-LOL, my prior Aquaman JLU build is so old that I go into a two-paragraph rant about how dumb Aquaman is and how he'll never be made cool or interesting, and so DC should stop trying because even Peter David couldn't remove him as a pop culture joke. And then Hollywood figures out that you can stick some attractive man in the costume and then make 70% of what a Marvel movie does, and now Aquaman is cool. In that one movie. I mean, the comics are probably still just scraping by, but whatever.

-When Aquaman made his mandatory appearance in Justice League, the showrunners had some decisions to make- they didn't want him on the team, they wanted an Atlantis story (even though "Atlantis Is Boring"), and they had to make up for the fact that Aquaman was one of pop culture's biggest recurring jokes, as "The Guy Who Talks To Fish". As this was on the heels of the Peter David "I got my hand eaten so have a hook and a beard now" Aquaman, they were left with a more badass-looking, grumpy version, so at least they could have him be a gruff asshole most of the time, giving them more to work with in terms of conflict.

-JLU's Aquaman ended up being in some pretty good stuff, and came off way better than the comics version- they played up the "overly-serious ass" part of his personality, and gave him a MUCH more bad-ass reason to lose his hand (he willingly cut off his own hand to save his son's life... versus the guy who had it eaten by piranhas in the comics). Portrayed as the grumpy xenophobe that Peter David re-wrote him as (and Grant Morrison furthered in his own JLA run), he was hard to deal with, but unquestionably bad-ass. He even beat Wonder Woman once, and it wasn't supposed to be funny (he was overpowered, but cleverly got her into the water, where she couldn't breathe). And then he called off Icthultu's legions of alien monsters by getting his whale & shark allies to kill them all as they came through the portal- pretty much the most incredible version of "He Talks to Fish" possible to make it NOT look like a joke (and in a later episode, he summoned an actual Sea Monster).

-Aquaman showed up with the League in a handful of JLU adventures, teaming up with Dr. Fate & Solomon Grundy as a riff on Marvel's Defenders, and helping the main team defeat the Ultimen, giving him ANOTHER bad-ass feat (Downpour turns into a tidal wave and blasts him- Aquaman just stands there and is like "King of the SEAS, remember?"). However, a similar circumstance to the "Bat-Embargo" that removed all Bat-related characters from the franchise also befell the creators when a studio gained the rights to the TV version of Aquaman (a Pilot episode was made, but it didn't take), and so the DCAU was no longer allowed to use him or any of his characters- this led to Aquaman disappearing from the show for good, and Black Manta being turned into "Devil Ray" instead.

-A PL 11 powerhouse, Aquaman has all kinds of advantages. He's a physical demon who's quite accurate, has a lethal hook hand with a few other properties, and he can communicate with all forms of sea life. It's not really Animal Control, but he's never really shown as having TROUBLE getting any sea monsters to obey his commands. They just kinda do it without a fuss because of his job, which I guess is part of his Benefit (King of the Seas) package- I really dislike the "Official" DCA build making it a Summon effect- that means Aquaman could summon whatever he wanted right next to him in a pool or a tub. And it's kind of an ugly way to showcase the "stuff just shows up when he calls" effect. And like Devil Ray, he's much more dangerous in the water, easily equaling the Big Seven of the Justice League in that manner. As as Downpour of the Ultimen found out, hitting him with a Water Cannon just isn't going to work.

About the Performer: Scott Rummell is a vocal performer who actually mostly does movie trailers and voiceovers for network TV. On "JLU", he played Aquaman, but it's among his only acting credits.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 65 / Defenses: 14 (138)

-Tala wasn't a big character at first, basically being Cadmus' go-to magic person whom I've NEVER heard of in the comics. DC ain't that big on magic masters usually, so she must be REALLY minor (turns out she's a Phantom Stranger foe who is more or less a succubus/Hell Princess type of character who beguiles mortals). She tried (and failed) to control The Annihilator, and it got controlled by Faust instead. She showed up again out of nowhere to assist Grodd (then Luthor, when he performed his coup) and his Secret Society, suddenly becoming a major character and confidante type, getting alot of funny gags based off of her trying (and failing) to soothe the egomaniacal Lexy-Baby. Here, she was more or less shown to be the type of girl who gravitates to male authority figures and makes herself available to them, going for alpha-types. The only hint that she didn't care it came when she was disappointed at Lex's return- turns out that Flash-In-Lex's-Body is much more, um, attentive, to her needs. Tala ended up dying in one of the most horrific manners ever, being literally torn to pieces in Luthor's Gathering Machine, trying to get pieces of Brainiac back together.

