Oh geez, I kept wondering where I was seeing Hummingbird's design from. The powers are at least a little different, I think (no Teleport/TK powers).

I think all the NW team members who were killed in Stamford have since been seen alive, Night Thrasher and Namorita have appeared recently and I think Microbe is one of the many ressurected mutants living on Krakoa.

-Seriously, Yost added TWO prior characters of his from other series into The New Warriors. Oh well- writer's prerogative. Selah Burke is possessed by the Carrion Virus in an issue of Superior Spider-Man Team-Up, and is saved by Ock-in-Spidey's-Body- it turns out that she's the previously-unknown daughter of jobber villain Lightmaster. In return, she saves Spider-Man from the previously-Mind Controlled Superior Six (Chameleon, Electro, Sandman, Mysterion & Vulture). Finding Otto condescending, she leaves on bad terms. By this point, she's become the new Sun Girl, taking the name from an old ally of the Jim Hammond Human Torch. Next, she appears on the relaunched New Warriors book.

-Burke is a good engineer who's invented her own gear- a Blaster Suit and Light Guns. This is a bit redundant, so I made one stronger, and the other Multiattack in addition to being Easily Removable.

They will also suffocate after 10 minutes outside of water, unless they have a special helmet or serum.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 32 / Defenses: 15 (132)

-Water Snake joins the new New Warriors team after watching her people slaughtered by the High Evolutionary's minions. A Handmaiden of Lady Namora (Namor's cousin, and a 1950s heroine), she's a trained fighter, and uses Hydrokinesis to do battle, making her a combination Blaster/Scrapper build. There's little else to go on with her, though- it's pretty clear that she's the stand-in for Namorita on the most-recent New Warriors book, but it didn't last long enough to give her any meaning as a character. Statistically, she is largely a fairly strong Weapon-User character, nothing special.

Sprocket

SPROCKET (Amelia Barnhardt)
Created By:
Fabian Nicieza
First Appearance: Night Thrasher- Four Control #2
Role: Team Pilot

-Sprocket was the replacement for Chord on the Warriors, used while he was injured after being called out in his betrayal of Dwayne and the others. A big-mouthed, vulgar woman, she was kinda fun, and carried around a huge weapon while carting the team around in a helicopter, but didn't get up to that much. She was introduced because Nicieza thought it would be "too Speed Racer-ish" to have the team fly around on their own, so they needed a pilot. She was kept on the team, and ended up being revealed as the ex of Cardinal, who was the father of her child after a one-night stand! She would eventually leave the team soon after Dwayne was kicked off of it. Much later, we would find out that her daughter was Meteorite, the member of the Redeemers who'd been badly crushed by Graviton.

Nova's Friends & Foes

Post by Jabroniville »

NOVA VILLAINS:
-Richard "Don't Call Me Dick" Rider had a little motley crew of baddies in his solo series, but truth be told, they all look a little lame and forgettable. Since the 1970s seemed to be pretty much an era of Journeyman Villains and oddballs, that's par for the course, but I can't imagine it helped the sales of his series, which is why he vanished for like fifteen years before getting another chance.

Here are the guys I statted up only a short while ago:

The Champions of Xandar:
Comet
Crimebuster
Nova-Prime
Powerhouse I (Davan)
Protector

The Lumphumoids

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE LUPHUMOIDS (Zorr, Kraa & Xira)
Created By:
Marv Wolfman & John Buscema (Zorr), Chris Marrinan (Kraa), Simon Furman & John Royle (Xira)
First Appearance: Nova #1 (Sept. 1976- Zorr), Nova #14 (Feb. 1995- Kraa), Death Metal #2 (Feb. 1994- Xira)
Role: Background Villain

The Lumphumoids:
-These characters are a bizarre trio of one-offs- two threats to Nova, separated by twenty years (Kraa is a neat homage to the earlier Zorr), and an unaffiliated character who had her relation explained years later, in an Official Handbook.

ZORR:
-Zorr was a Luphomoid who apparently destroyed the planet Xandar (using his starship) and personally killed Rhomann Dey, the Nova of Earth's space sector (or whatever). The Luphomoid homeworld had been destroyed by Galactus years ago, with only offworld survivors like Zorr remaining- he swore vengeance against Galactus, while building power. Dey's replacement, Richard Rider, fought Zorr, but he was destroyed by a beam from Dey's spaceship- Dey used his last bit of strength to power up the ship's energies and kill the villain now that he was distracted by the overpowered neophyte, Rider. Later, the space-pirate Nebula claimed to be Zorr's DAUGHTER, which was an interesting bit of mythos considering her other "thing" was claiming to be the granddaughter of THANOS.

