-This is a character whose name I've often seen mentioned in bios and occasionally in print, but I've never once seen him. He's a Howard Chaykin creation, based off of his "Scorpion" character from a failed comic book company. Dominic appeared in a Comics-Code-Free black & white magazine line, back when that was a big thing for Marvel, then showed up in a back-up feature in the Hulk Magazine (not comic). The feature, set in the 1930s, lasted until 1980- he was basically a "Golden Age James Bond", dealing with Nazi saboteurs and assassins, escaping a lower-class existence as an Escape Artist & Bodyguard. Various Retcons and "past stories" have been introduced around this time, as he's met old-school Baron Zemo & Baron Von Strucker, Doctor Doom's parents, and even a young Steve Rogers- protecting him once from bullies, and helping keep him alive when he was chosen for "Project: Rebirth" in 1941. One much-more-recent story features him joining an "Avengers Initiative" with Nick Fury, Sabretooth & Ulysses Bloodstone, among other older Marvel characters.

-In 1982, an elderly version of the character would appear in modern Marvel stories, crossing over with characters in Marvel Team-Up and other books- Chaykin was not involved this time around. Since retiring around 1960, Fortune had gotten married, had a couple of kids, and retired. The grand villain who brought him out of retirement? Turner D. Century, of course! Tragically, his son Jerry would die while dressed as the NEXT Dominic Fortune, saving his father's life from Obadiah Stane- The Iron Monger. It would be another TWENTY YEARS until he'd show up again, this time for a Limited Series featuring himself and Silver Sable. He'd injested a flawed Super-Soldier Serum and ended up de-aged for this mission, but he got a bit older again, sticking around the "Spy Game", often helping out Mockingbird.

-A pretty standard "Spy Guy" build, which thankfully requires only a handful of things- I still have nightmares about all the Skills 2nd Edition had, and having to type out 900 of them for every single Military/Spy-themed character. That's actually what resulted in one of my big sabbaticals from statting characters!

Having read the story in which Dominic's son was killed, apparently it was just some Mook wearing the Iron Monger suit (which really did seem to be almost "Crimson Dynamo'd" a bit back then, since I recall at least two stories where some random assholes got a hold of the tech and recreated the suit)

Devil’s Heart

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

DEVIL'S HEART (Real Name Unknown)
Created By:
David Kraft & Don Heck
First Appearance: Giant-Size Dracula #4 (March 1975)
Role: One-Off Threat

-Centuries ago, a Sioux necromancer in the American plains attempted an unnatural ritual, and was slain- as punishment, his spirit was imprisoned within a gigantic heart buried beneath the earth. The Heart eventually learned to control the people living above it, and an innocent man was forced to submit to dark urges and slay animal, friend, and family alike- he sent his own daughter away for her own protection. Returning with her fiancee, she was attacked by both father & fiancee, but Dracula, who'd befriended her during her exile, discovered what was going on. He fought everyone present, but the unfortunate girl was sacrificed, causing the Heart to disintegrate into a pile of goo (I guess succeeding in ending its imprisonment). When her father came to his senses and realized what he'd done, he took his own life. So basically a big, "bad ending" one-off.

-The Devil's Heart is immobile, but a reasonably effective Mind Controller- a "Basement Psychic".

The Anachronauts

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE ANACHRONAUTS:
Created By:
Mark Gruenwald & Herb Trimpe
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four Annual #25 (1992)
Role: SUPER-Nineties Characters
-The Anachronauts rather forgettable- a band of random losers formed together by Kang from powerful fighters across history. They appear and challenge the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, but are quickly routed. They appear in the background of a few scenes, with Apocryphus piloting Kang's warship, but they are all killed- OFF-PANEL- by Immortus and his invading armies, in the pages of Avengers Forever, written out as one of the many "Kang Things" that Kurt Busiek & Carlos Pacheco didn't want to deal with. Wildrun survived, giving some exposition. The Marvunapp bio-writer suggests these guys were mere Space Phantoms of Immortus, as their whole story-arc, The Crossing, was more or less exiled from continuity, as it was ruining the Avengers.

