Enemy (Captain Syrup)- The "Wario Land" series featured the evil female Pirate, who often stole Wario's crap.
Relationship (Mona)- Mona is basically Wario's love interest, though she rarely appears.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 54--27 / Advantages: 25 / Powers: 9 / Defenses: 15 (146)

-Wario is an unusual character, but came about pretty naturally- so many heroes end up having to fight an opposite-coloured Mirror Image Villain version of themselves, so why not Mario? Wario (based off of the Japanese word for "bad"- warui- and Mario's name) basically decided out of nowhere to be a douchebag and take over stuff, which brought him into natural conflict with Mario. He was meant to give Mario a new kind of nemesis, basing him off of Bluto from Popeye (brutish but more cunning than the hero) and Stromboli from Disney's Pinocchio.

-Wario became the villain of the Game Boy's Mario Land series with Super Mario Land 2 (a game whose commercials I still distinctly remember- Wario's head floating around in a hypnotic pattern, taunting Mario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yoi55FFmQg), but since I was never into those games, I had no real concept of the guy, especially since he didn't appear in the more "mainstream" Titles that I owned. And the game was apparently so successful that the Mario platformers were immediately dropped for that system, and instead WARIO LAND became a thing, as you controlled the greedy anti-Mario in his own adventures. There was even a VIRTUAL BOY Wario Land, but the less said about that dreadful system, the better.

-Wario Land did well enough to produce Wario Land 2, 3 and 4 in addition to the Virtual Boy game, usually revolving around him gathering riches or stealing things back from ANOTHER greedy villain. Later games seem to show him as a mere rival to Mario instead of a dyed-in-the-wool enemy, and he doesn't seem to care much for Bowser, either. Despite his popularity (he's in virtually EVERY spin-off side-game in existence), the character has never faced Mario in the true-blue canonical games like Galaxy or Odyssey- not even the New Super Mario Bros. series! He was a selectable character in the Nintendo DS version of Mario 64 only.

-Wario is a stronger, beefier version of Mario with slightly-different alottments in his Skills & Advantages. He's certainly much wealthier, and has access to amazing technology at times. His strength allows him to pull off wrestling-style moves in Wario World (a GameCube 3-D Platformer), and he has access to world-specific items just like Mario. There's an evil version of Luigi called Waluigi, but the pun only works in Japanese, and he hasn't really mattered in any game- he's just a side character in all the Party/Sports games.

-Wario gains powers from "Pots" in the Wario Land games, giving him different forms. A Garlic Pot makes him Big Wario (same as Super Mario, really), a Jet Pot gives him a Jet Hat (Gliding Flight & increased Leaping & Speed), the Bull Pot gives him horns (Strength-Damage and he makes a Shockwave that Stuns enemies on the ground), and the Dragon Pot makes him a fire-breather for a limited time (it even works underwater!). In another game, he can become Drunk Wario ("Crazy Wario" in the West), who can burp a Blast to kill enemies, but is harder to control. Flat Wario is short enough to crawl into small spaces, and can Glide a bit. Fat Wario can Ground-Pound & break things easier (higher Strength). Electric Wario has a Shock Aura for a bit. Frozen Wario will be sent back uncontrollably, but this can be useful to break through obstacles.

And in the Wario Ware sub-series (Which are basically Minigame Compliations, except each "microgame" is about 5 seconds long and come out at a fast pace, making for some frantic fun as you keep having to adapt to each one's rules), he uses his wealth to start a video game company, but of course he's lazy and just delegates all his work to his subordinates (and doesn't pay them, either)

WALUIGI
First Appearance:
Mario Tennis (2000)
Game Appearances: Many Side Games only
Japanese Name: Waluigi (Warui + Luigi- "Bad Luigi")

-Waluigi is a rather thoughtless, simple character- while Wario is a character in and of himself, becoming an iconic Mirror Image Villain... Waluigi is just "Evil Luigi" and left at that. He appears only in Mario Tennis and other side-games, usually as a partner to Wario and enemy to Luigi, whom he hates. He also appears to have a crush on Princess Daisy, who despises him.