-Tala's not really built for combat, though she can be quite handy. Under-pointed, she's more useful as a Mass Teleporter or potion/spell-creator than anyone on the battlefield, where she's stuck using either the Blast or the Force Field, & never both, making her a Glass Cannon mixed with a Slow Glacier.

About the Performer: Yet ANOTHER Whedonverse alum on this show, Juliet Landau played Drusilla on both "Buffy" and "Angel", being Joss Whedon's ideal woman- a slender ballerina. She was also in "Ed Wood" as Loretta King, and mostly does voice acting these days (being in her 50s). She played Tala as a very Eastern European kind of vamp, and also played a similar rolel with the American villainess Plastique.

Complications:
Motivation (Salvation)- Boston Brand fights to "even the scales" and go on to his final reward. However, due to circumstances in his life, he never quite makes it.
Relationship (The Monks of Nanda Parbat)
Power Loss (Magic)- Boston Brand is often visible to those with magical senses, and his Insubstantiality fails against them as well.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 120 / Defenses: 13 (168)

-Boston Brand is much like the "Doom Patrol Fandom" thing I often speak of, in that there's always some fan out there who wants to see his return, or some new writer who must've read Showcase or something back in the before-time (in the long, long ago) and wants to work on the guy, but his books always sell for crap and don't see any success (ie. the vocal fanbase outstrips the actual fanbase). I mean, a ghostly guy who floats around solving passing murders and stuff is kind of the thing for a long-running TV series (heck, Pushing Daisies, one of the best TV shows I've ever seen, is very close to that concept), and even then it's pretty iffy- it's a bag of ass of an idea for a comic book.

-Of course, this is JLU, where you get to see the less-successful characters in big showcasings for just ONE episode, so you get to see all that's cool and interesting about them! So Deadman showed up, possessed Superman & Wonder Woman for a bit to fight the Secret Society (who had "killed" the monks at the temple in which he was staying), and he jumped into Batman's body at the last second to save the day against Devil Ray, killing the villain and putting the scales "out of balance" again (Eastern Mysticism, you see, ALWAYS sells books!... in Opposite Land, that is). So yeah. Just not a big fan of the concept. But Batman's reaction to his own body having been used as a vessel to use A GUN to kill someone was pretty epic.

-Deadman's a fairly simple little build if you just copy off of the DC Adventures boo-- I MEAN THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT ALL HIS POWERS, but now I just ignore all that and put in the "Possession" Power THEY SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE MADE AVAILABLE. He's a ghost (standard lack of Stamina & gains Immunities), he can float, he can't be seen or heard, and he can't be touched either. Then he can Possess people. He's pretty much a walking Game Breaker with all that stuff on him, but he's not meant for campaign use (unless your life REALLY sucks and it's just you and the GM playing), since he can't be hurt by most anything or seen by anyone. Except mystic-types like his Monk Master (and probably Tala or something). I gave him lower accuracy and REALLY high Affliction, since the guy can just pop into targets as mighty as Wonder Woman, Batman or Superman without even hesitating- their Will Saves alone should handily reflect him. I left out some stuff from the "official" build, mainly because it never saw play in the episode I saw.

About the Performer: Deadman was played by the same guy who voiced Atomic Skull later on- probably just to get double the use out of the performer.

The Ultimen

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE ULTIMEN:
-Now on to The Ultimen! A group of teenage meta-humans secretly created & supplied with false memories by Cadmus to directly oppose the Justice League in case things ever went bad. They found out about it (and discovered they were dying), and so they decided to go nuts and wreck some stuff as revenge. The League got called in, and Dragon decided that the best way to make their lives matter would be to KILL THEM. I should point out their cellular degeneration was making them crazy by this point.

Complications:
Responsibility (Cadmus Operatives)

- Wind Dragon himself was a cocky, smarmy leader that was thoroughly unlikeable, and based off of Samurai of the Super Friends international team of stereotypes. It took me not too much time to figure out the homages of the Ultimen to the Stereotype Squadron, mainly because the Zan & Jayna characters were really obvious.

