-Fields was a soldier whose story (he was captured, along with several platoon mates, during the Somali Civil War, and many died) was told by some Hollywood movie- not liking how the story was portrayed, he became a vocal anti-war activist, and was paralyzed by a pro-war protester. He was hardwired into a suit of Power Armour by Stark's satellite network. I like the concept of the Battlesuit, though- rather than just turn him into YET ANOTHER "Iron Man Lite", they make him a full-blown thirty-foot-tall MECH SUIT, packed with an arsenal that'd make an IMAGE hero blush.

-A Tae Kwon Do-expert actress with the power to summon organic, weird Golems, but she feels pain (I figure a Dazed/Stunned/Incapacitated Affliction at Rank 4 would do it) if one is destroyed, not quite earning a full Side Effect or any of that. She can summon two different types of Golem from what I've seen, but can only summon four (ish) of the Giant ones, and eight of the smaller ones. None of them appeared to be PARTICULARLY super-tough, but they push the overall character up to PL 8 in capability, even though she herself is only PL 6 as a fighter.

-Black here is the daughter of junkie grunge musicians (supposed to be Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love, basically), now orphaned. She can gain psychokinetic power from dormant energy due to historical events (??), and was kicked out and joined an all-girl gang, but was dumped from it for cheating on one of the girls. In The Order, she was given an Energy Mallet that allowed her to fly. She was killed by The Order's Anthem to save the city of L.A. after her powers threatened to destroy it (the Dhalias had given her out-of-control powers).

The Order were posted last in like mid-2016, so I figured I would just spam them out here, as they're both not that relevant to comics anymore, and quite relevant to my Initiative set. In any case, The Initiative builds are over- the next couple of days I'll spend re-posting older, non-comics themed stuff!

Just how many pointlessly-murdered lesbian characters does Marvel have at the moment? There's Phyla-Vell, Avril Kincaid*, Xavin, Victoria Hand, Jackpot, Man-Killer, Sunfire of the Exiles...

*Bonus points for Avril Kincaid being killed off, retconned to actually be in a coma in a later comic, and then subsequently killed off again for realsies this time.

Goodfellas

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

GOODFELLAS:
-GoodFellas is pretty easily the movie I'd consider the finest ever made. It's got it all: it's hilarious, it's stylish, it's beautifully-directed by Martin Scorsese (I'm not normally a nerd for that sort of thing, but that scene where Henry & Karen walk through the restaurant's back door and to the front in one single take? Amazing), it's violent, and it's full of some of the best dialogue in movie history. And the MUSIC- all of these songs are iconic as hell, and are picture-perfect. Probably the best movie soundtrack ever- except for possibly Top Gun... and maybe Transformers: The Movie. This is one of those movies that, even at three hours long, I immediately stop whatever I'm doing and keep watching it once I see it's on TV. Anyone who hasn't seen it is simply missing out- they must go out and see it. Immediately.

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Honour (The Code)- No killing "Made" Guys. No killing cops. No doing or dealing drugs. No ratting on your friends. Keep your mouth shut. Spoiler Alert: He does anyways.
Relationship (Karen)- Henry's wife is an angry, psychotic, vengeful spitfire of a woman who will punish him if she finds him straying.
Reputation (Half-Blood)- Henry's only half-Sicilian, so his family history can't be traced all the way to the old country. This means he'll never be a "Made" guy, and never move higher in the organization.
Addition (Cocaine)- Henry gets increasingly hooked on the Coke he sells, eventually becoming a sweaty, insane mess because of it.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 5 (75)

-Henry Hill is the main character and narrator of the film, a half-Sicilian kid from some tough streets that starts out as a "Gofer" for the mob, but moves up in power and influence, using the money to become a huge success. By movie's end, we find out the huge cost of his entire lifestyle. He had it made, and was somebody, but lost it all. Henry's a great example of an in-shape, smart criminal who nonetheless isn't a major powerhouse. He's charismatic and good-looking though, so he's got a way with women (he manages to talk his wife down while she had a gun pointed at his face once she uncovered his cheating ways- one hell of a Persuasion roll). He's basically an elite PL 5 criminal.

