-Sunstroke is a weird character, popping up out of nowhere and claiming to have "created himself" (no writer ever bothered to explain his origins). He joined Dominus's Desert Dwellers (the others being created by the sentient computer), and harassed the Avengers West Coast before immediately falling into the Jobber Villain trap, soon being remembered only by guys like Mark Gruenwald, and later, whichever writers were in charge of throwing background faces into The Hood's super-villain army. He was also on the Cowl's Jobber-filled Masters of Evil squad, getting trounced easily by Moonstone. His outfit is... unique- a big flared Banshee-styled set of wings with a big '70s cowl, combined with a white & gold costume... it's hard to believe he's from the late '80s.
-Sunstroke is a PL 10 Dazzle-based guy (it's his one gimmick, and Dazzles tend to be high-rank), but PL 8 as a Blaster, and notably weak on defense, like most Jobbers.

Complications:
Relationship (Vulcan)- The two were close, which makes Vulcan's disappearance and evil-turn all the more horrible.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 48 / Defenses: 17 (124)

-Darwin was part of a mystery "Lost X-Men" team that got sent to deal with Krakoa BEFORE the Giant-Size team ever did, being defeated in the attempt (two lived in comas, two died). The story became quickly notorious for both foisting the horrible Vulcan upon the world, and for making Professor X add yet ANOTHER prominent "I'm actually an evil dick" moment to his insidious abbatoir of failure. I'm still shocked that was ED BRUBAKER of all people- a guy who had the best Captain America run ever made THAT?

-In any case, Darwin's another Reactive Evolver (kinda like Doomsday or Lifeguard, also an X-Man), which is getting to be a more generic power these days. Not much else to him, really. He was successfully revived after Vulcan returned from near-death, and joined the X-Men in outer space, attempting to halt Vulcan's crazed space journey. They failed, and Vulcan was soon crowned Shi'ar Majestor, leaving Darwin to become "Just Another X-Man" on Earth, where he was a background guy in a few stories before Peter David took pity on how under-utilized he was and threw him into X-Factor Investigations, an "Island of Misfit Toys" book. There, he develops a crush on Monet, but quits the team after temporarily gaining "Death God" powers to counter the powers of Hela- the experience shocks his system, and he mentally can't deal with it. Hearing voices in his head from his time as a God, Darwin believes that Wolfsbane's son Tier will destroy the world, and so he's compelled to kill the wolf-child. He is cast down by Rictor (an X-Factor member at the time), and continues to hunt Tier as of his last Wikipedia update. So basically, Darwin is a character with an increasingly-common power-set with no discernable personality type or reason to exist, but was shoved onto a book "just because" and now writers kind of have to either deal with him or toss him into limbo like that.

-Of course, he was also in X-Men: The First Class, a neat Retcon movie (that featured Jennifer Lawrence BEFORE The Hollywood Hype Machine started its public work on making her a new A-Lister- but after it'd decided to do it). Alas, he was chosen as The Sacrificial Buddy, and also enacted the old chestnut of "The Black Dude Always Dies First"- somehow being chosen to be randomly killed by Sebastian Shaw.

-"Adaptation" (Limited Reaction Variable) is quite effective. He'll develop immunity to fire AS he's being blasted by a Fire Guy, or Armour to deflect blows, makes up most of this guy's capability in battle. He's not a skilled character, just someone who can pop a few points here or there defensively, making him both really hard to hit and really hard to HURT, making his PL only Defensively. The best use of his powers BY FAR is the time he faced off against Full-Blown Pissed-Off World War Hulk... his body decided the safest adaptation would be to GET HIM AWAY FROM THIS MONSTER REALLY FREAKING FAST... and so he Teleported miles away before he could be punched.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 75 / Defenses: 11 (153)

-Doctor Sun (no relation to the Chinese politician of old) is a vampiric cyborg who was created for The Tomb of Dracula, and ended up bouncing around in the comics for a bit until disappearing for good in 1980- his short six-year run means that he just dealt with '70s heroes like the Fantastic Four & The Man Called Nova (in a Byrne-drawn FF arc). He was a Chinese scientist who discovered a way to keep brains alive outside of the human body- a political enemy arranged to have him executed and subjected to his own process. As such, he became a Killer Cyborg, gained psionic powers and killed a lot of people.

-He fought Dracula a number of times (their mutual need for blood led him to realize that teaming up with vampires would help him rule the world)- even KILLING him once (Drac was weakened and incinerated), but the bastard just keeps on reviving (Drac's enemies were forced to resurrect him to fight Sun, who now had all of Dracula's abilities and was a bigger threat). He faked his death against Dracula and never saw him again. Dr. Sun then got mixed up with the FF & Nova for a while during their battle with The Sphinx & Terrax, and turned on the FF by turning their headquarters on them, but he was presumed dead after an explosion caused by H.E.R.B.I.E. He has yet to reappear, over thirty years later.

