Enigma (Riddler's Daughter)

Post by Jabroniville »

ENIGMA I (aka Riddler's Daughter II)
Created By:
Geoff Johns & Tony Daniel
First Appearance: The Teen Titans #38 (Sept. 2006)
Role: One-Off Character
Group Affiliations: The Teen Titans

-Another one of the "These guys joined and left during the One Year Gap period" Titans, Riddler's Daughter was a one-off joke inspired by Joker's Daughter. As good at riddling as her "father", she used a question-mark-shaped cane as a weapon. After One Year Later, she reappeared as Enigma, a member of Deathstroke's Titans East. Enigma & Joker's Daughter then psychologically tortured Raven in a hall of mirrors, and revealed that she wanted her father to accept her- the Riddler even confirms her parentage. It's possibly he maybe kills her near the end of the Pre-New-52 continuity.

-Another Enigma shows up in Trinity, unrelated to the first.

-A sweet-natured girl with Flying Blaster solar-themed powers, Solstice was introduced to the Teen Titans in 2010, making her a character who debuted JUST prior to the "New 52". The daughter of two Indian archaeologists, Kiran Singh meets up with and befriends another daughter of an archaelogist, Cassie Sandsmark, and both girls reveal their superhero identities when some villains attack. Being helped by the Titans in order to find her missing parents, Solstice happily decides to join the team. And then the New 52 happened, and she took a back seat! The New 52 version of the Teen Titans still used her for a short while, however, but gave her the origin of being experimented upon by a Secret Organization that left her freakish (her skin is black and smokey with light shining through the cracks in her shell)- despite this, she still remains upbeat. She may or may not be dead after a continuity shuffle.

-So it seems like she was a brand-new character with some potential and a sweet personality (a TRUE rarity in modern comics, which is full of snarkers and brats on the teenage side of things in particular), but she was pretty well exterminated by the VERY sudden decision to wipe out all of DC continuity and start over. So we never really got to see what the character was capable of.

Wendy & Marvin- Super Teens:
-Wendy and Marvin represent an infamous part of DC's history- the two characters were a duo of Sidekicks of the Super Friends in the well-known Super Friends show, palling around with their pet Wonder Dog. The era might make this obvious, but they were an attempt to include some of the Scooby Doo magic, as that show was tearing up the airwaves and becoming a pop culture phenomenon at the time- throwing a part of friendly teens and their dog with the super-heroes was a big attempt at popularizing the show. Scooby-Doo was only four years old at the time, and hadn't yet become infamous in its own right (and then over-played in modern times). And if anyone's unaware of my feelings about Scooby-Doo, let me just say now that I HATE IT and don't even want to get into how much, because I don't want to get fifty PMs asking me of I'm feeling okay :). Needless to say I would sacrifice Frozen to get Scooby-Doo removed from pop culture forever.

-While also being inspired by Scoob and the gang, Wendy & Marvin were also "Audience Inserts"- many shows at the time featured Teen Sidekicks of the main characters, similar to how 1960s comics includes a lot of Snapper Carrs and Rick Joneses- mouthy, "cool" teens who hang out with the heroes the way the AUDIENCE wishes they could. It's never really explained just WHY the heroes let the kids hang out with them, as is tradition in the genre. The comics made up some stuff- Wendy was the niece of a detective who trained Batman, and Marvin might have been related to the woman whose identity Wonder Woman used as her alter ego in Man's World.

-Wendy was a generic Friendly Teen, while Marvin was a bit of a well-meaning bumbler, wearing a cape and shirt with a big "M" on it. Wonder Dog was basically Scoob- intelligent enough to be communicative, but also a bumbler. The Super Friends show was cancelled after two seasons, but re-ran until 1976, at which point the All-New Super Friends Hour debuted, featuring a NEW trio of Sidekicks- Zan & Jayna, the Wonder Twins, and their pet monkey-thing, Gleek. The comic at the time soon replaced Wendy & Marvin with the Wonder Twins as well. Aside from one more cameo in that book, that was the end of Wendy & Marvin- Kingdom Come makes a cute visual gag of the Superhuman-Themed Restaurant featuring Marvin and LOBO next to each other in the placards outside- the two obviously representing VERY different eras and sentiments in the industry: Marvin a representation of DC's Non-Serious, Super-Kiddie side, and Lobo representing the ultraviolence and naughty behavior of the '90s. An older, fatter Marvin also appears as a drunkard who mocks Superman himself before being punched out by Atom Smasher. In this, Mark Waid was commenting about just how DARK things had gotten.

