I know the new series isn't everyones cup of tea so to speak but I really liked the new design for cheetara over the older one.

-Slithe, with the trademark 1980s reptilian villain trait of emphasizing his "SSSSSSSSSSS" sounds, was a stocky, extremely wide character, who claimed leadership of the Mutants on Third Earth. A remorseless, cruel being, he had a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and was prone to insulting his own troops. His key character flaw was his arrogance, which was a problem considering how clever the ThunderCats could be, and how little his immediate inferiors respected him.

I always liked the way SSSSlithe ended his statements with a sarcastic "yessssss?" The Mutants in general were good villains, threatening but ultimately incompetent, like most 80s villains. The big problem I had was that there was only 3 of them vs 6 Thundercats (if you count the kittens) so they were never going to be a threat in a stand up fight.

Reminds me of Transformers and how they’d often fill out the ranks of the Decepticons with random palette swaps in the background. It’s a very “video gamey” concept to have tons of clones/palette swaps of the villains as Mooks. I believe the Monster Minds from The Wheeled Warriors used this literally, having the Mooks be cloned versions of the vehicle forms of the villains.

-Monkian was one of the worst aspects of the show to me when re-watching some episodes as an adult- not only is his name COMPLETELY ridiculous ("Monkey" becomes "Monkian"?), but Peter Newman decided the best way to depict his speech would be to take a whiny/brutish tone and then go "ooh-ooh!" after every other word. It's excruciating listening to him talk.

-Monkian was depicted as a giant idiot, but he was also rather stealthy, and tended to be the guy to get information on the ThunderCats, either by eavesdropping or by hearing it from someone else. He typically does what he is told. Otherwise he's just a big lug.

-Jackalman was a more typical henchman in ThunderCats, being foolish and cowardly, but was occasionally prone to grabbing power if he spotted an opportunity. Though cautious, he was sure to never show gratitude- he and the other Mutants were prone to attacking the Cats immediately after being saved form some sort of calamity- "Never do a favor for a favor!", cried Jackalman, when Lion-O rescued him.

-Vultureman was much different form his fellow Mutants- he was actually SMART. This great inventor and flying creature actually debuted in the thirteenth episode, but the other Mutants acted like they'd always known him- he just hadn't shown up by that point. This kind of thing happened A LOT in 1980s cartoons, as the writers were suddenly informed by the toy company that a new character needed some focus, and they were left scrambling to come up with an idea for him, especially in an "Established Setting" like ThunderCats, they everything was laid out right from the start.

-Vultureman often broke ranks with the other Mutants, teamed up with the Lunataks (their rivals), and even went solo, making his own deals with Mumm-Ra. His inventions were often misused, with him being blamed for their failure- this led him to build self-destruct mechanisms in all of his gear, just in case Slithe pissed him off one too many times.

-Ratar-O apparently showed up later, and took control of the Mutant forces from Slithe. A big, fat rat decked out like Genghis Khan, he was an "arrogant and domineering" leader. Slithe of course was unimpressed about being booted out of leadership, while Vultureman seemed to appreciate his competence.

I'll give the 2011ThunderCats show credit, they did a decent job of upgrading Monkian and Jackalman into legitimate threats who were a match for a single ThunderCat one-on-one. In the 80s show they could really only be expected to be a threat if they had surprise, numbers or some kind of scheme on their side.

It was also weird how the Mutant's forces would vary from "Just the four main mutants" to "these guys have a small army working for them". Making the main four leaders of a small mutant army likely would have helped keep the mutants as a viable threat, giving the ThunderCats some cannon fodder to goon sweep and then leave the leaders as moderately viable threats.

Mostly the Mutants were a case of what I call 80s Villain Syndrome. You'd have maybe one legitimately threating villain (Mumm-Ra, Skeletor, Hordak, Venger, Megatron), and then then the villains would either be relative mirror images of the heroes (the Decepticons, Skeletor's goons, the Lunatacs, the Horde, etc.) or be goons with the same general abilities (Cobra troopers, Horde, Troopers, the Mutants, etc.).

One series that stands out as averting this was the SilverHawks series. The SilverHawks were all cyborgs who could fly, shoot lasers and had limited strength and durability enhancements. A few of them had unique abilities, but mostly they all had the same powers. The Mon-Starr Mob on the other hand had these villains with a really diverse set of abilities. One had massive super strength, one could shapeshift into whatever he wanted, one basically had the polearm version of Mjolnir, power wise these guys were much more interesting than the SilverHawks. It was very different.

