-Ricefish & Medakas are the tiniest relatives of the Flying Fish- none are more than 8 inches long. They are eaten by just about everything, but are somewhat known in aquariums, particularly in Asia. Halfbeaks greatly resemble their Needlefish relatives, and are named for their lower jaws being much longer than their upper jaws.

-Needlefish are hilarious-looking elongated fish with extremely long, needle-like mouths and tons of pointy teeth, and don't LOOK dangerous, but their incredible swimming speeds and their tendency to leap out of the water at up to 37 mph have actually led to HUMAN FATALITIES. In 1977, a 10-year old Hawaiian boy died when one leapt out of the water and pierced his EYE. In 2007, a Vietnamese man had his heart pierced by one while fishing for sea cucumbers. They are known worldwide, with the European Garfish later giving its name to the huge Gar of North America.

-Needlefish are little threat inside the water, but their immense speed above it gives them some additional Slam damage, though that itself may fatally-injure the animal- often, their thin beaks break off inside their victims.

-Flying Fish are famous for their ability to sail out of the water at high speeds, using their enlarged pectoral fins to glide for up to 160 feet (thought catching an updraft can send them on 45-second journeys for 1,300 feet!). This is designed as an escape from aquatic predators, and that usually works... but leaves them vulnerable to avian predators, which are of course much better fliers. Barbados is named "The Land of the Flying Fish" for its numerous examples. There are 65 species overall.

-Tarpons are generally man-sized- unusually, they have swim bladders, giving them an advantage in oxygen-poor waters. They are popular game fish, despite being economically poor as a "food fish", because of their great size and spectacular fighting ability- they are spirited on the hook, and while make great leaps.

Tactics: Defend themselves using gill-clogging slime.

-Hagfish are truly unique- the only living animals to have evolved with skulls but no vertebral column. They may be among the world's most ancient vertebrates alongside Lampreys, predating the evolution of the backbone. They are typically tiny and resemble small eels, but have no jawbones. Their bodies secrete slime (giving them the name "Slime Eels") that can rapidly form ropes that allow it to slide out of the grasp of predators- the animals will form an overhand knot with their own bodies, allowing them to scrape their slimy bodies along predators and ensure escape. The slime has gill-clogging functions, and predators will release their grip so as not to suffocate.

-Hagfish have a particularly grody method of eating- they enter the mouth or anus of a dead animal and consume it from the inside-out. Others just take sea worms.

-Pike are large, predatory freshwater fish that can reach 77 lbs. Relatives include the Pickerel & Muskellunge. With numerous sharp teeth and a fighty nature, it can be dangerous to unhook them by hand, so caution is urged- Pike are some of the roughest animals to be found in freshwater lakes. They will readily attack anything up to 2/3 their own size (they are mostly made up of stomach), and will bite prey and swallow it headfirst. Pikes are cannibalistic, so their young must learn to hide quickly.

-Pikes are a lower-tier "Dangerous Fish", capable of doing damage to people but typically weighing much less.

-The Characiformes order contains 100+ species, the only famous ones of which are the Tetras & Piranhas. Most are very small, though some can get a couple feet long- these tend to lack much detail online, so I really only have the "Generic" build for the rest. Tetras are famous aquarium fish- their tiny size and bright colors make them perfect pets. The Vampire Tetras are named for their elongated fangs, which are used to spear even smaller fish. Silver Dollars are popular in the aquarium trade for their simple size and care.

"Piranha's Bite" Strength-Damage +4 [4]

"Sea Creature"
Swimming 2 (4 mph) [2]
Immunity 1 (Drowning) [1]

"Small Size" Shrinking 12 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) [25]
(-3 Strength, -1 Speed, +6 Defenses, +12 Stealth, -6 Intimidation)

Offense:
Unarmed +2 (-5 Damage, DC 10)
Bite +5 (-1 Damage, DC 14)
Initiative +6

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +7 (DC 17), Toughness -4, Fortitude +1, Will +1

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Piranha cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Frenzied)- Piranha are legendary for their rapid eating habits (though this is exaggerated). Still, it is quite possible for one to be devoured if it's injured during a frenzy.
Disabled- Fish require water to survive, and will die quickly if left out of it.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Piranha are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Piranha effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -20 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 6 (34)

Era: Modern
Range: South America
Stereotypes: Insatiable, all-devouring psychotic horde.
Colouring: Nearly any combination of colours, usually some red
Size: Up to 10 inches long (2 1/2 pounds)
Encounter Groups: Huge packs (5-300)
Diet: Anything meaty that falls into the water.
Tactics: Mass frenzied bites, pulling off whatever flesh they can.

-The Piranha is legendary for its extreme appetite and destructive tendencies, mythologized as reducing full-sized animals to skeletons in mere minutes, but much of this is by false sources. Teddy Roosevelt, a huge fan of animals, was shown these creatures while in South America, but the hosts wanted to put on a good show, so they deliberately starved the pack before dropping in a cow, resulting in Teddy's bombastic exclamations of their horrific predation, and this has stuck in the public's consciousness ever since. It is extremely rare that even whole packs would take out things as large as cattle, and this requires special circumstances- they're likely to take a nibble or two, but that's it. Of course, for your campaigns, I recommend the "Reckless Predator" approach, sending wave after wave of these suckers at anyone dumb enough to fall into the water in South America.

-A handful of attacks have proven fatal- generally from people who have fallen into the water and can't get out. Piranhas have anywhere from 30-60 species- scientists can't agree and the waterways are too numerous and distant to check.

-For stats, an individual Piranha isn't very dangerous. It's bite is painful, but does less damage than a normal human's punch (their mouths are small- their damage limited). It's when they fight en-masse that things get scary, as a frenzied pack likely hits with a Burst-Area Damage 5-8 effect, depending on the size or ferocity.

Perciformes

Post by Jabroniville »

PERCIFORMES:
-Perciformes are truly massive- this is the largest order in the entire animal kingdom, containing 41% of all bony fish. They vary in size from tiny fish less than an inch long to the 8 foot, thousand pound Giant Groupers.

Era: Modern Day
Range: All waters of the Earth.
Stereotypes: Emotionless, blank creatures.
Colouring: Any possible color, in any possible design.
Size: Up to 12 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Hordes of two to thousands.
Diet: Tiny plankton.
Tactics: Flee at all costs. "School" together for defense.

-Most perch-like fish are very small, and as "generic" as fish can get. These include the Mojarras of South America, Perch (numerous species of 1-5 lb. fish), Oceanic Angelfish, Ocean Basslets, the Anthias (colorful reef fish), Cardinalfish, the smaller Groupers, Banjofish, Chubs, and Darters, as well as most of the Snappers. The smallest of the perch is the Infantfish, which can be 1/4 inch long. Mudsuckers are barely larger, and are weird, almost immobile fish that have suckers on their bellies that let them cling to the substrate.
