I would honestly love to see a series about the pre-Rogue One days of Chirrut and Baze. They're a perfect odd couple type to go on adventurers together, their banter is funny, they kick all kinds of ass, and their devotion to each other is endearing. I'd much rather a show about these two than about Cassian, something shot Mandalorian style but with a focus on martial arts tropes as much as western ones.

And yeah, Baze is a nice contrast to the usual heroes of Star Wars, going around in ACTUAL ARMOR with a heavy blaster weapon as opposed to the 'light armor, pistol' load out of most heroes in the setting. That gun is AMAZING too, able to switch between a rapid fire spray setting and a more focused, armor piercing 'shotgun' blast that he uses on the Death Troopers at the end. As a result, he's more slow moving artillery as opposed to the "lightning bruisers" most heroes are, but he makes a damn fine mook sweeper and overall weapon specialist. He even gets to use a rocket launcher on an AT-AT . . . which does no good, but it's still awesome.

But yeah, Rogue One also feels like someone's Star Wars RPG, but where the GM made it clear at character creation, "No Jedi. Low-level Force Users are okay, but no Jedi." The result is a group that feels more like a Rebel squad, with diverse skill focuses and different weapons loadouts.
"My heart is as light as a child's, a feeling I'd nearly forgotten. And by helping those in need, I will be able to keep that feeling alive."

That was literally my first GM caveat when playing Star Wars: "No Jedo and no Sith and this table. Every other Force-user is fair game."

-Another classic "Fan Take" on a Star Wars character is the "Force Adept" type- someone who isn't a Jedi, yet uses the Force in some unique ways. This makes them outside the typical canon and interesting, yet not quite story-breaking or overpowering. In short, it's FanFic that DOESN'T suck. In this case, Chirrut Îmwe is a spiritual character straight out of a Wire-Fu Hong Kong action flick, transplanted into the Star Wars universe (which was always very "open" to cross-genre lines). Blinded years ago, he is a deep believer in the Force, and believes it will keepp him safe.

-He's a bit droll as well, reacting with disgust when Saw Gerrera's forces bother to BLINDFOLD him when they interrogate him at their base ("Are you kidding? I'm blind!"). His understanding of people, and possibly access to the Force, grants him a lot of perceptive traits, like recognize that Cassian Andor is about to kill Galen Erso ("The force glows darkly around one who is about to kill"). And ultimately he makes a brave sacrifice- when it turns out that an obligatory master switch must be flipped to deactivate the Field around the planet of Scarif and allow the Death Star plans to go through to the Rebel Fleet, Îmwe power-walks through the battlefield, repeating the mantra "I am one with the Force; The Force is with me", avoiding every shot that comes his way, ultimately accomplishing his task before laser fire creates an explosion that blows him back. He dies in Baze's arms, telling him that he can merely look to the Force and find him.

-Chirrut Îmwe is an interesting look at a typical Donnie Yen type of character- a kung fu warrior- in a world devoted to Telekinetic Magi-Knights with Laser Swords and Swashbuckling Laser Guys. It's oddly fitting, yet different, and he effectively makes a more well-balanced guy than many of the others, hitting PL 7 with Dodge (common in the Trilogies) and PL 8 in Melee (rare except for Jedi) and Parry (only Jedis with Lightsabers).

I loved Rogue One. It was a WWII story set to Star Wars and was perfect for it.
My only question about the whole thing was what ever happened to the "many Bothan" spies that died getting the plans to the Princess?

Side note: Chirrut Imwe is more of the Quixiotic Jedi type than a Force Adept. It's from the d6 Mayfair Star Wars game. Basically it's someone who for some reason (usually delusional) believes they are in tune with the force and therefore a jedi. They may or may not have found a lightsaber and learned some ways to use it without killing themselves.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, I LOVE Chirrut Imwe. The Expanded Universe material had long had martial arts styles that could make someone lethal to the point of not needing blasters, with some styles like Teras Kasi potentially making one a match for a Jedi. So seeing someone kung fu fight a squad of Stormtroopers into submission was a truly fun moment. The fact that he's so good at dodging that he can make Stormtroopers hit each other precisely (he gets one Trooper to blast the guy guarding Jyn and Cassian, the bolt firing BETWEEN them to hit the guy behind them) and can knock guys in full armor out with kicks says something about his skill.

I recall some members of the movie production claiming Chirrut wasn't actually Force Sensitive, which seemed weird to me. He clearly had some abilities with the Force, so perhaps they meant that he wasn't born Force Sensitive but developed Force abilities with training? He does clearly impossible things, such as being able to detect that Jyn is wearing a kyber crystal pendant, snipe a TIE Fighter out of the air, be aware of things like Cassian's desire to kill, and of course his leap of faith at the end.

The expanded material also went into that nifty bo-staff-blaster thing he uses to snipe down the TIE Fighter. Apparently it's a human version of a Bowcaster, having hitting power comparable to Chewbacca's weapon, but in order to compensate for the recoil of such a blast they had to make the weapon much longer and fire single shots. The result is that Chirrut is both a close combat specialist and a high powered single shot sniper.

I also love the banter Chirrut has, especially between him and Baze.

