-Dry Bones were enemies found in Castle Stages, and were basically unkillable- they would resurrect no matter WHAT you did to them! They're rather slow, uneventful foes otherwise, but their tendency to arrive in small passageways with less room to Stomp, Immunities to two Power-Up abilties, and an inability to ever really put them down makes them tougher. They appeared in Mario 3 as an edited, white version of the Koopa Troopa sprite, then showed a different look in Mario World, as they're still quadrupedal, compared to the two-legged Koopas seen in that game. They skipped Mario 64 and Sunshine completely, but reappeared for the Galaxy series.

-Dry Bones are VERY expensive for Mario Mooks given the 17 ranks of Immortality require to make up the 30-second Resurrection period (12 seconds is a BIT more accurate to the games, but that's basically a single round in M&M and is too fast for my taste).

Variants:
BONE-THROWING DRY BONES- PL 4 (72): "Thrown Bone" Blast 4 (Feats: Accurate 2) (Diminished Range -2) [8]
-In Mario World, some Dry Bones may throw bones at you.

SUPER DRY BONES- PL 5 (70): STRENGTH +2, Protection +2 [6]
-Debuting in New Super Mario Bros. are these very large Dry Bones that are merely stunned by a Stomp, and need a "Ground Pound" to be dismantled.

PARABONES- PL 5 (69): Flight 3 (Flaws: Winged), Protection +2 [5]
-Super Mario 3D World introduces the Parabones, a flying variant.

Pauline

PAULINE (akay Lady)
First Appearance:
Donkey Kong (1981)
Game Appearances: Donkey Kong, Mario vs. Donkey Kong Series, Mario Odyssey
Japanese Name: Lady/Pauline
Role: Damsel In Distress

-One of the earliest Damsels In Distress in video-gaming, Pauline is the name that eventually went to "Lady", the pink-dress-wearing girl kidnapped by Donkey Kong in the famous 1991 arcade game. The character only appears in that one game for most of history, as Mario Bros. didn't feature her, and Super Mario Bros. and its subsequent games makes the Damsel a new character named Princess Peach/Toadstool. And so Pauline was lost to history (and out of continuity!) until a post-Donkey Kong Country surge in popularity led to a few shots here and there, including a Mario (vs) Donkey Kong series. Amazingly, the character actually makes a MAIN SERIES APPEARANCE in Mario Odyssey, playing the Mayor of "New Donk City" in the real world.

-Pauline is such a D.I.D. that she can't even really get stats. I guess the Odyssey version has Singing & Politics, but that's it.

Bullet Bill

BULLET BILL

Super Mario Bros. (1985)
Game Appearances: Mario 1-3, Mario World, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy 1-2, Mario Odyssey, Yoshi's Island, Mario & Luigi Series, Paper Mario Series, Mario Land Series
Japanese Name: Kira ("killer")
Role: Personificated Projectile
PL 5 (32)

FIGHTING 4 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE -1

Skills:

Advantages:

Powers:

"Bullet Blast" (All Have Flaws: Requires Bullet Blaster)
Strength-Damage +4 [2]
Flight 4 (30 mph) [4]

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+5 Damage, DC 20)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +3 (DC 13), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +3, Fortitude +3, Will +0

Complications:
Responsibility (King Koopa's Will)

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 00--0 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 11 / Defenses: 3 (32)

-Bullet Bills are one of the "Classic" Mario Enemies, and were kind of a pain in great numbers or if you were stuck with a Blaster in front of you and stuff going on, though easy to defeat when solo. They appear primarily in the first game, and Mario World, though they're often on airships in Mario 3. In Mario World, they often appeared diagonally (even en masse!) and vertically! In Mario 64, they were unkillable, larger creatures.

-Bullet Bills could be statted up in numerous ways- Obstacles that are merely fired from guns, unthinking Machines, Summon Minions of the Bill Blasters, etc., but I figured I'd just make them sentient dudes that require the Blaster to actually do much damage. After all, they DO have hands and mean faces on them, so they're implied to be alive. In later games, they have a tendency to home in, but can still be handily avoided. Bullet Biffs from "Mario Land" are the same, despite having little rockets behind them. When you beat Super Mario World, the Bullet Bills are transformed into Pidgit Bills, which are the same, but look like birds instead.

Variants:
Image

TORPEDO TED- PL 7 (41): Protection 10, Swimming 6 Replaces Flight 4 [9]
-Debuting in Mario World, Torpedo Teds are the same as Bills, but are found underwater, dropped by a hand coming out of a Skull Box instead of a Bill Blaster. They are immune to harm (high Protection, raising their PL), but are otherwise the same enemy.