-Doctor Sun is a weird sort, and was able to handle Dracula himself back in the day (though only with careful planning, high tech and minions), though seems to have become just a standard Strong Robot-type of character, albeit with Mind Control and a Blast. He's also a super-smart scientist.

Motivation (Money)- Deadpool has been known to switch sides mid-assignment for cash.
Relationship (Bea Arthur)- Wade Wilson has only one true love.
Relationship (Siryn)- Next to his beloved Bea, the beautiful Irish lass Theresa Cassidy is his most-beloved relation. Her feelings for him are more complicated, as she's usually hooked up with other fellows.
Relationship (Copycat)- Vanessa Carlyle was another stooge of the crimelord Tolliver, and was dating Wilson for a long time. Since both are amoral monsters, it doesn't work out well, and they've often tried to kill each other.

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 52--26 / Advantages: 34 / Powers: 42 / Defenses: 18 (198)

Deadpool- The Biggest New Character of the Past Thirty Years? Yeah, Actually!:
-Jesus, who could have ever predicted the success of THIS guy? A borderline one-off threat who was defeated in his very first appearance by a run-in from ANOTHER debuting character (Domino), then humiliated, Deadpool struck a chord with readers because writer Fabian Nicieza gave him a funny, irreverent dialogue style, making him stand out from the ultra-serious, grimacing badasses that populated most of Liefeld's work. That Deadpool had one of Liefeld's best designs (using the "eyepatch" things he'd share with Domino & Wildside, but a bicolored costume that was Toyetic AND stylish) didn't hurt. So fans dug him and wanted to see more... but I was thinking "recurring bad guy" and "maybe a Limited Series" (his contemporaries include forgotten nobodies like Gideon, Crule, The Mutant Liberation Front, and minor X-characters like Domino and Feral. Even Shatterstar went forgotten for a long time) not... THIS.

Deadpool's Debut:
-Wade Wilson debuted as a Deathstroke knock-off (he's even called Wade, versus Slade), and was one of a dozen characters introduced who had backstory with the new character, Rob Liefeld's Cable. Cable had a "Poochie"-level push, with everyone suddenly knowing this mysterious bada-ass, and old enemies popping out of the woodwork. Deadpool was the personal assassin of Mr. Tolliver, a generic crimelord whose face we never saw (turned out to be Cable's son from the future), and was sent to kill Cable. He easily defeated Shatterstar, which was odd since that was ANOTHER beloved newbie that Liefeld wanted to push (Wade even talked smack when Shatty-buns declared his joy at facing an equal- "-- and we AIN'T EQUALS!"), faced down Cable... and got shot in the back by Domino, who had snuck up behind him. Oh, and SHE had a past with Cable, too!

-Deadpool was shipped back to Tolliver, and disappeared for a few months, popping up when New Mutants turned into X-Force- my introduction to the character had me laughing my ass off, when he arrived to find a nearly fatally-injured Black Tom Cassidy at the bottom of the World Trade Center building, and dragged him off for his bosses, complaining "and stop bleeding on me". He later appeared to fight Cable and prevent him from rescuing the REAL Domino (the original we saw was actually Wade's girlfriend, whom Deadpool literally stabbed in the back), but had his entire back blown apart our "damsel in distress" when she was freed. This all painted Deadpool as a funny, but murderous, immoral bastard who was accessory to kidnapping and tried to murder his ex.

Deadpool Gets Popular:
-Liefeld had long since departed Marvel, but Greg Capullo drew him very well, and Wade was a hit with readers. When Copycat (Wade's ex and the fake Domino) went into hiding, Deadpool hunted her, being shot by Domino after he killed Copycat's best friend. Curiously, despite many fans being into him (the letters page had more Deadpool stuff than half the X-Force characters), they REALLY didn't push him too hard. In fact, this happened quite a lot during the 1990s- they would have a hot character and just wouldn't pull the trigger on them, seemingly witholding them from the fans- the same thing happened to Magik (fans were DESPERATE for Illyana to come back... instead they killed her) and Blink (a popular early-fatality of the Generation-X concept, dying to save her fellow young mutants' lives). It was stubborn and weird. Finally, we received a Deadpool Limited Series in 1994, also written by Nicieza, who'd taken a liking the character, and drawn by some guy named Joe Madureira. This did well enough, and it lead to Joe Kelly writing the character's ongoing in 1997, which gave him ANOTHER shift.

