-Handsaw is the quickest and most accurate member of her crew, but also does the least damage, being the only female member. She's as big a goon as the rest of them, though, and her Handsaw is more like a big serrated sword. She never lands a hit- she wears glasses that avoids Madcap's "Frenzy-Inducing Stare", but he quickly knocks them off after she misses a strike, and she screams "BAAAA-kill! BAAAAA-kill!" and slams into Vice, knocking him over.

-Within a handful of months after the Power Tools' debut, a NEW group of them emerged under old leader Jackhammer. Both augmented with the Power Broker's enhancements, Buzz-Saw & Drill were highly-strong, but even more useless than Jackhammer, falling into each other and being unable to hit BattleStar. Buzz-Saw is a PL 6.5 thanks to his extremely-dangerous spinning blades, but Drill is only a PL 6 because really, what are DRILLS gonna do compared to Jackhammers & Buzz-Saws?

-While his teammate Drill was objectively INCREDIBLY stupid (using wrist-mounted DRILLS as weapons), the fact that Buzz-Saw couldn't out-compete him makes him look even worse. I mean, at least his crap were actual WEAPONS. Though I must say, Buzz-Saw has the stupidest haircut in comic book history. LOOK AT THE WAY HIS FLAT-TOP IS CUT. THAT HAS NEVER BEEN IN STYLE, EVER.

I think any tool-related jokes I could make have been done already. Though at least there's not a team called the Gardening Tools..because you'd have people named Hoe and Rake.

Complications:
Relationship (Havok)- The two dated on the X-Men, then in the background of Claremont's run, then were split for a long time until they joined X-Factor. Then they split while he was off in an Alternate Universe, then got back together in space. Then they broke up again. Basically, both are mid-tier X-Characters.
Secret (The Daughter of Magneto)- This doesn't really ever become relevant, though.
Enemy (Malice)- The Marauder has possessed Polaris in the past.
Vulnerable (Mind Control)- Polaris is often falling under Mind Control, even by the standards of a Marvel character.

Total: Abilities: 30 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 66 / Defenses: 22 (146)

Polaris- Doing the Least With the Most:
-Oh, you do NOT wanna be a D-League character in the X-Men books... a regular D-lister like Cloak or Moon Knight or something can get failed pushes every now and then, and then float harmlessly back into Marvel Limbo. But in the X-Books? You debut, you falter, you get de-powered, you get taken over by Malice, you gain new weirder powers, you find out you're not Magneto's daughter after all, then it turns out you ARE his daughter anyways, then you get dumped at the altar, you go insane, you get sane, you lose your powers AGAIN, and then gain them back because of Apocalypse... you see where I'm going with this.

-Spectacularly, Polaris KEEPS GETTING USED, despite the fact that she's not really all that interesting a character. Interesting (and confusing) stuff just tends to HAPPEN TO HER. My guess is she's memorable because of the instant visual cue of her green hair (sorta like Rogue's skunk-stripe), so everyone always goes "Hey, what about Polaris", whereas someone like Rachel Summers or Stacy-X gets forgotten about, despite being about as generic a character.

Polaris in the Silver Age:
-Polaris debuted in the Post-Stan & Jack era of the X-Men book, back when it was a semi-failing, bottom-tier book. She was discovered when Mesmero used a "Psyche-Generator" to lure mutants with latent powers to him. Polaris, the most powerful of these mutants, was named the "Queen of the Mutants" by Mesmero for her Magneto-like abilities- Magneto himself soon claimed to be her birth father, but it was revealed that this was a ruse. Iceman nursed feelings for her, but her own attentions were drawn towards Havok. Initially called "Magnetrix", she switched to her real name- her and Havok quickly left the book to become college students. They were seen in a one-off battling the Hulk, but did not appear again until Giant-Size X-Men #1, as victims of Krakoa alongside the Original Five X-Men. They quickly left the book upon the formation of the new team.

