For a while there, I was starting to study Odinism from the old player Blue_Cobalt. He also wrote a series of novels that involved his faith. Reading the Eddas was a lot of fun. Reading some of the more New Age guides not so much. Then again, one of the reasons that I really dislike the SPLC is that they declared the entire religion a hate group. Yay!

If you are interested in panAsian mythologies, the Kylie Chan / Dark Heavens series is a ton of fun, loaded with Taoist/Buddhist/Confucian easter eggs. I mean, how cool is the main male lead being Xian Wu/John Woo- them hanging out with the other Four Winds and all reporting to the JE (Jade Emperor). On the other hand, the main female character is an author avatar Mighty White Mary Sue.

kenma- any thoughts on the Asura's Wrath video game? I've watched a little of it, pretty incomprehensible but gloriously over the top.

SHARRA AND K'YTHRI:
-The two Gods were never seen "for reals" until the Chaos War, where Amatsu-Mikaboshi was seen killing and taking over the pair.
They have since reappeared alive in Mighty Thor

That game is awesome. It is so over-the-top it may as well be made entirely of cheese...but it’s so fun. What other game’s first boss is larger than the planet you’re on and whose last boss is, basically, God?

Mesopotamian Gods

THE ANNUNAKI (Mesopotamia):
Skyfather:
Anu (Heaven)
Others: Aqhat, Ba'al (Storms), Dagon (Wind & Air), Ereshkigal (The Dead), Inanna/Ishtar (Love & War), Marduk (Judgment & Magic), Nergal (Death & Pestilence), Ningal (Metal), Saja (Messengers), Tammuz (Shepherds & Fertility), Tiamat (Giant Evil Dragon)
-These are among the most ancient of pantheons in real life, and they have some EPIC names that remain quite memorable, and often used in Fantasy worlds as bad-asses. And you GOTTA love the idea of the Goddess of Love being the same as the Goddess of War- that is f*cking metal. Many of these guys were transformed into Demons in the Marvel Universe after Christianity & others supplanted their worship- Innana/Ishtar among them. Like a lot of ancient religions, there's a lot of retcons and new stories flying about, and many of these Gods listed above were actually the "Chief God" of one people at some time or another.

-Lilith (a "Ghost Rider" foe who was a major player in the Spirits of Vengeance cross-over when GR was REALLY popular) is related to them mythologically as a Wind Demon. The only other member of any import is the Eternal Gilgamesh, who is of course the star of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the world's most famous ancient poem.

Notable Members:
ANU: The creator of the universe, who was later supplanted in worship by his son Enlil.
ISHTAR: Also called Inanna, who was a more benevolent form of the Goddess. The Babylonians changed aspects to "Ishtar", and created a much more mercurial, capricious, and jealous Goddess. The Goddess of Sex and War (METAL), she would frequently take lovers, many of whom would end up broken at the end of the affair (NICE). She appears in a few Marvel books, namely as a major figure in the mythology of the Hyborian Age in Conan the Barbarnian. Later, as Inanna, she is apprently slain by a God-killing weapon of Jaine Cutter's.
MARDUK: An upstart God who, with the advances of the Babylonians, came to be called their main God. This was explained away via a story in which he took power and beat down Tiamat. In Marvel, Warren Ellis used him as the "true father" of Daimon Hellstrom. Unfortunately, Fabian Nicieza ALSO used the God as a villain, but in a contrary way to Ellis's version, and so the character was split, hence Hellstrom now being the son of "Marduk Kurios", who is sometimes mistaken for the Babylonian God.
NERGAL AND ERESHKIGAL: Gods of Death and the Underworld, known for evil actions, despite their love for each other.
TAMMUZ: An agricultural God, notable for people staging funerals for him during the droughts of summer.
DAGON: Likely a fertility or agricultural God, he is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as being the national God of the Philistines.
TIAMAT: Actually starts off as a mother figure, giving birth to the generation of Gods that usurps her and her husband. Slain, she is reborn as a monstrous Dragon, and is ultimately killed by Marduk, who becomes the new leader of the Gods.
NINGAL: A Smith God, Ningal appeared as an antagonic in Doctor Strange for a while, largely as an evil Dark God, teaming up with the Dweller-In-Darkness.
PAZUZU: An evil Wind God, Pazuzu gives his name to a Dungeons & Dragons Demon King, and to a Marvel character who's a walking retcon- in Howard the Duck, Pazuzu was an evil Sumerian deity, while years later in Nightcrawler, he was one of the Angels who stood with Lucifer, and fell with him. In his comics incarnation, he's a wish-granting Genie-like figure who can wreak havoc if not dismissed properly.
SAJA: A Messenger God who briefly appears before the first Arabian Knight, taunting him about his journey home, before a single blow from the Magic Scimitar sends him back to his people.
BA'AL: Ba'al was a God of the Canaanites, though his name came to be a title given to all chief Gods (even the Hebrews did this). The Hebrews may have been calling him a pile of dung when they came up with the name "Beelzebub", referring to the God of their rivals as the "Lord of the Flies". In Marvel, he had been successfully tempted by Marduk Kurios, and thus transformed into a highly-powerful demon. He threatened Wolverine in the '80s, then Johnny Blaze in the '90s, largely through his perverse cultists.

