You mean like 98% of the world's religions, systems of government and societal rules? Perish the thought. ;)
I know, right? Who just MAKES UP religion? The fact that the "authentic" story changes from town to town is not indicative of anything :).
Some of the stories that were purposely left out of the bible actually survived, there's one about Jesus saving his mother, Joseph, his three brothers and a sister from a Dragon.

I shoulda posted all those guys in a "set", but finding out who actually DEBUTED then has proven rather difficult- complete lists are hard to find.

But yeah, 1993 saw every annual release some douchey '90s character, complete with a Collectible Card sealed inside, back when Collector Cards were a HUGE deal. The most famous of these guys are Adam-X (The X-TREME!!!!!) and The X-Cutioner, but apparently Cuchullain was the Guardians of the Galaxy's inclusion into that bit. One of those vampire characters whose name I've already forgotten was one of them, too.
The vampire guy is Night Terror.

brothersale wrote: Sun Nov 05, 2017 6:48 am If St Patrick is in a story then far being it an original story, its one that the church has already got its mitts on and sanitised it and reissued it for propaganda for the new Christian religion. It would be the farthest thing on the planet from a real depiction of the original religion, because its designed to make the other side look worse or co-opt the message to their side.
What I mean is, if it's a "St. Patrick meets the old gods" story than it was probably written down in the 8th or 9th century and is an authentic bit of folk mythology. Will it represent the old gods well? Probably not. One element of Irish mythology (as opposed to Norse mythology) is that the gods are rarely even identified AS gods, but rather referred to as immortals, fallen angels, or some other explanation. Still, if it comes from 1100 years ago, it's at least an authentic myth about St. Patrick. There are plenty of those and they are part of the corpus.

In contrast, a lot of what is considered the mythology of Ireland was pretty much cooked up in the 19th century by poets, artists, and aesthetes who created a movement specifically to reclaim Irish myth (Yeats was at the forefront). A lot of stuff about the goddess Brigid, for example, they discovered just by thinking about her a lot. That's what I meant by "most of it is made up." Of course it's all fiction, but in the case of Classical mythology and to an extend Norse mythology, you at least have a survival of pre-Christian material. Irish myth is a lot more complicated.

I know less about the heroic tales, but I reckon those are closer to being authentic as old myths, mostly because they are about mortal men and woman (with extraordinary abilities) and while they interacted with the old gods quite a bit, there's no need for the Celtic clergy to be ambivalent about the heroes' divinity in the way they were with Tuath. Cuchulainn and Fionn and the like were never meant to be gods, while the Dagda and Morrigan and Lugh were, and that sort of thing apparently rankled the monks of Ireland who recorded this stuff more than it did, say, Snorri Sturleson. So while we have the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda (and a version of Norse myth where Odin is a guy from central Asia), the survival of Irish mythical tales concerning the old gods is a lot rarer, and what we do have is a mish-mash of stuff. There likely weren't two battles of Magh Tuiredh originally, for example, and there are multiple origin stories for the Tuath, all of them designed to avoid making them literal gods.

Zoroastrian Gods

Post by Jabroniville »

THE YAZATAS (Zoroastrian/Persian):
Skyfather:
Ahura Mazda (Creation)
Others: Ahriman (Evil), Ameretat (Vegetation), Armaiti (Earth), Asha (Fire), Atar (Fire), Haurvatat (Water), Kshathra Vairya (Metal), Mithra (Light & Justice), Vohu Manah (Animals)
-Another mostly-unknown one (coming from a land of Islam will do that to a Pantheon), these guys are really minor. Zoroastrianism was once a major religion of the Middle East, predating Judaism, but fell into disuse when Islam took the area by storm- it was founded when Zoroaster claimed to have received a revelation. The Parthian Empire are known worshippers, but iconoclastic beliefs (the same ones that eventually led to Mohammed's imagery being taken down- this does not appear in the Quran) led to his imagery being taken down.

-Though very obscure these days, the religion is most certainly still around, primarily in India, far from its birthplace (similar to how Buddhism is more popular in East Asia than in India, where it was born)- it's illegal to be Zoroastrian in the former Persia (Iran), though the numbers are falling and number only in the thousands, rather than the millions of most major religions. They have hardly any access to the Marvel Universe, but Dr. Strange, The Thing, and Conan have all met a Priest of Ahriman in a Marvel Two-In-One issue.