Polaris in the Bronze Age:
-Lorna would not be named "Polaris" (named for a star, though the "pole" name reflects magnetism) until she was kidnapped by Erik the Red during Chris Claremont's run on the book. She and Havok were mind-controlled into fighting the X-Men, then went back to inactive status. The two are, along with Iceman, the least-used of the X-Men by Claremont, who seemed to have nothing for them to do until the *1980s*, when Polaris has her mind taken over by Malice, a new member of the Marauders. Given that Claremont's favorite trope EVER is "Female Superhero Under Sexy Mind Control", this obviously led to a renewed push for the character, as she finds the Malice entity permanently attached to her (even Malice can't break the connection). Eventually, the Savage Land Mutate known as Zaladane kidnaps Polaris, claiming to be her sister. Using the High Evolutionary's machine, she strips Polaris of her magnetic powers, which breaks the connection between her and Malice. However, an unexpected side-effect results in Lorna shifting from a Magnetic Super-Hero into a brawny, statuesque, busty, INCREDIBLY hot amazon.

-It was in THIS form that Young Jab encountered her, in an X-Men annual as one of Dr. Moira MacTaggert's "Islanders", as Moira could not figure out the mutation, nor cure Lorna's ability to create an aura of negative emotions around her. The Shadow King soon infected the entire Muir Island Base (including Moira, Siryn, The Multiple Man and Legion), using Polaris as the "nexus" by which to infect the entire world with negative emotions, but the X-Men & X-Factor save the day. Zaladane dies earlier, and Psylocke uses her Psychic Knife on Polaris- some combination of the two finally breaks Lorna's alternate mutation, and she returns to magnetism.

Polaris in X-Factor:
-Peter David, in charge of a FOURTH X-Book, and one that no longer has a real purpose (as the initial squad was just former Original X-Men), was stuck building a roster out of the discarded bits of the X-Mythos- curiously, he centered his team around Havok & Polaris, who had not been a couple for a CONSIDERABLE length of time (Havok had since joined the Australia-Era X-Men, then went through the Siege Perilous and disappeared for ages). They led a team that now included the Multiple Man, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane and Quicksilver- it would eventually add Random. The whole team was now fully-trained government operatives- "Tame Muties", as some derogatorily called them. Now very timid and lacking confidence owing to years of mental manipulation, Polaris was able to surpass these issues thanks to Doc Samson's psychiatric help. Malice returned to regain control of Polaris, but died at the hands of Mister Sinister. X-Factor would change hands, and suddenly become a Forge/Mystique/Sabretooth book, Polaris getting injured for a while. Her & Havok's relationship was still unresolved when he disappeared into his Mutant X solo book in an Alternate Universe. X-Factor quickly ended, Polaris splitting it up after being left in charge.

Polaris Post-X-Factor:
-It was around here that Polaris entered her next, uglier chapter in "X-Limbo". Marvel by this point was letting a TON of random writers go through the X-Books, resulting in side characters like Polaris having dumber and dumber things happen to them in the name of "shaking things up". She was rounded up as the most minor member of "The Twelve"- a group meant to empower Apocalypse. She briefly helped Magneto in charge of Genosha, but soon turned on him. It was here that she learned that Magneto was ACTUALLY her biological father all along! It turns out that the false results earlier were accomplished by Mastermind, who was then working for Magneto. She's ultimately left traumatized as a survivor of the Sentinel massacre of millions of mutants on Genosha. Oh, but things would get EVEN CRAZIER.

-See, this was when CHUCK AUSTEN took over the X-Men book. And he decided that Havok was very much like him, and the X-nurse, Annie, was like his wife. And to make that relationship "work", he had to get rid of Polaris, the ex. So Havok & Polaris nearly married on the X-Lawn... only for Havok to LEAVE HER AT THE ALTAR, an act which drove her completely insane. Like, "Screaming and trying to kill everyone" insane. She was eventually KO'd, and Professor X engaged in some "psychic therapy" so apparently attempted murder was now okay- she ended up back on a team, and Austen pushed her towards Iceman (who, remember, had only been into her for like a few months back in the '60s). Their relationship ended quickly, and she also dumped Havok, who wanted to get back together now that Annie was gone.

