-One of the offspring of Typhon & Echidna, the progenitors of monsters, the Chimera is one of the most famous of Greek Monsters. It is famously triple-headed, sporting the heads of a lion, goat and a snake, though most modern incarnations have all three heads side-by-side at the front of the creature. The original version was some F'd up "lion's body with a goat's head sticking out the back, and a snake for a tail" thing. It is well-known enough that the term "Chimera" has been added to the lexicon of things with disparate parts stuck together. It is a rare fire-breathing creature in the mythos.

-The Chimera is classically Greek- a messed-up mish-mash of whatever creatures they thought were cool. And so we get the mighty, epic LION merged with the lethal, venomous Snake. And to COMPLETE the vicious ensemble, we add in the... Goat? Goats? Really? Maybe the Greeks REALLY hated being bit by the little bastards. The original version was really goofy-looking, but kind of creepy in an odd way. Modern takes on the creature tend to have the Lion & Goat heads coming out of the front, and the Snake has often been replaced with a Dragon. The Shining Force series of video games feature a Lion/Goat combo with a Snake for a tail, while Dungeons & Dragons features a three-head frontage of Lion, Goat & Dragon (colour depends). And oh yeah, most modern takes have wings, which is totally different from the Greek version.

-The Chimera threatened Lycia and neighboring lands until it was was slain by Bellerophon, who rode on the back of Pegasus- as he was airborne, Bellerophon was able to pierce the creature's hide with arrows, being safe from its fiery breath- the poet Homer suggests that Chimera was finished off by a lead spear, which melted in its throat when exposed to the flame.

-The MIMP figure takes most of its looks from the original Greek version, meaning it looks kinda dumb- a short-bodied, huge-headed lion with a goat's head sticking awkardly out of the back, and a snakey tail. They were another foe in the NES game as well, running forward in simple motions.

-So what I went with here was a Lion/Goat/Snake combo, using a Venomous bite in addition to a Split multi-attack that offers Radius Sight (since it's got so many heads), wings and a fifteen-foot length. I've never quite felt comfortable with D&D's Chimera, which was not any bigger than a Lion. I figure something like this should be HUGE, and capable of kicking some major ass.

-Ogres are a catch-all kind of monster- a large, humanoid being that typically eats people, especially children. Giants are often given "Ogrish" traits as well, particularly odd skin colors, body hair or a disproportionately large head. The name is French in origin, derived from the Etruscan God Orcus, who feasted on human flesh. Ogres don't appear in any one particular story that creates an iconic representation- they merely get used in countless Fairy Tales as a stock creature, including Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, and others. This has led to "Ogre" being a common monster in Fantasy realms, including as Elite Mook Food Snobs in Warhammer, generic "Early Ranked Characters Can Still Kill Them" fodder in Dungeons & Dragons, and more. The most famous example these days is probably Shrek from the once-popular 3D animated films.

-The MIMP figure is not bad, but generic. He's big, hunchbacked and has a big club for a weapon, with a pretty plain, beareded appearance. He's said to be eighteen feet tall. They are simple foes in the NES game, just walking forwards.

-This Ogre is fairly mighty- I took the one for my "Castellia" world and upgraded him in size to hit eighteen feet, making him a PL 8 menace.

The Invisible Man

46) THE INVISIBLE MAN
Origin:
Fictional Character (H.G. Wells Novel, 1897)
Role: Criminal Mastermind

FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 2
INTELLIGENCE 6 AWARENESS 2 PRESENCE 2

Skills:

Advantages:
Chokehold, Fast Grab, Improved Hold

Powers:
Concealment 2 (Vision) (Flaws: Permanent +0) [4]

Offense:
Unarmed +6 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Motivation (Mayhem)- The Invisible Man has been driven mad at some point (either before he experimented upon himself, or because of the drugs that did it), and now he commits crimes everywhere he goes and exhibits almost no morals at all.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 4 / Defenses: 9 (83)

-The Invisible Man was a character of serialized fiction, much like Pinocchio and other tales, and later gathered into a novel, leading to a much more famous film. It centers around a scientist named Griffin, who discovers a way to change his body's "refractive index" to that of air, so that he becomes invisible. Failing in his attempts to reverse his experiment, he goes mad, turning into a wanton criminal, first to pay his lodgings, then again after killing a man who followed him after he was chased by a mob, thus becoming an iconic character in fiction. Planning on a "Reign of Terror" that will terrorize the nation, Griffin is finally betrayed by an old medical school confidant and beaten to death by an angry mob.

-The Hollywood movie in 1933 starred Claude Rains (later of Casablanca) as the wild madman, engaging audiences with a classically hammy performance. It produced a number of sequence starring other actors, and made the character very famous, though typically only the "invisible person wrapped in bandages" imagery survives of the original concept when people reference it.

-The MIMP figure is one of the weaker ones, with a bandage-wrapped man slowly unfurling the bandages at the top of his head, a cane awkwardly stuck to his chest, and a pretty static pose. He's a chemist who's been driven insane by his drug, here.

-The Invisible Man indicates yet again that M&M has weirdly-cheap Concealment- given the bonuses invisibility gives you in real life and in the game, it's insane that you spend only four points. This guy's one 4-point power meant that he could terrorize an entire community for weeks, and could only be caught by his mistakes (walking through snow, leaving tracks).