* * *

*Chirrut and Baze are awesome, resulting in something around 20 dead or unconscious Stormtroopers*

Chirrut: "You almost SHOT me!"

Baze: *deadpan* "You're welcome." *shoots last Stormtrooper*

* * *

Cassian: "Is he a Jedi?"

Baze: "There are no more Jedi here. Only dreamers, like this fool."

Chirrut: "The Force did protect me."

Baze: "I protected you!"

* * *

Chirrut: "I'm one with the Force and the Force is with me. I'm one with the Force and the Force is with me. I'm one with the Force-"

Baze: *looks at Chirrut incredulously* "Really?" *looks at Cassian* "He's praying for the door to open."

Chirrut: *shit eating grin* "It bothers him because he knows it's possible."

Cassian: "I’m beginning to think the Force and I have different priorities."

Chirrut: "Relax, Captain. We’ve been in worse cages than this one."

Cassian: "This is a first for me."

Chirrut: "There is more than one sort of prison, Captain, I sense that you carry yours wherever you go."

* * *

Chirrut: *gets headbagged* "Are you kidding me with this? I'm BLIND!"

* * *

*Chirrut walks out of the downed spacecraft*

Baze: "Where are you going!?"

Chirrut: "To find Jyn!"

Baze: *sarcastically* "Good luck!"

Chirrut: "I don't need luck! I've got you!"

*Baze pauses for a moment, then grumpily follows after Chirrut*

I like that last exchange especially. You'd think with Chirrut's previous statements he would have said "I don't need luck, I have the Force." Instead he shows that he has at least as much faith in his friend as he does in an all powerful mystical energy field that binds the universe together. That's some deep friendship there.

I also like the fact that Chirrut kicks so much ass that the only thing Cassian can think to compare him to is a legendary group of Force wielding warrior monks who protected the galaxy for something like 50,000 years.

"I find that answer vague and unconvincing."
-K-2SO, upon hearing Jyn's explanation for why she has a blaster.

K-2SO
Role:
Elite Mook Turned Loyal Brawler
Group Affiliations: The Rebel Alliance, The Galactic Empire
PL 7 (90)
STRENGTH
6 STAMINA -- AGILITY -2
FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Deception 4 (+4)
Insight 4 (+4)
Intimidation 6 (+6)
Perception 4 (+4)
Technology 2 (+2)

Advantages:
Close Attack 2, Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Improved Grab, Improved Hold, Ranged Attack 4

Powers:
"Security Droid"
Protection 8 (Extras: Impervious 7) [15]
Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [30]
Features 1: May Be Put Together Easily After Being Dismembered [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative -2

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +8 (+4 Impervious), Fortitude --, Will +6

Complications:
Responsibility (Their Programming)- K-2SO proves this vulnerability, since he was initially a loyal Empire Droid.
Weakness (Magnets, Electrical Attacks)- Droids are made entirely of metal, and are thus vulnerable to certain things. They can even be shut down by losing access to their command units in starships floating above planets upon which they are deployed.
Prejudice (Droid)- Droids are not allowed in certain areas, treated like property, often have their MEMORIES WIPED, and even tortured in some weird parts of the world.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 46 / Defenses: 14 (90)

-One of the most popular characters of Rogue One was K-2SO, who represents something the fandom had been wanting for ages- the Sentient Combat Droid. An Empire Security Droid, he'd been captured and reprogrammed into serving the Rebel Alliance as a powerful enforcer, though typically Star Wars is a universe of ranged combat, and he never did much of it. In any case, he was a great snarker, voiced by Alan Tudyk (who'd rapidly become one of Disney's top recurring performers, ever since appearing in Wreck-It Ralph), and his big action scene looked AWESOME. We were used to Laser Fights and Lasersword Duels in this franchise, not "Grab guys and smash them into the command console" brutality, and it was terrific.

-The scene is great- Mr. Snark is forced to buy Cassian & Jyn some time, and so he sits there tanking laser blasts and slamming dudes into the scenery to cover for them. In one of the movie's saddest deaths, he slowly begins to falter, behaving in that "inhuman object looking human" way that's the inverse of the Uncanny Valley (but part of the same theory; inhuman objects become endearing when they react like people), and finally shuts down. The character's blunt, cynical approach to everything made him a crowd-pleaser out of combat, too.

-A KX-series Security Droid, K-2SO is incredibly strong, and can take a ridiculous amount of blaster fire before going down. This is a big contrast to most of Star Wars, in which a laser shot is either 100% fatal (guys fall down and die; even JEDI!), or a minor flesh wound (the "Han Solo gets a burned shoulder" injury)- this guy just TANKED THEM until he finally slumped over. So he's PL 7, but in a way totally different from the others on his team- he's a PL 7 high-damage BRAWLER, able to kill people with single melee attacks, and can take numerous blaster shots before falling.

My personal reasoning is that Chirrut is Force-sensitive, but he was never a Jedi. Somewhere I read a pretty good theory that the monks of Jeddha were something of a spin-off of the old Jedi Order, tasked with guarding one major source of kyber crystals, and in time they developed their own Force tradition.

That last exchange, which I love to no end BTW, also made a ton of people question if Chirrut and Baze were actually married. Personally I don't think they were, but if that was the case major kudos to the production team for adding a homosexual couple without slapping the audience in face.