The new series makes the characters seem/look younger...and I am now old, so old Cheetara is still better, IMO.

Jaga

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

JAGA
Played By:
Earl Hammond
Role: Mentor Figure

-Jaga was an odd idea for a character- based off of a Jaguar but not resembling one at all, he was an elder ThunderCat who chose to avoid suspended animation in order to accurately pilot the ThunderCats' ship on its way to Third Earth, instead of relying on chance. Because of this, he died of old age on the way there. A great friend to Lion-O's father Claudus, he remained as a ghostly image to guide Lion-O during his youth. It did turn out, however, that Jaga was indirectly responsible for the death of the planet Thundera, as he threw the Sword of Plun-Darr into the depths, causing the blade to wreck the planet.

The multiple mentions of Ghostbusters got me thinking..There's probably multiple builds of the original Ghostbusters team out there (though Real Ghostbusters would be a fun set), but then there's Filmation Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters (which is the one that I actually grew up watching on TV, oddly enough), both of which I doubt anyone ever bothered to stat. And one thing that's always got me curious is how to properly stat a Proton Pack. Maybe something like Shapeable Area Snare (that affects insubstantial and probably only works on ghosts/supernatural beings) linked to a Shapeable Damage Effect? (since the proton beams generally did a LOT of collateral damage)

And man, I remember hearing about the Q5 debacle with Real Ghostbusters in a youtube video. Not only did they attempt to "fix" a show that didn't need "fixing" in the first place, but apparently all their "studies" about what chlidren liked was apparently completely made up and they hadn't actually done any studies into it, so they were just doing stuff without any real basis behind it.

The Berserkers

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE BERSERKERS:
-These guys are a quartet of pirates who attacked the ThunderCats, but they were all killed when their pirate ship fell into a whirlpool. Later, Hammerhead returns to life and builds a new crew.

The Members:
CAPTAIN HAMMERHEAD: The only recurring member, Hammerhead leads the team. After their deaths, he is resurrected by Mumm-Ra to occupy the cloned body of Panthro. Lion-O defeats him in this form, but the spirt enters Hammerhead's body at the end of the episode. He later returns with a new band of pirates. His key weapon is a giant metal hand, though it can throw him off-balance at times.
TOP-SPINNER: A goofy-looking guy with a round, flat head, Top-Spinner doesn't talk much, but spins rapidly, which hammers his foes.
RAM BAM: Appears after the deaths of the others. Ram Bam is a cyborg who charges people head-first using his horned helmet.
CRUNCHER: Cruncher is very strong.

Lunataks

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE LUNATAKS:
-The Lunataks are a band of six Star Wars-inspired alien bandits who appeared in the later seasons of ThunderCats, having hailed from the Moons of Plun-Darr. They fought Mumm-Ra ages ago and were frozen in stasis, but freed upon Mumm-Ra's defeat, becoming a "Third Group" in the show (similar to Jem & the Holograms, ThunderCats added a third group to a later season, hoping to shake things up and sell more toys). The Lunataks are powerful and capable, but ultimately stupid and unable to work together. They mostly look pretty stupid, having little Sailor Moon crescents on their foreheads, but lunkish, under-detailed appearances (especially compared to the Mutants or ThunderCats).

The Members:
LUNA: Luna is a tiny, female sorceress who commands the Lunataks. She creates the schemes and leads the others, often riding on the back of Amok. Authoritative (ie. bitchy), she often has to deal with the rebellious minds of her team.
AMOK: A stupid, brutish, hunched-over figure who moves like a gorilla and has a monstrous chin. Limited vocalization, but a lot of raw strength and speed. Addicted to candy.
ALLURO: A cruel manipulator who uses a Crystal Ball on his staff to control others, but these can be broken when his courage falters. Can also create illusions. He attempted to take control of the team twice.
RED-EYE: A muscular guy with wrinkled lips and bright red eyes, he can see Infrared (allowing him to spot an invisible Tygra), and uses a spinning disc called a Sidewinder and an electrical beam from his chest plate. He's also an engineer and pilot, flying the Sky Tomb.
TUG MUG: A big fat guy with tripod legs that can leap great distances. He's so strong that he once SNAPPED THE SWORD OF OMENS with his bare hands! His "Gravity Carbine" can render people either light as a feather or heavy as stone, effectively combining Star Boy & Gravity Girl's powers into one weapon.
CHILLA: A beautiful, blue-skinned female, Chilla has the power of Freeze Breath and Heat Beams from her eyes. Her weakness is rock salt (which can melt ice).