Image

KRAA:
-Almost 20 years later, Nova fought a guy named Kraa, who was Zorr's brother. Kraa had built a reputation out of slaughtering members of the Nova Corps., and slowly came to Earth over the course of a few issues, seeking Nova out. However, some allies (including ANOTHER GOOD-ALIGNED SKRULL) helped him out, distracting the powerhouse villain enough that Nova, now decked out as Rhomann Dey (whom Rider helpfully pointed out had killed Kraa's brother, Zorr), surprised the villain and knocked him out. Kraa never reappeared, having only appeared in the '90s book.

Image
Image

SPIRIT (Xira):
-A while later, a random side character would be announced as Zorr & Kraa's sister Xira- as "Spirit", she appeared in the Marvel UK title Death Metal), and was a Death-worshipper who sought her own demise, annoying Death Metal to carry out the task. She therefore defended him from enemies like Brassknuckles and Mys-TECH, but never appeared again in the Marvel UK tales. It would in an Official Handbook where she would inexplicably be revealed as a relation to Zorr & Kraa- a weird link that was apparently initiated by her creator, Simon Furman, himself. She later worked with Nebula at the beginning of Annihilation, along with dozens of other discarded female Cosmic characters, but was later shown to be slain by the Annihilation Wave, as Nebula came upon her corpse as it was being eaten by space-bugs.

Their Vague Powers:
-Zorr seemed to be in the "Class 75"-ish level of strength, according to Marvunapp, but walked around carrying a big gun. Kraa was similarly-powerful, but was eventually KO'd by '90s Nova. She was one of those "Good Fighter" characters who had an energy staff that also shot blasts.

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +6, Fortitude +7, Will +4

Complications:
Responsibility (Outcast)- Megaman is faceless, and thus looks very bizarre to others.
Relationship (Caps, Carla)- Megaman's nephew is Caps, and though he initially blamed Caps for his being burned in the mysterious black pond, he got over it. When he finds Carla having moved on with another man, Megaman attacks him in a fit of rage.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 12--10 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 54 / Defenses: 11 (125)

-The creation of a presumably drug-addled mind, Megaman is the brainchild of Marv Wolfman for his Nova series, and was a hiking camper who was trapped in a mysterious black pond and badly burned- reviving from the suspended animation a million years in the future, he was healed & remade by the mysterious "Protector" (a living molecule with no knowledge of faces; she redesigned him without any facial features) and meant to be his companion. Eventually escaping her, he jumped back into the pond, thus bringing him back to modern times (because that's how stuff worked).

-Megaman, furious over his situation, attacked his hiking partner (his nephew, Caps), but seemed to have a change of heart, and, following a fight with Nova (who had to stop, as his parents' home got set on fire during the fracas), attempted to get Caps to explain the situation to Megaman's wife. Unfortunately, she'd moved on to a new man, who Megaman promptly attacked, thus creating ANOTHER fight that drew in Nova. The battle took place in a funhouse, but then THE PROTECTOR showed back up again, and delighted to have found her "mate", abducted the terrified villain and left with him, suggesting they'd be together "Forever and ever".

-Naturally, this insane story was completely forgotten and brushed under the rug... except Mark Gruenwald is a thing. And OF COURSE Mark would remember this character for the famous "The Laboratory on The Stranger's Homeworld" panel, in which he had his artist draw dozens and dozens for forgotten and one-off alien/space guys in the lab, thus providing me with dozens of situations where I have to type all that out. It's like Al Kraven's "Supervillain Zoo"!

-Megaman is a very versatile character for a jobber, giving given "Elemental Control" by The Protector to help himself survive in their future. He's vaguely super-strong and can apparently function just fine with no face, but is largely even with 1970s Nova.

It would have been a funny little inside joke in the Marvel VS Capcom games featuring Nova and Capcom's Megaman for Nova to mention that he remembers Megaman looking different.