Lilith is a funny one. She's been used as a generic mother of monsters in too many places to count.

I think my favorite story about her is as Adam's first wife that was too 'uppity' so God replaced her with the much more meek Eve... that lead Adam to Awareness. Doh!

Gaea in Mythology: Well, jeez. Name a mythology, and it tends to have an "Earth" figure. Many of the most ancient figures of worship were "Mother Figures" with large breasts and hips, indicating fertile womanhood (humans have pretty shit luck with pregnancy and successful childbirth, and sickness used to take a LOT of kids, so fertile women were actually really in dire need). Later religions that we're more familiar with started seeing the Earth ITSELF as a being, most seeing it as female. The Greeks, naturally, called the Earth "Gaea", and said she mated with the Sky (Uranus) to form the original rulers of the world, The Titans. Gaea grew hateful when her husband imprisoned their children (The Hundred-Handed Giants and the Cyclopses) within Tartarus, and so had their son Kronus kill him. But when Kronus did the same thing, she allowed for his son Zeus to depose HIM. Even later, she grew displeased with the Olympians and sent an army of GIANTS after them (Giants, of course, birthed by herself), but this time, the plan failed, and the Giants were defeated.

-"Geb" in Egyptian mythology is among the rare MALE "Earth Gods", as typically, the Sky fertilizes the Earth (ie. rain on the plains), which really goes deeply into "Gods as Metaphor".

Gaea- The Ultimate MILF:
-Gaea is the Earth Mother of various mythologies, and given much props in Marvel (she's the mother of Thor as well), despite not showing up very often- she'll pop up here and there, but usually isn't the instigator of a plot. She takes her name from the Greek variation of the concept, right down to the human-like appearance and motherly, caring nature.

-Her origin is that she's an Elder God, birthed alongside Chthon, Set, and others when the Demiurge spread his essence over the Earth. Among the few GOOD Elder Gods, Gaea watched over the growing early humans, protecting them from her evil brothers and sisters, who had begun eating each other, transforming into Demons. Horrified by the evil of Set in particular, Gaea summoned the Demiurge and "mated" with it, giving birth to the Sun God "Atum", who became the Demogorge- the God-Eater. And of course he set out to prove his name, consuming many of the Elder Gods, and sending the rest into various dimensions, lest they be eaten themselves. And this is the origin of why beings like Chthon, Set and others hide away in other realms- as soon as they're seen on Earth, out comes the Demogorge- the one being they fear.

-Millions of years later, Gaea allowed the dinosaurs to become extinct, and banished Set when he grew enraged from this. When other Gods began to appear on Earth, Gaea allowed many of them to mate with her (NICE), giving birth to beings such as Thor, when she lay with Odin in the guise of "Jord". When the Celestials first appeared on Earth, and the Skyfathers all prepared to fight them in a Manly Cosmic Battle, Gaea gathered all of the female Goddesses and (and I swear this was written in the 1970s, not current Marvel's political climate!) forged the plan to create the Young Gods- the best and brightest of humanity, proving mankind's worth to the Space Gods.

Gaea In Modern Times:
-In Gaea's first in-continuity appearance, she is captured by Dormammu, and freed by Doctor Strange and Clea. Later, she finally succeeded in impressing the Celestials with the Young Gods, sparing Earth. She then told Thor the secret of how to revive the dead Asgardians- by taking a bit of energy from each of the Earth's other pantheons. She is later seen giving power to the evil Yandroth, but is convinced not to by The Defenders. Her most recent in-continuity appearance include spending her last hours with her children during the "Chaos War" (as Amatsu-Mikaboshi lays waste to the universe, killing all the Gods). However, she is the key to victory- empowering Hercules to become the "God of Gods", which lets him defeat Mikaboshi. Most-recently, she has appeared in Thor as the triumvirate "All-Mother", alongside Frigga (as Freyja) and Idunn.

Gaea's MILFy Might:
-Gaea, the ultimate MILF (seriously- she's HUGE, a literal mother, ENORMOUS, chesty, motherly, GIGANTIC, and even better- COLOSSAL!), basically has tons and tons of Alt-Effects based around Elemental Control, making her essentially an Uber-version of Storm, Magma & Thor, in addition to possessing Healing powers beyond anyone else on Earth's.

