-Cerberus (spoken with a hard "C" in original script and spelled more like "Kerberos", but generally a soft "C" these days) is among the most famous of Greek Monsters, being the three-headed Guardian of Hades' Realm. The offspring of Typhon & Echidna, the two greatest of all monsters, Cerberus was basically impossible to sneak by- a few game heroes tried it over the years nonetheless, including Herakles (who basically straight-up asked Hades & Persephone to "Borrow" Cerberus for one of his Labours, and they ceded to his request, so long as Herc didn't hurt him). He shares a role with the Norse hound, Garm, as a protector of the realm of the dead. He's generally shown as having serpents for a tail and stuff, but this gets dropped in pop culture (much like how the Chimera usually has a third head only as a tail, and no Dragon's head like in Dungeons & Dragons.

-The MIMP figure is quite well done, with a lot of "action" for a top-heavy quadruped sculpted in one piece- Cerberus had a central head facing forward, and the other two facing sideways, along with one paw raised, giving off considerable "movement" for a static image. Not easy to do.

-Cerberus is a pretty tough character, and fearsome enough in Greek Mythology that only Herakles stood a chance. He's a perfect guard dog, with good Perception and even Second Chance for it (all the other heads!), not to mention his remarkable durability.

-Kind of an odd choice for the Monster in My Pocket line, Dryads are specifically the name for the nymphs (ie. magical, nubile women of divine origin who are involved with nature) of oak trees, though in popular parlance, the title has come to mean "Female/Tree Hybrids". I guess this was a common fetish for those who don't fear splinters, I dunno. Other types of Dryads included Epimeliads (apple trees), Daphnaie (laurel trees; named for Daphne, who transformed herself into a tree to avoid the sexual advances of Apollo and others), Meliae (who either birthed many Bronze Age heroes or nursed infant Zeus while he was hidden from Kronos, his father), and Hamadryads (who were actually so linked to their trees that killing the tree killed the nymph).

-The Dryad in the line is actually a shapeshifting tree that hanged people who wandered too closely, giving it a much more menacing aura. This monster doesn't even look human- it's a grimacing tree-beast. Threatening sure, and linked to the fact that trees were used for makeshift hanging gallows back in the day, but kind of an odd naming choice. There was an inflatable orange Dryad given away by a Spaghetti-Os thing in the early '90s as well.

-This Dryad is a PL 7 strangling creature, not a beautiful seductress.

Motivation (Unpleasantness)- The Harpies are famously ill-tempered, vicious, and cruel.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 9 / Defenses: 11 (91)

-Harpies are another of the most legendary of Greek monsters, being a band of bird-beasts with the heads of women. They were typically seen as beautiful in the oldest art, but have since been imagined as hideous, saggy-breasted creatures, the personifications of evil wind spirits (and stuff men hate about women- the likelihood of an unpleasant woman being called a "Harpy" is nearly 100%, going back to Shakespeare's time). They carried off evildoers, and it was said that those who disappeared mysteriously were "Carried off by the harpies". They were also called agents of Zeus, as they were among the more violent creatures at his disposal. There were initially two named (Aello & Ocypete), while the poet Virgil added Celaeno, Homer added Podarge, and other names were translated oddly over the years. In their most famous story, they are placed on an island with a King who'd displeased Zeus- the King was blinded and given tons of food... but could never eat it, because the Harpies got to it first. He was ultimately freed by Jason and the Argonauts, who got the sons of Boreas (the North Wind) to drive them off- in some tales, they died.

-Not one of the better figures, the Harpy is an "S"-shaped creature with a snaky body, hunched shoulders, tiny wings, and a big, witchy head. They appear a few times in the NES game, arriving in groups of three, making them a bit harder to kill compared to most 1-HP monsters.

-These Harpies are vicious, PL 7.5 creatures, able to fend off regular soldiers but not Godlings.

-The monstrous Leviathan is a creature from the Hebrew Bible, appearing in various books as a mysterious, all-consuming beast. In this sense, he probably represents the same "God vs. Monsters" stories that inspired Baal Hadad vs. Lotan, Thor vs. Jormungandr and other serpent-themed tales. In the Bible, however, Leviathan will be slain and fed to the worthy faithful, which is kind of different- in some parts of the Bible, Leviathan is female.

-The MIMP figure is a fairly solid "Serpent" design, with lots of scales, but a pretty goofy "Barney"-like face. He was sold as a Big Boy/Shreddies giveaway.

-Leviathan is often interpreted as a whale or a serpent, with indecision reigning among scholars, but the MIMP figure is said to be "Part-Dragon", so I went with a generic sea creature that has no gills, nor extra likes like a Kraken. It's also "miles in length" according to many sources, so it has tons of Growth.

