Weird- I didn't pick that up in any bio-sites. Turns out that UncannyXMen.net has the full scoop. I always forget about that set- it never used to be that thorough.

Batgirl III wrote:Sinsear doesn't have nearly enough pouches, swords, and big honkin' guns to be a Nineties character! (looks at the 1993 first appearance date) Ah, so that explains it. He's an early Nineties character. The form was still in the prototype stage.
Most of the Ninetiesest characters were created in the earliest part of the decade. Sinsear eschews pouches for the almost-as-common "Excessive Weapons/Wires" look.

Vaguely reminds me of Fulford from the Killer Instinct game.

She hated him, then they kind of got into it again. Stuff got complicated, and they ended it. She's had a few boy-toys since then, but none bigger than...
Relationship (T'Challa)- Well they were the top two black characters in comics, so they kinda had to hook up, I guess. They were married for a bit, until people realized how uninteresting they were as a pair.
Responsibility (The Queen of Wakanda)- Ororo had the political responsibilities of royalty, for a while.
Responsibility (The X-Men)- As a major Team Leader, Storm has a lot of people to take care of.
Responsibility (The Morlocks)- For a long time, Storm was the overall leader of the Morlocks as well.
Rivalry (Callisto)- The ex-Morlock leader had a pretty big issue with the above Complication- she frequently taunted Storm, but also respected her as a warrior and demanded she take her role seriously.
Phobia (Enclosed Spaces)- Storm is claustrophobic, the result of a childhood trauma involving a building collapsing on her and her parents (leaving her orphaned), and will become crazed and desperate if she's enclosed in a small space- even places such as sewers make her uncomfortable.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 21 / Powers: 86 / Defenses: 18 (226)

Storm- A Great Example of Character Growth:
-Storm has come a long way. As the most overall powerful of the early Giant-Size crew (though Banshee was at first), she was depicted as somewhat of an Innocent Fanservice girl, calling bathing suits "absurd strips of cloth" and going nude half the time, but eventually the creative team got a hold of themselves and turned her into a passionate, fiery, worthy leader of the team, eventually taking that role from Cyclops every time he went away (which was often, especially by the mid-'80s). They did go a bit nuts in that era with the whole "Mohawked Lesbian Biker" thing, but overall, her character growth is one of the most prominent examples in the comic- more than probably anyone but Wolverine's shift from "smart-assed snarker" to "noble, thoughtful Samurai". It's so much the shame that later writers kind of ignored a lot of the passion and charm of the character, and turned her into Stoic Leader Guy (er, Lady).

Image

Early Storm:
-Storm, like I said, was a big-time "Innocent Fanservice Girl". She was passionate but quite innocent, and didn't really stand out in the early days aside from her visual- like most of the team, Dave Cockrum absolutely smashed one out of the park with a home run- almost every "Storm Design" calls back in some way to the black-costumed, white-haired, flowing-winged costume that Storm wears. And the 1970s-style Hip Boots & Swimsuit design? HELL TO THE YES! Storm, like Nightcrawler, was part of Cockrum's original designs for a Legion of Super-Heroes character (she was designed to be "feline-esque" at first), but he dropped her on this new "X-Men" thing instead. Between her and Nightcrawler, DC essentially just HANDED Marvel the instruments of their ultimate fame and success, which I should hope sticks to them a bit now. Sure, there were no hints that they could've ever hit it big back then (and the X-Men didn't REALLY take off till the Dark Phoenix Saga sales-wise, which is post-Cockrum anyways), but WOW.

-Chronologically, Storm was not the first black superhero, but the first FEMALE black superhero... and easily the most prominent and popular black character in the history of comic books, dwarfing the status of characters like Luke Cage, John Stewart, Steel, and any of the post-1980 Johnny-Come-Latelies that never stay in a book for more than a few years.

Storm as Leader:
-This was actually very gradual, and carefully-done. Cyclops often spent time away from the team for various reasons (Claremont has stated that his desire was to see Cyclops eventually retire permanently and move on with his life), and Storm was often left holding the reins of leadership, and actually doing very well for herself. That kind of thing happens when the writer working on all your stuff (Chris Claremont in this case) has a MASSIVE fetish for super-powerful, leather-clad women with attitude problems and a general disdain for authority- Storm had, by this point, developed a bit of a contrarian streak to people telling her what to do. He's likely not alone in that fetish, but man did Storm EVER get a push during his run. She was also given a long backstory- Claremont introduced ideas like her childhood in Cairo as a street-thief and pickpocket, after losing her parents in a collapsed building- an act that also left her with grippling Claustrophobia.

