Re: Jab’s Builds! (Yoda! Ezra! Hera! Sabine! Zeb! Inquisitors!)

Post by Jabroniville »

haha, I do so love how my plans for stuff on my thread spirals out of control in the planning phase...

So when Star Wars is done around the end of the month, I was planning on a short set of Fighting Game builds, then re-posting a couple of old things, then another pair Fighting Games. And THEN... a Hank Pym set!

So it was gonna be "Hank Pym's Friends & Foes", statting the variations of Hank, The Wasp, all three Ant-Men, the new Wasp, and Hank's villains- Scarlet Beetle, El Toro... idiots like that.

But then statting HANK begs to stat ULTRON. Which of course means I should re-post The Vision, I suppose. And I wanted to re-post Quicksilver & The Scarlet Witch anyhow, so that right there helps- I can get all of them at once! Vision of course now has a daughter from his solo book, and she's a recurring hero, too.

OH BUT WAIT!! The Vision & Scarlet Witch had children, who were reincarnated as two members of the Young Avengers, Speed & Wiccan. And you can't post Wiccan without posting his other half, Hulkling. So might as well re-post all the Young Avengers instead of just half of them... ESPECIALLY since one of them is a successor to The Vision. But then there's the YOUNG MASTERS- they were one-off threats, but still related to that book, and have kinda oddly stuck around.

Oh, and since Agatha Harkness is so tied to Wanda's backstory, I posted her... and then remembered that Salem's Seven were major threats of hers.

So this simple "one-week set" has now turned into like a 2-3 week frenzy of posts, lol. GODDAMN MARVEL AND ITS INCESTUOUS SUPERHERO UNIVERSE!!!

There was a writer trying to give the Chiss a push similar to what Mandalorians got a few years ago. A whole race of hyper-competent military types.

Rogue One

Post by Jabroniville »

ROGUE ONE:
-This 2016 film is probably the most universally-beloved of all the post-1980s Star Wars movies, featuring a great plot, interesting character designs, and a simple story-arc that's a "one & done". It's a prequel to the Original Trilogy, taking place just before it starts; the capturing of the Death Star schematics that result in Princess Leia being captured by Darth Vader and the Empire. It also retcons in that the famous weakness of the Death Star, the open exhaust port, was deliberately added by the inventor/designer Galen Erso, who'd been press-ganged into service to the Empire after they killed his wife.

In this tale, the daughter of a Rebel scientist named Jyn Erso is our main character, and she teams up with another "Ragtag Band of Misfits" so typical to the franchise on their mission to capture the plans from an Imperial base, then give them to the other Rebels. We're introduced to this classic bunch of guys, all of whom look like they were taken from the roster of your typical Star Wars RPG- a heavy-duty Droid used for melee combat, a hotshot pilot, a Skillmonkey Spy Captain, a Heavy Weapons Guy, and a quasi-mystical Force Monk using weird variations of Force Abilities to do the impossible, while also not being saddled with all the Jedi stuff. And then they are slowly killed, one by one, as the movie comes to a conclusion with the most badass showcasing of Darth Vader in history (a terrifying sequence that features him slowly breathing in a black hallway... then lights it up with his red lightsaber and starts mowing down Heroic Mooks like crazy, slamming a guy into the CEILING, then piercing a dude with the saber as the door slides open in front of him. It's crazy and pretty much everyone loved it.

The movie also kind of stands in opposition to the "Fans only hate the Sequel Trilogy cuz they're SEXIST!" idea, since the movie's main character is a female, just like in the other new movies, and nobody complains about Jyn Erso.

Rogue One also stands in opposition of fans disliking the new movies because of racism, given over half the team was not white.

Jyn Erso

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +8

Complications:
Enemy (The Empire)- The Empire killed Jyn's mother and forced her father to build weapons for them. Jyn has hated them ever since.
Relationship (Saw Gerrera)- Saw rescued a young Jyn and raised her thereafter. He himself is a rebel extremist- one who's gone too far for Jyn to follow. Their relationship remains strained.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 13 (93)

-Jyn Erso is the main character of Rogue One, and takes the role of a Bogart-esque cynic, pressed into the fight against the Empire after they kidnapped her father and forced him to work for them. She therefore hates the Empire, but also dislikes the political maneuvering and bureaucracy of the Rebellion, preferring to act on her own. She has issues with her adoptive father, Saw Gerrera, a rebel extremist (with obvious similarities to real-world terrorists that were probably no mistake; Al Quaeda operatives are quoted as telling American interrogators that they see themselves as "Luke and Han"). Ultimately, she is reunited with her father just before he is killed, inspires the dispassionate, defeated Rebels, and runs off against orders at the Rebel base in order to take their mission (callsign Rogue One) to the Empire- they successfully steal the plans to the Death Star, but only barely before the complex is destroyed- Jyn & Cassian Andor are killed in the final moments of the story.

