First Steps

Post by Sakuro »

Your awareness began in a large room lit by bioluminescent moss fixed to the ceiling. The walls, floor, and ceiling were made of age cracked stone. The floor was marked with strange symbols around a circle, whichyoue were at the center off. Six four foot tall glass canisters dotted the walls, each topped with a needle. This is where you were made. Later you learned it was called a Shaping Hall.

Unlike the born, you who are made have met your maker. Shaper D'Tan, a young man with pale skin, black hair and dark eyes. His features are sharp, angular, and have a nobleness to them. He is the most important person in the world. Or at least it feels that way to you. Also unlike the born, you know your purpose. D'Tan told you of it. That purpose drives you. It is your reason for being. Why he made you.

D'Tan gave you your name. Spent time with you. Taught you. Then he set you to a task. He had more Shaping to do. More Creations to make. The Mind was first, and as the other's were made, taught, and set to their labors it was the Mind that was tasked with coordinating the others while the Shaper worked in the ancient Shaping Hall. A week has passed since your creation. During this time D'Tan has been teaching each of you and preparing you for your eventual departure from the ancient Shaping Hall.

During that time you learn that you are on an island named Sucia. It has been barred. Quarantined. D'Tan has been stranded here after an attack at sea. You haven't traveled far from the ruins of the old Shaping Hall. You can tell that people use to live here once. There are remains of old buildings. Some swallowed up by vegetation. Others crumbled. The only one standing in the area is the Shaping Hall that you were made in.

The area around the Shaping Hall lacks resources. Remaining here is unsustainable. There was a herd of Ornks, rotund pink skinned quadrupeds with tusks that Pounce has been hunting. But their number was few. You do learn from D'Tan that Shapers made these hearty creatures as food stock, often setting them loose in wildernesses to breed when other livestock were ill suited to the environment. There aren't any edible plants in the area, so you need to move on eventually.

After a week, that day has come. D'Tan has gathered you together in preparation to depart.

OOC wrote:Shaper D'Tan has taught you a basic understanding of the world around you. He has also spent time with each of you one on one and given you some more personal attention. You each get 1 rank in 4 Skills that you do not have a rank in. D'Tan will not teach you about magic, Shaping, how to read, or the Technology Skill.

If you have the time and would like to role play this one on one, we can do that. I'll create a separate thread for playing out side scenes while the main story progresses in this thread. Otherwise a summary can be posted here, leading up to the group gathering and getting ready to move out.

Scout
HP: 1, Condition: Excited

Scout buzzed around the group excited about the departure. He was bored of the Shaping Hall and the area around it. He almost got lost exploring the area his second day out and Shaper D'Tan told him to stay close to the Shaping Hall. Seeing the same things over and over again was very boring, but Shaper D'Tan had told him so he obeyed.

The journey may be dangerous, but Scout would do his job and find the safest path for Shaper D'Tan and the others.

The Mind
HP: 1, Condition: Careful

Just above the congregation, as close to the center as it could manage, it floated. The tendrils of its side swiveled and turned as they directed a silent orchestra.

The breadth of its mind glow swept lazily through its compatriots, fleeting, probing. Checking. It needed to remain in contact with them at all times. To be aware of their locations, to make sure they never strayed too far. It lingered in particular on Pounce to make sure. She was still here. The Scout was as well. Good. It was most worried about those two once it was time to perform their full duties.

The range of its communication was still yet limited. It would grow that in time. Once it was necessary. This island was full of dangers. Beyond its edges were dangers still yet discovered. Coordination was key to survival. Communication.

It checked again, to be sure.

Then once more, to verify.

'All are here. All are present.'
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

Craze
HP: 1
CND: Fine

Being brought into the world is always a unique experience. Some came in with questions, some a curiosity for the world around them, and still others a noble goal of protection with intense attachment. Craze came into the world excited. The initial room was a bit dull with only a few glistening bottles, not quite shiny yet still enough to break the boring contents of it all. D'Tan quickly squashed the notion of going to play with them. Instinctively, Craze just knew how to fly by flapping what he later learned was called wings. It only excited him more. He didn't want to leave D'Tan, but he also felt a boredom deep down that made him want to shake things up. How though?

