-Onyxx may be the coolest looking (and coolest-named) of the entire X-Students, which is funny, because he's not only redundant (Rockslide & Bling! have almost the exact same powers, but with MORE VERSATILITY), but a complete backgrounder, prone to "Those Two Guys" appearances with Bling!, Glob Herman or Anole in the back of scenes as recognizable "obvious mutants". He's a big, strong guy who's not that bright, but isn't a jokester like Santo is- his only real characterization came when he fell in love with teammate "Foxx" (actually Mystique) and fought Gambit when Foxx went after the Cajun instead.

-Aaaaaaaaaaand of course being "A Poor Man's Rockslide" on a roster that INCLUDED ROCKSLIDE, the dude pretty much had a target on his head from day-one- it took a bit (he lasted past Decimation/M-Day and The Purifiers story-arcs), but during Necrosha (aka "Blackest Night: Marvel Edition"), he came across a now-evil Wither, who effortlessly one-shotted him to death. He was one of only a couple people who died that arc (along with Diamond Lil), and even NAMOR was left going "well why the F are we mourning these D-League Losers?" Cyclops basically noted that sure; these were bottom-tier nobodies, but EVERY death counts when the Mutant Race is being diminished.

-Onyxx is a PL 7 like Bling!, but WAY under-pointed for how tough he is. He's basically what a Powerhouse/Brick build looks like in it's infant form, being heavy, Class 25 strong, and having some grappling abilities, but also being very, VERY inaccurate (most of the X-Students, you'll notice, have pretty crappily low Attack & Defense Bonuses, but Onyxx is even worse than the usual "upgraded" student).

Complications:
Prejudice (Obvious Mutant)
Relationship (Sister, Tattoo)- Radian is now mourning the death of his sister, killed on a New Warrior mission.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 21 / Defenses: 9 (70)

-Radian's your everyday "Dazzle"-themed guy from the Omega Gang, but can also burn people with his powers. Like his sister, he ended up on the New Warriors squad of De-Powered mutants, but actually got to survive the first few missions. We'll see where this character goes, as he's basically a blank slate right now.

-Nothing fancy, just a pretty well-built guy with few Skills or Advantages, and a Dazzle/Blast Burst Effect. A bit dangerous, but nothing too bad. Surprisingly, he joined The New Warriors after being de-powered (along with his sister Tattoo, who was soon killed), wearing a Suit that allowed him Blast 8, plus Deflect 8.

Involuntary Transformation (Formless, Mobile Puddle)- If Rain Boy's suit is perforated, he will become a formless puddle.
Prejudice (Obvious Mutant)

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 4--2 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 8 (65)

-Rain Boy is a simple little character with no backstory (and a similar status to Flubber- ie. the writers forgot about him apparently), who's either dead or de-powered somewhere. I do like his design & powers, though- there's a surprising amount of Wind Guys out there in comics these days (I used to think there weren't a lot, but I've had to use that power-set like 9 million times), but NOT a lot of "Water Guys".

-Rain Boy's a Containment Suit-type of guy I'm quite sure, but not entirely dependent on it like Dummy (who died without his) was. So instead of making it a Device, I'll go the Wildfire route and make it a Drawback that he needs to suit to have form, but can still move around without it.

-Redneck's another pretty boring guy from the Omega Gang, having a boring power (it's like Pyrokinesis, but WORSE, since it's a touch attack!) and a "generic guy" look to him. He turned into Skybolt and joined the New Warriors after M-Day, but got killed by the "Cape Killers", which is a suitable fate for such a lame guy. Pretty simple. Just a big, rough, tough guy with a powerful damaging attack coming from his hands- enough to be PL 7.5, but still weak defensively. With that, he got a handy version of The Beetle's Armor, which let him Fly & Multiattack Blast things and gave him some durability.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 4--2 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 19 / Defenses: 8 (48)

-Rubbermaid actually got a bit of characterization, falling in love with Jeffrey Garrett, who was then wanted for murder. She did nothing else of note before dying the Busplosion. Rubbermaid's powers are themed around a Mr. Fantastic-like Elasticity form, but at a much lower (and less useful) level. A PL 4.5 defensive build, she's not much, but it at least kinda stands out on her team.