Deadpool Breaks the Fourth Wall:
-Deadpool, like She-Hulk before him, would now break the FOURTH WALL, being clearly aware that he was in a comic book, and saying so. However, because he was a lunatic, this was easily passed off by others. And the book went over REALLY well- the comedy was perfect since it was an anarchic book anyhow. Deadpool found a best friend/guy to mock in the nerdy Weasel, ripped on an old lady named Blind Al, whom he'd kidnapped and kept trapped in his home, and more. The book was a mix of angst and pop culture gags, with Deadpool mocking the comics industry itself. The former murderous assassin was now a "Tee-hee, I KILL PEOPLE!" gag, usually now focused on killing exceptionally EVIL people, so it was funny. The best one was naturally the issue where he went back in time to live a day in the life of Peter Parker (complete with old John Romita art from an old Spider-Man issue!), making fun of the trademark Osborn Hair, and telling Aunt May that he was going through puberty. Blind Al's inferring that Mary-Jane was on crack was grand, too.

-Christopher Priest & Gail Simone would take over the book, extending the gag even further (Simone introduced the regular "little yellow boxes" which Wade would argue with). Though it had a loud fanbase, it alas had "Doom Patrol" tendencies, and so the book was cancelled and relaunched as Agent X, featuring other side X-Characters. Deadpool's run was thus kind of over by the early 2000s.

Deadpool Returns:
-Nicieza returned to the character with Cable & Deadpool, featuring a ton of arguments, the two being "broken people" (Fabian mentioned this as a deliberate thing he attempted at a panel I attended- he more or less had the book dumped on him, so needed to find SOME angle), and Wade having something of a man-crush on Nate. Daniel Way took over a new ongoing in 2008, and Wade slowly built in popularity, gaining more and more followers, until... well, he was EVERYWHERE.

-Deadpool, astonishingly, had hit that perfect level of sardonic, in-jokey humor that really fit the modern era, and had finally become one of the industry's top sellers. Marvel, accordingly, did the usual, and ran the idea into the ground- he formed a "Deadpool Corps." with alternate universe characters like Lady Deadpool, Kidpool, Dogpool, and Headpool (a severed head). He joined the Thunderbolts. He joined Uncanny X-Force. He even gained DEPTH, as he was horrified at X-Force's mission to kill a child version of Apocalypse, freaking out over the team for going on a mission to kill a kid. The foul-mouthed video game would be a bit of a hit, and then all of a sudden Ryan Reynolds, in the depths of a career death-spiral brought on by the disastrous Green Lantern, Turbo and R.I.P.D. coming out in quick succession and his Hollywood Hype Machine push dying... hit a major chord in a world stuffed with "Marvel Movies" and had a major smash hit with Deadpool. What was old hat to comics fans was INSANELY inventive for movie audiences, who adored this sarcastic, murderous asshole getting away with killing all sorts of goons. Teasing the good-natured, "old school hero" Colossus and the goth Negasonic Teenage Warhead, this was PERFECT for the 2010s. Reynolds drew a lot of praise for talking to the camera, breaking the fourth wall, going into industry tropes, and more. Forgettable villains? Didn't matter. The movie was a huge hit, and basically saved Reynolds' career.

Deadpool- Now a Major Star:
-Gerry Duggan took over a lot of Wade's books, of which there were often several. Yes, like we hadn't seen since the PUNISHER started doing this in the 1990s, Wade was now a multi-book star, teaming up with Spider-Man in one, having serious adventures in another, etc. Before Secret Wars, he became truly heroic and happily died, and of course returned with everyone else after the event, joining the Avengers Unity Squad, where Duggan had him hook up with ROGUE of all people, turning him into more of a quirky, charming hero. He's faced down numerous threats, like the vicious T-Ray (who may or may not be the original Wade Wilson) and Madcap, now turned into a menacing villain. Who knows what the next writer will turn him into? The character honestly became over-exposed, as is typical when someone's in a TON of books, especially if they have a weak supporting cast and villains (most of Wade's cast, like Weasel, Hydra Bob & others, have all died and been replaced over the years).

-Personally, I like what the character has become, though I mostly ignored his solo books (which often kind of override the irreverence by getting all serious, or devolving with all the goofy side characters). Overall, I heavily prefer a book that's funny because the hero is weird and cynically cracks jokes about things with pitch-black dark humour, than a book that's "funny" because the heroes all have stupid names and powers, or do stupid things. This is what makes Deadpool better than The Great Lakes Avengers in my mind- it's self-consciously, ironically funny and cracks wise at the industry itself without trying to be all "BWAH-HAH-HAHA AREN'T WE HUMOROUS BECAUSE THIS GIRL IS A MODEL WHO TURNS INTO A FAT CHICK AND THIS GUY DIES A LOT!!!?!!?" The first one actually takes talent to write, and the second does not.