It didn't get much further than that when D'Tan put a stop to it. Craze didn't know why he gave such deference to his, as he would learn, creator. Somehow, he just knew not to keep going down the path of looking to cause some fun situations that D'Tan later informed him was labeled as mischief. It was best to be avoided unless used to distract from D'Tan. The crazy excitement at everything would soon earn him the name Craze. Even upon his first moments of creation he was a bit excited.

Over the next few days during his training sessions, everyone got their own despite what Craze could only assume was a shared desire to be with D'Tan, Craze was told more of his purpose. He wasn't created just for kicks. D'Tan needed an emissary and voice for those who spoke other tongues on the off chance they ran across anyone. Plus, he also needed someone to draw attention away from him every now and again. Craze was made for that. If they did run into anyone, the raven would need to know how to bluff when needed and speak charmingly, Neither of which sunk in too well despite learning just enough.

When not with D'Tan, Craze occupied himself with looking for more shiny objects not including the areas disallowed to him of course. He also had light snacks with the food stock that others had passed on eating. In his mind, D'Tan was rewarding him with all this yummy food, growing the affection all the more for the Shaper. He tried, he really did, but sometimes when food was brought back he would hide it and laugh a little to himself about the rush to find it. These little games, or mischief, got him into a little trouble with D'Tan. Crazes youth and well practice at stirring things up fed into his purpose though, so, he was kept around.

When the day finally came to roam, he didn't know how to feel. It took some explaining to convey not everyone could live off freshly or maybe longer term dead things. So,Craze did what he was told and took to the air to go with others.

Pounce!
HP: 1; Condition: Mobile

Pounce! was crouched beside the Shaper, within easy reach if he wanted. She had managed to resist the urge to simply sprawl at his feet, her normal posture when she was not in motion- she wanted to be seen as ready, alert, eager. But even so, she showed very little movement to the outward eye- a twitch of whiskers, a flick of the tail. Oh, and the chewing, gnawing on one of the last strips of smoked ornk, one of the pieces that the Shaper had not wanted. The Shaper had showed her patiently, carefully, how to dry the meat over a small fire- he seemed to prefer it that way over merely raw and bloody chunks of ornk-flesh- but Pounce! had no such compunctions. Food was food, and they were already running out here. They had to move- this too the Shaper had explained patiently, carefully.

And that her Purpose, or one of them at least. When they moved, she would scout. Along with Scout, of course, and to a lesser extent Craze, all under the watchful mind of Mind. But Scout and Craze were fliers, which the Shaper was not (though Pounce! was convinced that the Shaper COULD fly, if he wanted to- he could do ANYTHING, he was a Shaper, THE Shaper). But for now, the Shaper would walk, so it was Pounce! who would do much of the scouting for him- the others could SEE the paths, but it was Pounce who would walk them, carefully making sure that they were safe for the Shaper to walk. Nothing could hurt him, of course, or endanger him, for he was the Shaper- but this was the task that he had set for her.

Once all of the others were ready, and the Shaper seemed prepared, Pounce! rolled to her feet and padded over towards the doorway of the hall. Of all of them she had ranged the farthest, rooting through the broken and abandoned buildings in search of anything the Shaper might find useful, and hunting the dwindling herd of ornks- because the Shaper knew that she would always find her way back to him. He had explained this patiently, carefully.

But now it was time to leave this place, to go further out into the island. She had been born here, in this Shaping Hall, but it did not hold the instinctive allure of being "Home". Home was where the Shaper was. So they were going- Scout and Craze would be eyes above, Mind would coordinate, and Pounce! would walk the path, would check for scent, for useful plants and things, details the fliers might miss.

There was that odd sensation in her mind again, as she moved towards the doorway, that same feeling she had had when she went into the old broken building, when she slipped through the undergrowth in pursuit of ornks. That readiness, a coiled spring (though she didn't know what a spring was), a taut bowstring (though she didn't know what a bowstring was)- that EAGERNESS... (that sounded like a good word). Time to fulfill her Purpose...

Meat Shield
Hero Points: 1; Condition: Healthy

In between lessons from D'Tan, bodyguarding duties, and helping the others, Meat Shield spends their time honing their skills and physique (though this is also partly to relieve some boredom!). Climbing over and through the ancient Shaping Hall and its close surroundings. Leaping and running from place to place. Even into the more crumbling parts of the Hall. Several times this led to falls and injury, but their powerful regenerative capabilities soon fixed that and let them carry on as if nothing had happened.