-Wind Dragon is like a baby Red Tornado, with a few extra feats (Split Attack, Cold Environments), and some charisma. Like most one-episode-only characters, he's not packing a lot of Skills or Advantages, so he comes out way cheaper. When the Ultimen were cloned and attacked the Watchtower en masse, dozens of these guys went down in droves. Much less capable than their initial versions, so those "dummy plug" variants (totally loyal), are basically minus all Skills and are much worse in combat, becoming PL 8-9 adversaries. They hit pretty hard, but they seem to be practically under the Minion Rules as far as their Toughness goes. They fail a save, they go down.

About the Performer: A prominent "Jackie Chan Imposter", James Sie has a very similar voice to Chan's, enough that he played him in "The Jackie Chan Adventures" cartoon series. He replaced Chan as Master Monkey in the "Kung Fu Panda" TV series as well. He was Kwan in "Danny Phantom" as well, showing that he typically plays a lot of Asian characters.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 51 / Defenses: 16 (128)

-Juice was the guy who didn't talk much, since Wind Dragon & Longshadow got all the characterization, and the Twins were the emotional ones. Based off of Black Vulcan (himself a copy of Black Lightning- note to comic book creators: Don't maintain a license for your characters if you ever want to get toys or cartoons featuring them made), he was a generic energy user. He had BY FAR the worst showing of the entire group, jobbing to Batman in about three seconds by hitting water. Poor electrical guys.

-Juice has a really good power with his Electrical Body, teleporting along metallic surfaces and blasting everyone he comes into contact with that way, or alternatively, just blasting the crap out of them. Not a bad power-set, just very limited, and his lack of speech makes his Skills & Feats even harder to nail down.

About the Performer: Juice was performed by an uncredited C.C.H. Pounder (the voice of Amanda Waller), electronically-altered. He didn't say much.

I feel so vindicated that Aquaman has been revitalized. Even as great as Momoa’s Aquaman take is, I still like the Brave and the Bold cartoon version better and this take was great as well. I still want to kick ABC I the nuts for what they did to him in Super Friends.

-Shifter was a variant on Jayna from the Super Friends, and was my big clue as to whom these guys were reprenting (I subsequently did a double take and starting laughing my ass off- come on, THOSE GUYS done in a serious context?). Of course, Shapeshifting to Animals is a pretty damn awesome power, so when played straight, she's actually quite effective. Her job other than be the physical threat was to cry a bunch and get upset about things.

-Pretty much like Beast Boy with her powerful assortment of alternate forms to take, the most powerful of which being Sea Monster & Tyrannosaurus Rex (that's oddly aquatic). This makes her a lethal but inaccurate foe in most incarnations, though most Leaguers would find a Lion or something pretty dangerous as well. Shapeshift is such an expensive power that you can build an entire character with minor stats in everything around it, and still have them be pretty effective.

About the Performer: Grey DeLisle plays both twins, and is a voice acting legend in her own right, playing the classic Azula in "Avatar: The Last Airbender" for a number of years. Her roles are extremely varied, going from the annoying babysitter in "The Fairly Oddparents", to the sociopathic monster Azula, to children, to Daphne Blake in the modern "Scooby-Doo" stuff. While playing a number of big roles, she has a versatile enough voice that she plays a LOT of one-offs and "Additional Voices"- often multiple times on the same show! She's played Friends & Enemies Of the Week on "Sofia the First", "Elena of Avalor", and other shows!

-Downpour was Zan, and unlike the "SuperFriends" cast-member, was actually a useful and powerful super-character. See, Zan was usually reduced to being something stupid like a bucket of water, or an ice tricycle (not making that one up) or stilts (that either- he even decided to WALK THROUGH LAVA like that!). This one is thankfully from modern times, and thus knows the power of having a couple water-cannons coming out of your arms, not to mention he knows the usefulness of turning into a moveable, drowning ball of water. Of course, he did the dumbest thing ever in "JLU" and fought AQUAMAN, the one guy guaranteed to be resilient against his attacks, then turned human long enough to get punched out.

-Quite powerful, but as limited as most of the others, Downpour has a REALLY wide effect range, capable of filling out an entire room with his own water-body, as well as being able to fire giant water jets in Area Effects, knock people back, drown them, etc. The Dispersal Flaw of Growth is ideal for these types, as turning into a gigantic body of water in an enclosed space, while you yourself can't drown, is a rather effective way to take some people out.

