-Moses Magnum is a weird guy- turning from an Arms-Dealer (an Ethiopian traitor who sold out his own people for money and power) into a super-powered guy at the hands of Apocalypse. Rather than being a villain focused against one or two heroes, he's fought numerouis enemies, from The Punisher & Spider-Man to The X-Men (it was against Magnum that Banshee lost his powers the first time, which booted him off the early Giant-Size era X-Men, resulting in him missing out on The Dark Phoenix Saga and numerous other classics). He eventually ended up fighting some black heroes (being Marvel's most prominent black villain... until the Black Panther movie came out), namely The Black Panther & Deathlok. He's quite powerful, but is really underused, possibly because his name is silly.

-In his debut as an arms dealer, Moses Magnum fought Spider-Man and the Punisher- he was thought dead after the Punisher exposed him to chemical weapons, but later faced Luke Cage, where he seemingly fell to his death. Inexplicably, he was rescued by Apocalypse, who gave him super-powers dubbed the "Magnum Force". He allied with Tyrannus and others to use his powers to create earthquakes. His plot to take control of Japan (lest he sink it beneath the waves) led to the X-Men & Sunfire getting involved, and Banshee was forced to tax his powers to their brink in order to shut down Magnum's machines. After this, he largely went into disuse, fighting Deathlok, the Black Panther and the Avengers in Kurt Busiek's run, where he again seemingly fell to his death. He later fought Spider-Man and was part of Dark Reign, as Norman Osborn sprung him from prison to help make Daken look good.

-Moses Magnum is a PL 12 Blaster guy who generates Seismic Energy like a super-version of Avalanche of the X-books- he can put a hurting on multiple people quite easily, generally working as an Area Attacker with a side-Blast.

The links don't work anymore (because the page URLs have changed), but it is still possible to get to the posts using the search function. It's annonynig, though.

As for Moses Magnum - While I've only ever seen him in one story arc (the one which resulted in Banshee having to leave the team because he burned out his power to stop Magnum's earthquakes), he really stuck out to me. Probably because he showed a LOT of power there, like KOing Wolverine in one blow (pretty pedestrian now, but even Cyclops was like "Oh my God, he decked Wolverine."), and almost knocked Colossus clean off the island with a punch, and in general wrecking the X-Men. Plus it introduced the Mandroids to me.

oh jesus

MARVEL BOY I (Martin Simon Burns)
Created By:
Joe Simon & Jack Kirby
First Appearance: Daring Mystery Comics #6 (Sept. 1940)
Role: Forgotten Golden Age Hero, First Draft
Group Affiliations: None

-This entirely forgotten Golden Age hero was a mere one-off who never appeared again. His gimmick was that the noble hero Hercules had died and gone to Valhalla, but foresaw the rise of Hitler, and so arranged to have his spirit reborn in the body of a newborn child. Super-strong even as an infant, young Martin Burns learned of his origins when he turned fourteen years old from a "helpful shadow", donned a hideous blue costume with an "MB" logo on it, and began fighting Nazi saboteurs. In his only appearance, he stopped some Nazi spies and their U-Boat, though arrived late for school the next morning and was scolded for it by his teacher, who was grateful than America didn't have teens like HIM to count on to defend their shores.

-The character has been dropped completely from history, never mentioned again. Links to both Greek & Norse Mythology are of course trouble today, though could easily be explained.

-The first Marvel Boy was super-strong (7-ish tons) and super-fast, running at over 100 mph.

MARVEL BOY II (Martin Oksner Burns)
Created By:
????? & Bob Oksner
First Appearance: U.S.A. Comics #7 (Feb. 1943)
Role: Forgotten Golden Age Hero, Second Draft
Group Affiliations: None

-... Now this is a weird one. Marvel Boy here debuted in 1943, ALSO named "Martin Burns", and ALSO gaining his power to something related to Hercules. Like, it's too big of a coincidence to be an accident, which means that somebody was probably deliberately aping the work of Simon & Kirby (then working for DC's predecessors). So three-ish years later, here's another Marvel Boy.

-Martin Burns was a schoolboy who was on a field trip, when an Egyptian mummy containing a legendary hero named "Hercules" (WTF is it with these random uses of that name in other mythologies here? Surely people in the 1940s knew the difference) tipped over and fell on him- a vial of blood contained within shattered and mixed with Martin's own (due to a cut on his arm), imbuing him with superhuman strength. Wearing a dork-ass yellow costume with a red fin on his head and a blue cape (along with an "MB" medallion mimicking the original Marvel Boy's insignia), he fights... Nazi saboteurs. Only these ones were arsonists. He defeated "Von Blubber" and his men, trussing them up... but was late for school the next day, and chided by his teacher for his tardiness. Okay this is just weird. Not unheard of, though- I've read Archie Comics that were just redrawn from earlier comics of a different era.

