haha I love the shamelessness of just re-using an entire suit and adding one thing. It's like the old "Slurpasaurs" of B-movies where they'd slap a frill on a crocodile or iguana and make them fight.

Granted it's just smart business if you have a suit that probably cost a ton to make.
No, actually. Pretty much every suit they used was maintained well enough that they were reused in later Godzilla productions. The MosuGoji suit specifically would be used later for water scenes in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, and the body would be attached to an even later, also modified Godzilla suit to portray Jirahs in Ultraman.
This is a bit of a surprise, but definitely saves money. How often did the same suit get used? Were some longer-lasting than others?

The suit that got the most work out of it was probably the original Baragon suit, which went through 4, count 'em, 4 alterations into the Ultra Series Kaiju Pagos, Neronga, Magular, and Gabora, before going BACK to Toho and being reverted to Baragon just in time for Destroy All Monsters.

Ultra Q Ep. 3: "The Gift From Space"

Post by OwOMotaros »

"The Gift From Space"

Episode Count: 3/28
First Appearance: Namegon (First Appearance), Professor Ichinotani (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

While heading to take aerial photos of the soon-to-occur eruption of Mt. Mihara, Yuriko and Jun witness an unidentified object fall into the ocean. The object would be recovered by the Coast Guard and studied by government researchers, while a Coast Guard captain attempts to explain what they know to our heroes and crowds of reports. Half a year before, Japan launched a probe to record the surface of Mars. Though the capsule made it to the planet, its transmitter failed, resulting in a failed mission. Somehow, that capsule had returned to the planet. Our trio then meets with Yuriko's scientist friend, Professor Ichinotani, who is involved in the research and believes that the capsule had been returned by Martians.

Ichinotani, alongside a panel of experts and Defense Force officials, investigate the capsule and discover; an odd, artificial fiber of unknown material, the photographs the capsule managed to take (none of which they can make heads or tails of), and a pair of golden spheres, about the size of quail eggs. While the rest of the panel believes these spheres to be a present from the Martians, the Defense Force General in charge of the panel advises caution, declaring that the capsule's contents should be kept secret for now.

Later that night, we find a bank robber, blowtorching his way into a vault. While gathering up his ill-gotten gains, he discovers the container holding the golden spheres. Believing them to be of value, he takes them and escapes to Hoshikawa Airlines, where he first bribes, and then threatens Jun to fly him to Okura Island. Jun fights back, for a time, but is eventually beaten down and forced to fly. After arriving, the thief and his waiting accomplice sneak away to a grimy cave, where he slips and drops one of the golden spheres into a bubbling cave pond. The sphere quickly grows into a massive egg, and the giant Martial Slug, Namegon emerges! Firing on the slug in fear, the two are blasted away by the creature's eye beams.

News of the monster's appearance makes its way to the Daily News, where Yuriko takes on the case over a cowardly co-worker. While being flown to the island, Yuriko receives a gift from Ippei; one of the golden spheres, attached to a necklace, which he had found after arriving for work, having been dropped during Jun's scuffle with the thief. The three, on arrival, rush into the cave to investigate, dragging a police officer in with them. They discover the two thieves' equipment and money scattered about, before finding their bodies, dead in odd positions, as if whatever force killed them had no impact, just lethality. The three are then also attacked by Namegon, retreating, while Jun uses one of the thieves' weapons to fight back. Namegon bursts through the cave entrance with little resistance, chasing the surrounding civilians toward the rocky coastline of the island. Jun, with some smart thinking, gets the slug's attention and leads it away from others, tricking it into flying off the edge into the water below, where the heavy salinity quickly dissolves it.

Later that night, the three meet again with Professor Ichinotani, getting his view on the situation. To him, the beast is a clear message from Mars; humanity's scientific efforts in space are not appreciated, and they are not ready to join the wider universe. While Ippei taunts the Martians from a nearby window, Yuriko's necklace begins growing into a second egg. Taking the initiative, Jun and Ippei toss the egg from the window, where the creature completes its' hatching. The episode ends with the beast preparing to rampage once again.

