Heh- clever. Usually Japanese games just throw in random words in English, so to actually get a non-English translation of something is pretty different.

True, but if this crew had made Golden Axe the dwarf would be named Beardhalt Guerrero or something XD

But yeah, these designs are super generic. Even the other obscure SNK fighters like Savage Reign/Kizuna Encounter had more interesting designs:

Which reminds me, at one point SNK got the rights to that old super-blatant SF2 ripoff that was even sued by Capcom for being such, Fighter's History., from the company that owned it, Data East.

-A Canadian pro wrestler wearing a SPECTACULARLY simple outfit (it's just... torn jeans...), Sheen Genus was kicked out of most organizations for knocking out his foes, and now seeks to form his own league, with the best fighters he can find. In his own ending, he recruits Leonhalt. Statistically, he and Leonhalt are pretty much the same guy, as they're equally-large, muscular grappler-types, though Sheen uses pro wrestling-style moves like a Running Lariat and a Bulldog Headlock.

Savage Reign was a big staple of my childhood. I remember it for having some really over the top designs. I think it's a telltale when one of the most normal looking character is Russian lab-grown supersoldier child with a shield.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 9 (97)

-Kisarah was a pretty generic character- a Japanese schoolgirl- but actually predates Sakura by quite a ways, and is the only cast member of this game to see another appearance- she shows up in Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum, which also brought back Mudman from World Heroes, and other obscure Neo-Geo game characters. There, she added moves that involved using her backpack as a weapon. The game uses her as a flirtacious fighter who manipulates men into doing what she wants. She's PL 7.5, by virtue of her appearance in another game.

I think I mentioned this before, but a friend of mine once ran a game using the old Street Fighter RPG (with a bunch of house rules to make it more KoF-like) which was in some ways Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum...before that ga,e game actually existed, as he included in the campaign characters like Hayate, King Leo, people from Metal Slug and so on.

Undergrads

Haha, oh this is weird. For those about to wonder why in the hell I'm about to put up *2e* builds, I recently just found these while searching for something else. I know I'd started this set, but I got bored at some point (doing TV-related builds, even ones for shows I like, is always a bit of a slog), and didn't finish them. But I figured it'd be a fun random thing to put out there. I should do a more elaborate review later on, as I haven't seen this show since probably 2013 or so.

-Here's a little something to fit between larger Build series- Undergrads builds! For those among you who are going "What the blue hell is Undergrads, let me explain: Circa 2000 or so, MTV actually wanted to start up an animation studio to renew the success they had years earlier with Beavis & Butt-Head and Daria. One of the shows chosen (alongside Mission Hill I think, plus that Downtown show about New York twentysomethings) was Undergrads, mostly written and voiced by a single guy, Pete Williams, who based the main characters around himself and his group of friends.

To me, this show represented the early years of Post-Secondary Education better than almost any show I'd ever seen. The characters were technically adults, but totally immature and unused to the "real world", and so formed little cliques with weird habits. Most everyone partied or just "hung out", never really DOING anything (as that requires money). Some lived in Residences led by typically-overeager RAs. People around them got nicknames ("Hey, it's Room Guy, because he never leaves his room!"). NOBODY went to class. It was just this odd... post-HIGH SCHOOL thing that was pervading the entire series, and it nearly exactly fit my own experiences. While each episode was it's own comedic set-piece (the "Exposed Expo" nude run of freshmen at the beginning of school, the all-nighter game of Risk, etc.), there were several over-arching themes, key among them was Nitz growing as a person while trying to get with the High School "Girl of His Dreams", Kimmy Burton, while subsequently ignoring his friends, both old (the 4-man lifelong crew of buddies) and new (cool girl Jessie), and what happens when people finally hook up and stuff.

Sadly, it only got a 12-episode run (like MANY MTV animated shows), but nearly every one was good, which is always unique. It ended on kind of a cliffhanger (SPOILER ALERT-- Nitz hooks up with Kimmy after a night of comforting her during Finals, but then Jessie reveals to Nitz that she has feelings for him, raging against him assuming that he's now in a relationship with Kimmy... really complicated true-to-life stuff), which kinda sucked. But seriously, I totally recommend it, especially for anyone going to or about to go to college, or anyone who ever went.

Nitz

Post by Jabroniville »

Haha, these builds are so old they're not even formatted.