Notable Aliases: A'akuluujjusi (Inuit), Aditi (Hindi), Akka (Finnish), Ala (Yoruba), Ale (Vodu), Ammavaru (Vedic), Armaiti (Zoroastrian), Asase Ya, Cihuacoatl (Aztec), Citlalicue (Olmec), Coatlique (Aztec), Danu (Celtic), Dilga (Aboriginal), Eje, Eithinoha (Iroquois), Erce (Russian), Great Mother, Hou-Tou (Chinese), Ilmatar (Finnish), Izanami (Japanese), Jorde (Norse), Ki (Mesopotamian), Mother Earth & Mother Nature, Nana (Dahomey), Nana Buluku, Neith (Egyptian), Nertha (German), Ninhursag (Sumerian), Nokomis (Algonquin), Nungeena (Aboriginal), Otuken, Pachamama (Incan), Papa (Hawai'i), Papaptauanuku (Oceanic), Prakriti (Brahmanic), Umay, Vaat (Siberrian/Mongolian), Yer, Yin (Chinese), Rangi (Oceanic)

Yeah Lilith was one that I always enjoyed because Christianity so badly demonized her as the original feminist, turning her into a child eating psycho etc etc, when her biggest crime is that she was created and when given the choice, chose to walk and be free.

I also love the follow up which I use in In nomine campaigns I run which is that Eve was made from Adams rib not to make her subservient or meek but to give the two an honest connection to each other, each having a part of the other in themselves. which is why Eve chose to stay.

The Young Gods

THE YOUNG GODS
Created By:
Gerry Conway & John Buscema
First Appearance: Thor #203 (Sept. 1972)
Role: Forgotten Characters

-These folks were created by Gerry Conway to pay off part of the "Celestial" plotline in The Eternals. With the inevitable return of a Host of Celestials to judge humanity, the male Godheads of the Pantheons of Earth decided to FIGHT the Space Gods... but Gaea and the female Gods were all "uh, no, that's a retarded idea" and instead went with a more peaceful method- they gathered youths from across the world to showcase humanity's strengths to the Celestials, turning them into Gods in the process. Naturally, their plan worked (The Celestials at this point were given so much credibility that ONE could have defeated any given Pantheon in about a single round of combat), and the Young Gods went off with The Celestials. Gerry Conway came up with the idea, but Mark Gruenwald & Ralph Macchio utilized them almost one-hundred issues after their debut, adding more members to the team (which was initially a trio- Bright Sword, Harvest & Genii). They appeared from time to time (often several years after the last appearance), but didn't get up to much.

-However, the Young Gods grew tired of The Celestials never saying anything, and so they ran off to Earth with some insane idea to turn all of humanity into a new Celestial. When The Eternals stopped them, a sudden bolt from out of nowhere dropped the Young Gods dead. Um... WHAT? THAT was the pay-off to that storyline? Okay, so actually looking at things, it turns out that was Fred Van Lente writing a cap-off to an ages-old storyline circa 2009, and the characters had last appeared fifteen years earlier.

-It's kind of sad, because The Young Gods is actually a really good idea- proof of humanity's worth by its best and brightest representatives. Also, the fact that they gathered kids up from across the planet means that we have a multi-racial team without things seeming cheesy and cloying- it's a natural part of the story that these kids come from everywhere! Alas, most of them are pretty boring-looking, and it seems only their creator, Gerry Conway, ever had any intention of using them. They got some play in a few of Conway's Spider-Man books, and he used them again in Marvel Comics Presents, but that was all. Largely they appeared as a big group, meaning they were often just backgrounders, even in stories FOCUSING on them.

-Statting the kids is effectively impossible, as they were a mass collection of schemers, but each was said to have great power.

BRIGHT SWORD (Carter Dyam): A young Israeli soldier, and part of the original trio. Super-Strength, Durability and an Energy Sword.
CADUCEUS (Mark Cadmon): A physician from 1919 who can Heal others with a touch, or drive out demons. He can also sap the strength of others.
CALCULUS (Jahaharel Patel): An Indian scientist from the '20s. Telepathy, Telekinesis, Levitation, Teleportation & Invisibility. Appears in a Spectacular Spider-Man arc to manipulate events so Spidey, The Outlaws and The Avengers team up to stop some parasitic nano-insects from destroying the world.
DAYDREAMER (Catherine Moranis): Canadian farmgirl from the 1800s. Telepathy, Construct Generation, Limited Precognition & Mind Control.
GENII (Jason Kimball): A fashion designer and part of the original trio. Life Force Transfering powers, allowing him to bring objects to life.
HARVEST (Chi Lo): A Chinese girl, and part of the original trio. Plant Manipulation.
HIGHNOTE (Raoul Hernandez): Colombian saloon dancer & musician from the 1800s. "Songs" that shoot Blasts, activate Mass Teleportation & Telekinesis.
MINDSINGER (Gregor Buhkarov): Russian guy from the 1700s. Transubstantiation (ie. he turns into stuff, sorta like what Mr. Fantastic does) & Telepathy.
MOONSTALKER (Kiana): Inupiat woman from 11th Century Alaska. Super-Speed.
SEA WITCH (Bridget O'Hare): An Irishwoman from the 12 Century. Hydrokinesis & Aquatic Adaptations.
SPLICE (Chandra Ku): A 13-year old Zulu girl from the 1700s. Matter Manipulation powers.
VARUA (Mira): Polynesian girl from the 1400s. Telepathy (lotta that on this squad), Blue Flame generation, Teleportation & Flight.