-Marvel Boy II is just as strong as Marvel Boy I, and apparently immune to flames.

Mr. Jyn

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

MISTER JYN
Created By:
Tom Brevoort & Mike Kanterovich
First Appearance: Sleepwalker Holiday Special #1 (Jan. 1993)
Role: Weird Villain

-Trapped within a credit card, Mister Jyn (a plan on "Djinn", the root word for "Genie") appeared before a man down on his luck, offering him great power via wishes. Jyn did a mystic search of the world, realizing that only Rick Sheridan & Sleepwalker were latent threats to him, and summoned a "Mindmite" to attack Rick. Sleepwalker dealt with it and sought out Mr. Jyn as a result, battling him while he tormented his client's ex-wife and her new man. Being overpowered, Sleepwalker appeared to the client and asked him if all this was what he really wanted- when the man answered in the negative, Mr. Jyn lost his "psychic anchor" and reverted to his true demonic form. When Sleepwalker realized that Jyn was getting his powers from the Earthly dimension, he neutralized them by overloading Jyn with Christmas tree lights (SCIENCE!) and defeated the villain. The client threw away the card and tried to work on his own life. Later, a homeless man would pick up a random credit card and hear a familiar voice...

-Mr. Jyn was a powerful reality warper, able to make someone else's wishes come true. He could use Blasts, Snares, a Scrying Field that could look for magical threats all over the Earth, manipulate the elements, fly, and was low-end super-strong as well.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 15 (103)

-Marada the She-Wolf debuted in Epic Illustrated and even got her own Marvel Graphic Novel- her story was initially a Red Sonja tale done by Claremont & Bolton. Despite being highly proud of their tale, they soon found it mired in copywrite issues, and so the planned Bizarre Adventures tale was shelved. Eventually, they later got Archie Goodwin & Jim Shooter (in charge of Marvel's "Epic" creator-owned imprint) to publish the story, redesigning the character as "Marada the She-Wolf" instead of the "She-Devil With a Sword".

-Marada is the daughter of a Roman Emperor's firstborn daughter and a Prince who was enslaved by Rome- escaping the capital city as a girl, she was raised into a ferocious warrior. Despite swearing that no man would take her by force, she was raped by a demon (one of the N'Garai, who vexed the X-Men off-and-on) during a dark ritual. This turned the formerly ribald, powerful woman into a submissive, weak-willed person- she was taken in and helped by the good-natured Donal and Arianrhod, the latter of whom befriended her, while she soon fell for Donal.

-However, the aforementioned ritual had placed part of her soul into that of a demon, who soon took her form. The N'Garai invaded, slaying Donal and kidnapping Arianrhod- this set Marada off on a rampage- she soon gutted the demon who'd taken her. Eventually, she and her friend were captured by a Warrior-Queen sort (after they'd inadvertently joined some evil rebels), but joined with her after rescuing her from some mutinous soldiers. She was offered to stay with that queen (and since Claremont was writing, you KNOW what kind of an undercurrent was going on THERE), but left with Arianrhod. In her final story, she fell for, and was seduced by, a man named Jaffar, but he too was working for demons. However, having fallen for her himself, he betrayed his masters and spared her life. In a bittersweet ending, he sends her away, as his masters would discover his duplicity otherwise.

-The first parts of this episodic story, containing a lot of "And then..."-style shifts in setting and threats, was later reprinted in a Graphic Novel, being colorized and having a few pages added. It was then continued in two more 1985 Epic Illustrated issues. All are beautifully-drawn, probably taken from photographic reference, given how "glamorous" all the posing is, and how expressive the faces are (it's very "Good Greg Land"- meaning it's probably taken from photos the artist himself took rather than just being random porn tracing). There are a few links to the mainstream Marvel Universe (the N'Garai; Queen Ashake is also said to be an ancestor of Storm's), and Claremont intended to use Marada later, but never got around to it. She hasn't reappeared since the mid-80s. The stories come off as pretty dark, and Marada herself is easily victimized (usually through trickery), but tends to win in the end.

-Marada the She-Wolf is basically Red Sonja Lite, and is your standard "Sword-Wielding Goonsweeper", mowing down Mooks left and right.