Modern Polaris:
-The "Austen Mess" had left Polaris borderline unusable, as she was at the center of a lot of that dumb stuff. Austen left, but she still had the baggage of being "Formerly Crazy", "Magneto's Daughter" (a stupid revelation that ADDED NOTHING TO ANYONE, as he ALREADY had super-powered children by this point!), and "Always With a C-Tier X-Man Romantically" with Havok. She was de-poweroed by M-Day, and hid that fact from her teammates, but soon comes clean (they'd already guessed it, anyhow) and regains them from... Daap, the brother of Doop (WTF?). She's forced to join the Horsemen of Apocalypse, but breaks free, then joins an X-Men band flying around in space (Havok's team, along with Rachel Summers, Darwin and others). She and Havok are left in charge of the Starjammers following Corsair's death at the hands of Vulcan, and they take a minor role in one of the Annihilation stories. So minor that they basically stop mattering to everything, and are quietly written out.

-Lorna's last relevant in another Peter David X-Factor series, but it's quickly cancelled. David does, in fact, show that Lorna's powers activating is what killed her parents (ie. why she was an orphan when she debuted). She & Havok break up AGAIN when he leads the Uncanny Avengers while she takes over X-Factor, but her teammate Quicksilver spies on her on Havok's behalf. But after that, she's basically doing nothing of note.

Polaris Overall:
-Polaris is a tough one to get any kind of a "fix" on. She's basically multiple X-team's least-important member throughout history, only mattering here and there, and never having any kind of a consistent personality (she's even a "Generic Person" under CLAREMONT)- David used her as a somewhat-timid, nervous backgrounder, she flies around during the Space Stuff as a minor tagalong to Crystal, and more. And really, they retcon that Magneto IS her birth father after all... and then NEVER DO ANYTHING WITH IT? Magneto- the top supervillain of the X-Books and one of Marvel's most important characters- is her FATHER, and there's not a single story arc that puts this in any kind of a major focus. Like... WHY?

The Powers of Polaris:
-Polaris is basically a mini-version of Joseph, himself a mini-version of Magneto. She's got a rather wide array of Magnetic Control-related powers, she's a half-decent Blaster, and she can be handy for almost any team. Nothing truly fancy, though, and she's got some VERY low saves for somebody who engages in alot of superheroic activities (she gets mind-controlled alot, and is rather nuts even WITHOUT Chuck Austen writing her). Note that at some points, she gets upgraded to PL 11 (notably whenever she turns evil... the reverse is true of villains who turn good. Comics are funny like that).

-Here's the short-lived Muir Island X-Man variant of Polaris, an Amazonian powerhouse. I actually liked this design so much as a kid I semi-based the visuals for a favored female character after her... even as a kid, I had a thing for the busty Amazonian Powerhouses. This Polaris is kind of a weird Brick set-up, being a bit weaker than Colossus or The Thing, making her a low-pointed Powerhouse type of character. Less effective than her old form, too. But DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN that outfit.

Did she ever keep the same costume for more than one panel?

Polaris on the TV show The Gifted is an interesting variation of the character. Unfortunately, it's a case where giving a character their comic book headdress doesn't always work as well in live action.

Huh- Uncanny X-Men. net actually does a LOT of work on the character backgrounds. I didn't realize they were so thorough, and updated so much- the site always seemed like it hadn't changed since 2000, so I never really used it for research on the big names: https://uncannyxmen.net/character-relat ... d-heritage

It’s the thing with “weird hair/skin” characters. The artists usually stick them in bland costumes because the HAIR is the focus, but then the next artist goes “hey that costume is bland” and starts screwing with it to make it better.