I actually have the comic featuring the poor dope, and his story is actually extremely sad. He was just some guy who had an accident, woke up a million years in the future and was transformed into some inhuman creature by what amounts to a lonely Cosmic Entity. He was then basically going to be said Entity's mate / pet, and did his best to escape back to his home time and life, and it was understandable that his SAN had taken a beating by this point. And when he gets back to find his wife has moved on, he reacts poorly, only for said Entity to be capable of time travel and comes back to find him. Megaman begs his wife to say anything, to even acknowledge his existence or say that she loves him, because the Entity will apparently let Megaman stay if it's clear someone else wants him. Instead, his wife coldly looks away and lets Megaman get dragged back to some post-Apocalyptic world by a Cosmic Entity, screaming the whole while and never to appear again.

His wife comes off as a HUGE bitch, and if I remember right there were implications she'd been cheating on her husband, and coldly chose to just let some entity take him away and get rid of what she saw as a "problem" in her life. Nova even outright states she didn't deserve the devotion her husband had for her. Because the guy had primarily fought his way back through time to be with her because he genuinely loved her.

The story's got some very Lovecraftian vibes to it, with some poor dope being wrapped up in cosmic events beyond his control, being the plaything of some eldritch abomination, and the reveal that humans can be at least as monstrous. Nova comments that for as inhuman as it was, the Entity at least genuinely seemed to love/care about Megaman, while his wife did not. Nova hoped that eventually the poor guy would find some peace in that strange future.

Though the Entity being able to Time Travel does create this plot hole where, if it was lonely, it could just time travel to another point in history where it could have all the company it wanted.

Well, this Megaman is certainly no super fighting robot. And even though I know a lot of jobber,s I'd never seen this guy, either. Also, huh, it seems like you'd given Xira/Spirit stats earlier in the thread, in the "Letter S" set.

The Shadow Consortium

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE SHADOW CONSORTIUM:
Created By: Chris Marrinan
First Appearance: Nova #8 (Aug. 1994)
Role: World-Conquering Conspiracy Wannabes

-These guys were your everyday generic "clandestined conspiracy to rule the world" group, which had hundreds of agents across Earth. Working with the alien Aakons, who supplied them with great technology, the Consortium had big plans to steal some American space tech, but Nova got involved. They sent the Shatterforce after him, but they and most of their other agents (including Diamondhead & The Corruptor) were defeated, ultimately leading to their discovery by S.H.I.E.L.D. and defeat by the New Warriors. The Aakons were revealed to be intending to blow up the planet with a death-weapon, and sacrificed most of their human agents in the process. They attempted to destroy the Earth, but Nova successfully drained their weapon of power (it ran on solar energy using a false sun, so he flew into space to absorb some of the energy and fire it off elsewhere)- the resulting explosion kills almost all of the Aakons and the rest of the Consortium's top brass.

Shatterforce

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

SHATTERFORCE:
Created By: Chris Marrinan
First Appearance: Nova #8 (Aug. 1994)

-This trio of complete tools were created by writer/artist Chris Marrinan for the revamped Nova solo book in the mid-90s. They were the primary agents of the Shadow Consortium, and sent to kill Nova. They managed to defeat him while he was at a barbecue with his friends, but two of them commandeered their alien spaceship and flew it around, distracting them enough that Nova recovered and the good guys escaped. Warhead, carrying a grudge against Nova for some reason, rammed the ship and it exploded, killing him. The team reappeared a few issues later, Warhead being revived by the Consortium. They were ultimately beaten when the New Warriors invaded the Consortium's base on Earth.

-Shatterforce was largely comprised of reckless sadists and buffoons- a true team for the '90s. With goofy names like "Murder" and "Strangler", it's no wonder they were ignored and forgotten, but you'd think somebody would have popped them in as backgrounders somewhere. But no- they're THAT obscure, to the point where even Force of Nature & Psionex get more play.

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 48 / Defenses: 12 (107)

-A big, aggressive brute, Warhead wears a Powersuit that turns him into a powerhouse. In his first appearance, he manages to get himself killed by running out of power while on his team's commandeered spaceship- he dies after refusing to be saved by Nova. He's revived by the advanced technology of the aliens that back their group (the Shadow Consortium), and given more backstory- he'd been arrested by Nova in the past while robbing a bank, but after being released, he murdered a family of four and was executed- the Aakon aliens revived him that time, too, and recruited him to Shatterforce. Angry over being pushed aside by the organization following their failure to apprehend Nova, he attacked an Aakon and was easily blasted aside. Later on, he was beaten one-on-one by Nova, and never seen again.

-Warhead may be a moron, but he's dangerous for a PL 7- having strong armor, good strength, and both an Aura & Blasts.