Members:
THE BLACK KNIGHT (Sir Raston): The second Black Knight, also a wielder of the Ebony Blade.
APOCRYPHUS: The last surviving Eternal of an alternate Earth, Apocryphus only showed Flight & Energy Blasts.
RAA: A big caveman, he was in search of worthy opponents. He carried a spear, and appeared to have the Bloodstone imbedded in his chest, much as Ulysses Bloodstone did.
SSITH: A big lizard guy with a sword, said to be from 12,000 years ago, and was the last of the Serpent Men.
TYNDAR: A warrior from the kingdom of Troy, said to be invulnerable due to being dipped in the River Styx, as Achilles had. No known weakness, but he pretty much doesn't matter to the narrative.
WILDRUN: The original Red Wolf from the 1700s, he chased the Sioux away from their homes so his Cheyenne people would have a place to live.

-Deathunt 9000 is the leader of the Anachronauts, Kang's soldiers. Notable mainly for having OH MY GOD THE MOST 1990s NAME IN THE HISTORY OF COMIC BOOKS! I mean, his name is DEATHUNT. With a "9000" after it for no apparent reason (were Deathunts 1 through 8999 pussies or something?). He was the only one to have a real effect over the stories, as he went on many solo missions, or ones using some Cyborg Minions (Strike Fireteam Decimal Four). This was The Crossing, an infamous story that attempted to retcon in that Tony Stark was always evil, under the employe of Kang, and was replaced by an innocent "Teen Tony". This was seen as the "Dork Age" of the Avengers franchise at the time, and was written out of continuity only a couple of years later, so much of this is likely to have never happened at all.

Dodge +13 (DC 23), Parry +12 (DC 12), Toughness +6 (+7 Armour), Fortitude +9, Will +8

Complications:
Motivation (Power)- Deathbird desires the Shi'ar Throne most of all, but any amount of power is good.
Relationship (Lilandra)- Deathbird despises her younger sister most of the time, frequently trying to usurp her throne or kill the "Diplomat" of the family. At other times, she defers to Lilandra's leadership.
Relationship (Bishop, Vulcan)

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 62--31 / Advantages: 27 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 16 (174)

-Deathbird was kind of a one-note Ms. Marvel villain created by Chris Claremont, but much like EVERYTHING he used back when he was a mere rookie in the comic book world, he re-used her for his fabled X-Men run. In Ms. Marvel, Deathbird was an alien who was working for MODOK and A.I.M., but was thought dead when MODOK betrayed her and fled- she reappeared twice more as a threat for Hawkeye & Danvers (again). Then suddenly, Deathbird was now Empress Lilandra's older sister, a "throwback" of Shi'ar evolution that still packed the wings of a bird of prey, and OF COURSE she was now after the throne. She was mean, nasty and vicious, even allying with the monstrous BROOD of all races, eventually becoming Majestrix of the Empire before being deposed by Lilandra and the Starjammers. However, she was eventually kicked into X-Limbo once "Space Tales" became a lot less popular in comics.

-Eventually she allied with Lilandra (confessing she was bored with bureaucracy), helping her during the Kree/Shi'ar War. She became viceroy of the Kree before Marvel forgot that the Shi'ar conquered them, but then disappeared for most of the '90s. In the "Joe Mad" era of X-Men, she allied with the team and did the nasty with Bishop, growing attached to him as a brave warrior, and he with her. The two ended up in an Alternate Future where they deposed Lilandra & Xavier's insane daughter (the ruler of Earth), but Deathbird allowed her to live, against her best instincts. However, Bishop soon got his own solo book, and so Deathbird suddenly betrayed him to Apocalypse without reason, then became one of his Horsemen. As the new "War", she gathered The Twelve for a largely-forgotten story arc, but scattered when Apocalypse seemed slain. She taunts Bishop during Maximum Security (a crossover featuring many aliens being trapped on Earth) and vanishes from the narrative for years- Claremont implies that his new characters Slipstream and Lifeguard may be her children, but this never goes anywhere.

-Deathbird is next relevant when Vulcan becomes a thing- the Third Summers Brother, Vulcan breaks free from a prison that also holds Deathbird (jailed by Lilandra for being a threat to the throne again- Back To Basics Syndrome, you see), and falls in love with her. With Deathbird's older brother D'Ken finally coming out of his Cosmic-Based Coma (from wayyyyyyyyy back in the '70s), he recognizes Vulcan & Deathbird's feelings, and allows Vulcan to marry in to the royal family- a colossally-stupid move that gets him killed, as Vulcan soon exterminates him and takes control himself. Deathbird is thus the Empress of the Shi'ar... but disappears from the narrative- she's captured by some guys who want her hybrid baby to be the progenitor of a "Master Race", and so she doesn't show up in much of the Abnett/Lanning "Space Stuff" I've read, simply having Vulcan be a Caligula-like dictator all by himself.