-Powderkeg debuted to fight Monica Rambeau's Captain Marvel, having been hired by a crimelord, and ended up being a bottom-tier, but still a recurring enough villain to get one-shots against Spider-Man, The Thing and others. He was part of a prison break at the Vault, following Venom in the breakout, and he teams up with Vermin & Mentallo in defeating Iron Man & Hank Pym. However, enough energy is pumped through Mentallo to stun all the prisoners there. He was on Doc Ock's Masters of Evil team in The Guardians of the Galaxy- this mostly forgotten goon squad end up at Avengers Mansion during the Infinity War, but the GUARDIANS are present there instead- and then everyone gets mixed up in a fight against Evil Magus Duplicates of both teams. Doc Ock immediately tries to assault the Guardians once more, but the rest of his team balk- they JUST fought back-to-back with these guys! Ock insists, and the "Masters" turn on him, chasing him out of the mansion!

-Powderkeg has largely fallen into disuse since the '90s, but is occasionally seen in background scenes like "Meanwhile at the hidden villain bar" or "meanwhile at this prison break"- he almost crushes two Avengers Academy kids during one of the latter, but Tigra stops him. He'd actually be a pretty fine jobber, since he's kind of like a poor man's Wrecking Crew & Nitro combined, and his name is CLASSIC "Dumb Jobber", but nobody really sees fit to use him.

-Powderkeg is a low-level, under-Advantaged guy, since he's a jobber and all, but he's still rather potent if used well. He's a PL 8 loser, but likes to go with All-Out or Power Attack (he can fight with Ben Grimm, after all), bringing him up to either +11 accuracy or +15 damage, in addition to an Area Damage effect. He's also got some Mercenary/Thief skills on him.

-Huh- I managed to miss this one while statting up both Havok AND the Living Monolith recently. Plasma was a pretty young college student who fell for Havok in a Marvel Comics Presents story (with quickie little 6-8-page stories in each issue, mostly To Be Continued), and he for her, even though she misguidedly joined the Cult of the Living Pharaoh while on a school trip. Fleeing from them once she learns that they intend to sacrifice human beings, she eventually goes all "HAHAHAHAHA EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG!", revealing her true allegiance to the Pharaoh/Monolith after all. Using her powers, she absorbs all of Havok's plasma-blasting might, even defeating Wolverine in the process, but in a funny anticlimax, Havok just punches her in the face instead (I mean, she can't absorb THAT).

-The character reappears a couple of years later in Mackie's Moon Knight. Moon Knight & Ghost Rider team up against her and the cultists she leads in an attack on New York- the Rider is vaporized by her (later reforming), but Plasma is killed during a high-speed chase on the Subway system. Curiously, she never did meet up with her master in-story, and she has never reappeared- pretty much an eyeblink in the history of comics.

-Plasma is a highly-limited Blaster/Growth-type of character.

-Huh- so this weird guy from that Avengers story I read where the team meets Puma and fights The U-Foes actually showed up in more stuff. Actually, it's pretty obvious what happened- Danny Fingeroth wrote that issue AND Darkhawk, and so continued his little story in another book. This happens a LOT in the 1970s & '80s, as you'll find these little Jobber Villains or whomever, and they'll all of a sudden show up in another book... and it turns out both were written by the same guy.

-Charles Little Sky is a mutant from the same reservation as Thomas "Puma" Fireheart, and set off his powers during a brawl between Puma & The Avengers, which led to the U-Foes springing out of his portal and fighting EVERYONE. He escapes into another portal, and starts picking up a variety of weapons. The U-Foes find him again, but he is saved by Darkhawk, Captain America & Daredevil (wow, Powell teamed up with EVERYONE). He would gain access to a "Darkhawk" armor after a space-criminal who was wearing it got killed, too. Portal later got hypnotized by Sauron (on orders of The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants) into fighting Darkhawk, Spidey & Sleepwalker. He appears a DECADE later as the head of A.R.M.O.R. (an offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D., naturally), sending Jocasta & Machine Man to the Marvel Zombies universe, and bringing them back. He later authorizes Morbius to create a new "Midnight Sons" team.

-Portal creates... well, portals, capable of sending people just about anywhere, though his accuracy sometimes falters. I don't know how skilled he really is, but he's apparently the head of the government's Inter-Dimensional Protection agency, which makes sense given his powers. I'm just surprised someone remembered he existed. He's got some good Gadgets on him, too.

That is really a random character if I've saw one.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”
