45) SPRING-HEELED JACK
Origin:
Mystery Sightings (1837, UK)
Role: Leaping Demon
Oh god, how much I hated this figurine. Between me and my sister we got like 6 of them back in the day and they were awful. Due to the pose, Jack' shoes had an extremely small surface area, which meant that even a small amount of warping in the plastic made him impossible to display.
LOL, that's amazing, and would be terribly annoying. Were they in random packs, so you couldn't decide which ones you wanted?
Yep, they were all the rage around here for a while. A friend of mine even got the "display case" that was sold only by mailing a certain number of packs to the producer.

-The biggest bird of all, and one repeatedly brought up in ancient literature as a real creature, was the Roc (sometimes called the Thunderbird). Such a massive, WHALE CATCHING predator of course could obviously never exist based off of what we know about science, flight, biology, evolution, and the general size of predators relative to prey. But it's still pretty honkin' cool to think of a 60-foot bird with a 120-foot wingspan flying in, grabbing a Humpback Whale, and flying off to eat it.

-Rocs, or "Rukhs", appear in Persian and Arabian folklore, especially the Sinbad portion of The Arabian Nights, in which his fellow sailors break a Roc egg and attack the gigantic chick within, then must deal with the gigantic parent. Rocs don't appear much in myth, and not a lot of movies use them, likely due to problems scaling such a thing in shots (Krakens and stuff, you can just show random limbs and the like- a giant bird you'd almost have to show the whole thing). Hard to animate properly when it wouldn't fit in any frame with other characters in it, and WAY too hard to put into live-action stuff.

-The MIMP figure isn't overly great- ironically, it's actually REALLY TINY, as the large-ish wings require the mould of the creature's body to be quite small or it won't be pocket-sized anymore, so you get what looks like some generic, tiny bird. The NES game uses them as egg-dropping foes, also making them as big as any other creature.

-The Roc stats up as a PL 12 nightmare while fairly short on points, but it's packing the standard "Giant Creature" array of stuff. It's Wings can call up huge storms that push everything away, damage creatures in a massive wing-slap, or just knock everyone down.

IIRC Rocs are so goddamned metal that even the Djinn are afraid of them, as the original Aladdin story ended with the boy losing the Djinn when the magician he stole the lamp from tricked him into wishing for a Roc egg which pissed the Djinn off enough to leave since Rocs eat Djinn.

I remember that. Also, relatedly, strangely enough the MIMP line has both Genie and Djinn as separate things (but both were unreleased)

The third “monster of Armageddon” was Ziz, according to Jewish legend, essentially an early version of a Roc-a monster of the sky, corresponding to the beasts of the land and sea.

There's apparently a trend in China of legit MMA fighters going around and beating the shit out of "Kung Fu Masters". This guys details some theories as to why this keeps happening, and why so many frauds are around, teaching despite never having gotten into fights before.

Here's another article about an "accidental dissident" who proved how fake Tai Chi was by beating the asses of 17 "masters" is a row, while himself being just a standard-issue MMA fighter: https://deadspin.com/he-never-intended- ... 1838706430

Reminds me of the hilarity of Black Belt Magazine printing article after article about frauds spouting off their bullshit... and the only time they ever wrote an article doubting a martial art was the friggin' *UFC* of all things, because they couldn't figure out why this grappling style was taking apart all of the martial arts they thought were good.
That's not really surprising. Based on what little I've read, the Communist takeover of China was a terrible blow to the martial arts community. A lot of work was done to turn the martial arts into more of a competitive sport and artistic dance than anything. Sparring was heavily discouraged to where most actual combat experience was gained through street fighting. Masters that didn't like this were apparently forced to flee, stop teaching or in some cases, possibly killed. If I remember right, this lack of full contact sparring was something Bruce Lee criticized them of.

There are certainly health benefits to modern martial arts forms in China and there's still legitimate combat knowledge to be found there. But if you don't train for a fight and a fight shows up, you probably aren't going to win it.

What's sad is that historically, China had a wealth of martial arts styles that were created and proven during periods of war and conflict with other schools, the idea of cross training and developing your own style was a regular thing, and there was a huge variety in what you could learn, from striking to grappling to weapons to meditation.

Chinese martial arts basically needs to go through a re-learning period, and how possible that is with the current government is questionable.