Funny little thing, one of my old players (the same guy who lent me all X-Men comics I've ever read) had such an insane fascination with Chris Claremont's work that the bought the two collectors editions of Marada and even named a Werewolf PC after her.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

ARIANRHOD MacLLANLLWYR
Created By:
Chris Claremont & John Bolton
First Appearance: Epic Illustrated #10 (Feb. 1982)
Role: Magic Girl

-Arianrhod becomes Marada's ally in the various She-Wolf stories, using low-level Magic as an assist in battle. Her primary power is Healing, though she can also cast Mystical Bolts, control the elements slightly, and (badly) Teleport. She's sort of there to act as a more friendly, guileless innocent, I guess, often being upset by things.

I thought it was a rather well-done series, and quite possibly an influence on Xena -- reverse the heroines' hair colors, and you'll see what I mean. If Mr. Claremont tried to revisit these days, I suspect it would be as overwrought as most of his recent stuff, but for its time ...

But then again, I've always rather liked John Jakes' Brak the Barbarian which makes me a complete heretic in some people's estimations of sword and sorcery. :)

Total: Abilities: 82 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 75 / Defenses: 15 (203)

-You get an odd sense of comic book history when doing research for builds sometimes- as well as a greater understanding of certain things. Take Maelstrom- I always hated this dingus, because he looked skinny and stupid on his Marvel Card (Series III for the win!). But it's easy to see why Gruenwald used HIM of all people as the major Background Villain of his Quasar run- he'd invented the guy over a DECADE before for the Thing team-up book Marvel Two-In-One! Books like that are probably how The Gru earned his Jab-like lust for stupid Jobber Villains).

-Maelstrom was an Inhuman/Deviant hybrid (his father was exiled from Attilan for being a douchebag), who was trained by his father into being a brilliant geneticist. When his father is nearly killed in an experiment, Maelstrom swears to destroy the Inhuman race. Here he debuts, with a trio of super-powered minions (Helio, Phobius, and Gronk), taking out Hydro-Base and trying to get an "Anti-Terrigen" compound that will de-power all of Attilan. However, he and his Minions are defeated by The Thing and the aquatic hero Stingray, along with the Inhumans Gorgon & Karnak. Another minion of Maelstrom's, Deathurge, slaughters the trio of minions. The Thing departs with the Inhuman duo, where they team up with Black Bolt against the renewed assault of Maelstrom. Black Bolt intercepts and destroys the Anti-Terrigen Missile that Maelstrom had created, saving the day, and Thing weakens the villain with his own compound. In his final act, Maelstrom orders Deathurge to kill him.

-Years later, it would turn out that Maelstrom and his Minions had their minds transferred into fresh clone bodies. He tried to siphon the energy of the Eternals, but the Avengers defeat him. Again Deathurge kills him, and he returns in a new cloned body, trying to stop the Earth's rotation and absorb the kinetic energy. The Vision discovers a way to overload Maelstrom's power source, which renders him intangible- he floats away from the Earth.

-It was after this that Maelstrom became the signature villain of Mark Gruenwald's run on Quasar. Here, it's revealed that Maelstrom has become the worshipper of Oblivion, a Cosmic Entity that represents the destruction of everything. After numerous battles, Quasar finally defeats him, overloading Maelstrom with the Quantum Bands. When Maelstrom is revived, he discovers a son he never knew- Ransak- who would have been wiped from existence had he been victorious. Ashamed, he shrinks himself out of sight.

-Gruenwald tragically died not too long after Quasar, but Maelstrom returned again, facing the Great Lakes Avengers. He attempts to destroy the universe once more, even assuring victory by hiring BATROC'S BRIGADE to assist him, but Mr. Immortal successfully saves reality by telling Maelstrom that the "Grand Secret of the Universe" is eternal loneliness- Maelstrom kills himself. Doorman becomse the new Avatar of Oblivion. He showed up in modern times when Drax & Quasar were killed in 2000s "Space Stuff", procuring Phyla-Vell's Quantum Bands. However, the whole thing was a ruse for Phyla to kill the Dragon of the Moon, thus becoming the new Avatar of Death.

-Maelstrom kind of sits as this generic "Evil Space Villain" despite being rooted on Earth's alien cultures, with most of his post-1990 stuff being "I want to destroy EVERYTHING!" nonsense. He's thus a very one-note villain, but still used because his schtick involves scheming and plotting, not simple fisticuffs.

-Maelstrom is basically another Sebastian Shaw type, able to absorb attacks and throw them back at his opponents. But he's also RIDICULOUSLY high-level in terms of power output.