-The Catoblepas is an obscure creature known primarily because a Dungeons & Dragons creature later used the name, but resembled more of a Jabberwokky. It was first described by Pliny the Elder in Ancient Rome, and was said to be a regular creature from Ethiopia (then a faraway nation that few had visited, but was technically reachable). It's usually said to be bull-sized, with a heady so heavy that the creature can only look down. Pliny said it had a stare that could turn people to stone or kill them. This was hardly an irregular thing prescribed to mythical beings, but is a fanciful description of something that might have been a wildebeest.

-The MIMP figure is so under-detailed and squat as to be completely forgettable, and has wings for some reason. His death-glare is mentioned, and he's said to be hundreds of years old, too. They appear very briefly in the NES game, flying down at the player before Chimerae and other flying creatures take their place.

-Catoblepas is a pretty basic animal- Water Buffalo-like, except for its Death Glare, which is a horrendous PL 8 Weaken effect.

-It's easy to forget that swamps were once places of fear and dread- modern civilization has really "normalized" things like this, but swamps were once notorious for people drowning in seemingly-fine water. Many cultures developed "Swamp Monsters" as a result of this- creatures of various types (Will O' The Wisps were light phenomena; the Bunyip was an actual monstrous beast)- the most enduring one turned out to be the plant-based monster that resembled the putrid muck found in these dark places. "Muck Monsters" debuted with 1940's It!, a short story. In this story, plant matter developed around the skeleton of a human, Roger Kirk, and animated itself. This story was later clearly ripped off The Heap in 1950s comics, and by Alan Moore for DC's Swamp Thing.

-The MIMP figure seems to take a lot from Marvel's Man-Thing, because of the viny tentacles hanging from its mouth. It's a bit of a static figure, holding its arms up at an angle and being pretty broad, with some light detailing on his heavyset body.

-This Swamp Beast is a PL 7 grappler- definitely a fright for normal people.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 3 / Defenses: 7 (99)

-Jenny Greenteeth is a "River Hag", common to many towns and regions across England- tales of "hags" are common to all cultures, and represent an omnipresent prejudice against women far out of their child-rearing years- seen as saggy, deformed creatures in direct opposition to the comely maidens they once were, they are easily turned into vicious monsters in folklore. River Hags fill the roll of many Lake & Swamp Monsters- they are warnings to young children to stay away from bodies of water. The reasoning is obvious- the water will easily drown them- but since kids are a little bit more literal and need more convincing other than "the fun water will kill you", monsters like this are created. JENNY GREENTEETH, kids will stay away from. Other, similar creatures are Peg Powler and the Grindylow, and her name is often "Jinny", "Jeannie" or "Wicked Jenny". Similar creatures include the Russian Rusalka, the Japanese Kappa, and Australia's Bunyip.

-Jenny Greenteeth is said to live around Liverpool and Lancashire, and will pull children and the elderly into rivers to drown them. She has both green skin and green teeth, and inspired Meg Mucklebones in Legend. A character by that name appears in some Dungeons & Dragons modules, and she and others like her clearly inspired the Hags common in that game, particularly the waterborne ones like Sea Hags.

-Jenny has gotta be one of the worst MIMP figures- a sloppy, mucky shape with a skeletal head and long hair, both of which are given random bright colors. An unpainted orange one is seen as a cereal premium in the UK. They were really not doing their best work with this one.

-A similar "River Creature" like Jenny Greenteeth, Bloody Bones is also sometimes called Rawhead, Tommy Rawhead, or Rawhead-and-Bloody-Bones (that's weird). He was also part "Boogeyman", meant to cow children into behaving. He's said in Somerset to live in dark cupboards beneath the stairs, and brave enough kids could peep through the crack and see him above a pile of naughty children's bones, blood running down his face... and then he'd get you anyway. The tales originated in England, but extended to the Southern U.S.- Rawhead is a head with no skin, and Bloody Bones is a dancing headless skeleton. Rawheads have appeared in The Dresden Files and Supernatural as a Mook.

-The MIMP figure is pretty forgettable- a goblin-like, crouching creature holding a giant femur bone, looking like something out of Ernie Roth's gallery.

-The Boogeyman is a universally common story- a monster that terrorizes misbehaving children- obviously, a tale told by frustrated parents to get their children to act properly. This is such a universal trait of humanity that nearly every culture on Earth has some equivalent monster. They name derives from the Middle English "bogge" ("frightening/scarecrow"), from which we also get "Bugbear". Many Boogeymen have claws or sharp teeth, and most are spirits, though demons, witches, and other things are seen. Eastern Europe features the "Sack Man" who carries away naughty children, the Div is an Azerbaijani giant that eats them, and to the surprise of literally no one, Germany has dozens of different figures representing similar creatures.

-Monster High's Twyla, a "Best Friend" character who became part of the Main Cast because Jonquil Goode was such a talented Voice Actress and the creators fell in love with her, was said to be the daughter of the Boogeyman, but his stuff was used as a kind of Plot Device to accomplish just about everything (like turning the cast into ghosts).

-Another really poor MIMP figure, this one has oddly splayed-out legs, one arm sticking way back, and a silly face. He's also one of the multi-colored ones that never turn out well.
