-The hilariously-named "Murder" attacked Nova with the rest of Shatterforce, and her "Nerve Rays" were the attack that finally managed to fell the hero. When he recovered while the villains were distracted by their Spincraft being taken over by Nova's civilian friends, she was KO'd by a single Gravimetric Blast. Reduced to a nothing character after that, she hurt Kymaera (Namorita) during a group brawl, but was herself defeated by Darkhawk.

-Strangler got the least focus of his team, simply showing up as a nameless background guy with an "Electro-Shock" touch. He was thrown off the group's flying ship by Nova in his first appearance, and was easily beaten by Nova in the second. As such, he is the worst member of the team by far, sporting simpler armor and being easier to beat.

Ah, finally found The Spirit- I got to her when I statted up Marvel U.K. three years ago. So unmemorable I didn't remember at all, lol. And I guess last time I felt she was worth statting, but didn't this time around! At least I didn't waste time re-doing a statline, then!

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +3 (+10 Armor), Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Sea Urchin is a lawless scavenger.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 52 / Defenses: 9 (135)

-A foe from the early days of The New Warriors, Sea Urchin (nicknamed by the media; he felt it made him sound cheap) was like, a supervillain version of the guys on the low-budget Canadian show Beachcombers- a salvage operator... FOR EVIL! Okay, so he was more or less a pirate that scrounged up undersea things, and he had a pretty impressive operation, containing various ships, minions, and a front so that he could come off as legitimate. When he turned up scavenging Atlantean stuff, Namorita got involved.

-However, exhausted by the chase, Namorita was left vulnerable.. and was SAVAGELY BEATEN, in a scene that still reads as uncomfortable, with the merciless villain smashing her again and again after dehydrating her with his "heat coil" and then nearly stabs her to death, finally "scalping" her by cutting off her ponytail (as Sea Urchin is Native American, he sees this as delicious irony, though quotes that it was brought to his people by whites). However, in that same issue, Namorita wastes no time in getting her revenge- she dons ceremonial Murder Armor and prepares to kill him, overwhelming him when her gear resists the attacks that worked last time. She easily defeats him, cracks open his armor, and... can't bring herself to execute him, instead letting him get brought to prison.

-A couple of years later, this tale is revisited as he's released due to insufficient evidence and "questionable" methods of arrest- he pops up in New Warriors #28 engaging in weapons trafficking this time, and has Cardinal act as a mercenary to cover his escape- he's defeated by the debuting Michiko "Turbo" Musashi and arrested- this was his last appearance in New Warriors. Kurt Busiek used him as a background goon of Attuma's new "Deep Six" in the pages of The Defenders- they got away the first time, but in the second, Doctor Strange (under the influence of magic that made him and the Defenders become "distant from humanity") teleports his armor away, leaving him to drown- Sea Urchin is only rescued at Valkyrie's insistence. So ultimately, a potentially interesting bad guy was more of a one-off, then re-used as filler (he wasn't even in armor in the second NW tale!), and then only Busiek remembered him after that.

-I was thinking PL 9 for Sea Urchin, but ultimately he just ended up being one of those guys who did the old "Beat the hero, then lose the rematch" thing, jobbing out to a PL 9-ish Namorita, having only beaten her the first time due to her vulnerability to great heat and her exhaustion. So he's a PL 8 Battlesuit guy.

Undersea-specific Powersuit Guys are pretty rare - Again, if people actually used this guy more, he could fight Stingray or something.

Complications:
Addiction (Drugs)- Tantrum is addicted to various drugs, which he used as a coping mechanism after the deaths of his parents.
Power Loss/Normal Identity (Drug-Free)- Tantrum's enhanced strength is a result of the various drugs & chemicals in his system- when not using, his stats fall within "normal civilian" levels.

Total: Abilities: 34 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 11 (65)

-Tantrum is a one-shot character who hailed from an early Night Thrasher Limited Series, which was probably a "test run" to see if he could handle a solo book (he passed the test... but probably shouldn't have). He was an innocent boy who sadly turned to drugs after the deaths of his parents- using a variety of drugs & chemicals, he became Tantrum, a thug for hire. Eventually, he discovered that he had a brain tumor which was driving him insane- despondent, he began killing innocents by snapping their necks, which drew Night Thrasher to him. Tantrum actually WANTED to die, fearing living with the disease, and warned that he'd keep killing until someone killed him- Thrash manages to take him out with a shot from his gauntlet. Eventually, his tumor was removed and when he stopped using drugs, his intellect returned.

Enemy (The New Warriors)- Fletcher carries a grudge since the Warriors had his father arrested.
Responsibility (Monster)- Fletcher is always this giant blob-monster, and cannot pass for an ordinary human.

