-Gryphons are one of my favourite mythological creatures, and tend to be based off of a Lion's body, with an Eagle's head, wings and front legs (replacing the Lion's entire front). Other versions include more or less Eagle, or even alter pieces entirely, depending upon the creator's own tastes or their familiarity with the myths. The reasoning behind the mix was obvious- the King of Beasts merged with the King of Birds. And thus we had a powerfully-majestic creature, maintaining the best of both worlds, and a great symbol for royalty, as well as guarding treasure.

-The Gryphon (I prefer this spelling to "Griffin") merges the best traits of a Tiger with those of an Eagle, gaining Flight, better Visual Senses, and better Perception. They're mighty PL 9 animals, packing overall better stats throughout than any Big Cat, and they'd be fearsome mounts for a character so inclined.

Range: Open Plains, Cliffs, Mountains

Encounter Groups: Wild herds of 3-25 creatures, or mounted by sentients.

-Kinda funny story about these things... Hippogriffs were originally meant to be a saying or phrase to denote the impossible- because a half-breed of a Gryphon and a Horse was impossible... because Gryphons ATE Horses. Of course, this ignores the facts that Gryphons AREN'T REAL, but it was medieval society, so people assumed they were. So this comically-impossible half-breed eventually got absorbed into the general "Fantasty Menagerie", to the point that these days, it's just its own creature, basically a horse body with bird feet (possibly the whole legs, or just the forelegs), a full-on Eagle head, and maybe feathery tails or hindquarters or something, in addition to a massive wingspan. They're almost surpassing Gryphons in popularity, thanks to the Harry Potter "Bruckbeak" character.

-A Hippogriff is basically similar to a Giant Eagle, with a few really tiny differences, namely the Beak & Talons' strength (it lacks Penetrating), the addition of natural running Speed and a Horse's Scent.

Turtles

Post by Jabroniville »

TURTLES:
-Turtles are the order Testudines, famous for their armored shells, which are part of their ribcage extended into a dome. Turtles are opportunistic omnivores, though their durability comes at a tremendous cost to speed, so they can only catch immobile or unaware prey. There are 360 living species of Turtle, varying in size from the tiny aquatic swimmers to the huge Leatherback Turtle, never mind ancient species like the Archelon. There are two suborders within the group- one retracts its neck backwards, while the other retracts to the side.

The names "Turtle", "Terrapin" and "Tortoise" can kind of be used at random depending on the location, but it's not a perfect system. The "Tortoises" are really just one group within the whole Order, and other terrestrial ones are just called Turtles. Turtles are infamously long-lived- tiny turtles can live 40-50 years easily, and the massive Tortoises can live for over two centuries! Chelonidae are the Sea Turtles, and the only ones whose limbs have evolved into flippers. Despite that, the majority of other Turtles are still aquatic.

Turtles are a bit tricky to stat out, as their key advantage is "Durability Over Speed", to the point where they barely have any defenses at all, but are impervious to harm! Though in practice, their shells are more of a Dodge/Parry structure, as it's typically used to hide their head and limbs- essentially by "turtling" they are deflecting incoming hits. So they'll often have higher Defenses than you might typically expect for an easy-to-hit species- they are easy to hit, but difficult to hit WELL.

There will be two "sets" of Turtles throughout, as there are 5-6 size groupings for them, but these will be split among aquatic and terrestrial animals! The vast majority of Turtles are aquatic in nature, getting around by swimming, so most of the terrestrial ones (but not all) will be Tortoises.

-The smallest of the turtles are tiny swimmers. The Spotted Turtle, only 5 inches long, is about this size, as are Musk Turtles, Swamp Turtles and Mud Turtles. They are so tiny that attacks are neglible, but many things could conceivably eat them.

-The next size of turtles, also very small. These Turtles are typically about palm-sized- 9-17 inches long. This includes the Black Pond Turtle, 16 Mud Turtles, 14 Map Turtles, Long-Necked Turtles, dozens of species of Sliders, Bog Turtle, Wood Turtle, most of the Scooters, 5 Chinese Softshell Turtles (known for their long nostrils), Malayan Softshell, and various species of Pond/Forest/River Turtles. 7 species of Leaf Turtles are named for their plant-like scutes. 20+ species of Asian Box Turtles are the most heavily-trafficked turtles in the world. The two Eyed Turtles have rounded "eyes" on their scutes. The Painted Turtle is the most widespread one in North America, and has the shocking ability to survive for MONTHS hibernating underwater, as they don't breathe!

-Thanks to the difference in Shrinking ranks, it's actually cheaper than the "Tiny" kind, but is overall a bit tougher.

-The Cane Turtle appears indifferent to whether or not water is nearby. A handful of varieties of Tortoise are extremely tiny as well, including many Critically-Endangered African ones like the Geometric & Serrated Tortoise. These animals are so small they're vulnerable to just about everything, but still have semi-durable shells and are stealthy enough to hide.