Image

MISSILE BILL- PL 7 (35): Flaw's Value is Reduced by Half, as they can get Two attacks out instead of one [3]
-An enemy from Mario 3, Missile Bills are the same as Bullets, but have "Heat-Seeking" properties, meaning they will turn around and take another shot. They are red Bills, which flash with the current palette on screen at the time, which means that Mario & Luigi will face different-colored Bills.

3D BULLET BILLS- PL 5 (37): Immunity 5 (Stomp) [5]
-In Mario 64 and a few other games, Bullet Bills were unkillable because you couldn't Stomp them.

MARIO GALAXY BULLET BILLS- PL 6 (41): FIGHTING +2, Immunity 5 (Stomp) [9]
-Bullet Bills in Mario Galaxy actually have slight Homing capabilities.

Pauline was a real surprise, I always thought that it was just peach in the original DK games.

On another note did you hear the song they had her sing for the game? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er9ueNyz7Mk

Post by KorokoMystia »

Dry Bones were always neat and really annoying enemies (kind of creepy, too), and it was even more interseting when they started making "Dry/Bone" variants of other enemies. Hell, in the first New Super Mario Bros. game, after the first Bowser boss fight which is a recreation of the fight from the original SMB, Bowser is literally dunked into the lava and burned alive, reducing him to a skeleton form, "Dry Bowser", who is fought towards the end of the game, and has even shown up in some games as a playable character!
Image

The Bullet Bills are pretty memorable foes as well, though it does raise some odd questions, given how almost everything in the Mario verse appears to be sentient. Like, even some of the background setpieces and hills have eyes sometimes.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, Kamek probably deserves a build (since he was mostly the main antagonist in Mario World 2), even if he's really just an elite Magikoopa. It's also rather confusing because his English name is just the Japanese name of his species, so he doesn't have a unique name in Japanese, despite being a distinct character.

-Hard as it may seem to believe, Banzai Bills were an early example of the graphical power of the Super NES- regular-size enemies were a staple of video games, but GIANT ones? This guy was MUCH bigger than most sprites you'd see on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and seeing giant things like Banzai Bills & Big Boos was quite special to kids getting the new system for the first time. The first time you saw it, you were like "HOLY CRAP!" and had to jump to get out of its way. Despite the impression they left on me, Banzai Bills only appeared in three levels of Mario World! But since one was a verrrrrrrrrrry early stage, they were fought early and often by most players.

-Banzai Bills' size makes them harder to avoid, but easier to land on (assuming you can get up high enough- they're far enough off the ground that Mario has to jump off of something to make the Stomp). Otherwise, it's the same enemy, really.

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +3 (+4 Shell), Fortitude +3, Will +0

Complications:
Responsibility (King Koopa's Will)
Power Loss (Regeneration)- Buzzy Beetles do not Regenerate from Super-Star or Flying-Form Damage Powers.
Involuntary Transformation (Static Shell)- If Stunned, KO'd or otherwise incapacitated, a Beetle will hide within it's shell. If it does not recover in time, anyone can pick up or use the Shell as a powerful Line Area Damage Effect.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 6--3 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 3 (48)

-Buzzy Beetles were a great example of the brilliance of the early Mario franchise. The Fire Flower provided Mario with his greatest weapon in this game, yet here was a simple enemy, different only because it was IMMUNE to that exact attack! The Beetles could still be killed like any ol' Koopa, but that extra boost to the death-weapon made them pretty nasty. Later games had them be less powerful (the Raccoon Tail or Cape Spin could kill them, as well as the Spin Jump), since they never gained other Immunities and Mario kept gaining new attacks.

-Despite the name, Buzzy Beetles are actually Koopa-like turtle-creatures. Oddly, they never showed up in Mario 64 or any other 3D Platformer in the series- this seems rather dumb to me, as they're a simple enemy type and can shake up the tired old Koopa routine, though I suppose they've almost gotten rid of the Fire Flower entirely, so their primary purpose is gone.

-Buzzy Beetles are PL 5 like Red Koopa Troopas, but are Immune to Fire, and can't be knocked out of their shells, so it's not a Device.

Variants:
Image

SPIKE TOP- PL 5 (69): Immunity 5 (Stomp), Spike Aura 4 [21]
-Spike Tops are occasionally seen in Super Mario World, acting sorta like Spinies. They're effectively Buzzy Beetles, however (drawn with six legs in the first game, but the Wii games give 'em four), since they're Immune to Fire as well as the Stomp, giving Mario only a handful of other options for dealing with them (the best one is to just ignore them).