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 136 / Defenses: 7 (175)

-The second Biohazard (the first was a short-lived Deathlok foe) was a kid whose father had been sent to prison by the New Warriors. Snooping around his father's warehouse, he ended up breaking a weapon and covered in ooze- it transformed him into an acidic slime monster. Attacking the Warriors out of the grudge for arresting his dad, the battle drew the attention of Generation X for a crossover story- he was ultimately beaten by Husk. He was brought back for a Thunderbolts one-off by Christos Gage, being sprung from jail by Mr. Hyde, Boomerang, Tiger Shark & Whirlwind, who were fighting Superhuman Registration- he punched Venom across the city, but was blown apart by Penance (Speedball), and captured in tons of little tiny energy-bubbles by Songbird. This was it, aside from a one-off in the "Pleasant Hill" story-arc- he breaks out of prison, but is beaten by one of the monstrous Howling Commandos.

-Pricey, but relatively low-tier, Biohazard contains a lot of "Blob"-type stuff (I statted up fascimiles of that horror monster in the past, but nothing super-definitive- it's a lot of minor effects like Insubantial 1 & Slithering combined together with the expensive combination of Damage & Weaken). He's only PL 8, but relatively difficult to deal with, since he's got a lot of Immunities and hurts to touch.

The Pearl Sect

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE PEARL SECT:
Created By: Evan Skolnick & Patrick Zircher
First Appearance: The New Warriors #61 (July 1995)

-The "Pearl Sect" is a band of former HYDRA agents who went off on their own following the splintering of that organization following the death of Baron Strucker. Their plan: to create global chaos via an economic collapse by pointing a mind control device at Wall Street, thus interjecting themselves into the marketplace. Their hide-out? The Crash Pad of the New Warriors! It was established via a BIG retcon that the Sect had set up shop before the Warriors had arrived, and they didn't want to risk their sweet hiding spot (with easy access to Wall Street), so they operated in secrecy. They were inadvertently discovered by Hindsight, who stumbled upon them and had their origins explained to him. Hindsight escapes their hapless villainy by getting them to argue about the validity of various HYDRA schemes, but they mind-control some arriving Avengers & Turbo into attacking him- he swivels the chair of the mind-controlling agent, who now points his weapon at their leader, Mother of Pearl- the Avengers & Turbo thus make short work of the Sect.

-The guy who wrote the Marvunapp bio found the issue fun, as Mother of Pearl had the classics of cliched villainy, the issue talked smack about various HYDRA plans over the years, and focused on Hindsight- at that point underdeveloped. HOWEVER, there's also an undercurrent of satire at work here, as Evan Skolnick was parodying Ron PERELMAN (Mother of Pearl was initially going to be called "Pearl Man"), who at that point was a venture capitalist buying up various companies and saddling Marvel Comics with boatloads of debt (a process that is shocking still not illegal or regulated, as it's now brought low countless companies, including Toys R Us in the U.S.), as well as the "Heroes Reborn" debacle, which Evan felt was destroying Marvel by offering its hottest properties to the Image guys that'd screwed them over. One of Mother of Pearl's lines was: "We've had to rob and lie too long to be felled by this!"

The Larcenous Three

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE LARCENOUS THREE:
Created By: Erik Larsen & Cory Turnbull
First Appearance: Nova #5 (Sept. 1999)

-Sporting a name like some 1980s rap group, The Larcenous Three were jobbers invented by Erik Larsen (an Image artist at the time who only seemed to rejoin Marvel to work on passion-projects for characters he'd liked, like Nova) for his Nova writing stint. Their literaly only appearance was in a one-off fight in which Vampiro was taken into custody by Nova & Spider-Man after the Three attacked an apartment building (where Nova's parents were living at the time), while the other two escaped. And that was it for them... until randomly appearing in The Initiative, where Vampiro was singled out for engaging in villainous activity still- he was singled out and devoured alive by The Hood in his demonic form. The remaining two were part of the Shadow Initiative that invaded the Negative Zone Prison when it was besieged by natives of that dimension, and survived to tell the tale.

-Apparently their nickname was not a thing in the comics- it's a later invention by a former Marvunapp editor, Madison Carter, who included it as a cutesy reference to their creator, Erik Larsen.

Defenses:

Complications:
Motivation (Killing)- Vampiro enjoys slaughtering people in the manner of a vampire.
Responsibility (Thinks He's A Vampire)- Vampiro looks and acts like a vampire, while not suffering from any perceived weaknesses.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 11 (71)

-Vampiro was the only member of The Larcenous Three with any characterization- a cackling lunatic, he believed himself to be a vampire, and proved skilled enough in a fight to grab Spider-Man in mid-leap and throw him into Firearms's path, then knock Nova's helmet around. However, he was swiftly beaten- Nova knocked some teeth out with a punch, and after his new "reactive costume" set the helmet back into place, he KO'd Vampiro and had him arrested.

