-Fang's costume is so cool they could use it tomorrow for another "Claw Guy" concept and nobody would bat an eyelash. Hell, Wolverine himself sported it for a while just because! Poor Fang here's been killed at least once, and drew the unlucky-as-hell role as "Poor Man's Wolverine", which is kind of funny, considering he's based off of the guy whom Logan ripped the appearance from in the first place. So Fang gets to job. A LOT. Apparenly his whole race looks like this, because when he died, another one showed up in the next story as background filler. He's a fairly tough little Scrapper, having animalistic senses, claws and physical capabilities, but is a little light on well-roundedness, like most Guardsmen. He's pretty much a tracker who flies into melee, slashing away.

-Flashfire (formerly Tempest, changed to avoid confusion with DC's former Aqualad) looks pretty cool, though like most of the Guard is VERY "Seventies" in design, especially that big lightning bolt and his Adam Warlock/Teen Idol hair. Statting out as a generic Electric Guy, with few feats or side powers aside from his Dazzle Visuals effect, he's not even immune/resistant to electricity! Kind of sad, considering he's a riff on Lightning Lad, one of the most IMPORTANT members of the old Legion. He was also apparently married to teammate Oracle, but it got dropped later, and they're both insignificant side characters, so it was likely just forgotten. Unlike most of the Imperial Guard, who at best only SOMETIMES are shown flying, Flashfire does it on a fairly regular basis.

-Heh, Glom is pretty funny. Taking the Legion's dumbest member (Matter-Eater Lad), and making a simply CRAZY pink mouth with legs as a member of the Guard out of the deal is a pretty smart move, and Mark Gruenwald used him a bit in his "Quasar" run. He vanished after that, though, becoming one of those 'forgotten' Imperial Guardsmen (anyone created after the debut of the team has pretty much been forgotten by the next writer, since no one keeps track of that sort of thing at Marvel). Glom seemed kind of goofy and silly, but had a dangerous side- he could EAT Quasar's Quantum Constructs, and actually BIT SOMEONE IN HALF (Dr. Minerva, a Kree Captain Marvel-dressed super-powered woman) during a What If? story arc. So he's a bit of a dunderheaded laughing matter (his team often had to yell at him to stop eating things important to the mission), but he can be VERY dangerous if necessary. He uses the simple Damage & Weaken Power in addition to the super-bite as a general melee attack if he just needs to flat-out kill somebody.

Complications:
Responsibility (The Shi'ar Imperial Guard)
Responsibility (Duty)- Gladiator is so obsessed with duty that he willingly murdered nearly his entire race on the orders of the Emperor. He will immediately follow every single order the Emperors make, no matter how crazy they are.
Relationship (Lilandra)- Gladiator eventually fell in love with the Majestrix, and one of his only instances of disobeying the Emperor came when she was threatened. He even blew up Smasher's head because of it.
Power Loss (All Powers)- Strontians will lose all power if their convictions or confidence fails. Gladiator once had his ass whupped by Cannonball because of this.
Weakness (Rare Radiation Type)

Total: Abilities: 110 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 102 / Defenses: 14 (269)

-Gladiator is obviously the most famous and powerful of the Imperial Guard. Basically an homage of Superman, he's Marvel's most famous Supermanalogue, having been given nearly all of his powers. He's been characterized as a flawed Yes-Man, basically following whatever the Emperor demanded (even if it meant the extermination of his own, powerful race), whether they were crazy, inbred, or what have you. This is kinda the flaw with Marvel's Space Scene, as nearly every empire is ruled by monarchs who tend to go nuts, which Earth's own history has proven is the least effective form of government. In any case, his power level has made Gladiator famous, especially as fans got more and more "Power-focused" over time, demanding bigger & better feats from guys. Funny, in that Marvel used to PRIDE ITSELF on having a universe of more down-to-earth, less-powerful heroes more often than not (Spidey, the FF, most Avengers), and yet now seems to have a higher power-balance than DC does.

-Gladiator's been thrown in as the "major opponent" of a lot of powerful heroes because of his aura of respect, especially for Thor, who's defeated him a couple times so far (Odinson once, Masterson once). Even so, he's badass enough that nearly every encounter featuring him has at least one "Holy Crap!" moment, with the heroes basing their entire strategy off of defeating the Strontian powerhouse.