-The Angry Sun is somewhat legendary in a weird way- it's one of the rarest enemies in the entire Mario franchise (appearing in Mario 3 only twice- once in Desert Hill, and once in Dark Land), but is a permanent fixture of one level, in which it hangs in the upper-left corner for the entire stage as a background feature until at one point it just gets angry and STARTS CHASING YOU. It's one of those weirdly-iconic moments that always sticks with you, even though it wasn't THAT hard to defeat (just avoid it and finish the level- it's not that accurate). He later appeared in a Mario Kart game, and a Mario Maker one, but has largely has zero effect on the main series, possibly being just too odd an inexplicable (why is the SUN chasing you?).

-It's fairly high-level for a Mook, and is especially nasty because it's got some Immunities to common Mario tricks (Fire or Stomping), in addition to being one of the few enemies that can fly around in big arcs. Apparently both Koopa Shells and Hammers can kill it.

-Swoopers were exceptionally annoying, not because they were so dangerous (unless there were tons of enemies around, you could easily avoid them), but because they were numerous, tiny and didn't look cool (since there was no room for detail), meaning they were basically the "Goddamn Zubats" of the Mushroom Kingdom- numerous annoying, uncool enemies that were a waste of time. They actually appeared in Mario 64, something I didn't realize, though only in one stage- they are recolored blue here, which stuck for all future appearances- the green bats of Mario World were gone.

-Their diagonal attack pattern and tiny bodies meant that they were difficult to hit AND avoid, making them a real pain.

Waluigi has a surprising large fanbase that I never understood.

I think one of the most interesting things I've seen based on Waluigi is the old fangame, "Psycho Waluigi", where he ends up in some kind of subconcious world and gets psychic powers.

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +11 (DC 21), Toughness +6, Fortitude +6, Will +7

Complications:
Flaw Explanation (Devour Enemies)- Only certain creatures can be eaten by Yoshi- among them Goombas, Piranha Plants, Spike Tops & Spinies (in one gulp), as well as Koopas and Buzzy Beetles (which can be held and Spit Out). But certain enemies are immune- including larger foes like Chargin' Chucks, Dino-Rhinos, or any Stage Boss or Koopaling.
Responsibility (Dinosaur Land)- All Yoshis are honor-bound to defend Dinosaur Land, the same way Mario defends the Mushroom Kingdom. When Yoshi's friends are kidnapped by Bowser, he allies with the Bros. to rescue them.
Relationship (Mario & Luigi)- Yoshi is rescued by the pair, and promises to be a mount for them on their journey through Dinosaur Land. Soon, they become lifelong friends.
Responsibility (Panics)- If Yoshi is badly injured, he may panic, abandoning Mario to his fate. At times, he even runs into bottomless pits!
Responsibility (Land-Bound)- Yoshis cannot enter buildings for whatever reason, and will force Mario & Luigi to go into Ghost Houses & Fortresses alone.
Power Loss (The Stomp)- Yoshi requires some room to move- his Stomp will not work if he doesn't have enough clearance to get above something's head. Similarly, it will not work underwater.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 37 / Defenses: 10 (144)

-Yoshi is the signature character of Super Mario World, and set off a sensation as soon as he debuted- he's extremely useful in-game (he lets you take another hit, can one-shot many foes, spits shells easily and gives you bigger jumps), he's cute enough to appeal to kids, and he brings a whole new aspect to the game. He immediately became a recurring character, showing up in Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Golf, and all sorts of things, and even got a sequel all to himself in Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Sadly, almost all of the later Mainstream Mario games don't include him, as the "riding mechanics" were too complicated to include in even state-of-the-art games like Mario 64, but he at least showed up for Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy 2, and the New Super Mario Bros. games, providing us with the good old-fashioned ability to consume your foes alive in NEW generations of gaming!

-Interestingly, Yoshi was built quite a bit differently back in the day- he was more Theropodian, with an elongated body, short arms, and a big head. Later games turned him into a much more Mario-sized creature, making the riding scenes look a bit weird. This is largely to both make him cuter, and to make it more logical that he can pilot go-karts and playing Mario Party games and the like.

-Yoshi is similar to Mario in many respects, even possessing the Stomp power (but at a slightly higher damage ratio, in that Yoshi can do it and blow up Koopas in one shot instead of leaving them dazed). But there's also a bunch of other odd stuff, like the fact that he can't be hurt by Stomping on Spinies (an Immunity to Aura Effects with a minor Quirk that he can't just go up and punch them- it's gotta be a Stomp or the Tongue-power).