-Vampiro's nature was perfect for a one-off appearance in The Initiative- showing up as one of many supervillains railroaded into the Initiative program, he was expected to behave, but went around murdering hookers and drinking their blood. With a new outfit (a mask, pale skin and white hair) he tried to deny the accusations when The Hood brought them forward, then annoyedly confessed, pointing out that as a vampire, "I got needs". The Hood snapped back that they were having this conversation in the noonday sun in NEW MEXICO, and that Vampiro was going to cost them all everything because of his lack of control. Vampiro talked smack and tried to walk away, calling Hood's bluff... at which point the Hood revealed his demonic side, transforming into a massive, multi-story monster that devoured Vampiro alive. Correctly guessing that the others would therefore be brought into line, The Hood stopped. Good, good use of a terrible one-off villain.

-Vampiro is only just barely good enough to be annoying to Spider-Man & Nova, tagging both characters but being unable to beat either.

-A hilariously one-note idiot, Badd Axe actually shares the name with an "Edgelord" villain I created for my "Jabverse" setting, theorizing that it was too stupid NOT to use. Apparently I was right. Badd Axe's only initial appearance involved Nova carrying him into the air and dropping him after a struggle- the villain escaped in the melee with his teammate, Firearms, while Vampiro (who was also being carried) was captured. Later, Badd Axe appeared with The Shadow Initiative, and faced some ex-Initiative people who'd splintered off and reformed The New Warriors- Ultragirl managed to avoid his axe's slash, while Rage later attacked him. He's ultimately shown beaten by Butterball, who takes his axe.

-Badd Axe is so useless he has zero wins or even "Good Showings"- he was noticeably left behind as "useless" by his Initiative bosses, and easily scooped up by the heroes.

-Firearms is so low-rate that his only real appearance in a fight consists of him being tripped and knocked out by Spider-Man. He escaped the fight, however, and didn't even go on to do anything important in The Initiative, unlike the others. He gets PL 6 and likes it.

-Yes, there was apparently ANOTHER Marvel character named Photon before that name got taken by Monica Rambeau. Or Genis. Or that Guardians of the Galaxy character. This Photon was a Maggia agent who used a special gun to murder an inventor (Richard Rider's cousin) for his special device, then killed the man's butler (a witness) even while Spider-Man & Nova were attempting to protect him. This was all meant as a "Whodunnit?", which various suspects given from a list of unmasked fellows. The clues were when Dr. Rider removed all the months of a calendar, which spelled out "JASON DEA--". Though two of the other suspects turned out to be his accomplices.

-The story seems odd for a few reasons- Peter Parker is so concerned over his secret identity that he hesitates when Photon announces his intentions to kill Dr. Rider- he is then KO'd and Rider dies, yet never seems that bothered about it, according to the person who wrote the bio on Photon. And Photon is wearing a "Bio-Suit" that gives him the "Strength of fifteen men", yet is a common thief who randomly sports this wonderful gear? Why doesn't EVERYONE use such things if they're so common!? You'd think Black Widow and other Badass Normals would be chomping at the bit to use this kind of gear! And then, when the heroes pursued him, he DEFEATED THEM, but left them for A.I.M., to whom he planned on selling the device. A.I.M. naturally decided to put the helpless, not-laserproof heroes into a deathtrap, which they of course escaped and subsequently beat the snot out of A.I.M. and Photon. He literally never appeared again, but was once referred to.

THE SOLDIERS OF MISFORTUNE:
Created By: Evan Skolnick & Richard Pace
First Appearance: The New Warriors #54 (Dec. 1994)

-The Soldiers were mentioned briefly when I statted out Cardinal's "Air Force", as Sparrow had been captured and also forced to join this group and her allies Tanager & Oriole killed- they were all slaves of the paramilitary right-wing subversive group "Undertow", who mind-controlled several people to act as superhuman operatives for them in foreign countries. Included in their number was Kymaera (aka Namorita), and we saw most of this unfold from her perspective. She spent several months as their operative "Hard", but was freed by Night Thrasher after the Mad Thinker (who was a sometimes-ally of the New Warriors, finding them to be fascinating youths who tried really hard) investigated the memories of "Cut", who'd been captured and de-programmed. Most of these guys have SPECTACULARLY plain, awful codenames.

-Despite appearing in five issues, and being somewhat important to the Warriors (given that they kidnapped Kymaera and all), they disappear quickly, and we never really learn anything about their boss, Protocol. I mean, the guy is at least ten feet tall, looks like a demon, is completely nude, and his wrists are covered with spikes. And he's a far-right paramilitary group leader?

Roster:
Hard- aka Namorita. Freed by her fellow New Warriors.
Fast- aka Sparrow of Air Force. Her fate is unknown.
Cut- An environmentalist who was kidnapped. Insitutionalized after the battle.
Dry- Could dry people out into dehydrated husks.
Dark- A former physicist.
Light- A former preacher, given eyeblasts.
Right- A former journalist. Possesses an "Embiggening" right hand judging by one pic.
Wrong- Some guy with a gun.
Protocol- Some huge, demonic looking creature who ran "Undertow".