-Lamia are a creation of Greek Mythology, and was the name for a singular creature- a woman who had a tryst with Zeus, and was punished by a jealous Hera with the deaths of her children, and an eternal sleeplessness. Insane with rage, she became a child-devouring monster, and eventually a "bogeyman" whose name was used to scare naughty children. The tale is rather vague, with serpentine, goat-bodied or comely Lamias being common- many paintings are of innocent-looking lithe seductresses. D&D's Leonine Lamia is the only one I can find of that type- the vast majority of images are of things closer to their Yuan-Ti or snake-bodied women in general. Lamiae are used to explain Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or used as a general insult to "meddlesome busibodies" who muck things up in society (oh man is that ever relevant today).

-In MIMP, the Lamia is said to be a vampiric blood-sucker with a penchant for keeping eyes- humorously, the figure is literally HOLDING A PAIR OF EYES in order to justify this. She looks like a standard-issue scrawny, hideous woman, with no animal portions.

-This Lamia is more of a standard hunter/killer than the D&D version, which was an Illusionist who carried weapons.

-Zombies have come to be known as a genre unto themselves- the lowest-tier Undead in many Fantasy settings, as well as a perfect "Unending Horde" threat in horror movies. But the zombie itself has its roots in the folklore of Haitian Voodoo, with English-speaking writers being all "THEY USE DRUGS TO ENSLAVE PEOPLE, YO!". In some versions, a necromancer would revive the dead to serve him. In other tales, people would be drugged into a near-death state, then dug up by immoral men usually for the purposes of cheap slave labor, which their stupefied victims would carry out without complaint.

-Zombies were uncommon threats, but would occasionally appear in films of the 1930s & '40s, but Night of the Living Dead would change everything in 1968- overnight, Zombies became a cinema smash. The genre faded out in the 1980s, but came roaring back in recent years, to the point where I'm just entirely sick of the whole thing, as they became extraordinarily over-used.

-The MIMP figure is decent enough, but unspectacular- seeming almost Frankensteinian, with stitched clothing. They are bottom-tier foes in Stage One of the NES game, shambling forwards and being easily beaten.

-A Houngan is literally just the word for a male priest in Haitian "Vodou" (the female counterpart is called a "Mambo"), but Monster in My Pocket has uncharitably made them an actual Undead creature, said to summon zombies, instead of just being there to continue the relationship between the spirits and the community. In actual Vodou, priests are there to communicate with lesser spirits, known as "Loa", as God ("Bondye", related to the French word Bon Dieu, meaning "Good God") himself is considered unreachable. The religion itself is tied into a massive creole of various African traditions, altered with the slave trade and proximity to many other religions in the New World, including Catholicism (most Loa are tied to a specific Catholic Saint, as both are tied to certain aspects of life). The term "Voodoo" is more correctly used for the Louisianan variant, which is even MORE of a Creole. The creation of zombies and things like "voodoo dolls" are actually more akin to folk magic- the talents of a "bokor" (Sorcerer), not priests of the Loa.

-The MIMP figure is alright, looking like a zombified version of a typical houngan, with a real skull face instead of the "Baron Samedi" look made famous by James Bond and the WWF's Papa Shango.

-I made the Houngan here a Zombie, but added in aspects of Magic, as they are said to be able to summon Zombies themselves.

FIGHTING 5 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Intimidation 6 (+6)
Perception 4 (+4)
Stealth 6 (+7)

Advantages:
Equipment (Axe +3), Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Level Drain), Startle

Powers:
"Graveyard Dweller"
Senses 1 (Low-Light Vision) [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +5 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Axe +5 (+5 Damage, DC 20)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +5, Fortitude +5, Will +2

Complications:
Hatred (Living Things)- Ghouls seek nothing more than the destruction of all life.

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 6 (45)

-Though Ghouls are now often thought of as undead, they began as generic demons and monsters in Pre-Islamic Arabian folklore, where they were associated with graveyards, and consumed human flesh- female "Ghulah" would lure men into their homes, then eat them. Others disguise themselves as hyenas and lure people into the desert for the same purpose. It wasn't until One Thousand and One Nights was translated into European languages that European society became familiar with the notion of a ghoul, and they were at first much more commonly-seen than zombies- no less than George Romero considered the creatures in Night of the Living Dead to be "ghouls", picturing the Carribean creature when he heard the "Z-Word". Nowadays, the term is often heard for creepy, death-obsessed things being seen as "ghoulish", or as a catch-all in Monster High and Vampirina as a cutesy monstrish term for "girl".