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +2 (+3 Uniform), Fortitude +4, Will +4

Complications:
Guilt (Mutant)- Idie believes that her mutant powers are blasphemous, and considers herself a monster. As such, she freely killed some Hellfire Club goons- if she's going to Hell anyways, why not?

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 37 / Defenses: 13 (90)

-Idie (pronounced "Ih-dyay") was the most "normal" of The Lights (Hope's team of newbie mutants), and had the somewhat-rare ability of Temperature Control- allowing her both "Fire Guy" and "Ice Guy" powers. This could have made her quite forgettable (like everyone on her team who wasn't Hope Summers), but all of a sudden Jason Aaron made her one of the key students in his Wolverine and the X-Men book, where she became the most important student after Quentin Quire. She used to look like an adult woman more than a young teen, but the later artists (Chris Bachalo & others) seem to draw her appropriately 14-ish. She's from Delta State, Nigeria (reminds me of that weird show that used to be on "The Detour" on Teletoon, with all the weirdly-animated noses), and is SUPER-religious, feeling incredibly guilty about her "blasphemous" Mutant Powers. This effectively makes her a new-generation Rahne Sinclair.

-She's also notable for the fact that, despite her appearing in every single issue of Wolverine & The X-Men, all of which I've read, I didn't know what her super-power or codename were until I looked them up. Aaron is good at many things (funny dialogue, pointing out how weird super-worlds are, etc.), but exposition isn't really one of them- she pretty much never fights, and is all about the talking and the plotting. So she's a more well-rounded CHARACTER than most new X-Kids, but her stateline's a little harder to figure out statistically. She's since appeared with the Original X-Men (who are STILL AROUND, bizarrely enough) in their ongoing, but in a VERY minor role (ie. she never says or does anything until the sixth or seventh issue). I'm not as down on modern comics as some (or most, in fact), but they can be REALLY WEIRD for stuff like this.

-Idie has a neat power-set, but really just adds a Heat Blast to "Iceman Lite" at PL 7.5 levels- most of the Lights ended up as PL 8s, but in W&TXM, she's almost never shown fighting- her best showing is probably killing a bunch of Hellfire Club Mooks, which isn't a huge feat. She has potential, but is still WAY too cheap on points for a real active super-hero.

Complications:
Responsibility (Nihilistic Sociopath)- Quentin is basically a hellraiser who rejects all authority. He has repeatedly caused problems just for the sake of humiliating or troubling others.
Responsibility (Ego)- Quentin believes he is the greatest thing going, and actively disrespects others. He once got offended that Utopia was formed, because that was HIS idea first.
Relationship (Sophie Cuckoo)- Quentin loved Sophie, and was basically broken by the revelation that she despised him.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 84 / Defenses: 15 (176)

-Quentine Quire is the leader of the Omega Gang, a "student rebellion" arc in Grant Morrison's X-Men run. Your everday boring-ass "Omega Level Telepath" (seriously, how many of these guys have there been?), he led a small group of students to revolt, wearing costumes inspired by the "Mutant Overlord" drawings anti-mutant bigots had created as a possible nightmare future, though the X-Men beat most of them pretty easily, and the Stepford Cuckoos did some "Kick" (a mutant power-enhancing drug) to increase their Hive-Mind's power to break him. He ended up "evolving" a new mutant power and disappearing thanks to some Xorn-related nonsense, and showed up a couple more times doing weird vague villainous things. He's a threatening character, but kind of prone to Morrison-esque weird stories.

-In recent years, Jason Aaron has taken a liking to him, and kind of portrayed him as a more Enfante Terrible kind of hell-raising youth, and actually succeeds in making him kind of fun to read about. I mean, think of how WRONG this kind of character could turn out- he could have easily come across like a stupid Mary Sue or like those characters that are popular on TV who basically live out the nerdy writers' fantasies of saying and doing whatever they want without ever getting their comeuppance (think Roger from American Dad, possibly my least-favourite TV character in history). He could have basically stolen the spotlight from every single other character and ruined Wolverine and the X-Men. But he's actually a pretty fun character DESPITE basically taking over the book at times (it's equal parts Wolverine, Quire, Kitty & The Hellfire Kids), in that his nihilism is directed at the right targets (Wolverine acting as a Headmaster, villains, or that time he Mind Controlled all the world leaders into humiliating themselves with confessions of their darkest secrets). Plus they're basically sort-of redeeming him, in that he acts like a giant tool, but ALSO tries to save the lives of some people.