Complications:
Honour (The Code)- No killing "Made" Guys. No killing cops. No doing or dealing drugs. No ratting on your friends. Keep your mouth shut. Spoiler Alert: He does anyways.
Temper- Tommy is a sociopathic monster, prone to hyper-violent outbursts at a moment's notice, even to guys who were just screwing around, breaking balls, or were justifiably annoyed (poor Spider). Even his friends are often uneasy around him.
Secret (Billy Batts)- Tommy beat the living hell out of gangster Billy Batts when the latter was "breaking his balls", and ultimately ended up stabbing him. Billy was a Made Guy. This is a problem.

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 3 / Defenses: 6 (66)

-Tommy is an iconic character from the movie, and probably more famous than Henry, the main character. Hell, it pretty much gave Joe Pesci a role to play until he dies (his character in "Casino" is basically exactly the same guy). The scene where he intimidates Henry into thinking he said something wrong is one of the most famous pieces of dialogue in movie history, and showcases just how GOOD Pesci is at being scary. He seems hilariously sociopathic at first, but over time, you get to see just how bad this is for everyone around him, and he pays a pretty steep price for it. Two words: "Ohhh n--" *BLAM!* Tommy is based off of Tommy DeSimone, who had a similar history, but was actually a burly 6'1" enforcer, not a short guy with Small Man Syndrome.

-Tommy stats up as a lot scarier than Henry in melee, but he's a bit cheaper since he's generally less skilled (a common thug, really). He does have a modification of the old Rage Feat, giving him Batman-level Strength in combat for a few rounds. I combined Strength & Stamina together to make a clean three-point power (they'd separate into roughly 1.5 points each)- essentially, he boosts himself up dramatically and kicks the hell out of whoever he's dealing with. Note that despite being less Skilled than Henry, he has a positively HUGE supply of Advantages for what is essentially a Thug- this makes him much more devastating than his partners in combat.

Defenses:

Complications:
Honour (The Code)- No killing "Made" Guys. No killing cops. No doing or dealing drugs. No ratting on your friends. Keep your mouth shut. Spoiler Alert: He does anyways.
Reputation (Half-Blood)- Jimmy's only half-Sicilian, so his family history can't be traced all the way to the old country. This means he'll never be a "Made" guy, and never move higher in the organization.
Secret (The Lufthansa Heist)- Jimmy planned out the largest heist in American history, and is wracked with paranoia, thanks to nearly everyone involved failing to be conspicuous with the cover-up.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 8 (63)

-Jimmy (nicknamed "The Gent" because of his tendency to tip truck drivers he held up "for their trouble") was the leader of his mini-crew, and organized the Lufthansa Heist at the core of the movie. Robert DeNiro was awesome here as this cool, collected gangster who knew everyone's business, and could plan like nothing else. The real Conway, a man named Jimmy Burke, was a mosntrous physical presence known for brutality (he's lock the children of people indebted to him in refridgerators to ensure payment), whereas "The Gent" in "Goodfellas" is a more polite stone-cold killer who rarely fights, and focuses on the planning. This is reflected in an older, weaker build than the other two.

Leading the fight, one man fate has made indestructible. His name:"

CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS:
-Captain Scarlet was a great little show, filmed in the "Super-Marionation" style of Gerry Anderson, filmed with semi-lifelike puppets. This was the darkest of all his shows (the most famous of which was Thunderbirds, which I've actually never seen, beyond a single episode), featuring a gang of invisible Martian villains who murdered innocent people, duplicated their bodies, and used them to commit acts of murder, terror and destruction upon the human race (all because some humans accidentally blew up one of their cities). They were opposed by Spectrum, a group of international heroes (usually going by "Captain ______" with the latter being a colour) defending the planet.

-Captain Scarlet was the nigh-indestructible hero, fighting The Mysterons and their allies, Captain Black (himself a former Spectrum agent) and an assortment of murdered-humans-turned-Mysteron Agents. His partner and best friend was Captain Blue, and their leader was the stern, grumpy Colonel White. Backing them up were an assortment of minor Captains, and The Angels- a band of female fighter pilots. The series was popular enough to get a short-lived CGI remake in the 2000s (with really, REALLY awful-looking CGI), but like most non-Thunderbirds Anderson shows, it's been kind of forgotten to history.