Image
"Storm had just lost most of her hair and she needed a hairstyle out of what was left. I did a number of portraits, all quite lovely and feminine. As a joke, I included a shot of her as Mr. T. You know, the kind of shot where they HAVE to go the other way. (X-Men editor Louise Simonson)'s response? 'They’re going to hang us whichever way we go. Let's commit the murder.' I argued it was a joke and a monstrously bad idea but, given my departure following 175 was set prior to beginning my run, my vote didn’t count. So I did what I could with what I had left... So we went with the Mohawk ...But once you get into the whole leather and stud thing it was a bad joke that got way out of hand."- Paul Smith
Storm as Biker:
-Paul Smith, who designed the "Mohawked Biker" Storm, has admitted that it was a joke gone way too far- Claremont earned his rep for Homoerotic storytelling through stories like the one where Storm went Leather Goddess. The whole thing happened during a trip to Japan, where Storm found a friend of Wolverine's- a short-haired spitfire named Yukio who lived freely and dangerously, with a joy for life that Storm desperately envied. And she WOULD NOT STOP talking about how awesome and life-loving and joyous this Yukio was, to the point of worship. To the point where she actively altered her entire "look" redesigning herself off of Yukio, complete with leather garb and a shorter, tough-looking haircut. This is the most homoerotic thing ever, and comes off like the middle act of a Lesbian Romance Film (most of which are AWESOME, by the way. Except this incarnation of the story didn't have the Evil Ex-Boyfriend Who Hates Her Newfound Homosexuality).

-Alas, what was meant to be seen as empowering and tough-ass back in the day now looks hilariously embarrassing (Nuklon of Infinity, Inc. gets the same thing, even once he became Atom Smasher- he'll never live down his time sporting a mohawk), and the worst kind of dated. Though oddly, now that they've brought it back and made it a bit longer in the back, it actually looks pretty elegant and hot now. Fashions change, fashions change...

-Kitty, who was looking at Storm like a "Cool Big Sister/Mother Figure", was horrified by the change, and it segued directly into...

De-Powered Storm:
-This happened when Biker Storm met up with Forge, a brilliant inventor who loved her from afar ("she is lovelier still", he said of her Biker Look). Storm was de-powered by a new device he'd whipped up for the government (he was under contract). And so Storm was De-Powered FOREVER, an act which ruined the blossoming relationship between the two (told in detail in the huge Lifedeath two-parter, which unfortunately comes off a bit pretentious and "blah" these days, rather than the probably-Love-Epic he and co-creator Barry Windsor-Smith were going for), and horrifying the young woman who'd loved and reveled in her powers for years. Thrown from the freedom of the winds, Storm was left the POWERLESS leader of the Mutant X-Men.

-The era where she was depowered was actually ridiculously long, lasting approximately THREE Essential Collections- something like 60 issues or four to five years of storytelling! But it cemented her as a strong Marvel character & leader- and one of the few instances where a creator made his Pet Character LESS powerful. All of that adds up to one of the greatest super-heroines out there, and one of the best black characters (if not THE best) in all of comics- Claremont's run on the X-books provided Marvel with absolute scads of awesome female characters, to the point where he single-handedly put them over on DC in that regard. DC has plenty of great ones (Black Canary, Barbara Gordon, etc.), but I think Marvel has them on both numbers and overall quality, and almost every bit of that is due to Claremont's work.

-During this time, Storm nearly killed Callisto, thus taking leadership of the Morlocks from her. She also defeated Cyclops in solo combat, thus earning the right to permanently lead the X-Men (as a result, Cyclops "retired" to Alaska with his wife and son)- though that was kind of an "iffy" win, with Storm taking off a distracted Cyclops' visor, meaning he couldn't win without opening his eyes, thus killing Storm and losing the contest.

ImageImage

Post-1990s Storm:
-Storm's kinda... bounced around alot since a certain point in time. When she got turned into a kid and then aged back up, she got her powers back and went long-haired, with Jim Lee giving her a SWANK new all-black outfit (I still miss the '70s-esque Cockrum outfit with the trademark hip boots, but then, hip boots ALWAYS WORK) and long hair again, and she was the X-Men's Gold Strike Force leader. Alas, without Claremont around, Storm's passion and bad-ass energy faded away (much like Rogue's did), and she became the "Cyclops" of her team- losing all personality and just kind of being all stoic and occasionally hammy with all of her "I HAVE THE FULL POWER OF THE STORM!!!!" nonsense. The X-Men cartoon used the WORST VOICE ACTING EVER in this regard, turning Storm into a colossal ham. Her relationship with Forge, which was always teased, eventually ended up with "They Won't" after they split up. For a couple of years, Storm was cast off from the main X-Books for Claremont's X-Treme X-Men run, a mostly-forgotten book that just featured his faves doing pointless stuff while searching for a Macguffin for several years. The reintroduction of Cyclops as a Team Leader for the team led to Storm first being a "Co-Leader" with her own squad... to generally being seen as the leader of the "B-Team" (or even worse, "C" & "D"-teams) of less-important characters, while Cyclops continued to be a major character.