-The MIMP figure is pretty plain- just a fat guy with his tongue sticking out, dragging what I assumed was a shovel behind him (for purposes of grave-robbing), but I guess it's an axe. The NES game uses them as axe-throwing baddies.

-The Ghoul is tougher than the Zombie, but is still only PL 5- a mere "Mook" compared to other creatures.

Image

101) GHILAN (aka "Shapeshifter")
Origin:
Folklore (Pre-Islamic Arabian Tradition)
Role: Mooks, Soulless Monsters, Unending Hordes
PL 6 (100): STRENGTH +2, FIGHTING +2, Shapeshift 4, Morph 3 [55]

-"Ghilan" is just the plural of the Arabic word "ghul", which is where we get ghouls from. The Ghilan in MIMP is more akin to the shapeshifter in many Arabic stories (which would also go to an unreleased figure- the Djinn Shapeshifter). The figure is truly weird- a limbless creature with a wide open mouth, so large that you can see right through it. Here, it looks more like an amorphous blob, befitting the "Shapeshifter" status.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dinosaurs cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily manipulate objects.
Weakness (Cold Climates)- The Age of Reptiles was a much hotter time period than our own. Creatures from that era will be more susceptible to Cold and Ice-based attacks.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 41 / Defenses: 18 (108)

-EASILY the most famous dinosaur ever, and just about every kid's favourite animal, and probably the most studied dinosaur ever as well. Debates still rage over just what kind of a hunter it was- it's clear it engaged in some carrion-eating and kill-stealing, and had among the greatest senses of smell of any animal ever, but there's good evidence of actual hunting practices. It could've easily outrun a human being, and probably most other large dinosaurs as well (any physics-rules that meant T-Rex couldn't run likely also disqualify most of it's prey), and it's bite has among the highest G-forces in animal history. And those tiny lil' arms? Each one is apparently capable of lifting over FOUR-HUNDRED POUNDS, despite being a metre long each.

-The past several years haven't been as kind to it's rep as the "King of Beasts", since we now know of various predators that were larger in size, but Tyrannosaurus Rex (and seriously? Is there a cooler name in the entire history of the world?) still has the most powerful bite, and the nastiest teeth. Teeth like steak knives, able to bite off enough meat at once to feed an entire human family for a year, a skull larger than a man, and reasonable estimates imply that it could bite through solid BONE- something very few other animals are capable of. The Asian Tarbosaurus (itself VERY similar to T-Rex, so much so that they could easily be the same animal) is a near-exact replica.

-The T-Rex is a singular oddity in the MIMP line- it is the only creature in the whole thing that ACTUALLY EXISTED IN SCIENTIFIC RECORD. I guess you could theoretically count Witches, Houngans and other things, but none of those are what the toyline makes them out to be. The T-Rex figure is a big odd, in that it's more Godzilla-esque, with large, muscular arms held into four-fingered fists- something unknown to the history of theropoda. T-Rex is also the first creature in the line to "repeat", as it appears again in the Dinosaurs in My Pocket set, then again in their funky-colored "skeletal" variant later on. The NES games uses them, but there they more closely resemble the 1980s' idea of a T-Rex- they stand in a "tripod" stance (tail on the ground), with tiny arms. And fire breath, because Godzilla. In the comic book, he was apparently huge-sized, towering over all the other monsters, and had to be defeated by the growing Swamp Beast.

-At PL 11, I feel that one T-Rex would easily challenge a party of adventurers for a short while- and deserves to be a notch above Elephants (PL 9), Triceratops (PL 10) and others, and that he should be a step beyond Allosaurus, who more easily fits a PL 10 animal. More "standard" versions of the beast can be PL 9-10: I've seen guys like Pyro finish off a T-Rex in one hit in certain comics. A +13 Bite with 7 ranks of Penetrating and 4 ranks of Improved Critical (meaning he rolls a Crit 25% of the time)? Yeah, you don't want none of that.

One of the most interesting bits of dino-trivia I recall is that no T-Rex skeleton ever was complete, the final bones of the tail were often missing.

Funny thing about T-Rex and other theropods is... of all the weird cryptids, mix & match critters, and monsters in all human mythology and folklore... nobody EVER created monsters Ike this. A Tyrannosaurus, with its tiny front limbs, oversized head, and ostrich-like gait, is so friggin’ crazy that the most imaginative storytellers in human history couldn’t come up with it.
