Enemy (Mario & Luigi)
Disabled (Relatively Immobile)- Thwomps can only move in one direction- up or down, or left to right.
Disabled (Slow)- Thwomps can only attack once every two rounds- if they miss the first time, their target can easily run by them.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 44 / Defenses: 4 (72)

-Thwomps have been a classic part of the Mario franchise for years, and are probably the best Obstacle in the games- not too hard to get by (just lure it into making a Stomp, then run out of the way and jump on by when it's moving back up), rarely a SUPREME killer, but ALSO possessing some personality- they grimace and make nasty faces while moving, thus making them better than your faceless Pillars and Buzzsaws. They are largely invincible to regular attacks, but they CAN be killed by Mario's Invincible form, the Hammer Suit's hammers, Giant Mario, and the Statue Stomp of the Tanooki Suit- killing Thwomps, however, is so rare that it's a REALLY unique thing to actually see.

-The obstacle-based 3D game Mario 64 actually used Thwomp-like characters a lot, tough only three "Classic" Thwomps appear in the game.

-As a PL 6 creature, Thwomps are impressively-powered for Mario Mooks, but they're only PL 5 offensively. You can't really Stomp them or anything, but they ARE vulnerable to certain other attacks. I gather this by making them Immune to Fire & Stomps, but also giving them an Aura and high Protection anyways.

Variants:
Image

WHOMP- PL 6 (65): No Protection [-7]
-Whomps are clumsly-looking, bipedal Thwomps from Mario 64, traipsing about and being able to be knocked over, at which point you can Stomp the crack located on their backs and kill them.

TOX BOX- PL 6 (72):
-Similar to Thwomps, these guys have Oni tusks and move along pathways, filling them up entirely with their own bodies, requiring you to find the tiny "slot" on their backs where you can sit to avoid harm.

-Thwimps are an odd case in the Mario universe, in that they're a later subspecies that is SMALLER than the original one- they're rarely-seen enemies in Mario World, popping around levels in pairs, but only doing simple patterns with their little hops. They're actually as unkillable as Thwomps (especially in a game with no Hammers, and rare Star-Men), but they're rare enough, and rarely take part in "busy" portions of levels, so I never feared them overly much. Hitting them would be kind of a pain, but it's best to just avoid them.

Basically, the idea is that the Mushroom Kingdom and all of the Mario Games one looks cutesy and silly because of the art style. If you just describe the world itself, it sounds like something straight out of an old Pulp novel, some hybrid of the best Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs fiction.

Enemy (Mario & Luigi)
Reputation (Hyper-Violent)- Boom Booms basically thrash around madly, and are so dangerous they tend to be kept in solitary confinement until a hero works their way through a Fortress. Presumably, this is as much for King Koopa's minions' safety as anything.

Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 13 / Defenses: 12 (83)

-Boom Boom is the Mini-Boss du jour of Mario 3- he appears in the final room of the various Fortresses (and some of the regular levels in Dark World), lashing out at Mario & Luigi with rapidly-swinging arms. Alas, despite being a Mini-Boss, he's ridiculously-easy to defeat- I don't know a single player who ever had trouble with him, even though it takes three Stomps to finish him off. Oddly, you can kill him with Fire or Hammers, but nobody ever does that- he's easy enough to jump on. Despite being pretty ubiquitous in Mario 3, he took over TWENTY YEARS to make a reappearance, only showing up in Mario 3-D Land. Seriously, who did HE piss off? Then again, most of the Koopa Kids also vanished for years at one point, so the Mario franchise kind of went in a different direction for a long time.

-There is some disagreement over how many Boom Booms there are- whether or not he is an entire race, or just one being you fight multiple times... it's one of those things Nintendo never quite answers directly, probably because they don't care. A LOT of Japanese things (manga, etc.) kind of acts that way- they disregard a lot of intensive fanboy questions.

-Despite the ease of beating him in Mario 3, I figured I'd make him just below the Mario Bros. in terms of power. He's fast and jumps around a lot, and he's tough enough to take three Stomps.

Variants:
WINGED BOOM BOOM- PL 8 (85): Flight 2 (Winged) [2]
-A Winged Boom Boom appears in a couple Mario 3 levels, making him a bit more mobile.

POM POM- PL 7 (99): FIGHTING -1, "Boomerang" (Blast 6, Easily Removable), Ranged Attack 6 [14]
-Pom Pom appears alongside Boom Boom in the Mario 3D Land games, throwing boomerangs and generally being less deadly in melee.