Sometimes they burst out from different places - sometimes planned, sometimes unexpectedly - to put themselves between imagined attacks and D'Tan. For practice of course. Not just for fun.

Now that they are preparing to actually depart, they gather with the others, excited to be leaving the ancient Shaping Hall for new lands beyond. And ready to do their duty. Put themselves between harm and their Shaper to ensure they always survived.

"Are we ready to go?" they asked eagerly, their huge iridescent blue compound eye scanning their surroundings. "Which way are we going?"

Shaper D'Tan stood outside the ancient Shaping Hall. The tips of his finders stroked over Pounce's head while waiting for the other's to assemble. His dark eyes stared int the distance in deep thought. Gradually his attention drew back to the immediate area where his Creations gathered. The Mind announced that all were accounted for and Meat Shield voiced their questions. The Shaper didn't respond immediately, instead seeming to visually inspect the five creatures before speaking. D'Tan's hand languidly drew back from the feline humanoid at his side.

"To the West and going North is coastline."

A fair skinned hand rose and gestured, indicating the direction spoken of.

"Several miles South is more coastline."

That same hand made a motion to show the way South.

"We will be heading inland, North and East. Exploring as we go. Shield, you will clear brush ahead of me. Mind, you will coordinate the other's as they scout in advance of us."

The young Shaper paused, though it was apparent he had more to say. His eyes moved over the Creations, lingering briefly on each of their faces before moving on. Finally he spoke, his tone cautionary.

"Stay alert for rogues. I have already lost one Creation to them."

All of you had done at least some exploration of the area around the Shaping Hall. It was rough terrain. Not because of uneven group, but because of the vegetation. Thick thorn bushes tangled with tall grass and vines grew while. Trees ringed the area and the canopy was dense. Making it impossible to fly over them and see the ground beneath, at least most of the time. Those with the gift of flight would be forced to weave around the same vegetation that would hinder those on the ground if they were to fulfill their task and scout ahead for their Shaper. Meat Shield, for his part, was going to have his endurance tested trailblazing through that thorny brush.

OOC wrote:Craze and Pounce. You did the most early exploring. Make a Perception check. This will be for something prior to setting out.

Scout was told to stick close to the Shaping Hall after getting lost, otherwise I expect he would have been included in this.

Pounce!
HP: 1; Condition: normal

As the Shaper drew back his hand, Pounce tensed ever so slightly and gave a flick of her tail. She moved forward a pace, just setting down her forepaw lightly, as she listened to the Shaper's words. It was time to go. Even now, she felt the wash of sensory input flooding into her mind- the scents, the sounds, the shifting colors and shadows of the vegetation which lay ahead. As with every time she had stepped outside the hall, it was a bit much- there were just So Many Things to pay attention to...

>OOC: Perception check 1d20+8= 13, roll https://orokos.com/roll/947600 . Feh, terrible start but not bad enough to expend resources for reroll . Chalk it up to her being slightly overwhelmed by So much input...

The Mind
HP: 1, Condition: Tasked

Answered promptly, 'Yes Shaper D'Tan. I will not let another be lost.'

Its glow halted the lackadaisical dance, focused sharply to pierce deeply into the mental carriages of its fellow Creations. Tear through the barriers of flesh and bone, and shatter the instinctive will to resist its intrusions. Locate the closest available nerve in order to link directly into their brain stems. Interrupt the flow of neurotransmitters so it may then align them to its own. It was, overall, a painless experience for everyone.

'Initiating neural link. I have randomly chosen. [???*] is requested to test the connection. You would be required to initiate a simple word or phrase. I will redirect your transmission to the desired party.' It relayed, carefully watching for the telltale indications of foreign thought.
OOC: *Don't wanna single anyone out, whoever wants to is free take up or disregard its request. The Mind is meticulous in its preparations, but it has no real control over your free will.

