-Given a very lithe, speedy, streamlined appearance, the Sea Whip is a very cool variant of an Orca, with similar coloring, but a naturally quadrupedal form. The book makes a big deal out of how inventive an idea Sea Whips are, and how incredibly fast they are... but its stats along those lines are barely more impressive than any other animal's.

-Sea Whips have very solid M.D.C.- from 140-240, averaging out to 190-ish. Oddly, though, his tail appears to have TWICE that amount, which doesn't make any sense and is probably a typo. 4D6x10+350 is either a big misprint, or they switched the body and tail's durability and this this is far and away the toughest of the War Steeds... but that in itself seems unlikely, as it's not the biggest, and the bio mentions nothing about it being super-durable. In any case, the crazy-ass Sea Whip is *PL 13* on offense, owing to incredibly-powerful bites and tail attacks.

-The Seal Serpent is odd to me, because it looks like the most "natural" of these critters. The only odd thing is, its furry coat, longer skull, elongated frame and prominent claws make it look like a colossal OTTER, not a "Seal", much less a "Seal Serpent". They are said to fight like Stegosaurs, using clubbed tails as weapons, but are ungainly and slow on land compared to other War Steeds. Despite this, and somewhat low physical stats, they are increasingly becoming the "favorite War Steed" of Lemurians, and also take well to humanoids and other sea creatures, given their gregarious personalities and playful nature.

-The toughness of a Seal Serpent varies quite a bit, with 4D6x10 +Physical Endurance covering 40+ to 240+, but 155 M.D.C. or so is pretty normal. Peculiarly, they're the only War Steed with no Parry bonus, instead packing a bit of accuracy and +4 to dodge.

That Chuck Walton artwork is fantastic! His illustrations make creatures who by all rights should like ridiculous and awkward and instead renders them as natural-looking, ferocious beasts.

Really impressive!

It's as good a "buy it for the art" RPG book as I've ever seen. I mean, it was the first new Rifts book I'd ever bought! All the rest were from the "classic" era.

-My favorite of the War Steeds is probably the most "out there" of their designs- the gigantic SERPENT SEAHORSE. It's like someone challenged Chuck Walton that "too bad you couldn't make a SEAHORSE look like a monstrous bad-ass..." and he was like "HOLD MY BEER!". Nothing says "crazy" like a quadrupedal, armored-up seahorse with guns on its shoulders. It's said to be the newest creation of the Master Biomancers, and is said to be aloof and unfriendly compared to the more exciteable other War Steeds- probably because it was given such an "alien", featureless head.

-Naturally, the designers made the Serpent Seahorse one of the toughest things in the book- it's by far the most durable War Steed- the thing has an astonishing 340-640 span for its M.D.C., averaging to 490-ish. It also is the only War Steed to have ranged weapons attached to it- a pair of gigantic Stonecaster Cannons (a frequent weapon seen in the book) that fire off three different payloads, including a PL 10 Area Attack, a PL 9.5 Secondary Effect Blast, and a PL 10.5 Penetrating Blast. I threw on "Multiattack" because the book indicates you do DOUBLE DAMAGE if both cannons are pointed at the same target (something that Rifts is in no way complex enough mechanically to prevent you from doing), meaning the Metamorphic Stone blast does 12D6 M.D. per hit, which is insane. And of course it's the P.C. who fires the Cannons, though the creature may opt to itself- this probably ups the accuracy a bit. So this is the heavy-duty Steed that doubles as a weapons platform, costing you only "character" bits like a more personable mount.

-Given the most "normal" appearance of the War Steeds (in that it looks like two animals connected together with slight fins on the tiger-half, rather than a gene-spliced monstrosity), the Tiger Serpent is among the most devastating, and looks really cool- a Mer-Tiger of sorts. Their appearance, and the fact that the book suggests that Indian & Chinese myths suggested they may have always been on Earth, implies to me they might not have been added to the list of Steeds until later. They're physically larger than most of the Steeds, being 40-60 feet long, but that's mostly tail, as their weight's about the same- 3-6 tons. Despite this, they are stealthy hunters, preferring to hunt like crocodiles- lying in wait under the water while their prey comes near.

-Tiger Serpents have an incredible M.D.C. amount, varying from 250-400, averaging to about 325. That makes them MUCH more durable than most of their fellows.

-Okay, so like the Tiger Serpent, I'm EXTREMELY suspicious that this thing was not supposed to be here. Rifts Lemuria features 5 different kinds of dragon, most LOOKING draconic, except this one sits with the War Steeds, and the others are all super-intelligent, Palladium-style Dragons. Like, why is this one arbitrarily a War Steed and the others are actual Dragons? They're said to have mysterious origins- possibly evolving in the dark abyssal regions of Earth, or from the same dimension as the Shadow Beasts. Sharks, whales, humans, and D-Bees are their favorite prey, and have human-like intelligence. Many are evil and grow up as such (a "story idea" mentions that a band of pirates raises them as evil mounts), but the Lemurians have taken special care with hatchlings to make them into genuinely good mounts and allies. Maybe one of the designers just figured one of the serpents should look like... I dunno, a SERPENT?

-The Shadow Serpent's M.D.C. is very respectable, going from 140-340, with a 120 M.D.C. boost at night. This makes them among the most durable of the War Steeds overall in these circumstances. It's also by far the best fighter, sporting +6 to hit, +4 to parry, and +5 to dodge, making it PL 12 to defense- extremely rare for a War Steed. They drop 2 points in most stats when outside of the darkness, however- powerful enough light spells (it's said "Globe of Daylight" cast thrice will do it) or being out in the daylight will nuke this, rendering them closer to PL 10 most of the ways.

-The Moai are... well, they're the famous statues of Easter Island, which, in proud Rifts fashion, are actually gigantic mobile golems that can rise up, revealing undersized bodies, and go out to KICK ASS against supernatural evil, which they are exceptionally good at sensing. There's also a lot about how Sea Sentinels and those with Stone Magic can ride them, actually speaking a magic word to go inside their bodies and fight through them. The small ones are most common, and the giants are extremely rare, being only 22 in number.

-Moai are INCREDIBLY tough, packing PL 11-12 unarmed and Blasting powers (like is usual in Rifts, even the highest-PL creatures rarely upgrade in damage that much as they get bigger), but go from PL 11.5 to PL 14 defensively, owing to four attacks, +4 to parry, and Toughness going from 17-18.

Actually, the Easter Island statues do have bodies. Full sized ones. It's just that the most famous of them are on the slope of a volcano, and erosion as buried them neck deep, so people assume that they are just head statues.

Did not know that! Thank you.

Oh, and those are some of the best dragons and chimerae I've seen in rpg books. Do you know if the artist is still active in the genre, Jab?

All my best!

They also all face a specific direction except for 7 of them that are in a line and face the Marquesas Islands. Legends have it that 7 princes from the Marquesas were sent to Easter Island and told not to return until they had made peace with each other. Modern historians say there has never been a link between Easter Island and the Marquesas.