-Bony Beetles are basically the "Dry Bones" of the Beetle Species, being Undead variations of the type, who can also form Spikes on their backs if they duck down. They're rather easy to avoid in any case, but like Dry Bones, are impossible to truly kill. Their unimpressive sprites make them one of the lamest, graphically-weak creatures in the Mario series, in my opinion. Subsequent games have given them more turtle-like, spiked shells, which greatly improved them.

Relationship (Princess Toadstool)- Toad is the Princess' loyal Retainer, and he does everything in his power to help her.
Accident (Accident-Prone/Whiny)- Toad often complains about various things, or has bad things happen to him.

Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 12 (84)

-I thought Toad was TOTALLY awesome back in my childhood, largely because the little friggin' bastard is so darned CUTE with that giant mushroom cap on his tiny body. He was easily my favourite Mario character, and I often drew pictures of him and wrote stories featuring HIM as the hero instead of boring ol' Mario. Hell, for a Grade 5 class "Original Story", I wrote a little book called The Fox and Billy, combining the Archie/MLJ/Red Circle hero The Fox (a Batman ripoff decked out like The Black Panther) with Toad, now called Billy for... whatever reason a Grade 5 student could come up with. He had a normal name DESPITE STILL OBVIOUSLY BEING TOAD. This is entertaining both for the insanity of the story (Toad is somehow a sidekick despite having no fighting ability, and has to rescue The Fox after he's poisoned by an enemy), and the fact that I essentially made a Cross-Over Fic before that was even a thing. Odder STILL, I didn't include any Slashing or other Pairings in a FanFic story!

-But in any case, Toad was awesome, despite the games basically using him as a generic Victim or Helper character 95% of the time, and a filler character in Big Group Mario games like Mario Party or Mario Kart. The cartoons turned him into a whiny-voiced victim who always had SOME kind of complaining to do, but the cartoons stank anyways- they may have killed by appreciation for the character. Toad himself only really got used as a fighter in Mario 2 (which is actually his debut- the Mushroom Kingdom Helpers in Mario 1 are not him), where he was the strongest character, and the fastest on ground, despite being the worst jumper. This is REALLY the opposite of how the tiny Toad has usually been portrayed.

-Creating a Toad build kind of depends on which games you're following (in Mario 2, he’s a powerhouse!), but generally he's always been a Mushroom Kingdom Royal Retainer and helper rather than a fighter, so I'm going with an accurate, defensive Sidekicky type who maxes out at PL 5.

Upgrades:
Image

YELLOW & BLUE TOAD- PL 6 (92): STRENGTH +2, FIGHTING +2 [8]
-There is a pair of Toads that exist in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as these games are supposed to be Four-Player, and they didn't want to stick the Princess in there for Damsel-In-Distress-based reasons.

Toad is one of those odd cases in the Mario series where despite being a distinct character, he doesn't have a different name to distinguish him from the generic Toads that are usually background NPCs. And in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, while Peach still isn't playable, they got around it by having Toadette as a playable character, and giving her a unique power up, the Super Crown, that gave her Peach's floating jump, turning her into "Peachette".

Advantages:
Teamwork

Powers:

Swimming 3 (4 mph) [3]
Immunity 2 (Drowning, Pressure) [2]
"Fish Attack" Damage 3 [3]
Leaping 3 (60 feet) [3]

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+3 Damage, DC 18)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +3, Fortitude +3, Will +0

Complications:
Responsibility (King Koopa's Will)
Weakness (Dry Land)- Cheep-Cheeps may leap for long distances, but if trapped on land, they are quickly rendered helpless- people may defeat a flopping Cheep-Cheep as a Free Action.

Total: Abilities: 6 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 11 / Defenses: 3 (26)

-Cheep-Cheeps were arguably the most generic Mooks of the entire series- Goombas had a unique look, Koopas had their Shells, Spinies & Buzzy Beetles had their immunities, Piranha Plants & Bob-Ombs had their own schticks... Cheep-Cheeps were basically just plain-looking red fish (a few are gray) and that was it. This lack of originality made for pretty boring Mooks, but they served their purpose as floating obstacles in Underwater Stages, so it's not so bad. They were pretty standard in the first handful of Mario games (some swam; others jumped), but Super Mario World added a bunch of new subspecies.

-Red Cheep-Cheeps tended to leap, while Green ones were back & forth swimmers. Mario World added some in bubbles, which had strange arcs that made them a bit tricky, but if the bubble popped, the Cheep-Cheep was a helpless free attack-able creature.