AHURA MAZDA: The creator and sole God of Zoroastrianism, his name literally means "Lord Wisdom". It was standard for a leader to ride into battle alongside an empty white chariot, thus inviting Ahura to join in the battle.
ANGRA MAINYU/AHRIMAN: An evil, Satan-like being. Known as Ahriman in Marvel, and much evil is done in his name, primarily in the Conan the Barbarian book.
FIRE (ATAR): Zoroastrians revere fire in all its forms, though in some cases it takes on real divinity- atar is either "Holy Fire", or an actual God.
MITHRA: Mithra was a huge God back in the day- the Emperor Constantine was a Mithraist before he converted to Christianity. In fact, many Christian aspects are pretty much directly taken from Mithraism (his birthday, for example, was on December 25th- Christ's birthday was never recorded), something that Christian leaders struggled with for a while (they went with "they stole it from us!" until it was too clear that was impossible, as Mithraism pre-dates Christianity- they settled on "Satan did it to confuse later people!"). The God of Light, called "Mitra", was a frequent ally of Conan the Barbarian, opposing the evil works of Ahriman, as one of the kinder, more benevolent Gods of the Conan setting of Hyboria.

Chinese Gods

THE XIAN (Ancient China):

Yu Huang (Heaven)
Others: Guan Yu (War), Kui Xing (Paperwork & Examinations), Lei Gong (Thunder), Nezha (Mischief), Shou-Hsing (Health & Longevity), Tian-Mu (Lightning), Xi Wangmu (Immortality), Yen-Lo Wang (Death), Yu Zhu Rong (Fire)
-These guys are an odd mix of Celestial Bureaucracy and the Old Gods of China (pre-Buddhism). Their names and titles are evocative of the Iron Fist characters, with overly-complex names and descriptions. They don't show up in Marvel very much, if at all- typically it's just Yu Huang in a group of other Godheads.

Okay, this is the DC version of the character. Still basically looks the same.

YU HUANG- THE JADE EMPEROR: Not a Creator God, he ascended to the position of Jade Emperor naturally, after showing his might, benevolence and wisdom. He has appeared a few times in Marvel Comics, typically only as the background guy in a group of other Gods- he gave power to restore the Asgardians, contemplated the Celestials, and considered Thor to have failed the test to replace Odin as head of his Pantheon.
GUAN YU: A real-life figure from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms era who was so respected that he came to be worshipped, and is now largely a mythological figure. Doesn't appear in Marvel's books.

African Gods

THE VODU (West Africa):
Skyfather:
Buluku (Sky)
Others: Anansi (Wisdom & Trickery), Avlekete (Sea), Dam-Ayido Wede/Damballah (Serpents), Eleggua/Eschu (Crossroads & Communication), Ghekre (Gorilla God- Judgment), Legba (Gateways), Ogun (War), Oshun/Ezili (Love), Oya (Wind), Sagbata/Baron Semedi (Death & Disease), Shango/Xevioso (Thunder & Lightning)
-These guys moved from Africa to the Caribbean, Jamaica and Lousiana thanks to the slave trade- often merging beliefs with those of Christianity. Voodoo is an offshoot of some of these beliefs. In Marvel, they are frequently called the "Loa", and get involved in Voodoo-themed stories. Marvel's "Vodu" comprise many different African myths, and kind of conflate what was an enormous region's various mythologies into one little group. Considering that the Aztecs, Incans and Mayans ALL get "Official Gods", and the much-larger Africa gets them all in one, it's a little weird, but just goes to show you how little we know of Ancient Africa or the beliefs of the thousands of scattered tribes, most of which even a pro could barely keep straight.

Notable Members:
BULUKU: The female creator of everything, and Chief God of many West African religions, usually called "Nana Buluku". In Marvel, Buluku is a male God who mated with Gaea to produce most of the others, and is usually seen as one of those "Background Faces", the Token Black Guy of the "Council of Godheads". Yes, there are literally two Native guys and three Mesoamerican guys in that group, but only one black guy. RACISTS.
LEGBA: Legba is the God of Gateways, and helped create the first Brother Voodoo.
DAMBALLAH: An evil Snake God (who shares the name with a serpentine Spawn of Set), invoked by evil Voodoo-themed characters, such as the Black Talons.
OYA: Goddess of Winds, she gives her name to the young X-Woman Idie, who is pretty much ONLY referred to by her first name these days.
ANANSI: EASILY the most famous part of African folklore to outsiders, Anansi is a Spider Trickster God. Small and weak, he used his smarts and wisdom to fool more powerful adversaries, making him a powerful symbol when many people telling his tales were enslaved by Europeans. Br'er Rabbit is a similar character, with the same kind of role, and may have originated from Anansi Fables. Anansi appears a few times in Marvel, such as in Herc, where a traveling storyteller named "A. Nancy" swipes an artifact of Arachne's and disappears. Ezekiel, when talking to Peter Parker about the Spider-Totem's origins, refers to Anansi as "The First Spider-Man".
SHANGO: The God of Iron, who gives his name to cartoonish WWF wrestler Papa Shango (a voodoo practitioner who once made the Ultimate Warrior bleed black, and also barf one time). A powerful Marvel God with a Throwing Iron, Shango aided Thor against the Demogorge, but was swallowed and had to be rescued. He could also fly on clouds.