Wendy & Marvin in Modern Times:
-2006 saw the return of Wendy & Marvin in continuity, as the pair, now fraternal twins both named Harris, were technical geniuses who were the caretakers of Titans Tower. It was basically a cutesy reference to the old Super Friends show, and thus in great fun... but of course this was the era in which the "innocent old days" stuff was often crassly made fun of. And so the twins adopt a stray dog they name Wonder Dog... and it turns out to be a demonic monster which then EATS MARVIN and severely mauls Wendy, leaving her crippled. HAHAHAHAHAHA FUCK THOSE CHARACTERS AND THAT SHOW, AM I RIGHT??

-So yeah, Wendy is now crippled thanks to a really sick, dark turn by Sean McKeever, and it turns out that their father is The Calculator (a former goofball villain now "Catmanned" into being an intelligent, villainous version of Oracle). He swears vengeance on the Titans for not keeping his children safe, while another writer actually realizes how shitty that whole thing was, and actuall works to use Wendy a little bit- Oracle takes Wendy under her wing, eventually turning her into the helpful Proxy, and helping her with her paraplegic status. And then... she's basically gone from comics. I mean, she was only featured in Barabara-related stuff for a bit, helped out in the Stephanie Brown Batgirl book (a sacrifice to the "New 52"), and then the Reboots didn't include her. So she's gone.

I've got no particular love for Marvin, Wendy or Wonder Dog, but that whole bit in the Titans had to be one of the most mean-spirited things I've ever seen in comics. That is up there with "making Speedball Penance", "killing Karate Kid 3 times" and "anything Garth Ennis does to non-Superman superheroes".

There was even a Scooby Doo crossover with Johnny Bravo. There's even a DC comic called "Scooby-Doo Team Up" that features crossovers between various DC and Hanna-Barbera characters. And of course, there's the famous "New Scooby Doo Movies" episodes that featured the gang teamed up with Batman and Robin, which was even referenced in the Brave and the Bold cartoon.

Rivalry (Mother)- Cissie was emancipated from her mother when Bonnie King put her through a highly-intensive bout of training in order to become a superhero. The two took a long time to reconnect.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 15 (114)

-Huh, so Arrowette was actually inspired by a Silver Age wannabe sidekick to Green Arrow, not a Retcon Character retroactively added to give a pretend backstory, like a lot of DC legacy heroes (Steel, etc.). A VERY "DC" kind of story, she uses gimmicked arrows with feminine names (a "powder puff" arrow), is too vain to wear a mask, and is too clumsy to be an effective superhero... but dates Oliver in the background for a bit. Ironically, as Bonnie King was pressured by her mother to be an Olympic archer (and was angered by Bonnie only getting bronze instead of gold, making Bonnie avoid her for life), she herself puts pressure on her own daughter (having married and been widowed in the interim to modern times) into becoming a superhero, too.

-Cissie King-Jones is thus the daughter of the original Arrowette, and is basically forced into a hardcore regiment of archery, judo, kickboxing, gymnastics, ballet and everything else "required" to become a hero. This causes her tremendous resentment in a "Tiger Mom" sense. Arrowette thus vexes Impulse, but his mentor Max Mercury realizes what's going on, and has Bonnie punished by Child Protection Services, who take Cissie away and put her in a boarding school. This makes sense... but is a bit incongruous to a genre in which EVERY HERO ENDANGERS CHILDREN IN THIS WAY.

-Cissie actually goes on to appear in Young Justice from this minor one-off, setting up a balanced roster of six characters (three boys and three girls). She still has misgivings about the heroic life, but ultimately retires when she nearly executes some criminals for killing her social worker. She makes up with her mother, and even becomes a gold medal Olympian! And oddly... her retirement STICKS. Probably helped by DC ALREADY inventing another Teen Sidekick Archeress in the meantime (Speedy III), she just appears in the background of some comics. She only dresses up in the costume one more time- a one-off where she helps Wonder Girl rescue her mom.

-It's a bit odd to see a character so short-lived in comics, but this is kind of the result of having a fairly minor-league book that nobody was apparently checking up on, with heroes that are later entirely rewritten into something else- she just got skipped over, like the "forgotten" X-Force & Excalibur characters of the 1990s.

-Arrowette is a bit sub-par for a PL 8 super-heroine (not being ideally laid-out defensively), but okay for a Teen Hero book.

There were A LOT of super hero cartoons on Saturday mornings on in the mid-late 1960s: New Adventures of Superman ==> Superman / Aquaman Adventure Hour ==> Batman / Superman Adventure Hour; Spider-Man; Fantastic Four; Marvel Super-Heroes; Space Ghost; Birdman & the Galaxy Trio; Mighty Mightor; the Impossibles; Super President; Super Six; Young Samson; Hercules; et al.