Notes: "The Gift From Space" is, to me, a great episode. The almost cosmic terror of Namegon, the calm, knowledgable presence of Professor Ichinotani, and Jun getting to engage in multiple action scenes are some really good editions to spice up the episode. The actual message of the episode is pretty good too: Humanity is not ready to join the ranks of spacefaring worlds, not until we fix our own problems first.

Complications

Personality - Namegon is a bioweapon, designed to terrorize humanity.

Disabled - As a slug-esque creature, Namegon is unable to manipulate objects, nor speak.

Weakness (Salt) - Namegon, similar to an actual slug, is vulnerable to high salinity, vaporizing into nothingness when exposed to mass amounts of salt water.

Background: Namegon, the Martian Monster. Deployed to Earth by an unknown Martian force, the two Namegon first appeared in the form of small, golden spheres, placed inside a probe that had been sent to photograph Mars by Japan. When the probe returned and the spheres were discovered, they were hidden away in a vault, where they were stolen by a low-rent thief who believed them to be expensive trinkets. While one of the spheres would be lost in the scuffle between the thief and Manjome Jun, the other would make it all the way to the thieves' cave hideout. Dropping the second sphere into a nearby hot spring while digging through their ill-gotten gains, the thieves were horrified to discover the sphere grow to immense size and release the first Namegon, which quickly killed the two. This first Namegon would be killed through the efforts of Manjome Jun, who grabbed its attention and tricked it into falling off a cliff, directly into the salty waters of the Pacific, where it melted. The second Namegon would hatch when exposed to the high heat of one of Professor Ichinotani's experiments, and while we would not witness its death, we know it would be killed in a similar process. While the creatures didn't pose a terrible threat, their rampage left a clear message from the Martians; "Stay in your lane, humies."

Notes: Namegon is quite dangerous, but due to some severe limitations, doesn't breach beyond PL 9. Physically powerful (tearing straight through their cave enclosure), and durable enough to entirely ignore the shots of the handguns used against it, Namegon's main holdups are its lacking melee capabilities and piss-poor maneuverability. Doesn't help that it's also an Ultra Q kaiju, leaving it in a waaay lower-tier setting than many future Ultra Kaiju.

Now THAT's a unique monster- a slug's body with Hypno-Toad's eyes. Of course its weakness is extremely common and makes it a trivial matter for even normal humans to defeat, but the Forceless Death Beams make it a dangerous blaster nonetheless.

Ultra Q Ep. 4: "Mammoth Flower"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"Mammoth Flower"

Episode Count: 4/28
First Appearance(s): Juran (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

Deep in the Tokyo business district, a police officer on patrol experiences what he believes to be an earthquake. The city around him begins tearing apart; roads being torn up, buildings collapsing from the inside out, etc.

Afterward, in the Daily News office, we find Jun and Ippei coming by to pick up some advertising stuff, where they find the entire office in ruins. One of the workers informs them of the "earthquake", which they find inexplicable, as no news was spread of the event. Another worker hands them their flyers, before informing them that something is floating in the nearby river. They meet up with Yuriko, who's already on the case of the earthquake. The three head out to the moat, finding some strange, root-ish object slowly moving across. The root begins lashing out, knocking water out of the river, before disappearing beneath it.

The group rush to Professor Ichinotani's lab, who deduces that the root, having pierced the stone sides of the river, is likely spreading from a seed in the center of Tokyo.

Transition, back to Tokyo, where we find several more roots tearing through an underground area, attackers, grabbing workers as if they had minds of their own. Our heroes arrive on the scene, with Jun and Ippei immediately jumping into action, stabbing one of the roots with a broken bottle and spraying a chemical agent, freeing the trapped worker just as the police arrive and open fire. The police later determine that these roots are able to drain the blood of captured victims, and, realizing the gravity of the situation, begin plans to destroy the plant.