-Her visual similarities to Daisy Ridley are prominent enough that Felicity Jones, who plays her, made a parody video explaining that she's NOT Rey from the new ones, but really, it's more about Hollywood often hiring similar-looking actors in big swaths as soon as one of them hits it big (Bradley Cooper & Ryan Gosling look almost identical facially, for example; Pamela Anderson resulted in a huge swath of bottle-blondes with augmented chests; Natalie Portman & Kiera Knightley became pushed around the same time)- the two are short, thin brunettes with similar eyes and jawlines, because casting directors tend to all copy each other and pick certain "looks".

-Jyn isn't really as specifically talented as the others in her group are- her main thing is passion and willingness to go against orders and do her own thing. Something others can be naturally drawn to. So it's a lot of courage and willpower, plus survivability. I also made her a slightly better shot than Cassian Andor, and not as much the "people person" that the espionage specialist is.

Jyn was a good "all around soldier" type, one who didn't really have a specialization but could support the specialists or fill gaps if one wasn't there. She was a good shot, she was a solid hand-to-hand fighter (she beats up the Rebels that come to free her and uses a collapsible baton to take out several Stormtroopers), and she was generally brave in the face of danger. She was also really athletic, good at surviving on her own and overall a very competent soldier.

My one gripe with Rogue One was that, while a great story, it was an example of Star Wars memes actually infecting the franchise. People complained about the Death Star having this massive weakness . . . that only Luke Skywalker could exploit. The whole point of the multiple runs was to show that, even if you used starfighters, the Death Stars defenses will take out the majority of the attackers, and the attackers cannot actually land the fatal blow without the Force to augment their aim. Some other reviewer made the comment that it'd be like saying cars have a glaring weakness because if you shove a lit rag into the gas tank the whole thing will blow up. The whole point of technical readouts is that they can supply you with vulnerabilities to exploit. In this case, the flaw is so small that you need an unnaturally strong Force sensitive to pull it off.

So the idea of the flaw being an intentional weakness designed by Jyn's father was unnecessary, and it makes you wonder how he thought the Rebels would be able to exploit such a weakness, but the rest of the movie is so good I can overlook that issue in general. I'd have rather it be that her father just helped her get the plans and pointed out a flaw in the system, rather than it was some intentional bit of sabotage.

From what I heard around, Rogue One underwent through some major changes and re-shooting during the final months of production, including some pretty big reworks of Jyn and Galen's roles. I wouldn't be surprised if the original version of the story was something along the lines of Galen Erso discovering an actual flaw in the Death Star design and purportedly removing some security features to make it exploitable.
Also -- and this is fridge logic talking -- I would imagine that, given the size and position of the exhaust port, it would have been a much easier target for an infantry assault team with demolition charges. It would have been a suicide mission, for sure, but it would have been much easier.

so it is Saw Gerrera

I thought it was Sol Guerrera since they like to throw out the whole Dutch Dark Father for Darth Vader.

Sol (sun/star) Guerrera (Warrior, though the feminine tense there)

-Cassian Andor is instrumental in Rogue One as the overall commander of their mission. He's a bit of a kind-hearted, flirty, regular guy, as opposed to the sticks in the mud these types of characters typically are, and it works overall to contrast Jyn Erso, though I barely remember his character 3-4 years later. He is beaten by Krennic and his Stormtroopers, but saved by Jyn, and the two are ultimately killed after capturing and sending away the plans to the Death Star, thus ensuring the survival of the Rebellion. The character is supposed to reappear for an Espionage-themed Star Wars series on Disney+.

-Andor is a tolerable fighter and well-learned Rebel Leader, but is a far cry from the established characters of the Movie Trilogies in terms of combat. His primary focus is in his skillset.

Also, he's the first Rebel we have ever see shooting someone in cold blood. He literally shot the guy who told him in the back, on screen, just to make sure the Stormtroopers won't get him.

Enemy (The Empire)- For unknown reasons, Bodhi has turned against the Empire, and is now a Rebel agent.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 5 (42)

-Bodhi Rook (played by an actor of Pakistani descent) is the Team Pilot of the movie, and the only Empire Turncoat on the squad- it was he who got Galen Erso's message to Jyn and the others, at great risk to his own life. He came off as a worry-wart and almost the team's "Butt-Monkey"- it's said that he failed the Piloting Academy tests and had to settle for moving cargo around, and when he gave the information to Rebel Extremist Saw Gerrera, he was tortured to prove his loyalty, and temporarily lost his mind as a result.