-All of that really did a number on her character. Hell, but the time she hooked up with T'Challa for their We're Both Important Black People, Thus Our Wedding Is Pre-Ordained ceremony, she was as boring as it got, and that's part of why that relationship failed to gain traction with anybody. I mean, they were well-suited in their stoicness, but WOW does that fail to make for interesting stories. It was of course designed to get interest from black and female fans (because nothing attracts girls like the idea of a powerful, independent heroine settling down into a subserviant position with a ruling male). They were together for a bit, and apparently did some stuff, but ultimately they split up over A (vs) X- a silly bunch of books featuring X-Men (including Storm) versus the Avengers (including T'Challa). And Storm simply went back to the X-Books and did her thing leading the "less-important" titles.

Storm's Stats:
-Storm's a big-time expensive character, as I expected- she's an X-Man after all (they all have a great deal of power, yet are ALSO very skilled and good at fighting, as they've all had years and years of writers carefully powering them up with every passing issue). PL 11 best suits her, as she's arguably the most powerful X-Man of all, but has many exploitable weaknesses, the biggest of which being her low Toughness (she's PL 7 defensively). It's part of what I like about Marvel comics- the X-Men can be VERY powerful, but even someone as mighty as Storm has been taken out by a frickin' BYSTANDER throwing a brick at her head. A Glass Cannon to the extreme. Her powers are quite vast- three Area Damage effects, a standard Blast (Indirect- ie. from above), two Wind Storms, Fog, Wind (Features 2), Move Object, Weather Immunity & Detection, and Flight. Her ideal form in combat is to distract all the enemies with her Environment, hamper movements, Blasts and Area Effects while giving commands, allowing the rest of the team to mop up.

-Storm may just have one of the best power-sets in all of comics, too- visually-extraordinary, prone to great Power Feats and Great Showings, and lets her fight in a huge weight class... but she's as vulnerable as the next person, so she's not as invulnerable as oh-so-many Flying Bricks and Powerhouses. She's really up there with Spider-Man in terms of peopl who are just PERFECT in terms of powers.

Image

See, now HERE the look is awesome- it's just a matter of style, length and fashion... I think the '80s just ruined sexiness for EVERYTHING.

-De-Powered Storm is a whole different animal. She's left without her mutant powers, but makes do with her fists and her skills, gaining in almost every other category as a result. This Storm is stronger, tougher & faster than she ever was, has more Combat Advantages, and specializes in her Skills even more. It might seem odd that "modern" Storm loses alot of these gifts once her powers return, but really, when being a fighter is ALL YOU HAVE, you're going to focus much more on it. With her powers back, she'll have less time for them, and can focus back on her Weather Control. This storm is PL 7.5 offensively, PL 9 defensively.

Wasn't/Isn't Storm married to T'Challa? I haven't read many comics in six years or more.

They haven't been a couple since they broke up during Avengers vs X-Men back in 2012 (IIRC). I've seen the occasional comic where they meet and talk to each other, but yeah, no more marriage.

I think I read somewhere that the reason Storm went punk-mohawk in the 1980's is because her essential tie to the earth had been broken, from being away in space (I can't remember---were the X-Men away in space, they might have been with the Brood and Binary storylines?).

This changed her core and how her powers manifested supposedly.

Yep, that's about when, yeah. Issues 154-166, if I recall, were the issues with the Starjammers and Brood.
It's around the time I got into X-Men, issue 165 with the big fight on the Brood world. Paul Smith's first issue (165-175, except for the wedding of Cyclops to Maddie Pryor -- it includes the famous Kitty opener "Professor Xavier Is a Jerk!" scene).

sorry I may be one of the few but I hated the Mohawk look on her.

Wow, do I ever feel like a dumb@$$. I answered the question in the other thread about Storm's Dynamic Array, had that question about her and T'Challa pop into my head and came here and posted it without reading the entry. Shoulda RTFM....

No, it seems to be generally pretty unpopular. Just Claremont finding butch chicks hot and wanting the "Mohawked Biker" thing to be her look. I would think that if he wanted to change it back, he could have. It's probably Storm's most-distinctive, but most-disliked, look.

Sister Salvation

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

SISTER SALVATION:
-Sister Salvation is a rarely-seen character appearing in Wolverine- a nun and possible Mutant who's made it her goal to heal others. I think she lost her powers stopping some kind of disease-carrying menace called Spore, because she damaged her hands doing so, and seemed saddened by the loss. ComicVine says she died in a 2016 Uncanny X-Men issue.

I'd figured Storm for being about a PL 12 anyway, just based on what I've picked up from years of reading builds like these