I feel so vindicated that Aquaman has been revitalized. Even as great as Momoa’s Aquaman take is, I still like the Brave and the Bold cartoon version better and this take was great as well. I still want to kick ABC I the nuts for what they did to him in Super Friends.
Oh yeah- that cartoon is along with the Green Lantern movie as the perfect showcase that a high-profile TV show or movie (which is typically seen by many more people than read comic books, especially NOW) can be more disastrous than anything for a character. MILLIONS of children saw Super Friends and their comically-useless Aquaman- I didn't think the character was ever going to recover.

I actually loved the take on Zan and Jayna in JLU. they showed those characters can be taken seriously and made into right scary characters when done right.

Motivation (The Justice League)- Unlike his teammates, Longshadow wants to join the Justice League, and doesn't join his partners in making fun of them.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 13 (140)

-Longshadow was the "Nice Guy" of his team, the most unselfish and unchildish Ultiman- one who only wanted to join the Justice League since day one. Problem was, day one was only a year ago, and his beloved parents were just actors. The noble "Apache Chief" guy with the growing powers got to spend his last days as a League member like he wanted, as his cellular degeneration hit its peak, and he soon died.

-Longshadow is basically a variant of my Atom Smasher build, being a Growth 14 super-heavyweight. Like most growing guys, his Achilles Heel is his Defense, as he's as easy to hit as a bystander, but 'only' +15 Toughness. He's still got a huge +17 Damage strike, and more Skills than his fellows (it pays to be the nice, non-want-to-punch-him-in-the-face guy). And yeah, his hearing is apparently real good, as he could hear a conversation going on in a separate room when no one else could.

-The incident where he grew a little bigger than Giganta and basically scared her off is a little weird, though. She gave up rather than fight him, despite being powerful enough to rock Wonder Woman or Superman one-on-one. Longshadow notably was very strong, but never fought the Leaguers enough to get a hint of his abilities. His later Clones were jobbers like the rest of the Ultimen, going down in droves compared to the real things' earlier performance. One even lost to a trio of borderline-human heroes! I guess Giganta just failed her Will Save that day.

About the Performer: Gregg Rainwater is an actor of Native American descent, and plays a lot of roles like that (including backgrounder T.Hawk in the "Street Fighter" feature film). You'll see him in one-offs in "Gargoyles", "Young Justice" (as Apache Chief), and other shows as well. He's currently an Art Director on many shows, like "American Idol".

-Mongul is a Superman foe of some repute, most-famous for the classic story "For The Man Who Has Everything", featuring him ensnaring Supes with the Black Mercy, a plant that fed off a person's life force while forcing them to endure a perfect dream world of their own envisioning, making it near-impossible to break free. "It must have been like tearing off your OWN ARM..." says Mongul coldly, as he taunts Superman, who just gave up a wonderful life with his son on a reborn Krypton to save his friends. Superman just says "BURN..." and lights the dude's chest on fire. This story was an Alan Moore classic, and basically defined the character... so of course DC f*cked it all up and basically ignored the guy afterwards, throwing him out as some generic loser after that. Cripes, they even had him DEMOLISHED by Neron, DC's own rip-off of Marvel's Mephisto. Lame, DC Comics... Lame.

-Mongul's son (who has basically just co-opted every part of daddy, right down to the name) joined Hal Jordan's rogues' gallery following the destruction of Coast City, and he's kind of leaned that way after various storylines (and crappy sister characters to kill off). This Mongul is actually the SON of the first, but is the exact same in all respects (ie. the writers didn't want to resurrect him, but wanted Mongul back anyways), and in the Green Lantern Corps book, he acquired a Yellow Power Ring, and immediately went to work altering the Sinestro Corps in his own image. He murdered a half-dozen Yellow Boys, stealing all their Rings in the process, and even deformed Arkillo in melee combat, just so he could attain full power. But then Sinestro returned from prison with Hal Jordan & Carol Ferris in tow, revealed he controlled ALL the Yellow Rings, and went medieval on Mongul, blasting holes in him from the inside out, and entrapping him inside the Qwardian Power Battery.