Back at Ichinotani's, we find the Professor giving a small press conference, informing reporters of what he believes to be the source of this vicious plant; a mutated, ancient plant, having survived as a seed for centuries underneath Japan.

We come to the Daily News Office once again, in the midst of evacuation. The plant's flowering bulb has been located; directly underneath their offices. While Jun makes it outside, Ippei (and his news lady crush of the episode, Michiko) find themselves trapped in the crumbling building as Juran, the Mammoth Flower, erupts through it!

Meanwhile, at the Mammoth Flower Emergency HQ, Professor Ichinotani, alongside a Defense Force Commander and a fellow researcher, find themselves arguing about the ethics of destroying the flower now or allowing some research beforehand. Ichinotani, ethical to a fault, rebuffs his colleague's idea to delay the plant's destruction. At the same time, it continues to grow massively, sprouting right through the top of the building and splitting it straight in two, its' bulb reaching into the sky and flowering as the civilian populace and military look on in terror.

With the plant calm for the time being, soldiers are sent into the remnants of the Daily News building to search for the two trapped civilians. While doing so, they are beset by more, bloodthirsty roots, and the release of poisonous pollen, with only the civilians and half the soldiers escaping with their lives. At the same time, Jun is entrusted to deliver the prepared plant-suffocating chemical weapon to the plant from the sky, while the Defense Force attacks with flamethrowers from the base. This joint attack proves successful, and Juran wilts down into defeat.

Notes: "Mammoth Flower" is pretty good, as far as generic horror episodes go. The unrelenting force of Juran (you can really feel the force of this thing, as we see it nearly crush a civilian in half, and bulldoze straight through the Daily News building) is the only real source of terror, but it's a decently effective one. Besides that, the episode does seem to have a bit of a pacing problem. Notice how my synopsis was kinda...awkward? Like it moved about between paragraphs too quickly? The episode switches locations just as fast. It's too fast for a show like this. Still, not a bad episode.

Complications

Disabled (Plant) - Juran is a plant, not a plant kaiju, literally just a giant plant. It is unable to speak or see, cannot effectively move from its position (though can reach out with its roots), or do a variety of other basic things.

Weakness (Plant) - As a giant plant, Juran is vulnerable to all the same things as normal plants, albeit at a higher scale. Fire, chemicals, etc will all hit with increased effect.

Background: Juran, the Mammoth Flower. Originally the long-dormant seed of an extinct species of large plant life, a spontaneous mutation would cause the seed to reawaken and begin growing from its location underneath Tokyo. Its' growth would continue unabated for quite some time, only noticed by the shifting earthquakes it caused. It would become known once its roots began piercing onto the surface, tearing apart roads and building floors, piercing right through stone barriers keeping rivers coherent, and eventually attacking nearby people for their blood! Through the efforts of Jun Manjome and Ippei Togawa, the police would get their hands on one of the roots, discovering what the plant would soon develop into, and allowing them to prepare countermeasures. They wouldn't be complete before Juran surfaced, however. Tearing through the Daily News HQ, Juran's appearance would draw terrified stares from all around, as its massive blub bloomed into a glorious flower. Its time on the surface would be short-lived, quickly destroyed by a dual-pronged attack from an airborne chemical agent and flamethrowers. Thus ended the Mammoth Flower.

Notes: Juran's the first real powerhouse Ultra Kaiju we've encountered; massive size (pretty much all Ultras are only about half its height), great strength (tearing through concrete, steel, and the crust of the Earth with little difficulty), and durability, Juran could likely take on every Kaiju we've previously seen with little issue. Despite this, Juran's still not THAT strong in the grand scheme of the Ultra Series. In the modern era, it's only really notable for a newly-discovered ability; its' mutated seeds can provide the ability to grow to Ultra-sized heights, as seen with the Ultraman Z villain, Alien Barossa.

Yeah, that's a pretty cool, unique idea- give the heroes something that's a bit tricky to figure out and to deal with. Something that can't be negotiated with, either.