And opiphobia strikes again, as Damballa is in fact the benevolent (albeit somewhat creepy) sky father of real world Vodou. (Really, it's not so much fear of snakes as good old fashioned racism, but whatchagonnado?)

Filipino Gods

Post by Jabroniville »

THE DIWATAS (Philippines):
Skyfather:
Bathala (Sky)
Others: Aman Sinaya (Sea), Amihan (Wind), Anitun (Wind, Lightning & Rain), Apo Laki (War & Sun), Aswang (Evil), Mayari (Moon), Tala (Stars)
-I've never even heard of these guys. Anitun was apaprently a Filipino super-hero with the Triumph Division, but Ezekiel Stane sent a group of terrorists to kill all of them, including Anitun's mortal form- but she returned in another form. This is literally the only appearance of these Gods in Marvel- they do not appear in the "Council of Godheads".

Spam says thusly about these guys:
Just tossing my thoughts on the Filipino gods, or more precisely, Tagalog gods, since the Phillipines are a crap ton of islands that don't speak the same languages or have the same traditions. Down south the visayans had their own pantheon, and others had either blended together a little of each, or had their own unique set of gods. One thing they all have in common is that hardly any Filipinos know the slightest thing about them. They've been nearly 90% Christian for ever since Magellan found them, and before that they were conquered by the Moslems, neither of which are known for preserving existing religious beliefs. A near complete lack of written records before the Spanish doesn't help, either. Oddly enough they do still believe in their magic and witch doctors and monsters, though. Even devout Catholics will get a charm from the witch doctor if they can't afford a 'western' doctor. And I've heard it on good authority that if you pee on the wrong tree you'll wake up paralyzed the next day, and if someone sticks a dried turtle dick in your pocket, the next time you have sex you'll get stuck together and die. So I guess the Spanish didn't stamp out everything when they took over.

Aman Sinaya was a generally a male, as far as I've seen. Aswang is either a particular type of monster/demon, several types of demons, or a blanket term for pretty much any monster, depending on where you are and who you ask, although someone of that name was the god of evil to the Bicolano culture. The ever popular Manananggal is often considered an aswang.

BATHALA: The supreme creator of all things.
APOLAKI & MAYARI: Spam: "Apolaki (Sun/War god, I've never seen it spelled two words like Marvel has done), Mayari (Moon), Tala (Stars), and according to some tales Hanan (Morning) by either one or several mortal women. Mayari was the most beautiful goddess in her father's court, and both her and her brother's eyes were said to shine to brightly to look upon. When Bathala died (or went into the Bathala Sleep, or whatever), Apolaki and Mayari each thought they should be in charge so they fought each other. Apolaki poked out his sisters eye with a stick, and realized his error, so they decided to share rulership, with each ruling for half the day. With only one eye, the moon only shines half as bright as the sun."
ANITUN: Anitun, or a mortal empowered by her, was a member of the Triumph Division, and was replaced by a new one when that one was killed.
ASWANG: Actually the name of a Filipino Cryptid, not a God of Evil throughout most of the Phillipines (though the Bicolano culture refers to him as such, most tribes thing of them as Cryptids or a generic term for monsters). An Aswang is an intelligent shapeshifter that preys on humans. Known to devour fetuses (through a long proboscis) and small children, or human corpses. Known to be neighborly with humans living beside them (Filipino phrase: "better and Aswang than a thief"), but will prey upon strangers. Aswang detection is unusual (looking at them upside-down will reveal the trick; if you look into their eyes and your reflection is upside-down, they are an Aswang). They are killed by garlic, salt & religious artifacts, very similar to European Vampire traditions.

-Another one I've never heard of- I assumed the Finns would worship the same guys as the Norsemen did. But various peoples worshipped an assortment of Gods, some of which using similar names. The Sami people (what Kristoff in Frozen is inspired by) are among the past worshippers. The only time they've ever been seen in Marvel Comics was when Ukko appeared as part of a council during Chaos War.

I'm mostly familiar with the version of them presented in Elias Lonnrot's Kalevala, which inspired the Finnish Mythos section in Deities and Demigods.