-The Mongul of JLU is pretty much Moore's Mongul combined with the later Mongul, as he was the ruler of WarWorld, a planet dominated by gladatorial fights to distract the populace from their crappy lives (all Emperor of Rome style), but then they just copied the "Man Who Has Everything" story to the extreme on JLU, which was MUCH more successful. It made Mongul look clever and utterly cruel (he taunts the Man of Steel for having to give up his life's greatest dream- "it must have been like tearing off your own ARM..."). The only problem was that it kind of made Wonder Woman look weaker, as in the original story Diana was clearly below Mongul in power, and pretty much fought herself to near-death just to hold him off. She lasted a good long time, but it was basically considered "no kidding" to say that Superman was better. And at that point in '80s DCU, he WAS. But for the show, it made Diana look a bit weaker than usual, though made a REALLY good showing of her willpower and ingenuity (ending up in the Weapons Room of the Fortress of Solitude, she started dishing out the heavy laser beams). Ultimately, Mongul is defeated by his own weapon- Superman throwing the Black Mercy flower onto him- we never see him recover.

-Mongul is obviously high-powered, seeing as how he can take on Superman on an even keel, and basically take everything Wonder Woman can dish out as a minor inconvenience. Needless to say, he's a beast, and is basically Superman-Extreme, given higher Strength but worse Fighting ability (Diana was able to trounce him in accuracy, and he was noticeably slower than Supes). Determining side-powers might be tough, since he seems to have some regenerative powers (Bzzd blew holes in him from the inside-out in the comics, as did Sinestro, and he survived both attacks), but otherwise must just be super-tough, since his cartoon version was basically Big Strong Guy Who Is Tough. He's basically a Powerhouse package on top of a genius with whatever equipment you need.

-If you want to throw in what a Black Mercy can do, make it a high-toughness (lasers do almost no damage, and it Regenerates) creature with good Grappling ability, and a REALLY powerful Affliction effect. Like Affliction 18 (Will; Dazed & Hindered/Stunned & Defenseless/Incapacitated) (Extras: Continuous +3) (Flaws: Grab-Based) powerful. Superman gave up almost everything he ever wanted to make the attack, and poor Batman had to watch his father at first defeat Joe Chill in that dark alleyway all those years ago, only to watch him murdered all over again.

About the Performer: Eric Roberts is vastly more well-known for being the brother of Julia Roberts and father of Emma Roberts than anything he's done in his own career, though he's won some awards and done okay. He got an Oscar nomination for "Runaway Train" in 1985, for example. Basically, he's in a crapload of supporting roles. He was in writer Ken Levine's sitcom "Less Than Perfect" for three years (Ken, whose blog I follow, goes on about how it was a Little Show That Could, but was ultimately ruined by executive meddling and died). He's also a notorious screw-up and shitbag, being arrested multiple times for drug-related assaults on people, including his (now ex-) wife. Though he played Mongul really well- in a world without Michael Ironside's Darkseid, he could have made a great Big Bad.

Vulnerable (Easy to Hit)- When fighting against a Full-Sized Micron, any character may be treated as having the Power Attack Advantage, allowing them to go +5 to damage. He's such an big target that all his vulnerable spots are enormous.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 73 / Defenses: 15 (152)

-Micron only talked in his first episode (voiced by Wayne Brady of all people), and was basically the first victim of Starro-controlled Superman. He's basically a mix of Atom & Atom-Smasher, effectively becoming a bit like Hank Pym, minus the suck.

About the Performer: Wayne Brady is famous mostly for his improv career, based off of being one of the most popular acts on the American version of "Whose Line Is It, Anyway?" (he was briefly on the original British-made version). There, his improvised songs became a highlight of the end of each show. Though Ryan Stiles & Colin Mochrie got the lion's share of the "funny" credit, Brady was himself a bit of a great find, and made a career out of it. A talk show soon followed, but only lasted for two years- a minor acting career also took place, where he got recognized so much as the "Safest Black Comedian" that Dave Chappelle made a famous sketch out of it being a front for Brady as a violent, murderous thug and pimp. I saw his improv show in Las Vegas once, and it was pretty good, if a bit short (barely a half an hour, and he spends the last five minutes doing stuff from his album... which he was selling at the time)- these things involve the audience, and you'd better hope you get funny people (the guy doing sound effects barely wanted to do it, which makes you wonder why he volunteered). He's currently the host of "Let's Make a Deal".