Ultra Q Ep. 5: "Peguila is Here!"

Post by OwOMotaros »

"Peguila Is Here!"

Episode Count: 5/28
First Appearance(s): Peguila (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

On special assignment from the Daily News, we find Manjome Jun on a ship, en route to a South Pole research base. In the midst of taking photos of the nearby icebergs and conversing with crew members, a large, smoke-covered mass flies over, knocking the ship's engine and radio systems offline. Jun retreats inside as the ship begins to get knocked around, breaking his arm in the process, before tumbling into a woman's chamber. As she tries to help him, a bag of her belongings falls, revealed to be full of…dirt? The woman is a friend of a researcher who went missing at the base three years ago, and she's headed there to spread some hometown soil in the area in his memory.

We move to the South Pole Base, sometime later, where workers are in a desperate rush to load up supplies and materials before the weather becomes too harsh to depart. The captain of the ship, against the wishes of the lead researcher, sets sail, leaving the base to transport the remaining supplies themselves. As one researcher heads to grab the remaining supplies by snowmobile, Jun is waved away from attempting to help, as his mission is clear; discover what happened to that missing researcher, Nomura. Providing him with Nomura's pocketbook, the lead researcher reveals that Professor Ichinotani had gotten in contact with him beforehand, that he knows all about his mission, and that he should trust him to solve this issue before the deaths start piling up. Taking a quick peek at the pocketbook, Jun spots a note about a strange noise…"Peguila". This thinking session is interrupted by the woman from the ship walking in, who the lead researcher introduces as Yoko Kuhara; the first female researcher at this base. While the three converse, a ruckus begins outside, as one of the heavy-duty snowmobiles is flung off the ground inside the winter storm, accompanied by the temperature dropping below -100 degrees!

With all the researchers retreating inside, Jun begins to discuss his findings in the book with them. Apparently, a heavy cold front, similar to this one, happened when Nomura went missing. Maybe he has swept away like the snowmobile. One of the other researchers seems very skeptical, believing what they just saw to be light refraction; a mirage. Jun believes it to be real, and that Nomura went out (alongside his dog) to investigate this "Peguila" that seems to be causing these incidents. Outside the room, Yoko overhears it all.

The next night, Jun attempts to sneak out to investigate, only to find Yoko attempting the same thing. Before he can question her, one of the snowmobiles inside the facility begins floating, as the massive form of Peguila approaches! The shock of this knocks Yoko unconscious for a moment, before being awoken by Jun. As the two discuss their plans, the door to the facility opens, and in floats the frozen, nearly dead body of the snowmobile researcher!

The next day, he begins to stir, mumbling about a monster out in the snow. As Yoko tries to care for him, he rises out of his bed, mumbling about Nomura, before attacking her in a fit of seeming insanity. After Jun manages to stop him, and he's put back to sleep, Yoko decides to steal a vehicle and head out looking for her friend. Of course, Jun and more of the researchers head out for her, finding her vehicle crashed, with her missing. Continuing their search, they find Yoko alongside a small dog, Saburo, who belonged to Nomura. They then discover, directly beneath them, the frozen body of Nomura, trapped beneath the ice, as Saburo's frantic barking warns of the oncoming Peguila! With a blast of his ice breath, the whole crew is blasted into the distance, snowmobile and all.

Jun wakes up, somehow alive, alongside Yoko, who he finally questions for her rash actions. Turns out, she was engaged to Nomura and only took this post to discover the truth about her late fiancée. Saburo turns up, unscathed, leading the two to question how he survived three years in the Antarctic with a bloodlusted Kaiju stomping around, with only moss to sustain himself. Meeting up with the others and retreating to the base, they discuss the attack by Peguila as the temperature drops further. Jun and Yoko reveal that inside the arctic moss is a chemical, "Peguimin H", which seems to prove hazardous to the beast, keeping Saburo from being attacked. The group rushes to prepare a weapon using the chemical before Peguila strikes the base!