-My personal memories of this show are of watching it as a kid on YTV- I don't recall when they aired it (it seems a bit of an odd fit for The Zone's afternoon programming), but it was definitely on their station for some time. I only vaguely remember it from back then (I was REALLY young), but my dad mentioned seeing it when he was a kid, and I thought Captain Black was BAD-ASS. I remember a bit of the Angels, too. My better memories come from about 8 years ago, watching BBC stuff on TV, and finding Captain Scarlet all of a sudden popping up on their schedule. Watching it again was a kick, though I believe it was taken off the air fairly quickly.

-Some of my favourite moments are situations where regular people are mortified at the flippancy with which most Spectrum Agents react to news of Captain Scarlet's "death", knowing that he'll get better. Better still is when Colonel White, furious with Scarlet's refusal of a direct order (that ended up saving the day), sentenced him "to DEATH!" "DEATH, sir?" at which point White points out that since Scarlet can't be killed, he'll be forced to just let the matter slide. Funny stuff.

-The show actually has an AMAZING "Fan Page" assortment: http://www.spectrum-headquarters.com/ca ... arlet.html is probably the best one. It contains scads of information, gleaned from multiple sources, giving backstory to even minor characters. It's basically one of those Tolkine bio-books, but for Super-Puppets. I actually found this site for the first time the LAST time I did Captain Scarlet builds.

Sample episode: Manhunt (featuring an act of "compassion" from Captain Black that may've just been a cover for his escape): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usUI7TIUtp8

S.I.G.! I'm quite familiar with Captain Scarlet (I had one of the two "movies", that were really just several episodes strung together with a loose narrative), and was pleasantly surprised when I first found your builds of the series. I read somewhere that they actually made a comic which gave the series an ending, but have yet to find said comic.
One of the most amusing things to me is just the end credits, featuring a (realistically-proportioned) Scarlet put in various death traps which probably wouldn't matter, since he is indestructible, after all.

I have to admit I didn't catch much of Captain Scarlet as a kid, despite actually being from the UK. Most of what was aired when I was growing up was instead Thunderbirds, with a handful of the other Supermarionation shows thrown in like Joe 90 and Stingray. I somehow basically entirely missed Captain Scarlet; it either wasn't on when I was available to watch it, or I was in my 'I'm probably too old for this' phase as a teenager when I did finally manage to catch some of it.

Odd how that works.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 15 (151)

-Enter Captain Scarlet, the primary soldier of Spectrum, and the sworn enemy of the Mysterons. Scarlet, through circumstance, was made indestructible as a Mysteron soldier, but his brainwashing didn't take (well, he resurrected himself and was the "original" Scarlet again- this never happens to any other Mysteron agents in the show, and no explanation was ever given as to why this happened), and now he's an invincible fighter on the side of Spectrum. Like a lot of kids show characters, the main character here is basically better than his partners at pretty much everything- he's smart, charismatic, dashing, brave and self-assured.

-Scarlet is designed here as part Super-Agent archetype, and part Immortal guy. He can resurrect himself upon death, but it takes over a day's time (leading to some humorous moments in the series when people who don't know his secret are offended by his friends' non-plussed reactions to his death). In the meantime, he's still pretty durable (the show's opening shows him being shot with a machine gun and not even moving). He's got the usual Spectrum gear, which is basically a gun, communications, and a Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle- essentially an armored car that's driven from a position in the middle, where the driver sits backwards, and maneuvers using a monitor screen to see where he's going.

My guess, casting the whole show in a very disturbing light -- the Mysterons allowed him to have his own mind to make the war of nerves a little more interesting. Walk-overs are boring, you see ...

-Captain Blue was one of those TV show Sidekicks who's really about as competent and skilled as the main hero- he just lacks the invincibility. Blue is calm, collected and wise- and considers Scarlet his best friend. He also has a pretty obvious thing for Symphony Angel, demanding to be allowed to rescue her when she's in danger, and often sharing long looks or being overly-concerned with her well-being. The CGI remake made him into a more action-packed Rambo-style gung-ho character.

-There were actually quite a few of these guys, but as a kid I only recall Captains Magenta & Ochre. Most of them are mere generic background guys who get a couple of lines, but fall way subserviant to Captains Blue & Scarlet. They're all about PL 6.5 overall, with the main Captains being quite a bit better overall.