-Unfortunately, they kinda bungled it, as post-Aaron he got a run in a REALLY short-lived "Sequel Series" that... just plain didn't need to exist (it lasted a handful of issues until Wolverine died, ending the book- I had a subscription at the local shop and received a few before reading any, and it was too late to cancel it by the time the book ended- maybe one issue was good). It dealt with Quentin being rebellious AGAIN, becoming a member of the new Hellfire Club, and it kind of farted along and got the axe. Quentin hasn't reappeared for some time. And reading online shows that a few fans DID think he was way-overdone in Wolvie & The X-Men, so he's got a bad rep on him.

-This is Quire as a student- he eventually develops Telekinetic powers in some alternate timelines. He's horrifically powerful mentally, with a devastating Mental Blast or Mind Control power-set, but needs a bit more closeness than most Psyker-types. His mind moves at a million thoughts a minute, he's a super-genius with a ton of Skills, and he's really hard to shut down with psionic attacks (Mind Shield plus Will Save plus Nullify Psionics), and in recent years he's gained a few other tricks (like his Psychic Shotgun, working like a teenage boy's ideal version of Psylocke's Psychic Knife). He's pretty easily the highest-level of all the X-Students, even without the power-boosting drug Kick behind him.

Jabroniville wrote:Hah- that's funny. One of the things that was bothering me about RWBY was that the battles were basically never-ending Spinning Calisthenics, with people jumping all over the place at lightning speeds, never "selling" a single hit like it hurt. I compared it to something I've bashed before- those CGI fight scenes did between video game characters (Samus Aran vs. Halo chick, etc.). Turns out there's a reason I found them so similar- it was all animated by the same guy.

But yeah, when it comes to fight scenes... slow stuff down. React like things hurt. Pro wrestling has a term for those kinds of battles- Spotfests. Guys literally just running from one "spot" to the other. The BEST matches of all time? Are ones where the guys act like things HURT. Look at the fights in Justice League Unlimited, where guys actually slow down with each hit, drag themselves up off the ground, and fight with more and more raw aggression (losing accuracy & finesse) as the battles go on. THAT is how a good fight scene is done. Animated Spotfests just don't appeal to me.
It feels to me like this problem has lessened a bit, despite being explained away with an in-character reason - elite humans in the setting are protected by their Aura, or innate soul-magic, and aren't in real danger until that is depleted. That said, I wasn't a big fan of the battle scenes for a long time, for the same reason. What's always kept me coming back is the writing. The humor is fun, the story is sharp, and the characters are great - even characters I didn't care for at all in the beginning, like Jaune the Buttmonkey. Everyone is experiencing real character growth, and not in the typical action anime "I've gotten STRONGER!" sort of way.

-Shark-Girl is a little-seen character from Aaron's run, seemingly just a name and a concept set up and that's it. She's a Brazilian surfer girl with a Shark Form. The most she's done in the comics have involved Biting, but I just wanted to throw all that other Shark-y stuff from my Animal Builds onto her, same as Tantra got for Elephants.

-Another nobody X-Student- Silicon's one of those one-shot X-Treme X-Men troublemakers, whose power is the ability to slip out of bonds and fly thanks to a body made of silicon. No mention's ever been made of him post-M-Day, so he's probably dead on the bus. Just the standard Template, plus an odd combo of Flight & Immunity- I don't think he ever went fully-Insubstantial- he just flips out of any bonds or grappling.

-Jia is pretty generic, and forgettable enough that I didn't even remember she was on the team in a book of which I OWN EVERY ISSUE. Alas, there's just too many fairies & sprites running around the X-books these days. Though I like that she's Chinese- it honestly makes zero sense to me why there's so few Chinese super-people- you'd think a nation with THAT many people and THAT many industrial accidents & disasters would have superhumans flying out of its butt-crack- hell, there's like one giant Silver Age Origin Story in waiting!

-Jia is a Flier but also pretty strong- she can "Scale Up" her arms enough that she can punch out a Deinonychus in one shot, or carry a full-grown human while flying!

Does the show only exist in five-minute clips? Or are there longer episodes?