Deadpool's Stats:
-Deadpool tends to have some high stats and Power Levels around here, but I didn't wanna go too nuts- his key advantage is less his various skills (though he IS quite skilled), but the fact that he's damn near unkillable. He's regenerated from decapitation, near-vaporization, having a hole the size of Rosie O'Donnell blasted through him with a laser gun, and more. And he regenerates FAST, too- he makes Wolverine & Sabretooth look like slowpokes. Overall, he's good enough a fighter to hold off any PL 11 for a good while, and his stamina makes him extremely dangerous. For some reason, many people assume he has superhuman strength, and I don't recall EVER seeing a hint of that in the comics, and it's not mentioned anymore anyhow, so he's basically a very strong level physical specimen with great martial arts. He may have ONCE showcased superhuman strength, but much like that bullshit temporary "Black Widow had the Super-Soldier Serum!" it's been completely dropped.

Deadpool, as I've said before, is also one of the ways I illustrate how to do a comedy character RIGHT. You can't make a recurring book out of "LOL MY POWER IS THAT I CAN CONTROL THE SIZE AND GROWTH OF LEEKS!", but you can get a lot of mileage out of "He's crazy" or "he never does the right thing" or "he thinks he's in a comic book". It's why Deadpool is a wildly successful character in multiple forms of media, while The Great Lakes Avengers will consistently fail to sell books every time they star in them. Hell, even John Byrne, their creator, never tried that- he KNEW they were a silly sidenote! It'd be like making a regular book out of the Legion of Substitute Heroes.

Granted, Deadpool's cynical attitude and the generally "random bad things happen" subject matter can run a little immature and Garth Ennis-like, but with a funny writer he's usually good. Granted, the best comedy writers are off in Hollywood or making REAL money and not writing comic books, but a Joe Kelly can make it work.

I have this reoccurring nightmare where Deadpool meets up with Lobo and the series is a mega hit spawning toys, games and movies.

Blind Al

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

BLIND AL (Althea something)
Created By:
Joe Kelly & Ed McGuinness
First Appearance: Deadpool #1 (Jan. 1997)
Role: Civilian Friend, Hostage

-Blind Al wasn't added to the Deadpool mythos until 1997, when Joe Kelly started his character-defining run. Initially shown as a grouchy old lady who lived with Deadpool in his home, her relationship with Wade grew increasingly bizarre. It would turn out that he once spared her life, but after he became insane, he kidnapped her and held her hostage in his home, keeping her as a combination of confidante, target for cruel pranks, and prisoner. So like... he'd go to her for actual advice, but would then trap her in a "Box" filled with sharp objects and kill anyone who tried to help her escape. In response, Al would be the only person to stand up to Wade, insulting him back (with much more cleverness than he had). And... she seemingly appreciated being kept with a roof over her head and protected from her enemies (she was affiliated with British Intelligence and marked for death in the past), and took a motherly role to Wade, hoping to turn him into a better person.

-Eventually, Wade went too far with a trip to "The Box" (the first time in years he'd done so; he was furious that she was meeting with Weasel behind his back), and realizing so, he freed Al. After that, he appearances became very sporadic- her "voice" was so specific to Kelly, I think that no other writer could really maintain her distinctive, snappy "cynical old lady" style- the few issues I have of this run usually feature her as the highlight. Kelly's initial idea was for her to be the Golden Age Black Widow, but instead, she's been much more mysterious.

The Deadpool Corps.

THE DEADPOOL CORPS.:
Created By:
Victor Gischler & Rob Liefeld
First Appearance: Deadpool- Merc With A Mouth #7 (March 2010)

-So with Deadpool undergoing a huge resurgence in popularity in the 2010s, Marvel decided to push him all over the place, as they are wont to do whenever a new character gets popular. PUSH IT UNTIL NOBODY CARES ANYMORE- in comics as in wrestling, that's the rule. But at least Marvel decided to dive headfirst into it, being open and honest about their shameless pandering. The "Deadpool Corps." of course parodies the tendency to create "Spin-Off Characters" of popular heroes, attempting to maximize sales by getting people who liked ONE thing into buying ANOTHER thing. In this case, it was just shameless enough to work. The Deadpool Corps. consisted of female, kid, dog and decapitated head versions of our hero, and got a twelve-issue Limited Series before most were killed.