-He can Spit Shells like Mario could toss them, Fly with a Blue Shell (the cheapest power here, but is by far the most-useful in-game), create little Bursts with a Yellow Shell, or shoot Fire with a Red Shell (technically three separate Lines in-game, but I like a Split Blast here better). He can eat certain enemies, which is best reflected with a standard Damage effect (since technically, all that's happening is the enemies dying- none recover from being hit that way, so it's not a Snare or anything). Many of the enemies you'd WANT to kill instantly can't be hurt with the Tongue Attack, so Chargin' Chucks & large creatures are immune (though weirdly it's technically possible to eat a Blargg, though probably due to a developer oversight).

Variants:
Image
Image

BLUE YOSHI- PL 9 (132):
Flight is now Flight 2 (8 mph) (Flaws: Requires Shell) (2)
-No different in points, which is ironic, since Blue Yoshis were by far the handiest ones to have around. I mean, they have OMNIDIRECTIONAL FLIGHT- a huge game-breaker in a Platformer.

Image
Image

RED YOSHI- PL 9 (133):
"Fire Blast" Blast 6 (Feats: Split 2, Feature- Works Underwater, Improved Critical) (Flaws: Requires Shell) (10) -- [15]
  • AE: "Yoshi Wings" Flight 2 (8 mph) (Flaws: Requires Blue Shell -2) (1)
  • AE: "Sand Explosion" Damage 6 (Extras: Area- 15ft. Burst +1/2) (Flaws: Requires Yellow Shell -2) (2.5)
  • AE: "Yoshi Stomp!" Strength-Damage +3 (Feats: Indirect- From Material Above His Head) (Quirks: Athletics Check -1) (3)
  • AE: "Power-Slide" Damage 5 (Extras: Area- 30ft. Line) (Flaws: Requires Incline, Limited to Grounded Targets) (2.5)
  • AE: "Devour Enemies" Strength-Damage +3 (Feats: Reach) (Flaws: Limited to Certain Foe Types) (2.5)
-Red Yoshis can fire out their Blasts with ANY kind of shell, but now can't use the Shell Spit, but overall they come to 1 point more expensive thanks to the weakened Flaw on the Blast.

Image

YELLOW YOSHI- PL 9 (132):
"Shell Spit" Damage 6 (Feats: Ricochet 6) (Extras: Area- 60ft. Line +2) (Flaws: One Shot Only -2, Requires Shell) (Quirks: Deflects Off of Objects) (8) -- [14]
  • AE: "Fire Blast" Blast 6 (Feats: Split 2, Feature- Works Underwater, Improved Critical) (Flaws: Requires Red Shell -2) (5.5)
  • AE: "Yoshi Wings" Flight 2 (8 mph) (Flaws: Requires Blue Shell -2) (1)
  • AE: "Sand Explosion" Damage 6 (Extras: Area- 15ft. Burst +1/2) (Flaws: Requires Shell) (4.5)
  • AE: "Yoshi Stomp!" Strength-Damage +3 (Feats: Indirect- From Material Above His Head) (Quirks: Athletics Check -1) (3)
  • AE: "Power-Slide" Damage 5 (Extras: Area- 30ft. Line) (Flaws: Requires Incline, Limited to Grounded Targets) (2.5)
  • AE: "Devour Enemies" Strength-Damage +3 (Feats: Reach) (Flaws: Limited to Certain Foe Types) (2.5)
-Yellow Yoshis are a bit dull- the Sand Explosion is okay and all, but they feel like more of an add-on than anything else. Like "oh, we added Red & Blue variants, but we should have THREE y'know- what will the last one be?" "Well, I guess the only remaining Primary Colour is Yellow, so let's go with that" "But what's yellow? Sunlight? Sand?" "Uh, yeah, let's go with the last one".

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 11 (82)

-Mario has officially had so many games that I'm not even going to ATTEMPT at write up stats for every boss he's ever fought. Instead, I'll just re-use my old "Video Game Boss" template. Most guys have stats that can be found in here, mofidied accordingly. Most Mario Bosses after a point have ended up being very large, highly-strong creatures.

-The "End Boss" of a level is almost always a huge, dangerous adversary- one easily capable of matching the hero (and causing him to waste quarters in the arcade machine). They will generally always have some kind of weapon or Blast, and may take the "stands there and takes your hits while throwing out tons of varied attacks" style- they're bigger, tougher and meaner than the hero.