Edit: Oh, checking YouTube, I see them at variable length. No commercial breaks = freedom, I guess.

DC SuperHero Girls Movie #2

Post by Jabroniville »

DC SUPERHERO GIRLS- HERO OF THE YEAR:
* Okay, one minute in to this doll-selling movie, and we have Harley wearing pajamas that are just like her Animated Series costume, Supergirl saying "Supergirl is up! Up, and away!" and Wonder Woman changing clothes by spinning. This gets a passing grade immediately.

* Big Barda is the new student at SuperHero High, but any mistrust sent her way (over the attempted takeover of the school by the Female Furies last movie) is glossed over quickly except for a suspicious Shiva. It's dealt with easily by the end, too.

* The villain Dark Opal (no idea who that is) teleports out of the Amethyst (hey now!) crystal atop SuperHero High, and he whups Hawkgirl (she disarms his sword easily, so he just blasts her) and takes her Nth Metal belt.

* Meanwhile, we meet both Wonder Woman's AND (via flashback/memory) Supergirl's moms, and sure enough... MILFs. Elegant, elongated faces (the girl characters use big, round faces with eyes to match- the moms have longer faces and eyes), with wrinkles under the eyes and around the mouth for maturity. DROOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL...

* Multiple objects are stolen- the Sapphire Ring of Zamaron, a ruby from Wonder Woman's "victory crown", Katana's shuriken, Barda's Mega-Rod, etc.

* Professor Crazy Quilt is depicted as WAY over-the-top flamboyant here- like, there is absolutely no question as to this man's sexuality. That is a BIZARRE turn for a "Kids' Show" to undertake- usually they just pretend that's not a thing, or make it ultra-subtle- this is "transparent closet" territory here (for example: he talks EXACTLY like Shore Leave from The Venture Brothers). On a level that could cheese off BOTH sides on that debate as to whether or not to put that in front of kids, because he's so stereotypical. He is, of course, the funniest character immediately, because he's such a catty bitch.

* So Supergirl is angsting, thinking that her parents might come back. WW is bothered by her mom over-celebrating WW's achievements and embarassing her with endless trophies and assumptions of future victories. Bumblebee's suit is damaged, and is draining so that she's trapped in tiny form. Meanwhile, Dark Opal is revealed to be the minion of a female, high-cheekboned ECLIPSO, who is gathering stuff to create a super-powerful weapon.

* Eclipso finally grabs Supergirl's Macguffin Crystal to form the weapon, and takes on the entire student body at SuperHero High, along with an army of Shadow Creatures (which have now gone from Insubstantial/Regenerating things to one-shot-is-death Mooks). The students take charge by using light against the shadows, while Wonder Woman & Supergirl confront Eclipso in her home base, defeating her through teamwork (an injured Supergirl uses her senses to spot the invisible villain).

So I made a couple of additions to the DCSHG characters after watching this (I have the feeling that I'll be doing that a lot any time I see one of these- the characters are such blank slates otherwise)- Hawkgirl now has a Mace which I'd never seen before, WW & Supergirl have "Quick Change", Shiva has throwing Kunai, and Bumblebee is a genius inventor of sorts, getting upgraded a bit over the "INT 4, Skill +8" character I had her at earlier.

The tone of the show shifts abruptly at one point, as part of one of the more epic story arcs I've ever experienced. It's significantly darker now. I won't be more specific than that, because spoilers.

Oh, one point I forgot to mention: the soundtrack. They do some really amazing things with the music.

Hawkgirl shows off her Mace of Justice™ in the "Weaponomics" short. The one where Cheetah sabotages Wondy's weapon demonstration and she accidentally uses the Lasso of Truth on Lucius Fox.

Complications:
Power Loss (Over-Use of Powers)- Specter will grow badly fatigued if he takes Shadow Form for too long. It also might turn him evil.
Relationship (Grandfather)- Dallas gave his grandpa a heart attack when his powers first manifested, but they are still apparently close.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 4--2 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 47 / Defenses: 9 (69)

-Specter (whose name is so close to the DC character's that he was nearly doomed from the get-go) actually got to SURVIVE the Stryker Bus Massacre and live on, but he's still depowered. All that's known about him is that he's living with his grandfather (one of the few orphans with real family), and had a Shadow Form that involved merging with his own shadow.