-The Corps. were formed by The Contemplator, an Elder of the Universe who needed them to fight a menace. They defeated The Champion of the Universe by stranding him on an alien world, then Wade just abandoned the team to hang out with Dogpool (the only one he liked, since he couldn't talk and wouldn't steal the show from him). Ultimately, however, they ended up on an alien planet (so Wade could hit on hot alien chicks), convinced the Champion to join their team (becoming "Championpool"), but again abandons him. They finally confront their intended foe- a sentient cloud of disbelief called The Awareness. He attempts to take control of their minds, but finds Wade's "Full of bull****!", and so decides to just kill them. The heroes are finally able to defeat their opponent once everyone comes together.

-The various Deadpool Corps. characters are all eventually killed via another story involving Cross-Universe Deadpools.

Roster:
Lady Deadpool
Kidpool
Dogpool

-Lady Deadpool hails from Earth-3010, and joined a group of rebels against the United States so that she could feel wanted and belong to a group. Falling in love with one of the other rebels (who has a girlfriend), she keeps trying to impress him, leading to conflict with "General America". She's easily sweet-talked by our Deadpool into running off with him, abandoning her world after they kill the General. She's part of the Deadpool Corps. book, but shortly afterwards, sacrifices her life to stop an evil version of the Corps., flying their ship, The Bea Arthur, into the guy of Galacticpool, killing them both.

-Lady Deadpool is just a scaled-down, PL 9 version of Deadpool. Insane, deadly, and hard to kill, but still reduced.

-Kidpool, a play on all the "Muppet Babies" versions of superheroes, is a boy from the Xavier Orphanage For Troubled Boys, an antisocial outcast. He brawls with, and pranks, Scott Summers, and the two get detention, but Scott ultimately pays him to distract people so he can get Jean away from Wolverine. The distraction eventually causes a riot, at which point he's recruited by Deadpool for the Corps.

-Kidpool is your everyday "Trainee Hero" guy- a PL 8. Still expensive thanks to all the "Deadpool Stuff", though.

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Deathlok! Devil-Slayer! Darwin! Deadpool!)

Fun fact: I’d actually finished this section for a week or so before I suddenly realized “oh wait- the Deadpool Corps were a thing” and figured I’d have to stat them, too. I mean, it’s be dumb to wait until weeks or months after statting Wade. I didn’t realize they were done with the idea so quickly, but that’s really for the best- it’s an in-joke about spin-off characters when someone becomes popular. Best to be done with it in a year.

-Dogpool hails from an alternate universe as well, and was a misbehaving little mutt who was taken by evil doctors and experimented on for an everlasting mascara treatment- the regenerating "Mascara-X". This naturally gave him super-powers, so he survived by thrown in the dumpster and arose as "Deadpool- Merc With A Bark". He joined the circus as an unkillable Freak Show act, and the evil Doctor Braun tried to recapture him for further study. The future Dogpool defeats an upgraded version named "Wolverine", and the real Deadpool arrives to recruit him. Deadpool finds him the only likeable member of the Deadpool Corps, but Dogpool sadly dies defending him from the Evil Deadpool Corps.

-Dogpool takes my "Bulldog" build and upgrades it with Wade's Healing Powers and other attributes, making a PL 7 (80) miniature menace.

Skills:

Perception 5 (+5)
Vehicles 2 (+4)

Advantages:
All-Out Attack, Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Improved Hold, Power Attack, Ranged Attack 4, Startle

Unarmed +10 (+8 Damage, DC 23)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +8, Fortitude +10, Will +4

Complications:
Responbsibility (Insane)- Deke is a destructive, savage being at this point, killing people and draining their blood. He continues to believe that his friend Zonkers is alive, speaking to his decapitated head, even after it fuses with Deke's own body.
Weakness (Bludgeoning)- Deke's brain is still semi-vulnerable, in that he can't regenerate quickly from blows to the head.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 22 / Defenses: 11 (119)

-Created for a Punisher Limited Series, Deke Wainscroft was the son of a wealthy man, but became a drug-addicted, anarchistic terrorist, killing innocent people and being imprisoned. When his friend was killed in an explosion which also maimed him, Deke took some rejected Super-Soldier Serum, and his body reacted poorly, taking on the properties of the sewer around him. He went on a rampage, killing dozens (including a pregnant woman, whose baby mutated and was later also killed).

-Deke defeated the Punisher in their first encounter, necessitating Frank allying with agents of the Kingpin, who had been hired by Deke's father to bring him in alive. Deke proved immune to all sorts of harm, but Frank found his one weakness- his brain was somewhat vulnerable, so repeated blows to the head felled him. S.H.I.E.L.D. took him away, and his father was allowed to use his body to try and produce a better version of the Super-Soldier formula. He never reappeared outside of this story.