-A PL 3.5 regular Mook like a Koopa Troopa, Cheep-Cheeps kinda suck, but since they usually appear in MASSIVE numbers and are immune to all but Power-Up attacks underwater, you have to be careful. There are also those levels where they can go flying through the air at high speeds (well above the water-level), but this leaves them vulnerable to Stomps (since Mario can't use them underwater). Otherwise they're barely above animal intelligence.

Variants:
Image

RIP VAN FISH- PL 5 (34): Fighting 6, Perception 8 (+7) [8]
-Rip Van Fish is a Mario World enemy, known mainly for constantly sleeping, up until the point that you swim by. Rip then wakes up and begins chasing you at high speeds, making him more dangerous than the usual dopey Cheep-Cheeps. Despite this, Rip is one of the least-appearing Mario enemies of all time, appearing as foes in only this single game.

BLURP- PL 4 (26):
-There are also Blurps, green-scaled fish with goggles & snorkels, who are basically the same as Cheep-Cheeps in every way. They're basically a case of creating a new sprite to do the exact same thing. At least they give some extra diversity to the festivities underwater.

SPINY CHEEP-CHEEP- PL 5 (46): Fighting 6, Spike Aura 4 [20]
-Spiny Cheep-Cheeps debuted in a single level in Mario 3 (I have no recollection of that- it's in Pipe World, which many people skip), being a bit faster than the generic type. After this, they completely vanished from the main series (though Mario Land 2 had some) until the Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. eras brought them back. In the Super Mario World TV series, they could Paralyze people with their touch, so feel free to shift Auras around to make it a Paralytic Affliction instead.

FISHBONE- PL 7 (48): No Stamina, Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects), Protection 8 [22]
-Dry Bones are the "Undead" variant of Cheep-Cheeps, and look like generic Fish Skeletons swimming about in darting motions. Largely appearing in only one level (the Vanilla Fortress), they didn't make much of an impact on the series, and vanished until the New Super Mario Bros. series. They're invincible in-game, so just swim around them. In M&M terms, an invincible enemy is rather dull, so they're merely a good bit tougher than most of Mario's attacks.

Image

PORCUPUFFER- PL 6 (48): Strength 3, Fish Attack is Strength-Damage +3, Fighting 5, Spike Aura 3 [22]
-Porcupuffers are a Mario World enemy that's pretty much just like Spiny Cheep-Cheeps, but are a fair bit larger, so they work differently statistically- they're stronger and do more damage overall, but the Aura is weaker since you can do the "Spin Jump" in that game to "Ride" them. Porcupuffers, like a lot of new Cheep-Cheeps, only have this single appearance until the New Super Mario Bros. series.

Image

URCHIN- PL 5 (58): Spike Aura 6, Immunity 10 (Fire & Flying Attack Damage) [34]
-Urchins are slow-moving characters that do very little other than sit there, but they are highly-immune to things, Yoshi can't eat them, and they get in the way of things you want. They took a seventeer-year break from the series after Mario World, appearing only in the Galaxy and New game series.

BIG CHEEP-CHEEP- PL 5 (26): STRENGTH +2, Defenses -2 [0]
-Big Cheep-Cheeps are only in the New Super Mario Bros. series, and are the same thing as the regulars, but larger, making them more vulnerable.

Image

DEEP-CHEEP- PL 5 (28): Close Attack 2 [2]
-Deep-Cheeps, like Rip Van Fish, will chase after the heroes. They are the Green Cheep-Cheeps found in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

MEGA DEEP-CHEEP- PL 6 (28): STRENGTH +2, Close Attack 2, Defenses -2 [2]
-Deep-Cheeps also received a larger version in the New games.

Image

EEP-CHEEP- PL 4 (26):
-Yellow Cheep-Cheeps were originally supposed to appear in Mario 3, and were meant to be faster fish, appearing in large schools. New Super Mario Bros. took the concept with these golden variants, but made them wimps- timid creatures, they flee from incoming enemies instead.

And in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, while Peach still isn't playable, they got around it by having Toadette as a playable character, and giving her a unique power up, the Super Crown, that gave her Peach's floating jump, turning her into "Peachette".
What's weird is that in Japan, he DOES have a different name from his peers, but the West never made the differentiation. So he's just Toad... one of the Toads.

On another note did you hear the song they had her sing for the game? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er9ueNyz7Mk
Haha, nope. But why does she have a giant cartoon head with a tiny mouth that barely moves, while there's normal-looking people all around her?

"I'll be your 1-Up Gal" is pretty good stuff, though.
