The Thunder Woman & Extraordinary Mythos Characters and Setting

Post by bsdigitalq »

Guess who's back? Back again? BS is back! Tell a friend!

So after a considerable hiatus from the old thread involving a lot of lurking around and quietly observing things, I have returned! I have actually been itching to return for quite some time to try my hand at making builds and sharing characters from my "Extraordinary Mythos" setting, but a few things have held me back until recently. Part of that was a search for an alternative system to Mutants & Masterminds, borne out of a combination of distaste for Green Ronin due to past events and quibbles I have with MnM on some bits. But I could not find a system that quite fit my personal taste when it comes to character building, and I have been through A LOT of them. There's lots of superhero RPGs out there that are very good and have great individual ideas and mechanics, but nothing that as a whole gelled with me like MnM has. I've even toyed with notions of my own system, but have learned that such an endeavor might be beyond my own individual ability. So here we are, back to MnM. But starting over with a brand new thread instead of reviving the old one. Beginning anew, with lessons learned and what not.

Some notes: firstly, I'm going to try and be a bit more simplistic and streamlined with some of this stuff. So character bios will be shorter, complications will not be spelled out except when needed, etc. I will also be posting at a rate of one character/build a week, so updates to this thread will be much slower and more methodical than before. It may end up being even slower than that, but regardless there will be no daily/every other day postings of builds. This is all to avoid burnout or anything like what me to stop updating the old thread. Slow and steady wins the race and all that.

Finally, this will be a combined builds and setting thread, to keep things simple and easily accessible in one single thread. And I may share characters without including a build initially. So it's gonna be all kinds of weird and interesting around here.

Extraordinary Mythos History, Organizations, People, Places & Things of Interest

I'm sticking to MnM 3E for building these characters, though I borrow a few things from Jabroniville in how he builds his characters, so if you see something, chances are I borrowed it from there. Other than that, no real house rules to speak of. Though if any are developed, this post will be updated with that info.

Anyway! I hope you guys all enjoy this thread, and here's to it continuously running uninterrupted for a long time!

Samantha West is a graduate student and research assistant pursuing her doctorate at Olympia Bay University, with the goal of becoming an archeologist. One day while studying for her degree she discovered a previously unknown temple in Greece, leading to an expedition to uncover and explore this new location. However, during exploration of the hidden site, an attack by mysterious intruders forced Samantha and the expedition to flee further in and inadvertently activate a magical device that transported them to the dimensional home of the Olympian gods of ancient Greece.

They arrived just in time to become embroiled in an attempt by the Olympian god-queen Hera to use the Gigantes to overthrow the other Olympians and replace them with a new pantheon of gods under her rule. However, Hera’s plan was thwarted when, in desperation, Samantha consumed the source of the Olympians’ divine power and intervened, turning the tide and defeating the Gigantes. In gratitude for her efforts in saving them, the Olympians allowed Samantha to retain her newly acquired divine powers, and even bestowed these powers in a separate body, giving her the choice to use them or continue to live her life as a normal human.

At first Samantha had no intention of using these powers and chose to continue living as usual. However, Hera, hellbent on revenge, pursued Samantha back to Earth, forcing the graduate student to use her alternate divinely empowered form to protect herself and everything dear to her from the mad god-queen’s vengeance, becoming Thunder Woman in the process.

Following her initial defeat of Hera and the mad god-queen’s forces, Samantha initially tried to hang up the heroic identity, but was drawn back in by the schemes of individuals such as Apotheos and the Infernal Empress, who both had a greater understanding of the value of Samantha’s powers and desired to use her as part of their ancient plans connected to the Olympian gods and other cosmic forces of reality. After this and other attempts at revenge by Hera, Samantha realized that she could not stop becoming Thunder Woman and expect the world to simply accept it and leave her alone. Dipping her toes into the world of superheroes, Thunder Woman initially took on Olympia Bay’s organized criminal elements, including the Bratva and the mysterious mad scientist Helreginn, and along the way met various other superheroes both local to her city and from around the world. Since then her life as a superhero has ballooned, and Samantha continues to struggle balancing her desires and career goals with the responsibility of her power and having an established superhero persona well known across the world, and resolving this essential conflict will be key to how she continues forward into the future.

HOORAY!! Your thread is back! I'm glad my peer pressure was able to work on you- though I hadn't asked in ages, lol.

I hear you on the system- whatever GR has done, Steve Kenson compiled the PERFECT superhero creation system, save for a few issues (what are your issues with it, anyhow?).

Thunder Woman really stands out in the "Hall of OCs" community I find on DA- the most unique looking costume and concept of the bunch (a lot of whom, to be honest, look like palette swaps of established characters). And Sam West is just the CUTEST- I adore her even more than TW, haha.

I'm surprised looking at her powers, actually- an Ice Snare? Ice Generation? I've never seen those in any of the art, and wasn't expecting to see that as a core concept!

Overall, it's interesting how she has IMMENSE raw power, but is still "only" PL 11- her final points cost pushes into the Superman/Thor tier of mega-powerhouses, implying a lot of versatility. That top-tier "Aura" ability (I didn't realize she could just walk around and use that all the time) probably helps make her super-expensive.

Didn't need to, one of those old early prods was enough. Just takes time for me to act on it. ;)

I'd say some of it is the complexity of referencing numerous stat values, especially with larger, more detailed character sheets...and yet, I prefer this sort of layout over the rather simple blocks that ICONs or MEGS uses. Also, I'm not a terribly big fan of the combat system; in my quest through the numerous superhero RPGs out there, I found I like Prowlers & Paragons the most in that regard, and though not a supers RPG, Feng Shui's combat system appealed to me. I wouldn't mind taking Feng Shui and rejiggering it for superhero stuff. I also liked the APs from MEGS and the color-coded charts from FASERIP. But in general, I've found the vast majority of supers RPGs really don't reflect superhero combat as I've seen in the comics and cartoons, and Steve Kenson's own blog posts examining episodes from Justice League and Avengers: EMH settled that for me.

From a character design perspective, MnM is basically almost perfect to me, but I wouldn't mind a slightly less crunchy, more streamlined version of it.

Thanks! Though TW's design was mainly my own creation, it's really thanks to guys like Trent and Danilo that she's really come alive the way she has.

There's a lot about TW that has yet to be shown about her, and the ice/wintry portions of her abilities are one of those. Granted, they are some of her lesser powers, but I see her using them frequently enough that I can't consider them to be pure stunts.

This build represents to me a fairly experienced TW from about midway through her timeline, where she has picked up enough experience to have a wide variety of applications for her weather-based powers. I may do some builds in order to represent her at various stages of her superheroic career, much like Invincible.

Very interesting to read, I'm looking forward to "seeing the numbers" for a lot of these characters I've been reading about on DeviantArt.

Thanks dude, appreciate it. :)

For some, this'll be my first time really figuring out some of the powers of these characters and what they can do exactly, and at what level, so it'll be a fun journey of discovery for me too.
