Cuchulainn in Mythology: Cuchulainn (pronounced either "coo-coolin" or "coo-hoolin" for whatever reason) should really be more famous. This is basically the God of Heavy Metal Music, an Irish folkloric figure who is known for his tremendous blood-lust and thirst for battle, said to have slain hundreds of men in fights and building walls from their corpses. I tried to read into his mythology, but the sheer amount of insane names and weird spellings mess with me, and I can't really get into it (I have the same issues with Shinto Mythology). He's the star of the "Ulster Cycle", a mythology that goes from Ireland to Scotland, to the Isle of Man.

-Cuchulainn, The Hound of Ulster, is the son of Lugh, and his terrifying battle-frenzy single-handedly saves his people in a war against Queen Medb by calling for the "Right of Single Combat", and defeating challenger after challenger over a period of months, because he is Alpha. He defeats the warrior-woman Scathach's sister Aife in the way a truly Alpha Male does, by distracting her and promising to spare her if she bears him a son. Alas, he kills the boy when he spots him sneaking about, and is beside himself with grief. He engages in more manliness and woman-bedding, but is finally slain when he's weakened by eating dog meat (their culture had a ban on refusing hospitality, and was thus forced to eat a woman's doggie-based meal) and being struck by a magical spear. But even his DEATH is Alpha, as he ties his entrails to a stone, allowing him to die standing up and still fighting.

-Marvel actually has used two distinct versions of this guy- one in Guardians of the Galaxy, where he was a brave Class 100+ hero who fought alongside the heroes. In a more recent Thor story, Thor and the Warriors Three had to fight Cuchulain, and he held them all off before Hogun intercepted his Magic Spear, Slaughter, and he ran away after that. Which seems to be the exact opposite of what you'd expect from a bloodthisty, psychopathic warrior.

-I built two versions of the dude, since there seem to be two variants on him (messed-up continuity? Well, he IS an immortal God, prone to changing alignment, appearance & the Guardians' time WAS centuries later, so it makes a certain kind of sense. One is a Raging psycho (given an Uncontrolled Flaw like The Hulk) who can fend of Thor & The Warriors Three at once, the other is a guy who can put down Drax the Destroyer in a one-on-one fight using more Standard Brawling Tough Guy tactics. Both are PL 13 guys, and generally not to be screwed with.
The spelling of Irish names is still an issue for most outside of the country, 'Siobhan' for instance is pronounced 'Shivaun' and 'Naimh' is pronoucned 'Neave'
'A shared universe, like any fictional construct, hinges on suspension of disbelief. When continuity is tossed away, it tatters the construct. Undermines it'

THE FOMORIANS (Celtic):
Skyfather:
Elathan (Sky)
Others: Balor (Sun), Bres (Mischief), Cethlann (Prophecy), Dulb (Weaponry), Indech (Earth), Tethra (Sea)
-The Fomorians are a supernatural race that represent the primal, destructive elements of the world. They are sworn enemies of the Tuatha De Danaan. Intermarrying with the Tuatha (Balor is the grandfather of Lugh, King of the Tuatha, for example), they are much like the Jotun of Norse Mythology. They may have been based off of some prior Gods whose worship had been stamped out. Balor is killed by Lugh in the final battle between the two, and the surviving Fomorians are driven into the sea.

Notable Members:
BALOR: A giant with one eye on his forehead that kills all who look upon it: "It was always covered with seven cloaks to keep it cool. He took the cloaks off one by one. At the first, ferns began to wither. At the second, grass began to redden. At the third, wood and trees began to heat up. At the fourth, smoke came out of wood and trees. At the fifth, everything got red hot. At the sixth...... At the seventh, the whole land caught fire". Balor slays Nuada in battle, beheading him, but is himself slain by Lugh (Balor's grandson, who was fated to kill him), who spears his eye through the back of his head, LIKE A BOSS, and the eye then destroys the Fomorian army.

-Marvel's Balor is powerful enough to fend off the Avengers for quite some time, and led the Fomor against the team. He was only beaten when a sorcerer absorbed all of Balor's energies into a magical gem. In the Black Knight's solo book, he defeated Dane Whitman & Dr. Strange on behalf of Morgan Le Fay. Balor disappeared for some time, but was resurrected in a smaller form by Satana in a Thunderbolts issue.

90%, tops.

Like if St. Patrick is involved, you probably have an authentic tale.

If St Patrick is in a story then far being it an original story, its one that the church has already got its mitts on and sanitised it and reissued it for propaganda for the new Christian religion. It would be the farthest thing on the planet from a real depiction of the original religion, because its designed to make the other side look worse or co-opt the message to their side.