-The Biblical Behemoth is a mysterious creature similar to an elephant, hippopotamus, or other large creature. He and Leviathan were demonstrated to Job about the futility of questioning God, who was the only one who could create or imprison these beings. Both may in fact have been referring to actual animals, confusing things further (Young Earth Creationists claim that he may be a sauropod dinosaur, as a powerful tail is mentioned). Every year, Behemoth roars, causing animals the world over to become less wild for a year, thus protecting more timid creatures.

-The MIMP figure is quite nice to look at, though rather odd- it's said to look like an "enormous hippopotamus", but is instead a bidedal, scaled hulk with an odd face like something out of an African tribe's headgear. In the NES game, Behemoths appear in the final stage, before the "Boss Rush"- despite his name and presumed durability, he's killed in one hit.

-I'm not statting that roar thing, lol. But otherwise, Behemoth is similar to Leviathan- enormous and powerful. He's said to be able to eat the world bare if he needs to, so he's definitely bigger than your typical pachyderm.

Okay, I'm gonna throw a random one out there- it turns out I missed a Power Instinct guy among the 57 or so characters that franchise introduced. He was the Final Boss of the last game in the series, and Koroko didn't realized I'd missed him until just now. This is just to get him out of the way :).

The third time he tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, he will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 5 + 10 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 13 (116)

-The Final Boss of the final Power Instinct game, Shinjuro appears to be a blue-skinned old man, but quickly transforms into an Oni-like muscular hulk. He is the only unplayable boss in the series- hacking is required to play as him. Shinjuro is said to be the child of a great samurai named Jubei, who left the family stating that the boy would only gain a surname if he proved himself worthy- Shinjuro has since become a legend, travelling around Japan attempting to become mighty enough to earn the respect of his father, who is surely dead by now. He apparently gained a surname, joining the Goketsuji family at the heart of the Power Instinct series.

-Shinjuro is a massive brute, unlike most PI characters, even the Final Bosses! He does +6 Damage to start with most of his moves, and can throw out a burst with Reach, a HUGE demonic hand rising out of the ground (taking up a good chunk of the screen), and more.

It could be that I missed this in your earlier posts, but how exactly was the "Monster in My Pocket" game played? You've made references to "point values". Was it a matter of that you reached into your pocket and pulled out a handful and then compared them against someone else's handful? Or am I just misunderstanding entirely?

I think there might have been rules for games, though there was also a board game that the figures could be used with.

From the site which quotes the packages:
You and your friends can play MONSTER WAR with your MONSTER IN MY POCKET monsters.

Every monster has a point value - either 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 points.

A 30 point monster beats a 25 point monster, 25 point monster beats a 20 point monster and so on.
So, um... you just win if your guy has more of a points value. That's it.

Yeah, evan as a kid I had wished there were more to it than that, so it could be a strategy style game

at any rate, I had a Behemoth. I kinda dug him. I used him alot like Juggernaut. He always charged and smashed through things and for some reason I always had him have an Ironhide personality. It was probably because of how squat he was and my particular Behemoth was red.

-Among the more obscure Monsters in the line, especially early in Series I, was Coatlicue, known primarily from a single stone statue. Coatlicue is the Aztec Goddess who gave birth to the Sun, Stars and Moon. She wears a skirt made of writhing snakes, and a necklace made of human hearts, hands and skulls (METAL), with a face formed by two serpents facing each other (creating the illusion of a central face)- this represents blood spurting from her decapitated neck, as she was sacrificed at the beginning of the present world.

-Coatlicue is both a mother and a devourer- one of the more violent aspects of an "Earth Mother", as the Earth also takes things back. She was killed by four-hundred of her children, and the Sun God Huitzilopochtli sprang forth from her womb fully grown, slaying many of them (the leader of the killers had her head cut off, and it became the Moon) and becoming the new central God of the Aztecs.

-The MIMP figure is very cool and detailed, and is more or less a plastic version of the stone sculpture found in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico- a blcoky representation of a figure, with a skull necklace, spread out hands, and two snakes facing each other, having sprung forth from the neck. It even keeps the skirt of snakes! I had never even heard of this thing until starting these builds, and I bought this one from a collector just from the visual!

-The figure's notes says that she was "once an Aztec Queen", exiled because of her "garbage mouth"- she has a deadly breath weapon, I guess. In the NES game, they appear as a foe in "The Orient" that ambles slowly towards you when you face it... but rapidly charges the second you turn away.

-Coatlicue here is a powerful, PL 10 Goddess-type character, but can be modified further with stuff the MIMP toy adds, like poison breath (Area Weaken).