-Ultimately, the character had fairly little depth- like the Teen Titans' Blackfire, she was considered deformed at birth (an evolutionary throwback, being born with wings) and grew up resentful because of it, and was a thorn in Lilandra's side while she was trying to lead the Shi'ar Empire... but then writers kept changing her personality and concept- she was a Mercenary, then a Power-Hungry Usurper, then a Bored Leader, then a Right-Hand of the Majestrix, then fell in love, then randomly betrayed her love, then kind of just disappeared from the narrative. Overall, she's kind of a mess.

-Deathbird's PL 10 in parts, PL 9.5 in others, making a very effective, Advantage & Skill-packing Scrapper build. She could go a few rounds with Wolverine, but packs guns as weapons, and can fly.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 60 / Defenses: 9 (110)

-Diamondhead's pretty much a piece of crap villain, being a common criminal who got turned into a super-strong diamond-hard dude after being shot by a "Diamond-Powered Laser"... not sure how that works, but it looks like the Nova series in general was kind of goofy stuff. There's a reason why Richard Rider (don't call him Dick... it makes his name way too hilarious) vanished from comics until 1991, and then again until 2002. He was downgraded as a threat so much that by the time Nova Prime came back to Earth, he dusted off Diamondhead in about two seconds with a hand-shattering Gravimetric Pulse. Totally a joke villain- not sure if he was ever anything else.

-Diamondhead was just a Recurring Jobber for Nova during the 1976-79 series, allying with Condor & Powerhouse to form The Terrible Trio, then teaming with The Sphinx & Doctor Sun. He betrays The Nova Corps. to the Skrulls in another story (they were all flying around in space in a Fantastic Four arc), and spends ten years on the shelf, showing up as a prisoner of The Stranger alongside other forgotten space-characters that only Mark Gruenwald remembered. He doesn't reappear until post-Annihilation, and is curbstomped by Nova- later on, he even fights the NEW Nova... and is again defeated.

-He was gonna be a PL 9 threat, but I ultimately realized he was just way too crappy for that, so he's PL 8 everywhere but for his Parry Defense, which is PL 8.5. Nova pretty much beat him with one punch, and even though he's a PL 13 super-god now, Diamondhead likely wouldn't fare too well against any other super-hero. He'd lose to most of the Young X-Men (and DID lose to the new Nova), though he's still okay enough to do some damage.

The Destroyer (Dirty Commie)

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE DESTROYER IV (Charles Stanton)
Created By:
Stan Lee, Larry Lieber & Jack Kirby
First Appearance: Strange Tales #101 (Oct. 1962)
Role: Short-Lived Villain

-Wow, they re-used the Golden Age Destroyer's name for some one-off Communist sympathizer? What useless hacks were responsible for THOSE o--- oh. Oh, Jack. Oh, Stan.

-So this Destroyer, called the "Communist one" to differentiate him from the confusing mess the other ones turned into, was a small-town newspaperman who was giving info to the Soviets, who arrived to town via submarines. Fearing that a local amusement park's bigger and bigger rides would allow riders to spot the subs, he began to sabotage them, sending threatening letters and the like, in some real "Scooby Doo" nonsense. He actually beat the Human Torch (this was his solo feature) using flame-retardant foam via a trap, but ran away... because some teenagers were walking close to them. The Torch eventually spotted the subs himself, and laid waste to both the Commies and their Destroyer. He has never reappeared, and many more stories were written of the Golden Age hero, who was replaced twice, making this guy the fourth.

-This Destroyer could lay traps, had a gun, and sucked.

DK

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

D.K. (David Kalen)
Created By:
Todd DeZago & Sal Buscema
First Appearance: The Spectacular Spider-Man #230 (Jan. 1996)
Role: Short-Lived Villain

-David Kalen and his brother Henry were attacked by toxic sludge while investigating a corrupt businessman's dealings- Henry was killed, and David became the mutated "DK", dissolving matter just by touching it. Spider-Man (Ben Reilly, I think) managed to convince him to spare the man responsible. However, DK was struck by survivor's guilt over his brother's death, and he began to "turn inwards", damaging himself badly. Despite Spidey attempting to help him, DK died, but thanked Spidey for believing in him. A bit later, his leftover "sludge" briefly reanimated for a second, stopping a now-youthful Vulture from killing Spider-Man- this undid his rejuvenation, and this turned him back into an old man.