NITZ
PL 0 (8)
ST 10 DEX 10 CON 10 INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 10

Skills:
Bluff 4 (+4)
Computers 2 (+2)
Diplomacy 3 (+3)
Knowledge (Pop Culture) 8 (+8)

Feats:
None

Saves:
Toughness +0, Fortitude +1, Reflex +1, Will +2

Combat:
Attack +0, Damage +0, Defense +0, Initiative +0

Complications:
Responsibility (In Love with Kimmy Burton)
Reputation (Ditz Who Bails On His Friends for Kimmy Burton)

Abilities: 0 / Skills: 16--4 / Feats: 0 / Powers: 0 / Saves: 4 / Combat: 0 (8)

-Nitz is the main character of the show, and about as unassuming and average as you could possibly get. Not too handsome, not too charismatic, and generally pretty uneventful (he rarely parties or does stuff with others like go to the prom- promising than 'next year' he will, when there's actually cool stuff to do), Nitz becomes a weirdo the second Kimmy Burton gets involved in his life. He pretty much freaks out over how crazy he is about her, ignoring all of his friends, and goes out of his way for her, despite her generally treating him like just some guy she knows. This little foible makes Nitz the perfect main character, as his everyman nature stands out while he gets to be weird SOMETIMES (he usually only freaks out and screams when Kimmy is involved), and he generally just gets to play off of all the other weirdos. Not much in the way of statting (though his Pop Cultural knowledge is second to none, as he & Gimpy effortlessly destroyed all competition in the school's competition about the same) because he's so simple and down-to-earth, though.

Oh yeah, Fighter's History is on the list, if only for curiosity's sake. I never played it, but their Ryu & Sagat guys were pretty on the nose, if I remember right.

Complications:
Responsibility (Loves the Ladies)

Abilities: -4 / Skills: 00--0 / Feats: 2 / Powers: 0 / Saves: 3 / Combat: 0 (1)

-Cal is just a weird concept for a character (though based off one of the creator's best friends). Basically a Kavorka Man who gets the girls despite being bizarre all over (he's not particularly fit or good-looking in the art style, he slurs his words, is functionally retarded and calls everyone "Guy"- even the girls!), he's seen with three female followers during the entire school year. An old buddy of the main gang, he gets mercilessly picked on by Rocko, and is the source of much of Nitz's anger in the school year (they're roomates in Residence, and Cal frequently breaks things, makes messes, and has girls over). As such, he's one of those guys who stats up with virtually no skills at all, showing up just barely over the PL 0 Bystander statline.

ROCKO

Addiction (Pornography)
Responsibility (Member of Alpha Alpha)

Abilities: -2 / Skills: 8--2 / Feats: 1 / Powers: 0 / Saves: 1 / Combat: 0 (2)

-Rocko fits in oddly with his buddies- since all three of the others are dorks of some kind, Rocko sticks out because he's a loser drunk. A party-hound who's obsessed with living out every college-age stereotype imaginable (porn strewn all over his room, sex jokes at all times- "Hey, it looks like I'm whackin' off!" to a karate-chopping hand in an FPS game, constant alcoholism, etc.), Rocko just ends up being off-putting to everyone around him, as his Alpha Alpha dorm-mates hate him, he gets no respect at Community College, and even his friends make fun of him (upon reminiscing about how he dumped his last- attractive, mind you- girlfriend when he was off to college just so he could score all the time, Gimpy jokes "What an idiot! He'll never have sex again!"). Violent and bull-headed, he frequently beats up Cal for annoying him. He pretty much defines the last guy you'd want as a roomate in college, though he can be pretty loyal to his friends. Still, I wonder how he ended up being friends with the other three in the first place- I guess it's just one of those things- when old friends grow up together, some can split off in weird ways.

God I hate that guy. Worse is that I knew somebody kind of like that. No redeemable traits, but always seemed to have women hanging off of him.

Heh- it's the damndest thing. My own friend, the same one as the "Cartman-like rewriting history" guy, had a lot of luck with women, even though he was so scrawny as to be gaunt, and a big whiner, too. Turns out, A) women don't care about muscle mass as much as most guys think they do, and B) some guys are VERY GOOD at playing up sympathy with the "Woe is ME!" stuff. He had GREAT short-term success with women, especially if they had low self-esteem. But most women with backbone eventually dropped him.

Of course, he's now on Facebook white-knighting and acting like he's SUPER pro-women's rights, deriding men who take women for granted or treat them like prizes. I guarantee you he's responsible for a dozen MeToos, all of which he'd deny completely, or rewrite in his head so his advances were "wanted". Actual quote: "I didn't really want to have sex with her, but I decided to push to see if I could get it anyways".