Peguila makes short work of most buildings in the base, as the Peguimin H missile sits ready. With one of the researchers freaking out at the beast's approach, Jun takes over firing the missile, which proves just as effective as presented. Though they have successfully driven off the beast, their research station is in ruins, and, while the case of Nomura has been solved, it will not bring him back…

Notes: I LOOOVE this episode, not for any degree of amazing storytelling, but for the introduction of Peguila. It's one of my favorite Ultra Kaiju, and I do think it got quite a good first outing. A dangerous, unknown, smoke-covered entity terrorizing the South Pole; despite the danger, our boy Jun can't bring himself to not investigate. The cold atmosphere of the episode lends well to this investigation of murder, before ramping up in the final quarter with full-tilt Kaiju action and a desperate final attack by the heroes which only JUST manages to drive off the threat. Overall, great episode. 8.5/10. Peguila is peak Kaiju.

Complications

Nature - Peguila's pretty much an enigma in terms of motivation; attacking the research team seemingly out of malice, and attacking Japan out of revenge.

Weakness (Peguimin H) - Peguila is vulnerable to a chemical, Peguimin H, which is found in a type of antarctic moss. A small container of the stuff was able to drive Peguila from its home, as well as drive it off from its later attack on Japan.

Background: Peguila, the Freezing Monster. A native creature of the South Pole, Peguila would first encounter humans when a Japanese research station was set up on its turf. After a short period of terrorizing the base, it would kill one of the researchers, Nomura, leaving his body trapped underneath layers of ice. It would be unable to kill the man's dog, who had ingested large amounts of antarctic moss, which Peguila found poisonous. Peguila and the dog would endure three years of back and forth as the dog defended its' owner's body, before the arrival of Manjome Jun and Kuhara Yoko. While investigating the disappearance of Nomura, the two would discover the existence of Peguila, who would use the opportunity to attack their research station. Using the knowledge they had gathered, the scientists at the stations quickly put together a missile weapon utilizing the damaging chemical within the moss, which managed to drive the creature off...for now.

Notes: Now Peguila here, THIS is a Kaiju. High Strength and Durability, enough Impervious to practically ignore all conventional weaponry, still decent active defenses, Mach 1 flight speed, and a powerful effect in the Freezing Beam, with a linked Cold Blast/Incapacitating Snare combo. This does not even include his punk-ass Smokescreen, which makes him an even more vicious challenge. Peguila's certainly nothing to scoff at. Let's just appreciate this guy for a minute.

This is the first of the species listed here to actually FIGHT an Ultra, proving a great challenge to the rookie Ultraman Z, though that's much later on. Its' great design, solid powerset, and capable combat skills make Peguila one of my favorite out of the Ultra Q set.

With the half-closed eyes and smoke coming out of its mouth, it doesn't look like a menacing creature so much as it looks really, really stoned.

"Dude, I've got like . . . a total case of the munchies man . . . I just don't know what I feel like I'm in the mood for, dude . . . wait . . . I got it . . . I can totally go for some authentic Japanese right 'bout now . . . "
"My heart is as light as a child's, a feeling I'd nearly forgotten. And by helping those in need, I will be able to keep that feeling alive."

"Grow Up! Little Turtle"

Episode Count: 6/28
First Appearance: Gameron (Only Appearance), Otohime (Only Appearance), The Dragon (Only Appearance)

Plot Synopsis
Our story starts at an elementary school, with all the regular shenanigans taking place; kids throwing paper, taking notes, running through the halls, etc. We then come across one boy in the back of a classroom, taking measurements of, and feeding, a small turtle. The boy, Taro, who's got a history of lying, is raising the turtle, which he named Gameron, to take him to the mythical Dragon Palace. His stuffy teacher catches him, and sends him to the roof as punishment, keeping the turtle with him.