Egyptian Gods

THE HELIOPOLITANS (Egypt):
Skyfather:
Horus (Sun)
Others: Anubis (Jackal God- Afterlife), Bes (Luck & Probability), Sobek (Crocodile God- Rivers), Geb (Earth), Isis (Fertility), Khonshu (Moon), Sekhmet (Lion God- War), Osiris (The Dead), Nut (Heavens), Bast (Panther God- Pleasure, Poetry & Dance), Ra (Primordial Sun God), Seth (Evil), Thoth (Wisdom)
-These Gods are pretty famous for having animal heads, and Egyptian Pharaohs were considered to be Living Gods as well. Many, many Gods are associated with Death, as the Egyptians had more celebrations and preparations for the afterlife than anyone. These Gods were worshipped way back in the Early Kingdoms (which go so far back we don't have much writing on them at all- many are said to have been destroyed by vague "Sea Peoples"), and lasted until the Ptolemaic Dynasties and Ancient Rome, both of which thought that the animal-headed Gods were primitive. The sheer breadth of time these guys inhabited means they changed a lot, there are dozens of them, and they're usually less well-known than the Greek Gods, despite being world-famous beings.

-In Marvel, these guys probably show up third-most after the Greek & Norse Gods, often with Seth as a Big Bad Villain. Horus is typically seen just sitting around observing stuff, or being helpless against Seth's plots. Others like Thoth and Anubis are typically just backgrounders.

ANUBIS: The famous Jackal-headed Death God, Anubis was a positive figure, and would weigh a person's heart on the scales against "Ma'at" (truth), deciding whether or not they'd earned a spot in the afterlife.. He was initially the Lord of the Underworld, but was later replaced by Osiris in the cults, as the culture shifted- Anubis was then the guardian of tombs and cemeteries. Despite appearing as one of the most commonly-seen Gods in Egyptian art and temples, he appears in almost no myths. He is either the son of Hesat (a cow-goddess) or Bastet (a cat), while another features him as the son of Ra himself. Recent analysis suggests that Anubis was never meant to be a jackal at all, but the Egyptian Golden Wolf, judging by some of the mummified carcasses left in tribute. In Marvel, he briefly appeared in Son of Satan, opposing the book's hero, but he ultimately realized he was being manipulated.
OSIRIS: The eventual Lord of the Underworld. Another good figure, he was slain by the jealous Set, and his severed penis was used to impregnate his wife Isis with the God who became Horus. Osiris was then resurrected and became ruler of the depths, replacing Anubis in the cults- this makes him a God of Vegetation as well, as resurrection is all about the cycles of nature and stuff. He is either the son of Geb (Earth) or Ra (Sun). In Marvel, he often appears as the "Godhead" of the Pantheon, such as in The Infinity Gauntlet, or as part of the group that informs Thor he is unworthy to become the Asgardian Skyfather.
RA: The famous Creator God, often shown with a falcon's head. Later dynasties in fact merged him with Horus entirely, and he later got combined with Amun, too (forming Amun-Ra). Ra is also a Sun God.
AMUN: The most-recorded of the Egyptian Gods, alongside Osiris.
ISIS: Isis is the most-famous female Egyptian Goddess, and the loyal wife of Osiris, and mother to Horus. She is a Goddess of Children, Motherhood and more, having supplanted Hathor for the most part, to the point where even the Greeks and Romans began to worship her! She is still worshipped today by many Pagans.
THOTH: The distinctive Thoth has the head of an ibis (sometimes a baboon), and is a God of Wisdom, Arbitration, Magic, Writing and Science.
ATEN: Aten is famously one of the first examples of Religious Extremism, Fakery & Discrimination at work. The Pharaoh Akenaten declared himself to be a worshipper of a God he'd more or less made up entirely, known as Aten (a Sun God), replacing the entire Egyptian pantheon with this guy. This was in order to define himself as a new, uber-powerful ruler. Akenaten was a hated ruler, and worship of Aten was banned almost as soon as he'd died (he is banished from the "List of Kings", and refered to as "that criminal" in writing). The destruction caused by Akenaten's removal of the other Gods has thus stolen huge amounts of the heritage of Ancient Egypt, something that still makes him infamous in scholarly circles to this day. And his wife is much, MUCH more famous than he is- she's known as Nefertiti.
SOBEK: Sobek was a fairly "fluid" (ie. they changed worship of him a lot) deity, being a crocodile-headed God of War and Protection. The Egyptians of course would have deeply respected and feared the mighty Crocodiles that inhabited the Nile River and Africa as a whole.
HATHOR: A feminine Mother Goddess, sometimes depicted as a cow or cow-headed Goddess, and one of the most popular deities throughout the history of Ancient Egypt, though she's barely known at all today (translation: she doesn't have a cool animal's head). Isis took over much of her role. In Marvel, Hathor is an alternate form of the vicious Sekhmet, and speaks like a LOLcat.