-Reznor (named for Trent Reznor of "Nine Inch Nails" fame) is the name of the Mid-Boss creatures in Mario World, replacing Boom-Boom. Four ultra-adorable Triceratopses make up a giant rotating Ferris Wheel, where the immobile foursome breathe fire on Mario as the floor gives way beneath them. They're trickier more because of the rotating platform and the floor than their bad-assedness- each one only takes a single hit to kill, but their added size proves troublesome. Despite their cuteness, they've only ever made one real other appearance in the Mario series- in one of the side-scrolling handheld games.
-A Reznor's PL 6 isn't much, but Mario or Luigi has to defeat four of them at once, and they have to make tons of Acrobatics checks while doing it.

I really don't know why the Dream Machine keeps expelling vegetables, though..it's like if Superman just kept Kryptonite in his bedroom. Though apparently the Dream Machine originally belonged to the people that he'd overthrown. Also, since there's a Link's Awakening remake coming out, I suppose Wart finally got a physical reappearance of sorts. (Also, thinking about it, I can see the reasoning for him being in Link's Awakening: Subcon is a dream world, and the entirety of Link's Awakening takes place inside a dream, too.)
Oh, I wrote Fruit, but I think vegetables work, too.

Enemy (Mario & Luigi)
Obsession (Princess Peach)- King Koopa has a huge crush on the Princess, and this is reflected in his constant attempts to kidnap her.
Motivation (Power)- Bowser demands total power, conquering the Mushroom Kingdom, Dinosaur Land, and even the entire Galaxy at various points.
Relationship (The Koopalings, Bowser Jr.)- Bowser has a family, though sometimes the Koopalings aren't related to him. He has told Bowser Jr. that Princess Toadstool is his mother.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 29 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 13 (174)

-Named after a Korean dish (Kuppa), King Koopa was renamed Bowser in the West, and became the grand ultimate villain of the new Super Mario Bros. series, replacing Donkey Kong as Mario's arch-foe. They sort of based him off the character of the Ox Demon King in The Journey To The West (the basis for Chi-Chi's father in Dragon Ball), and he was combined with a turtle when a later designer got brought into the process. Overall, he's a pretty generic villain most of the time, but since he's one of the ORIGINATORS of "Video Game Big Bad", it fits- he kidnaps the Princess in some giant vehicle, takes her to a massive Fortress, and makes Mario & Luigi kill thousands and thousands of nameless Mooks on their way to rescue her. In some of the RPGs, he's a PLAYABLE character, making him ultra-awesome since he's a giant fire-breathing turtle who can throw Chain Chomps into the faces of people dumb enough to screw with him.

-In the first two Mario games, Bowser leaps about, tossing Fireballs at you (and eventually adds Hammers to the mix). In Mario 3, he's MUCH more leap-y, and eventually breaks through the floors in his own stage. Most of the time he's a big guy who can jump super-high and shoot Fire, and he's a PL 10.5 since he's rather tough for a PL 9-ish Mario to beat (and remember, Mario needs his Power-Ups to not be PL 8 all the time). This makes him effective, but not SUPER-dominant. In a campaign setting, Mario & Luigi together can beat King Koopa. He's nearly always Immune to the Stomp, and is tough enough to take multiple attacks- quite often, you have to dump him into Lava or Bottomless Pits to kill him, and he ALWAYS returns, game after game.

Variants:
Image

SUPER MARIO BROS.- PL 11 (177): "Hammers" Blast 7 (Extras: Multiattack) (AE: Fireball 9) (22) [3]

FAKE BOWSER- PL 10 (162): FIGHTING -2, STAMINA -1, PRESENCE -2, Ranged Attack -2 [-12]
-The Bowsers you face in all other castles in the first two Mario games are actually "Fake Bowsers", which will transform into common Mooks if you shoot him with fireballs, at which point he dies.

Image

SUPER MARIO WORLD- PL 11 (174): Bowser flies a Clown Car that can throw down Mecha-Koopas and Big Steelies (flying Buzzsaws- Blast 9). He can only be hit by his own Mecha-Koopas.

