In thread-related news, the next Overwatch hero was announced. That feels like it was pretty fast, but then it feels like time moves really fast sometimes. Also, Ken was announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Relationship (King Fergus)- Elinor loves her husband, and actually seems able to put up with him, but often has to pull his ear or give a stern lecture anyways.
Involuntary Transformation (Bear)- Elinor is being transformed into a bear permanently by a Magic Spell, and may only occasionally retain her human mind. This may cause her to attack her daughter and other loved ones. It will also reduce her Mental Abilities to Bear levels (Int -4, Awareness 1, Presence -2). However, retaining her human mentality often reduces her Fighting to 3 and removes her Combat Advantages.

Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 13 / Defenses: 10 (87)

-Queen Elinor's Black Bear form is HUGE, though, looking much larger than even a Brown Bear, but she still ends up at PL 9 overall (nothing to sneeze at). She only gains full capabilities once the Bear part takes over

-Queen Elinor is the secondary protagonist of the film, and her position on duty and proper behavior drives a lot of the conflict, as Merida's rebellion strives against such things. Elinor did her duty and got married (and appears to love her loutish husband), and is horrified and beyond furious at Merida's refusal to do the same. Watching Merida embarrass the family in public is just too much ALREADY, and then Merida tears the family's special portrait.

-Elinor as a human is much less impressive (though pulls the MILF thing off nicely; rowr), but can still drag her husband and three other Scottish Kings across a room with some concentrated effort. She has some good persuasive ability, something that Merida develops by movie's end, when she gets all the clans to get along with a rousing speech.

About the Performer: Emma Thompson is one of the most respected actresses of her generation, and will probably be getting the Judi Dench/Helen Mirren roles when those two finally kick the bucket. She did a lot of low-key stuff in the 1980s, but earned cred on the stage, doing Shakespeare and other works. Forming a relationship with Kenneth Branagh, she starred in a LOT of his productions. She got noticed in the States for Howard's End (which I don't think I've ever heard of). Sense and Sensability became a big hit, too, making her highly sought-after, though she resisted the call of Hollywood for the most part (Love Actually is her other major hit). She was Sybil in the Harry Potter franchise, and was in the Nanny McPhee series as well. Elinor wasn't her first Disney role- she played Captain Amelia in the bomb Treasure Planet! Nor was it her last- she played Mrs. Potts in the live-action Beauty and the Beast AND P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks!

Initiative +1

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +5, Fortitude +6, Will +5

Complications:
Relationship (Mérida )- Mérida is the apple of her father's eye- gaining his red hair and his fighter's spirit. He would be just fine with her doing whatever she pleased.
Relationship (Queen Elinor)- Elinor is the enforcer, and Fergus is beholden to her will. He'll still fancy an ass-grab or two, though.
Enemy (Mor'du)- Mor'du attacked his family a decade ago, and took Fergus' leg in the process.
Prejudice (Bears)- A Bad-Ass, Scottish Stephen Colbert, Fergus will slay any bears he comes across, thanks to his hatred of Mor'du.
Disabled (One-Legged)- One of Fergus' legs went down the gullet of Mor'du. Anyone making an aimed attack on the wooden leg may disable his movement & fighting entirely.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 12 (85)

-Fergus is the show-stopper of Brave, stealing every scene with his hilarious appearance, braying Scottish wit, and wild fighting. I love his imitation of Mérida , and how he basically just lets Elinor enforce everything, while he'd rather just throw punches and eat everything in front of him. He's as high in power as Mérida , and has some Toughness-related feats- he had his leg eaten BY A BEAR, and survived to tell the tale (and he even LIKES telling the story).

About the Performer: Jumpin' Jesus, did this guy write his own Wikipedia page or something? This is like "X-23" long. Connolly's a Scottish comedian going WAY back, dropping a prospective folk-singing career and doing high-speed, ribald comedy. He apparently became a household name almost overnight, telling a joke on a major TV program about a man killing his wife, burying her face down "so he'd have a place to park his bike"- people apparently STILL refer to that joke this very day. Success in America eluded him thanks to an accent most found incomprehensible, but he's been popular in the UK for decades. He actually became a successful character actor, too, appearing in various productions.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Bears cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Motivation (Destruction)- Cursed with a bear form after slaying his three brothers for power, Mor'du can now only haunt Scotland, destroying anything in his path. Nothing remains of his original personality.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 37 / Defenses: 16 (109)

-Mor'du is the Scary-As-Balls villain of Brave, but is set apart from most Disney villains in that he's not a Large Ham, doesn't get a Villain Song, and doesn't even have ANY DIALOGUE. He's a former King of Scotland, who gained great power from a Witch's potion (the same one Merida used), but used it to kill his brothers and take total power (their father had split the Kingdom amongst all four worthy sons- Mor'du was the most powerful one, but the others had great mental abilities that he lacked). But for the movie, he's basically the Bogeyman, and shows up in the initial moments, then begins hunting Merida & Bear-Elinor. He was ultimately pretty scary (I'd imagine children would be TERRIFIED of him, especially because he didn't speak, and was instead just an engine of destruction), but he pales before Marvel's Demon Bear that threatened The New Mutants in the '80s.

-Mor'du is EXTREMELY tough compared to any other Brave character, and effortlessly held off a large group of men, requiring a huge piece of stone debris to end things. At PL 10 and packing Regeneration and Impervious Toughness, he has little to fear from a group where only two people make PL 7 (Merida & Fergus), and even then aren't really maximized. Even Elinor can really only hold him back. In one of the movie's neater moments, his spirit comes out of the stone and nods to Merida in thanks.