EXTRA ENEMY POWERS:
* Most enemies will have SOMETHING extra to use as an attack.

"Sword Guys": Equipment for +2-3 Damage. (1 point)
"Biters": Extra Strength-Damage on attacks. Often used by smaller enemies to do more damage. (1-4 points)
"Jumpers": Leaping 1, Accuracy & Defenses +2. For enemies that jump, their irregular attack patterns can make them much more annoying than common foes. (6 points)
"Diggers": Burrowing 4, Stealth 6, Startle, "Tremorsense" Ranged Area Touch. A lot of games include annoying little burrowers who can pop up out of nowhere and surprise you for more damage. (11 points)
"Soldiers": Equipment for Guns doing +4-6 Ranged Damage. Ranged Attack 4-6. A lot of Soldier-based games use guys like this. (6-11 points)
"Blasters": Blast 4-10. (2 points per rank)
"Flyers": Flight (May Be Winged). Plenty of games feature Flying Mooks, many of which can act irregularly, like the "Jumpers" do. (1-2 points per rank, plus Leaping-type bonuses)
"Firebreathers": Area Damage, often in a Line, Cylindar or an Arc (basically just like a Line, I guess). This can make them hard to dodge. (2 points per rank)
"Fireballs": Reaction Damage, for those guys who are always on fire, or made of electricity or whatever. (4 points per rank)
"Swimmers": Swimming 4, Environmental Adaptation (Aquatic), Immunity 2 (Drowning, Pressure). For Underwater Levels. (8 points)
"Ice Levels": Environmental Adaptation (Arctic), Sure-Footed, Immunity 1 (Cold). For the always-difficult-as-balls Ice Levels. (5 points)
"Climbers": Wall-Crawling 1-2. Many enemies can climb up on walls and then drop down on you. (2 or 4 points)
"Defenders": Protection (Limited to When Immobile -2). Some enemies specialize in delaying you or frustrating you into making mistakes, because they can hide under a shell of sorts when you attack them. They generally cannot attack back in this form. Think those little helmet guys in Mega Man games. (0.5 points per rank)
"Regenerating": Regeneration, for those guys who can respawn soon after you defeat them. (1 point per rank)
"Giants": Growth- for those guys who are SUPER-HUGE. Typically used as mid-level threats, but many Elite Mooks and Sub-Bosses are gigantic as well. In some cases, this can shoot their stats to high- either start with a lower-level guy, or use the nifty "Limited to Non-Strength & Stamina Growths" version of Growth to leave the stats un-changed. (2 points per rank)
"Martial Artists": Fighting +2-6, Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Improved Hold. (8-16 points)
"Robots & Undead": No Stamina, Protection, Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects). (30 points, minus Stamina difference)

-Magikoopas were annoying bastards who either Summoned guys for you to fight, or just Blasted away at you- this makes them rather elite, especially as the fast-moving blast moved straight across instead of looping patterns. Magikoopas were frequent in Yoshi's Island, and they got a Boss Version in Kamek, but they were otherwise forgotten until modern times.

-Magikoopas were notably colored incorrectly in their debut- the lightest part of their blue robes is on the back part instead of the front.

-Kamek has a curious role in the Mario series, in that he's the primary antagonist of Yoshi's Island, having abducted Baby Luigi, and gone after Baby Mario, requiring the help of the Yoshis. Kamek was thus seen as a caretaker of a young Bowser. Future games would show their current relationship, with Kamek as a largely-loyal henchman, and one of Bowser's most-respected and least-abused subordinates. He usually only appears in side-games and not the main series.

-Kamek's powers are truly vast and insane, many only showing up in the side-stories, including Precognition, Flight, Affects Others Growth, Summoning Minions in vast quantities, Blasts, and more. Like most Wizards, it differs constantly, and is usually "Whatever the writers think of".

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 33 / Defenses: 10 (127)

-Among the more controversial Mario characters to me was Bowser Jr., who seemed to essentially retcon out the Koopalings, who by 2002 had been missing from the series for almost ten years. The very existence of this NEW kid, without mention of the others, was a big "Well they're gone, so get used to THIS guy". Bowser Jr. is a shirmpy, pint-sized version of his father, and like the Koopalings, has no mother in the canon. He aids Bowser's schemes, frequently appearing as a Stage Boss (three times in his debut game, Mario Sunshine, you are forced to face him). When the Koopalings were reintroduced, Bowser Jr. was placed in command of them.