Many tiny Tortoises are the same size, including the Russian Tortoise, Marginated Tortoise, 6 species of Gopher Tortoises, and the Desert Tortoise. The Hinge-Backed Tortoises have a "hinge" on the rear of their shell that can fold down and protect the tail and legs.

-This is actually one of the rarest categories of Turtles, as the Asiatic Softshell Turtle is one of the few I can find around 30 lbs. There's also some species of American Softshell Turtles (like the Florida one), Magdalena River Turtle and the Common Snapping Turtle. The weirdest-looking is the Mata-Mata of South America, with its spiky body and horned nose.

-Medium-Sized Turtles stat out a bit weirdly, because they're slow and not that damaging at all, so they end up costing only a single point, but I can't really figure out where else they would gain stuff.

-Some aquatic turtles are quite large, despite living in freshwater. Most are around 40-50 lbs., including the River Terrapins, Roofed Turtle (over 55), Euphrates Softshell Turtle, African Softshell Turtle, and some of the largest Scooters. The distinctive-looking Pig-Nosed Turtles of Australia & New Guinea, and the Hickatee of Central America (fabled for its taste) are about this large, too.

-These turtles are not physically that dangerous, but are very durable, hitting PL 2.5 status.

-Only a handful of aquatic turtles reach this side- any that are bigger are in the genus of Sea Turtles, Chelonia. The Malaysian Giant Turtle weighs up to 110 lbs. The 120+ lb. Black Softshell Turtle, originally from Indian rivers, now lives exclusively in a single man-made pond in a shrine in Bangladesh. The Ridley Sea Turtle, the smallest of the Sea Turtles, is 80-110 lbs. and would have the same stats.

-These Turtles hit PL 4 defensively, owing to their massive size and shells.

Era: Modern
Range: Southern United States
Stereotypes: Angry snappers.
Colouring: Green & brown.
Size: Up to 3 feet long (40-220 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary
Diet: Fish
Tactics: Lash out from stealth with a fierce bite.

-The Snapping Turtles are famously-grouchy and ancient-looking, being spiky, lumpy animals with enormous beaks and a penchant for snapping off anything that comes too close to their mouths. They hunt by remaining still underwater, waiting for fish to float by their mouths (perhaps lured in by the wormlike tongue of the Turtle), then lashing out with great speed.

-Turtles are slow-moving, but are extremely tough- their shells also provide Defense bonuses, since it's relatively hard to actually HIT the Turtle- this is why their defenses appear rather high (it makes the Snapping Turtle PL 4.5- it's only PL 3.5 offensively, being prone to biting fingers but rather unlikely to actually kill a person). The size of the Alligator Snappers varies considerably- average weights are typically actually very low- between 30-60 lbs. But then there are rare reports of some hitting 200 lbs., with many unconfirmed (ie. "It was THIS BIG!") reporting of weights as high as 480 lbs. This could vary their durability considerably.

-Many Tortoises are very large without hitting the spectacular size of the Galapagos Tortoise- these are all about the size and weight of grown men. Tortoises are the most famously-slow of all animals (next to the Sloth, of course). They rarely move far, and eat only plants, making them unlikely attackers. Despite that, their toughness is high-end, and I still wouldn't want to get bitten by one. Their numbers include the African Spurred Tortoise (200+ lbs.), Aldabra Giant Tortoise (200-300 lbs.), and the extinct Pinta Island Tortoise, which famously had Lonesome George as its sole survivor for 40 years until his death in 2012.

-The Galapagos Tortoise is the world's largest, with multiple subspecies spread out across various islands, though only the largest hit this size- up to 700 lbs. or so! Most have a "saddleback" shell type, with extremely long necks to reach slightly higher foliage, while others have short necks and domed shells. Being so large and relatively docile, they were badly damaged by invasive species- rodents, pigs, dogs and cats all did a number until many species were endangered. Their survival was not helped by the fact that they are apparently DELICIOUS, with naval captains saying things like "after once tasting the Galapagos tortoises, every other animal food fell off greatly in our estimation". They are so huge and fat, and can live for up to a year without food or water (!!), that they were easy to just dump into ship holds as a source of future eating. Adults have no known natural predators, however- Darwin noticed that they only ever seemed to die in accidents, such as falling.

-The Galapagos Tortoise is +7 Toughness- insane for creatures of this size, but they are legitimately very hard to injure, even with bodies more exposed than those of smaller turtles.

-Giant Softshell Turtles hit over 260 lbs. regularly. The Narrow-Headed Softshell Turtles (3 species) are the same size, and are named for their puny heads... which can shoot out on retractable necks to surprise fish! The Arrau Turtle is 200 lbs.

-These Turtles start getting seriously large in size, hitting +6 Toughness despite their soft shells, which are leathery and still quite hard to pierce.