I know, right? Who just MAKES UP religion? The fact that the "authentic" story changes from town to town is not indicative of anything :).

Bres in Mythology: Bres is said to be a beautiful Fomorian in the myths. He was a Fomorian who was made king of the Tuatha de Danann, but favored his Fomorian kin. The Tuatha stage a revolt, and Bres is defeated in battle- he pleads for his life to Lugh, who spares him when Bres vows to teach the Tuatha agriculture.

-Bres is a trickster and manipulator, telling the Fomorians of an ideal time to attack the Avengers- however, it was meant to only be advantageous towards himself. He managed to stymie Thor by keeping Mjolnir trapped in a force field for the full minute, but She-Hulk remembered the Fomorians's weakness to iron... and simply threw Iron Man at him. Thor promptly beat the snot out of him. The character reappeared years later in Power Man and Iron Fist of all places, where he breaks free from Project: Pegasus and tries to turn the young hero Captain Hero (who we'd later learn was Super-Skrull, but the current writer didn't know that) evil, and turns the Guardsman (Pegasus's defender) against Iron Fist and the Falcon. Guardsman defeats the Falcon, but Iron Fist beats him in turn, and resists the powers of Bres, as the Fomorian finds that Danny Rand has "no dark side" with which to manipulate. Bres simply had Danny chained instead, but Captain Hero refused to slay him- resisting Bres, he provided the distraction Danny needed to one-shot-KO Bres with the "Iron Fist" technique.

-Bres has a lot of random powers thrown together- Blasts, Illusions, Future Sight, and even a form of Mind Control that can either leave people demoralized (Impaired & Disadled) or fully under his control (like what happened to The Guardsman).

Y'know, Cuchullain is like the tenth guy I've built and only discovered after the fact that he was a "1993 Annual" creation. I shoulda posted all those guys in a "set", but finding out who actually DEBUTED then has proven rather difficult- complete lists are hard to find.

But yeah, 1993 saw every annual release some douchey '90s character, complete with a Collectible Card sealed inside, back when Collector Cards were a HUGE deal. The most famous of these guys are Adam-X (The X-TREME!!!!!) and The X-Cutioner, but apparently Cuchullain was the Guardians of the Galaxy's inclusion into that bit. One of those vampire characters whose name I've already forgotten was one of them, too.

yeah, I re-watched that and the Odin one the other day, in anticipation of some of these builds. I bought the "Season Two- Part Two" box set YEARS ago, because it contained the last few episodes of the series! Gargoyles was initially released on some very nice sets, with Greg Weisman giving pre-commentary on all the episodes... but they didn't sell well enough to continue, and Disney never bothered to release the last set!! So I had to wait something like five years, quite a ways after I'd last seen the show, to pick up the remainder of the show! Alas, this one appears to have no commentaries or ANYTHING special- just "hey, here's the episodes". In a sense, it reminds me of the infamous Jem & The Holograms DVD set release, where they ALSO didn't release the last season, and finally came out with it almost the same length of time later, also without any bells & whistles attached.

The Hound of Ulster has some truly horrifying sounds from the Banshee, which are really piercing and freaky. Alas, Bronx doesn't seem to do much more than appear before a guy, help him out of a hole, then fight the Giant Worm Creature. It's funny seeing the usual heroes just sit in a hole for the entire episode, though.

The Odin one's an interesting bit for the douchiness of the God (who does not mention having a whole Pantheon), and he just makes demands and threats, leading to a fight. Goliath takes the Eye of Odin and empowers himself, but his personality becomes exaggerated, as he becomes over-protective and controlling.

The lack of commentaries is due to the fact that it was released initially, only to the disney fan club for purchase, and thus was not in the mainstream distribution. As such they did not bother to even contact the creators, cast and other directors when they made it, to the point the creators, cast and other directors were blindsided when it came out on dvd

-I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to the symbolism of the great hero defeating a giant, one-eyed beast that could destroy everything by shooting stuff out of it.

-Marvel's Balor is powerful enough to fend off the Avengers for quite some time, and led the Fomor against the team. The one-eyed monster was only defeated when a sorcerer absorbed all of Balor's energies into a magical gem. In the Black Knight's solo book, he defeated Dane Whitman & Dr. Strange on behalf of Morgan Le Fay, but appeared to be less powerful, and didn't use his powers as often. Balor disappeared for some time, but was resurrected in a smaller form by Satana in a Thunderbolts issue. Typically, he's just a single-minded goon, though his first incarnation is DEVASTATING.