Ah, weird. That's an interesting bit of trivia- I guess since Stane died, they figured "why not use the giant suit again?". And that was BEFORE the movie made him a big deal, so Marvel had him get a son to replicate his success... which wouldn't work, because it's not Obadiah Stane anyhow. Oh, comics :).

Doing this section is a bit surreal, because we're now entering the FINAL stage of "names that have been on my To-Do List for years". I remember when The List was first created, how a lot of names stood out to me (Frost, Lectronn, Mitchell Chambers, Moondark, Flying Dutchman's Ghost, The Fatboys, Baroness Zemo) as ones I wanted to research and look up, finding whether or not they were "worthy" to be statted.

As the "D" names have been last, most of them were a bit forgotten by now, but I always remember seeing a "David Kalen" on The List. Plus a generic name like "Dominus" had me always curious. Cycling through the absolute last of the "Unknowns" is a very strange feeling, because I remember the sense of discovery and "Holy cow, that's a weird side-story" about so much of The List. And while many of the names turned out to be duds (you can tell because I typically only write a small paragraph about them and give no stats, or just ignore them entirely), it's the total number of additional builds that makes a thread like this so enjoyable to write :).

---

PS OH GOD RAGE OF THE DRAGON BUILDS!!! Sooooooooooo annoying how their move names aren't descriptive at all, so I have to watch YouTube videos entirely... and it's a TEAM GAME!! And while I was all thinking "This may be the year I do King of Fighters, the sheer annoyance of having to watch someone play MULTIPLE characters per video, and try to sort out someone's moves from that, is practically beating me over the head with "DOING KING OF FIGHTERS BUILDS WILL ANNOY THE BALLS OFF OF YOU!!!"

I finally got them finished, but it was a huge slog. Double Dragon V was awful too, but at least "Gun Shot" or "Laser Eyes" helps me out. KOF games tend to leave most of the move names in Japanese!

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 4--2 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 111 / Defenses: 6 (156)

-The Doomsday Man was created for Stan Lee's Pet Project, the Silver Surfer book, but ended up becoming a recurring Carol Danvers threat instead. He was built by Dr. Kronton to help American astronauts settle on hostile worlds, but the government felt he was too powerful, and so the "indestructible" robot was buried in a bunker. Kronton, angered, freed the robot, but the Silver Surfer managed to dig a massive trench to dump the thing. Kronton tried to give it further instructions, but mistaking him for a hostile enemy, the robot killed him. Seven years later, Chris Claremont brought the robot back as a one-off Ms. Marvel foe, fighting Carol Danvers until she found the shut-off panel in the back of his neck. During the "Heavy Metal" story arc in Avengers, Roger Stern had Monica Rambeau melt the Doomsday Man, fearing he could be recruited into joining the Super-Adaptoid's army of robots.

-Kurt Busiek would reveal this was a deception, as the Doomsday Man finally returned twenty years after his Ms. Marvel appearance, in Busiek's Avengers run. It turns out that it had merged with a Half-Kree individual back in the day, and with that man's body supposedly decaying, he needed a new "host"- the similarly-Kree Carol Danvers. The Avengers couldn't harm the robot, but Justice was able to use his Telekinesis to find the same panel, breaking him. Eventually, the host freed his mind (he wasn't dead after all), taking control of the Doomsday Man and attacking Ms. Marvel in her new solo book- finally, she was able to tap into her anger, finally breaking the "indestructible" robot's chest open after repeated blows, and freeing the man inside.

-The Doomdsay Man is supposedly "indestructible", shrugging off the Surfer's Power Cosmic, Ms. Marvel (Danvers), Giant-Man, and Iron Man, but has a weak point in its neck, and Danvers finally tore open its chest once. So it's incredibly durable, but is mostly a PL 10 fighter otherwise.

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Deathlok! Darwin! Deadpool! Deathbird!)

Wow, coming down to the end of The List. It was a lot of fun doing the research between the various biobooks and your huge index of characters. I think that there have been at least a few good characters in there, even if a bunch of them were turkeys.

It would be fun to see if someone could put together a The List 2.0. How much more obscure, and worthwhile, can characters get? One huge hole is characters from recent years but from the sounds of it, there just haven't been that many worthwhile characters that have come out that Jab hasn't already done.

Thanks Jab for all the great builds!