And parents noticed. And, as usual, the parents noticed the level of violence in the cartoons, parent groups formed, letters were written, etc. And, almost at once, all of these cartoons disappeared from Saturday morning. But in the early 1970s happened. The second Scooby-Doo series The New Scooby-Doo Movies featured Scooby and the gang meeting and teaming up with Sandy Duncan, Sonny & Cher, Jerry Reeves, the Three Stooges, the Addams Family, Josie and the Pussycats, Don Knotts, and many more. And in two stories (four episodes) Scooby and the Gang met Batman and Robin. And those episodes did particularly well in the ratings. And, over on the Brady Kids cartoon, Superman met the Bradys in one episode, and Wonder Woman did in another. And again, those episodes ratings spiked. Well, the network people noticed. Super heroes being non-violent and helping mystery solving kids still got good ratings. And they weren't flagged by the parent groups.

And thus, the Super Friends show was born. The four heroes from Scooby and the Bradys, plus Aquaman, who had had his own show a few years earlier. But to fit the format that got past the parent groups, they needed the mystery solving kids. Thus, Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog were created. And, for the record, those 16 episodes did well enough in the ratings that they stayed in Saturday morning rotation for four years. From fall of 1973 through the summer of 1977. 1977 gave us the All-New Superfriends Hour, with the Wonder Twins, a format change, and a gob of guest stars, of whom 2/3 were comics characters, and 3 were very ethnic network creations.

But anyway, that's why Wendy and Marvin exist. They weren't so much capitalising on a fad as using a fad to get super heroes on TV past the censors.

It's unclear how much E. Nelson Bridwell had a hand in creating the characters for the network. But he was definitely the guy who "made up some stuff" for the comics to explain them.

Wendy Harris, the niece of Harvey Harris (being the detective who trained Batman), was also broadly hinted at being the counterpart to Earth-Two's Wendi Harris, the dark haired actress who became Wendi Tyler when she married Rex (Hourman) Tyler.

Marvin White was the son of Dan and Diana White (no might, it was stated with certainty). Diana White (nee Prince) had been a Navy nurse and near doppleganger of Princess Diana of Paradise Island. Because she wanted to be with her fiancee, Dan White, who had been shipped out, I think to Alaska, she sold her identity and credentials to Wonder Woman (WW using the proceeds from her stage appearances doing Bullets and Bracelets for the crowds.)

ENB clearly considered the Super Friends to be in Earth-One continuity when he wrote the tie-in comic. But no one else did. Eventually fans started referring to "Earth-1A" to explain the differences.

Complications:
Weakness/Prejudice (HIV-Positive)- Mia carries the virus which causes AIDS, which makes her blood and some other bodily fluids contagious.
Motivation (Fighting Crime)- Having been rescued from a dark life by Green Arrow, Mia is inspired to take up the cause.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 15 / Defenses: 17 (122)

-I actually thought this character was a Judd Winick creation, as he typically adds one gay or HIV-Positive character to each book he's writing, as those are causes very near and dear to his heart (owing to his friendship with a gay man named Pedro, who eventually died of AIDS, as detailed in an autobiographical comic Pedro and Me). But it turns out that Mia was a Kevin Smith creation, back when Kevin, as the highest-ranking nerd on Earth (he was then a popular writer & director, and among the few who was openly nerdy, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe became a thing), was given the reins to resurrect the origianl Green Arrow. I actually read the first trade when it came out, but didn't follow up on it.

-Mia was a teen runaway and drug user who ended up in a child prostitution ring- one that Oliver Queen broke up when he returned as Green Arrow. She quickly becomes his new ward, and the two grow close, though it takes her FOUR YEARS to become a superhero, which is pretty crazy for comics. I think Smith just wanted to use her as a "Human's Eye View" character. Then, three years after her creation, Judd Winick decided that her past had left her HIV-Positive (oh, well, there you go), and became kind of a symbol for that. And then HE had her become the new Speedy, sidekick of Oliver. This was... iffy, as, y'know, SUPERHEROES BLEED A LOT, and I'm pretty sure that's highly unethical. You don't see a lot of HIV-Positive folks in WWE or UFC, much less a world where you frequently end up with arrow wounds.

-In any case, Mia quickly joined the Teen Titans, as that book was swapping rosters. However, she quickly leaves, getting roped up in more Green Arrow stuff, such as recuperating post-Infinite Crisis, dealing with a boyfriend and moving to England for him... and then leaving him after he cheated (this comes off like a new writer came on and didn't like that angle). She was babysitting Roy Harper's daughter Lian when the bombs hit Star City and killed the girl- Roy blames her for leaving Lian to go fight the Electrocutioner (who set the bombs), leaving her shaken. I don't know if any of this was resolved before the New 52 takes over and makes her a minor background character.

-Mia is... okay, I'm not sure how much different she should be from Arrowette. I mean... two teenage blonde girls with Trick Arrows, working as sidekick-types. In the end, I made her a bit more well-balanced, being a proper PL 8 (120)-ish type with maxed-out Dodge & Accuracy, and a bit more overall skill.