-Gladiator stats up like alot of my Supermanalogues, but costs much more than most of them, given his Life Support, frequently-shown Super Speed and ultra-powerful Blast (capable of decapitating teammate Smasher with ease). You could call him anywhere from PL 13 to PL 15, but I went with PL 15 with a few limitations (PL 14.5 melee, PL 13-13.5 defensively), mainly because he's lost to Thor a few times when the big guy fully let loose, and I've rendered Thor as a PL 14. Gladiator is just a smidge beyond him so Thor can still tangle, but has to pull out all the stops to do it. This makes him more powerful than any single hero short of the Silver Surfer.

-His "Loses Confidence" weakness comes up from time to time (it NEVER happens when facing opponents of great might, but guys like Gambit and Cannonball have knocked him on his ass because of it), so it's there as an uncommon thing. To set it off, you basically have to do something REALLY unlikely (like take his mightiest blow), or just get a telepath to directly screw with him. Neither is particularly easy.

-Hardball's just a gag character, an obvious riff on the Legion's Bouncing Boy to fit the old Legionnaire running theme of the Imperial Guard. He was so unoriginal he was just a big green guy with no detail on him, and he was just in the background of a few scenes during "Operation: Galactic Storm", after which we never saw him again. No big loss. He stats up pretty much like a Skill-less Bouncing Boy (copying some crap from my Speedball build, naturally, a weak PL 8 who's among the worst of his entire team.

-Hobgoblin ain't exactly an original knock-off, like many Guardsmen are. He basically is a purple Chameleon Boy- a pallette swap, like Impulse. That said, he's one of the most useful and recurring Guardsmen, showing up all over the place and generally taking out at least one superhero because of his disguise powers. He can transform into some pretty big-ass monsters, but he's still only PL 10, and has a few less tricks than his Legion version. He was alleged to have died by another member of his race in a Fantastic Four issue, and another was killed during War of Kings. Also, why the hell would a SPACEFARING SUPERHERO be named after an Earth mythical creature.

-Hussar (named for Hungarian light cavalry... for some reason) has no real LOSH link, but is one of the more-recurring Imperial Guardsmen (even showing up in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance!) because of her odd red-skinned, hoofed appearance. She briefly joined that offshoot of the Guard that acted as renegades on Earth, but soon reappeared with her original team, probably because the next writer forgot. I depicted her as one of the more skilled Guardsmen, packing a pretty useful PL 10 quality weapon. I wasn't quite sure if the Stun was HER power or her whip's, and the thing gets broken an AWFUL lot for a Device, but I ultimately went with a Device anyways, limited to her or others immune to the Stunning qualities of the weapon. It's quite powerful and has a good range, but she's still ultimately quite vulnerable, often going down in team battles because she's focused on a single opponent and gets nailed by someone else.

Not the most SUBTLE of homages, but Clayton Henry's a good enough artist to make it work.

-Impulse (yet another name that later got used later for other characters- by DC once and then Marvel AGAIN) is a one-note rip-off of the Legion's Wildfire, and shows it all over in his design. Some homages are more subtle (sharing only powers, or power themes), and others are like this guy, who's basically a pallette swap of the original. He even has the "Disperses if his suit is ruptured" Drawback (at one point, Quasar has to save him with his Life Support Bubble because his energy form apparently needs to breathe). He's a PL 10 variant of Wildfire, as Impulse has certainly shown no kind of super-strength or super-durability before. He seems like a pretty generic (but highly powerful, as he could crack Quasar's shields and match Cyclops in Optic Blast power) Blaster who can fly and just happens to be an energy being. He even blew off one of Gorgon's legs with a single shot!

Magique

They seriously wasted a character design this elaborate and unique on a bottom-tier character on a 20-man squad?

-Magique (formerly Magic), like Princess Projectra (on whom she's based), is a team player first and foremost (as well as an obvious icon of the '70s), using her non-combat abilities to their maximum, helping her teammates out by creating false impressions, making them invisible, etc. She's also ensorcerelled people with Glamours before, but they've proven partially ineffective. Deep-down, she's just a fragile Mage archetype, but with far fewer base abilities in the Array than most Mages ever get (that'll happen when you have one appearance every four years). She even got KILLED after her tracking "Witch Mark" got placed onto herself.

Re: Jab's Builds! (Hsien-Ko! Anakaris! Jedah! Archer Builds!)