-Bowser Jr. just has the same Template as the other Koopalings, save for his natural Fire Breath ability, and will otherwise carry around different kinds of gear. He's got a bit of a knack for technology, and can drive vehicles as well. In side games, he also features things like Magic, Transformation Spells, and extreme strength or Ground-Pound abilities.

Wiggler

WIGGLER
First Appearance:
Super Mario World (1990)
Game Appearances: Mario World, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy 1-2, Mario Odyssey, Super Princess Peach, Mario & Luigi Series, New Super Mario Bros. Series
Japanese Name: Hana-Chan ("Flower"-chan)
Role: Easily-Angered Peaceful Mook
PL 6 (64)
STRENGTH
3 STAMINA 6 AGILITY 3
FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -1 AWARENESS -1 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Athletics 3 (+6)
Expertise (Mushroom Kingdom) 5 (+5)
Intimidation 2 (+4)
Perception 4 (+4)

Advantages:
Close Attack 2, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Improved Initiative, Move-By Action

Powers:
Speed 2 (8 mph) [2]
"Caterpillar Attack" Strength-Damage +1 [1]
"Insect" Movement 1 (Wall-Crawling) [2]
Immunity 10 (Stomp & Fire Damage) [10]

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +7

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +6, Fortitude +6, Will +0

Complications:
Enemy (Mario & Luigi)
Responsibility (Calm)- Wigglers are calm, serene creatures most of the time. But when struck or attacked, they quickly become enraged- a normal Wiggler will not be at full power until hit at least once. Most of the time, they are PL 4 creatures.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 4 (64)

-Wigglers are enemies only seen in the Forest of Illusion of Mario World, acting as one of the many "World-Specific" foes Mario faced in that game. Calm creatures at first, they were hard to avoid jumping on (but could still hurt you), at which point they would turn red and become enraged, barrelling after you at full speed. They don't show up in the Mario series often, but most of the later games have had at least one, often as a Boss.

Variants:
Image

FLUTTER- PL 6 (64): Flight 4 [8]
-Appearing only in Yoshi's Island, Flutters are the adult form of Wiggler, and behave in much the same matter, except they're flying creatures. They appear in only one stage of that game.

BOSS WIGGLER- PL 8 (70): FIGHTING +2, Protection 2 [6]
-Both Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine feature Wigglers exclusively as Stage Bosses, requiring more hits to take out.

Image

BIG WIGGLER- PL 8 (136): Close Attack 2, Immunity 80 (All Damage) [72]
-The New Super Mario Bros. games introduced Big Wigglers, which are almost like obstacles- they simply walk forward, damaging anything in their path, and cannot be damaged themselves.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 32 / Powers: 110 / Defenses: 7 (211)

-The most peculiar addition of Mario Galaxy was the introduction of the lovely Rosalina, the woman who safeguards the cosmos that's now threatened by Bowser and his minions. And she's peculiar because... it looks like they kinda just made an alternate version of Peach- same height, body shape, overall style, and even their friggin' HAIR is almost the same. A lot was made of them cloning an already-established character, especially notable since Peach is one of the most famous characters in video games.

-Rosalina works with the sentient, star-like Lumas and aids Mario in his quest to stop Bowser's black hole from destroying the universe. She appears very calm and reserved, though apparently much is made about her missing her death mother (making this possibly the only real death in the Mario series- considering they hit the reset button every time, it's a bit nutty).

-Rosalina has that annoying "Any power we can think of" thing, where she does little in-game stuff, but the story bits all feature her doing whatever the writers wanted her to do, so I just threw on Variable, because screw it. Kind of unfortunate, because I'd have liked to differentiate her from the others, but her one playable appearance (in Mario 3D World) is probably out of continuity and makes her like anybody else.

There's also her Smash Bros. appearance, but yeah, that's not in continuity, and mostly just gives her stuff from Galaxy like the Launch Star and Spin Attack, and being able to use Star Bits as a projectile (which is still cool), though the most intersting thing is that she has a Luma following her at all times that mimics her moves that acts as a secondary fighter of sorts that can also be KO'd itself.