-Rook is not shown fighting in the movie, but instead focuses on piloting their ships around. His knowledge of Imperial protocol is thus important, and he's a good enough pilot to land during a storm, but doesn't get involved in the dogfights most other major characters do. He also redirected Empire troops around their base by relaying false information on Rebel troop movements. Finally, Bodhi sends an alert to the Rebel fleet to destroy the Shield Gate over the planet so that they could send out the Death Star plans- this alerts the Empire to his complicity, and a Shoretrooper throws a C-25 fragmentation grenade into the shuttle- Bodhi is killed instantly.

Defenses:

Complications:
Enemy (The Empire)- Malbus fights against the Empire after they occupied his homeworld.
Relationship (Chirrut Îmwe)- Chirrut and Baze are old friends and colleagues, though opposite in personality and spirituality.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 10 (94)

-Baze Malbus & Chirrut Îmwe were a "Those Two Guys" set of characters in Rogue One, the boisterous, cynical bruiser Malbus contrasting his stoic, "Zen Master" partner quite well. Baze is also one of the classic cliched characters in "Star Wars RPGS"- a Heavy Weapons Operator. As most Star Wars characters typically operate tiny little hand-pistols that fire single shots with precision, but the greater setting has all kinds of gear available, it's a natural for a guy to want to play someone with more kick-ass weaponry. Baze of course has the ultimate- a massive Repeater Cannon.

-Baze is said to be a freelance assassin, formerly a religious soldier and defender of Jedha City, but became a die-hard cynic following the Imperial occupation of the city. He & Îmwe help out Jyn Erso and her friends, and become the "Strike Force" portion of the team- Jyn & Cassian are leaders, while these two provide heavy support. Their mission on Scarif, the Imperial HQ where the Death Star plans reside, is to provide a distraction to divert attention away from the information archives. There, Baze engages in wholesale destruction in one of the movie's cooler action sequences, while Îmwe does his zen thing and avoids all the fire- ultimately, Îmwe is killed by the Stormtroopers, and an enraged Malbus charges them, chanting Chirrut's old mantra "I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me"- he is blown up by a grenade, dying with his friend.

-Malbus is unlike most Star Wars characters, who use weaker, one-shot laser pistols- he lays waste to armies of Mooks with a Repeater Cannon that does +7 Multiattack damage, with good Improved Critical and more. He's also very tough and slow compared to the more lithe, spritely guys you usually see in these movies.

Cassian was a nice way to show that, even though the Rebels are the heroes, that doesn't mean they don't have to occasionally pull morally questionable acts. When you're THAT out-gunned, often times you'll need to fight dirty. And while fighting evil is no excuse for being as evil as the other side, sometimes it does mean occasionally dipping into a grey area. What separates a hero from a villain is that while a hero acknowledges the necessity, they do so with reluctance and the realization that doing it costs a little piece of your soul.

I also like Cassian and Jyn's interaction, and the fact that while you COULD read some romantic attraction between them, it was also possible to look at it as just a purely platonic friendship, which I prefer. We never even see them kiss during the film, they only hug each other at the end when the world burns around them. The debate on the ship between the two was interesting. Jyn was right about being lied to regarding the mission to "rescue" her father. At the same time, Cassian rightfully points out that he didn't kill her father despite having the chance, and that his death was an accident due to the Rebel bombing, something he had no control over. He also points out how she has little right to judge him, given she's stuck her head in the sand for several years while he's been fighting this war since he was a child. She states point blank that the he can't talk his way around the fact that her father is dead, but Cassian shoots back that he doesn't have to. And ultimately, I have to side with Cassian here. I understand Jyn just lost her father, but to me she feels more guilty that she didn't do more to be proactive in finding and rescuing her father. She could have potentially been a Rebel all this time, but she chose to run from it and become jaded.

In the end, Jyn's father and her bonding with the other members of Rogue One help break Jyn out of her callous shell and care again, while Jyn makes Cassian want to be a hero and not just a spy. He feels guilty about a lot of the things he's had to do, and the idea of doing something purely good is a cause worth dying for.

Bodhi is a nice example of someone who has almost no combat skills, but is vital to the success of the film thanks to his piloting skills, knowledge of Imperial protocol, his technical skills and the sheer balls to run out into a combat zone while unarmed and carrying a huge target on his back. You can tell the poor guy felt awful about what he'd done while an Imperial and just wanted to make things right. Also a nice show that not all Imperials were white guys.