MARIO 64- PL 11 (175): Add Flame Cone 9 to Alt-Effects [1]

Image

DRY BOWSER- PL 11 (181): No STA Score, Immunity 35 (Fortitude Effects, Fire Damage) [7]
-Appearing in the New Super Mario Bros. series, Dry Bowser is actually the reanimated corpse of Bowser when he's dropped into lava early in the game. He fights on in this form, but is later revived by his son, Bowser Jr. The "Dry Bowser" variant appears in many later games as a Sub-Boss.

-Podoboos were ubiquitous Lava Bubbles with eyes that featured in the series ever since the first NES game. Lacking any sort of character, they were totally invincible, and would lash out at Mario every time he tried to jump over lava. Subsequent games have named them "Lava Bubbles", their name in Japan.

Ghostly Attack +6 (+3 Damage, DC 18)
Initiative +1

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +2, Fortitude --, Will +0

Complications:
Enemy (Mario & Luigi)
Responsibility (Shy)- Boos do not like to be looked at- if they see someone looking at them, they will immediately stop moving and hide their eyes. Thus, they can only attack from behind or the sides- never when an enemy is looking at them.

Total: Abilities: -20 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 72 / Defenses: 4 (64)

-Boos (Boo Diddleys in Mario 3) were unusual enemies in that they would chase you, but only if you weren't facing them. If you turned to look at 'em, they'd stop dead in their tracks, though you could still accidentally bump into them. They typically only appeared in "Dark" levels and in Fortresses, but Mario World added the Ghost Houses en masse, with each Land containing a massive amount of them, flying all over the place. This made them quite dangerous (individually, it's easy to avoid them) as their huge numbers made them hard to miss at times. They're apparently based off of one of Shigeru Miyamoto's co-workers' wife, who was very shy, but became enraged one day when her husband came home late from work.

-A Boo isn't really a major threat (PL 4.5), but when you add their numers, the fact that you can't hurt them (only a few later games leave in that possibility in unique circumstances), and their Immunities, they become quite nasty. Entire levels basically consist of nothing but enemies that you CAN'T HURT.

Variants:
* There are a ton of variants of Boos, but oddly most of them only feature in Super Mario World, which is the only one to emphasize Ghost Houses to that extent.

Image

BOO BUDDY SWARM, BOO BUDDY SNAKE- PL 5 (64):
-Swarms were the same as Boos, but appeared in large groups, where they would randomly become "solid" (still unbeatable) instead of transparent, and come flying in at you. A Snake is basically the same thing, but several Boos attached together, presumably doing Teamwork/Assist moves. Both debuted in Mario World, taking up a big part of the Ghost Houses.

BOO BLOCK- PL 5 (68): Morph 1 (Block) (Flaws: Limited to Single, Immobile Block) [4]
-A Boo Block is a Boo that can disguise itself as an unmoving Block, which allows you to jump on it temporarily and get out of one level. But beware- should it change back (and it will), it can hurt you!

Image

FISHIN' BOO- PL 6 (72): Fighting 7, Flight 3 (16 mph), Ghostly Attack is +4 with Reach [8]
-Fishin' Boos are Ghost Versions of the Fishin' Lakitu, carrying a little Fire thing instead of a 1-Up Mushroom or anything like that. Their higher speed makes them dangerous fighters, and you can't kill them like regular Lakitus either, making them one of the more elite kinds of Ghosts. They do not appear in any mainstream games other than Mario World, oddly.

Image

DISAPPEARING BOO BUDDIES- PL 4 (64): Fighting 5, Teleport 1 [0]
-Disappearing Boos only appear in one stage- the fantastic Sunken Ghost Ship level (featuring the sunken ship that King Koopa flew in Mario 3, giving this game excellent continuity and a really cool visual), where they are immobile (less Fighting), but Teleport across the screen, making them harder to avoid.

Image

OCTOBOO- PL 5 (64):
-Octoboos hail from Mario Galaxy, but appear only rarely. They act like regular Boos, pretty much.

The Boos also have a prominent role in the Luigi's Mansion games (despite that series also introducing new types of ghosts for mooks and bosses), as the main antagonist is King Boo.

Good news, everyone! I finally figured out why I never got that copy of the JLU Movie- they held all my mail at a separate office while construction was going on! So I can probably pick that up tomorrow and do builds for it in a week or two.

Terry Bogard is coming to Smash Bros.! (I really need to figure out if there's a way I can help out with the KOF builds, since I do want to see them, but I know how much of a pain they'd be)
