Mehisto by Strange, after the two engaged in a huge battle, and appeared in Captain Britain & MI-13 imprisoned within Avalon (I assume he broke free from Mephisto)- Pete Wisdom freed him, and in payment, Satannish executed every single Skrull within the confines of the United Kingdom- he's laid low since then.

-Satannish is used fairly frequently for a Non-Mephisto Satanalogue, largely due to his distinctive appearance- he's got a big face on his stomach, standing out from the usual "Horned Red Guy" look.

-Satannish has powers equal to those of Mephisto.

My guess is Satannish got his name during the same conversation surrounding his creation.

Roy Thomas- "So in this story Satan is going to..."

Stan Lee- "We can't use Satan. Comics code and all that nonsense."

Roy Thomas- "Fine. this guy who's Satan-ish is going to..."

Roy and Stan pause, look at each other and grin.

I always liked Mephisto as a character. Guy really needs an event around him.

He had his own limited series in the late 80s, which did cross over into titles running at that time, so he's already had a small-scale event around him.

Relationship (The Punishier)- Olivier deliberately set up Frank Castle's family to be executed by the mob, knowing what would happen- he now gathers the souls the Punisher sends to Hell.

    Total: Abilities: 162 / Skills: 72--36 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 365 / Defenses: 21 (618)

-Frank Costa was a generic Mobster, but was the one responsible for the infamous slaying of Frank Castle's innocent family when they walked in on a gangland slaying. Castle, as The Punisher, witnessed him (though he was off-panel in the initial story). A comic from 1998 revealed that Costa was actually the human form of Olivier, a previously-unseen Hell-Lord who was once Prince of Archangels... this is during the "Angel-Punisher" years, I see. Oh God... it turns out he actually KNEW that Castle's family would walk in on the slaying, and thus Everything You Knew Was Wrong, that most-infamous and utterly-stupid of Comic Book Retcons. Why are writers so OBSESSED with that trope!?!

-So yeah, it turns out that he WANTED Castle to become The Punisher, because all of Castle's victims were to then become Olivier's slaves once his Costa form was done away with (he was only in that form because he was trapped by his rival Hell-Lords). He brainwashed Frank into killing himself, but Frank was resurrected by his Guardian Angel (oh god) who sent him on a war against Olivier's minions- the Angel Gadriel sacrificed his existence to stop Olivier, sending him into some... Hell Tentacles (this'd be the end of the "Angel Punisher" thing- the worst of the initial Marvel Knights run that was quickly-ignored). Olivier of course reappeared, working with the Demon Pazuzu in Lucifer's court, but Nightcrawler & Magik stopped them.

-Thog is a Steve Gerber creation, and spends most of his time thrashing the Giant-Size Man-Thing. Oftentimes, comic book writers (first Gerber, then Chris Claremont) are instrumental in defeating him, because writers are weird people. He initially appeared as a bat-like humanoid wearing shorts to protect his modesty, but later writers depict him as more human-like. One of the least-interesting or used "Satanalogues" at Marvel, I've never even heard of him till doing these.

-Thog is very weak compared to other Demon Lords, at least from what I've gathered. He has the same vague "Super-Powered, Mind-Possessing Demon Lord" and sits at the table with Mephisto, Satannish and others... but he's constantly losing to guys like the Man-Thing in straight-up fights. Even considering his Vulnerability to those kinds of attacks, that puts him in a lower tier than the others.

Motivation (The Destruction of Everything)- Zom exists only to destroy- the Living Tribunal was once forced to intercede when Dr. Strange unwisely summoned the beast.

    Total: Abilities: 162 / Skills: 72--36 / Advantages: 26 / Powers: 365 / Defenses: 21 (620)

-Zom is a Stan creation, and exists only to destroy. It apparently once took the combined efforts of Dormammu and ETERNITY to banish him the first time! Doctor Strange, when forced to do battle with Dormammu's sexy sister Umar, had the insane idea to UNLEASH this thing, hoping that it would fight Umar and the two would counteract each other. Umar wisely fled, leaving the idiotic Strange to try and mop this thing up- it took The Living Tribunal to come down and banish Zom, preventing him from wiping out the multiverse. Yes, a LITERAL Deus Ex Machina ending. Weird, WEIRD story, featuring the supposedly-wise hero nearly killing everyone on Earth.

-Strange later invoked his essence to gain tremendous power during World War Hulk, but lost control, barely-able to restrain the Zom-side long enough for Hulk to KO him. He later possessed Iron Man's Hulkbuster Armor and nearly wreaked havoc, but Amadeus Cho tricked him into possessing HIS body, at which point The Angel knocked him out, and the threat was ended.