At the end of the school day, still waiting on the roof, Taro witnesses a bank robbery and police shootout, and goes to tell the teacher, who accuses him of crying wolf yet again. Taro runs off with his turtle, intent on proving himself correct. Commence after-hours turtle training montage. In the course of this training, Taro somehow loses his turtle for a moment and, while looking, runs into the two bank robbers from earlier, who try to escape WITH HIS TURTLE. The kid CHASES the ARMED CRIMINALS before they decide to take him captive.

We move to a few hours later, where our old friends Jun, Ippei, and Yuriko are investigating the robbery. Believing someone may have seen something from the school across the way, they head in to ask a few questions. They come across a scene of other reports, the mean teacher, and Taro's parents, as they've discovered that Taro has been taken by the thieves.

Back with Taro and the thieves, we find them having their hands full with the annoying kid and his troublesome turtle, before the truck they're hiding in is stopped at a checkpoint. While the criminals plan to shoot their way out of the situation, Taro manages to finagle the machine gun out of the hands of one of them, playing around with it as they freak out, before accidentally firing and drawing the attention of the police. All three run off, WITH TARO STILL ARMED, away from the police and throughout an amusement park. Antics ensue, and eventually, they escape the police.

The thieves move through the sewers, still followed by Taro, as we receive Taro's sleep-talking personal interpretation of the classic "Urashima Taro" Japanese fairy tale. The boy wakes up to freaked-out thief antics before realizing that his turtle has grown to a massive size, just as he dreamed! The thieves run away and turn themselves in, leading the police back to their sewer hiding place, where Taro is trying to get his turtle to take him away. Gameron proceeds to WALK THROUGH MULTIPLE WALLS before allowing Taro to ride him, with both leaving through another wall just as the police arrive.

Taro and Gameron are then seen FLYING across the cityscape. Taro asks how fast they're going, causing Gameron's SHELL TO OPEN, REVEALING A SPEEDOMETER clocking them at over Mach 3, before the two fly into the ocean. Gameron leads Taro to an unknown place, where he finds a young girl on an inexplicably floating swing. The girl, Otohime, reveals that he has arrived at the Dragon Palace, and begins messing with him through some sort of reality manipulation. Taro threatens her with his bottle of turtle medicine, which he tries to bluff her with, calling it an atom bomb. Said bomb blows up in his face, and she reappears through the smoke riding an ACTUAL atom bomb. Gameron reappears, and he and Taro take off after her. Her bomb then changes into a WHOLE DRAGON and kills Gameron with its fire breath, sending Taro falling while the girl laughs from her swing. The girl asks Taro if he'll be lying anymore, which he agrees to as she gifts him a bejeweled box before disappearing. Taro then wakes up back at school, with his parents and the school faculty around him, still holding the box. Of course, he says he was at the Dragon Palace, which they all disbelieve. He opens the box and imagines himself aging into an old man, before hopelessly pleading that he had gone.

We leave this episode back in his classroom, where everyone besides him has now taken on pet turtles, while Taro sits in the back of the room, Otohime's haunting laughter piercing his mind.

Notes: What in the fuck did I just watch? It wasn't bad, but what the hell? Ok yes, I understand it's an adaptation of an old Japanese fairy tale (albeit with a Gamera joke since Toho likes to tease Daiei), but this was just some wild shit. I really have no commentary besides disbelief. I implore you; watch this. It's so weird, you can't even hate it.

Gameron, Otohime, and The Dragon

Post by OwOMotaros »

Now, quickly, some blurbs about the three powered beings in this episode...

Image

Gameron - Gameron is effectively just Jab's Large Aquatic Turtle Build, but with Affects Others Permeate 3 & Aquatic Flight 10. He's pretty fast, but very easily dealt with by Otohime's Dragon's Fire Breath.

Image

Otohime - Otohime's just a kid with Variable (Whatever She Wants). She's untouched by everything that occurs and easily toys with Taro, despite his best efforts.

Image

The Dragon - Otohime's Dragon (which is just one of Toho's Manda props), is incredibly short-lived and very easily folds into Otohime's Variable as a Summon. Its' Fire Breath easily one-shots Gameron, but this whole scenario might just be a dream sequence, sooo…