About the Performer: "Have you seen a cartoon? Oh, Frank's in it." goes the joke. The man with the largest IMDB page in history, Frank Welker is THE GUY when it comes to playing animals, with a talent so legendary that it's hard to separate fact from fiction. The Simpsons DVD sets contain commentaries where the writers boast of his ability to do a flock of geese in ONE TAKE or a dog and a cat fighting simultaneously. When performing with ACTUAL DIALOGUE, he has a distinctive raspy, gravel-filled voice that makes him perfect for playing villains like Darkseid in the Super Friends shows, or of course the infamous Doctor Claw ("NEXT TIME, GADGET!!! NEXT TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMMMMMME!"). '80s kids will no doubt also remember him as Megatron and Galvatron in The Transformers or Ray & Slimer on The Real Ghostbusters, while '90s kids remember his Animaniacs characters Runt, Buttons and Ralph the Security Guard.

Inside Out

Post by Jabroniville »

INSIDE OUT (2015):
Written by:
Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve, Josh Cooley & Ronnie del Carmen

-A movie at once gimmicky and VERY well-thought-out, Inside Out is based around five emotions at the heart of a girl named Riley, and the disaster that befalls when, after a move to a strange new city, Joy and Sadness got lost in Riley's mind. Since Joy has constantly found Sadness to be an unnecessary bringdown, this is unfortunate for everyone. And while the gimmick could have grown old, they instead get REALLY DEEP with it, as the characters go into the nature of memory, the subconscious, and more. I love the scenes in which the other emotions attempt to mimic Joy's responses to her father- Anger just comes off as bitchy, while Disgust comes off as sarcastic and disrespectful, earning punishment from Riley's dad. Similarly, Sadness being in charge of talking to Riley's class just causes her to break down.

And then it gets REALLY MATURE, as Joy learns that the mixing of Riley's important happy memories with Sadness actually causes them to become bittersweet, emotional memories of Riley's past in her old hometown. More or less, the movie explains that part of growing up and moving on in life is a bit of sadness and joy when you look back. And of course the deal with Riley's old imaginary friend Bing-Bong, who saves the day in the most emotional way possible ("Take her to the MOON for me"), beating the Avengers to the punch three years before Infinity War.

The bits with the bickering mother and father (who OF COURSE are depicted like a bunch of mature, structured women and a completely clueless man) are a tad tired, though at least the movie has them reconcile in the end- the female emotions have to confess that "He's a really good guy". Some of the voice actors do a really amazing job, here- Lewis Black was BORN to play Anger, and Phyllis from The Office kills it as the dready, Eeyore-like Sadness.

Reception & Cultural Impact:
-Not having much effect on the Parks or anything, the movie nonetheless made a KILLING at the box office ($850 million+), and most importantly was a reminder that Pixar still HAD IT after a weak series of movies that saw a Cars sequel, a Monsters Inc. sequel, and The Good Dinosaur coming out- Disney had been actually BEATING its Pixar brethren for so long that this became a very important "Oh no- they're still Pixar" moment, that was later reassured by the success of Coco.

I have never heard of Inside Out. That just seems... implausible, given the media machine it had access to for promotion. It sounds good, though.

He was also Iceman in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

There's an old joke about a convention where Frank was taking challenges. Someone offered, "Two crabs arguing with each other on the ocean floor, blowing bubbles at each other."

Frank immediately hit back with "Male or female?"

Also, there's a story that during the casting of Gargoyles, another actor brought in to read for the part of Bronx said, "I'll just hold the script until Frank gets here."
"My heart is as light as a child's, a feeling I'd nearly forgotten. And by helping those in need, I will be able to keep that feeling alive."

The Good Dinosaur

Post by Jabroniville »

THE GOOD DINOSAUR (2015):
Written by:
Meg LeFauve, Peter Sohn, Erik Benson, Kelsey Mann & Bob Peterson

-Possibly the least-respected Pixar movie of all time, The Good Dinosaur had a notoriously-bad creative process- while it was merely one of MANY Pixar films to switch directors mid-stream, it also got delayed REPEATEDLY, to the point where it came out in the same year as Inside Out. And that movie (and other Disney productions) got the lion's share of the hype that year, making it REALLY clear that the studio was sweeping this one under the rug. I mean, it was PALPABLE, and even the trailers and toys were given a "meh" response. While Pixar movies were usually RELENTLESSLY artistic (even the simple designs in Inside Out were fuzzy seemingly just for the purpose of making them harder to animate), these just looked like goofy cartoon dinosaurs.

The movie centers around "what if the meteor that killed the dinosaurs missed Earth?". Humans grow up alongside dinosaurs, with cavemen being treated like wild animals by the intelligent dinosaurs. Arlo, a good dinosaur, semi-adopts "Spot", a runaway human boy, and risks his life taking Spot back to his family.

Reception & Cultural Impact:
-Like I said, a giant "MEH". Critics liked it enough- 76% is low for Pixar, but good enough for most popcorn movies... but this was PIXAR. People EXPECTED stuff from them. And coming out with the much-beloved Inside Out a few months earlier... it didn't hold up. The movie remains the lowest-grossing Pixar movie of all time- doing barely over $300 million worldwide, which is less than half of most of its immediate contemporaries (and even some from DreamWorks and other studios). The toys, made of unininteresting designs from the movies, were shelfwarmers, and I don't even REMEMBER seeing stuff in the Disney Store- it was like the studio knew this one was gonna disappoint, and just ignoring it in favor of upcoming releases instead. The movie has now been completely forgotten- though at least doesn't have a bad reputation, like the Cars movies do.