Complications:
Motivation (Eating Gods)- The Demogorge's role in the Universe is to consume and destroy Gods when their time is up. This is a necessary role, but often makes him absurdly hungry and morbid.
Weakness (Too Many Gods)- Demogorge can get TOO full- when he tried to eat Sl'gur't of the Skrull Pantheon, who had subsumed and ruled over countless other races' Gods, he violently erupted from "Too many Godheads".
Phobia (Eternity)- The Eater of All Things fears the embodiment of All That Is.
Weakness (Internal Attacks)- Thor was once able to make him barf by attacking him whilst being trapped inside his body, where his flesh was less Impervious- it's only been tried once, but if doing the "Absorb" attack and the God is able to recover, he can be struck from within, removing Impervious and probably some ranks of Toughness.

Total: Abilities: 156 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 29 / Powers: 244 / Defenses: 19 (472)

-When the Demiurge seeded the Earth with life, it eventually spawned The Elder Gods, chief among them Gaea. The other Elders (Set, Chthon and others) became Demon Lords, and turned all evil and stuff, and so Gaea & the Demiurge got together and produced Atum, who began absorbing the life forces of the Demons and evolving into the titanic Demogorge- The God-Eater. Thus, only Chthon & Set survived, and the others were all slain. Demogorge has lived since then as a Bogeyman of sorts to the Gods, threatening to eat all of the other Pantheons. When the Gods of the various Hells got together to merge their dimensions together into a Super-Hell, it awoke the God-Eater, who... ate the Gods. Pluto, Hela, etc. all fell before his might, and then he fought Thor and an assortment of Gods sent to stop him. Thor manages to get himself absorbed, at he does enough internal damage to cause the Demogorge to spit up the Gods he'd consumed.

-The Demogorge was killed in the Secret Invasion storyline after biting off more than he could chew (literally, in this case) with a Multi-God female Skrull Goddess. He is later seen alive when Thor is killed fighting Cul (The Serpent), and travels to the afterlife for the Gods- he can apparently never truly be slain. Thor manages to escape him yet again, doing the "internal damage" trick one more time.

-The Demogorge is as powerful as any Elder God alive, if not moreso- PL 19 is enough to beat Odin, Ymir or Surtur, and that's WITHOUT the Immunity to many of their attacks. He Regenerates, Weakens All Abilities by "Eating" them. He's SO powerful that his comparatively-weak appearance in "Secret Invasion" (where he only died due to a Complication, but still had trouble when a bunch of other Gods attacked) seems like an abnormality- this guy chased SET and CHTHON into other Dimensions where they hide to this day, and once owned every Death God at once- he's no sissy. Hell, his origin story contains Chthon & Set combining their powers against him while he just stands there. With his frightful Weaken power, he could probably take anyone in comics on in an even fight- Cyttorak, The Vishanti, The Celestials, even possibly Galactus himself.

Has Galactus ever dealt with any of the major gods? Besides Thor and Hercules?

I can picture it now... the Big G flying through space, devouring worlds... and the space gods doing.. nothing?
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

Galactus and Odin fought using just their psychic abilities, apparently because a physical fight between them could 'destroy the universe', Odin knocked Galactus unconscious and then passed out himself.

Instances such as this make Odin's recent poor showings seem even more stupid.

Holy shit- the Earth is HOT.
Nice Gaia build, but I don't think you have enough pictures. ;) I remember some of those pics. Judging by the pics she should have a really high toughness. Though maybe that was just a good showing. I know Withstand Damage will help.

Quick side note here, other than Gaea (yes she is technically a elder god as well), one other elder god does remain; the goddess Oshtur. She left earth to explore before the corruption of the other elder gods, and managed to remain untainted eventually going on to create the Vishanti (of Doctor Strange fame) with the last member of an alien pantheon, Hoggoth and her son, Agamotto.