-Just a standard cheap Alternate Form power- apparently he CAN go Insubstantial, though none of the bio-sites list that as a power of his (stupid Wiki-fuelling...), so he's one of those rare guys who can go Insubstantial AND use Super-Strength. Though really, the first bit makes him kind of redundant with Trance (the OTHER Alternate Form Intangible Mutant) around. As it stands, he does as much melee damage as Spider-Man, but is only PL 6 on offense & defense, making him still a weak joke compared to any real super-competition.

Defenses:

Complications:
Secret (Ugly)- Slick is only attractive as an Illusion.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 50 / Defenses: 7 (74)

-Slick really had only one purpose in the X-Books: to be a sad little story. He was a mutated dwarf whose powers constructed a kind of "fake persona", a charismatic, handsome young man that everyone around him liked. Quentin "Kid Omega" Quire uncovered his mistruths and exposed him in front of the entire student body, outcasting him. He was pretty much never seen again, but was confirmed as de-powered.

-An interesting little build, in that he's got Emotion Control (that's constantly active, but lower-level) & Illusion at basically-constant levels, and some Enhanced Presence of all things. They're highly ranked because only people who knew for a fact what his powers were could see through them, but he tended to drop them upon their discovery. Not really a fighty character, just something that's unique to stat up.

-Tantra pretty much DEFINES "Background Character". He showed up in only one appearance, harassing Bishop & Sage with some other X-Students, at Emma Frost's behest. He forced Bishop to kiss a tree before his shenanigans were caught, and he got put in his place. He's so minor that nobody ever really checked to see if he was dead- but he probably is. Humorously, he was also an ELEPHANT BOY, apparently having the worst luck in mutant history or something.

-Tantra's pretty cheap, since he only made a single appearance. He can force people to make out with each other (and other objects, if necessary), but apparently has to fire them out in little Energy Blasts, so it's a Ranged Attack he needs to make rather than the more effective Perception effect Emotion Control normally is. I threw in some of the powers from my Elephant build for the heck of it, just to flesh him out a bit more. Yes, Elephants have Tremorsense.

-Tattoo (one of MANY Marvel characters named that, oddly) is an Omega Gang member with a pretty standard "Phasing" power-set, alongside a weird side-thing that lets her write things on her own body mentally. Some writer actually went to the trouble of having her specifically de-powered during M-Day, then joining that crappy New Warriors team of other de-powered mutants with a Stilt-Man like outfit, where she died really quickly. Crappy death for a crappy character.

-Tattoo is sorta like Kitty Pryde/Vision, except she's more based around the Stun/Damage abilities than they are, and doesn't have the skill to possess any good Advantages for her Phasing. The "Tattoos that move" on her skin, I just used Visual Communication, which oddly fits. Kind of expensive and you COULD be justified in just making it a Feature or a Limited Morph, but what the hey.

-Trance is one I'd never heard of, but surprisingly she's stuck around all this time- just not on a major X-team. A girl with a little less characterization than the others (she's 'culturally sophisticated'), she has a very complex grab-bag of powers that make her kinda hard to write for, I'd imagine, so she's kind of a back-up character to the Young X-Men, but has joined the "unseen characters" of the Jean Grey School For Higher Learning.

-Trance has the fairly unique Alternate Form set-up that would've had the Projection Flaw in 2e, meaning she goes into a trance while her other Form going flying around, doing stuff. Alas, Alternate Form isn't really a separate Power anymore, so there's two options: jury-rig an Alternate Form "Projection" Flaws like the -1 Flaw that Removable Devices have, or use a Flawed Summon. Unlike many Astral Form thingies, she can interact with the physical world. She can go Insubstantial, read emotions, detect energy, can't be Teleported against her will, Blast stuff, fly, and go incorporeal, which is a pretty big power-set for such a young non-combatant. Despite that, she's still a PL 6.5, so she's not leading any fights for the time being.

-Ultimately, I'm going with Trance as a Summon Ghost Form Character. Oddly, despite the power being the fairly-expensive Summon set-up, she's cheaper this way. In this sense, her "Minion" is really just herself with all the same stats, plus Ghost Powers, making it a more-expensive Heroic Controlled Minion.