I just got back from Disney's Moana. A great little film, with like a LASER FOCUS on the main plot- there's all of eight speaking roles in the thing, and 95% of the focus is on the title character.

* Great character designs. I love Moana's look- she actually LOOKS 16, and not like the adult women that usually populate the Princesses (she's supposed to be only a year younger than BELLE and two younger than Cinderella, both of whom look like adult women). She's got a wide face, broad nose, and arms & legs that are THICK- this girl works out! And I LOVE her hair- so many styles and forms- filled with sand, soaking wet, frizzy, up in a bun, etc.

* Of course she appears as a baby. Gotta sell that "Character as a Baby" merch. Expect this in EVERY Disney movie now, by the way. Exposition AND Merch Sales- these guys know their shit when it comes to the $$$.

* No love interest! The movie gets a lot of credit for this in the reviews, because dying alone = Feminism, I guess :).

* The villain's visually impressive, but doesn't actually say anything, meaning it lacks "something" as a classic Disney Villain. Our closest version of that is the Evil Crustacean, who gets a pretty decent Villain Song that nonetheless feels a weird combination of "too short" and "not quite catchy enough". They were going for Bowie-style audaciousness and just ALMOST made it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQzAi-a9Bv8

* The songs are serviceable and good, but not quite the EPICS that we know Disney for. No one should have been expecting another Let It Go, but the Murderer's Row of talented assembled (including Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda, the current Most-Respected Pop Culture Guy) would have been expected to do a bit bigger & Better. Though given that Miranda had JUST completed a 2-CD Masterpiece more or less with himself on lyrics and a few other guys for help, it's possible he shot everything out of his cannon already for the next long while. Moana's Signature Track, for example, is basically as good as For The First Time In Forever- GOOD... but nobody would have cared about Frozen as much if For The First Time In Forever was the Signature Song. It's as generic an "I Want" song as you're ever gonna get. It was like a TEXTBOOK on how to write an "I Want" song. And You're Welcome is CLASSIC Miranda- you can hear him all over this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyv0ZlW0yS0

* The Merch-tastic Pig & Tiny Coconut Pirates of course get almost no screen-time whatsoever. Like, the TROLLS in Frozen were a bigger part of the plot. The Pig is only there for a tiny bit and never does anything. The CHICKEN of all things gets the bulk of the "Sidekickery".

* The two leads do pretty good work- Duane Johnson sounds... well, pretty much like they just hired him to do his own act (complete with raised eyebrows on the animated character), like a lot of "Ink-Suit Actor" type hires. Moana's VA (a total unknown) did a really good job in parts, especially the Big Argument on the boat.

* There's two big laughs in the thing- the Chicken gets one, and Maui gets the other. You'll see it.

* The only thing I REALLY think the film is missing was a big "Wow" moment. They get CLOSE, with the Manta Ray scene and the part with the Ship Visions, but there's nothing on the level of "Elsa Making her Ice Castle and Accepting Herself" or "the Animal Spirits take the mother Bear's spirit and change her killer's form" or "Mulan fails and is thrown out of the army, thus sparing her father's life and completing her first goal... but instead turns back and proves herself, becoming the best soldier in the army while Donnie Osmond sings the most glorious song of all time". I feel like it was RIGHT on the cusp, but never quite pulled it off.
Builds will, naturally, be forthcoming, but only in a month or so. I don't like to stat up movies IMMEDIATELY... unless it's Frozen.

I'm listening to Shiny now, not sure if they were going for Bowie or Frakenfurter. Also, strongly joining in the War of Loud- way too much competing for the same audio space, trying to pick up the difference between the vocals and instrumentals.

Then again, I may be getting ancient. I need to get a pimp d20 headed cane.

YouTube went into 'I am Moana', much stronger Bowie styled and 'hearable'... and then Felicia Day started singing???

Folks that are new to the Jab channel, welcome! :)

It's also not necessary to quote entire builds in order to make mention of them.

It would have been fine on the old forum, but the new one has 15-post pages, so quoting a whole build makes for an extra-long (hee hee) page. Which... really shouldn't be an issue, I guess, but I'm weird. And so is Spectrum, apparently :).

Oh yeah, re: Archer builds. Has anyone seen Moonbeam City, aka Archer if it had a much worse cast and less funny jokes, and also '80s-looking stuff? Because WOW was that ever an unoriginal idea. I liked the art style, but the main cop couldn't have been more like Sterling Archer if he tried.