Craze
HP: 1
CND: Fine

Craze mind still carried the excitement of being born. It raced with thoughts of what new shiny objects like metals oh he wished he would see more shiny metals. The ruins had a few scattered pieces, but they weren't super interesting. D'Tan's warning was heeded, but unlike some of the other creations, Craze was not super focused. During the initial training, he was assured it would come in time, but he had to work at it. The working at it was the hard bit. It was this flood of shiny metals, tasty carrion, and pranks he might pull that flowed into the Mind before forming into two words Oh shiny! when one stray gem caught Crazes eye. It wasn't targeted at anyone in particular.

The Mind
HP: 1, Condition: Accomplished

The words from Craze were received, and without a direct target it decided to relay the thought universally. The creation's internal tone and reflection was recreated perfectly for the group as a whole. 'Test concluded. All messages will be transmitted in real time from this moment onward.'

It was only after that it had a moment to personally react to the message. Did he notice something actually important?
OOC: Presume all messages aimed through the mind will reach their targets, unless Sakuro says otherwise.

Pounce was too caught up in Her Shaper and the various new stimuli the world inundated her with over the past week.

Craze, despite being excited, was able to uncover more in his exploration of the immediate area over the past seven days. His eye had been caught by a glinting in an out of the way overgrown path. Descending on the shine he found some tarnished coins. If they were cleaned up, there was a god chance they would have a nice shine to them.

Next to the coins was a skeleton draped in robes with some markings similar to the symbols on Shaper D'Tan's own. Also on the skeleton was a length of sharpened metal with a wooden base. Later, when he brought D'Tan to see what he had found, he learned that this was a knife. After D'Tan looked the scene over he took a small pouch from the skeleton and showed Craze the contents: green powder.

D'Tan told him that the powder was a living Shaper creation. Or rather, many small ones. Shapers used these 'Healing Spores' to tend on wounds. A example was given as D'Tan sprinkled a pinch of the spores on a cut that Craze had garnered during one of his experiments in mischief that didn't go so well. The cut vanished, knitting itself closed. The young Shaper then looped the pouch on a thin leather thong and gave it over to Craze.

This wasn't all that Craze found. After D'Tan told Craze a story about pirates and buried treasure, he set about rooting in the dirt in search some of the buried shinnies. Craze didn't find any gold coins, but he did find another treasure: cobble stones. The beginning of a road that, after further investigation, he discovered lead into the dense forestry to the North East.

OOC wrote:The above is some flashback material.

Craze found six bronze coins, a knife, and Healing Spores. The Healing Spores are a one use item with Heal 5. Note any of these you would like to keep on your sheet. You may also give them to other people.

Craze spots a shiny inside a building. Glittering color like a rainbow. Descending on it through a window he clamps it triumphantly in his beak. It glitters in the light. It is hard to the touch. Until it melts in his mouth. Some of it anyway. It tastes sweet.
OOC wrote:Craze didn't find a gem ... but he did find a piece of rock candy that somehow survived the ages.
D'Tan patiently waited for the Mind to conduct it's preparations and neural interfacing. Without moving his head his eyes follow the black bird bolt out of the sky and through a window in pursuit of it's prize. Slowly he drew in a breath. Held it. for a couple seconds. Then exhaled slowly.
The teenager left hand rose and make a slow chopping motion ahead of them, to the North East.

"Let's go. Craze, Scout, and Pounce, be sure to stay within range of Mind's link."
OOC wrote:D'Tan is your Shaper, but I do not want you to feel like you are being micromanaged. As such, I am going to try to have him give general assignments. "Accomplish this goal." rather than "Do this, then this, followed by that." Right now your goals are: find food/water and explore the island.

The Mind has the additional task of coordinating the other Creation while Meat Shield needs to clear brush so that D'Tan can make it through the dense thorny brush.

Craze
HP: 1
CND: Fine

Candy, yum! It was hard to decide if he preferred the candy more or having the shiny rock. One was sweet and the other was just so glistening. As the debate raged on in his mind, he nearly forgot to tell the others about what he had found. The Shaper had given him the responsibility. He didn't want to mess it up considering the various times his little failed pranks made D'Tan less than happy. Anyone able to carry a healing powder and other shinies I found earlier?, asks Craze over the link. He conveys the mental image of the various items. In his claws was one of the bronze coins. He'd need to find a place to clean it once they found water. One piece for the collection down. Now just to find a place to stash the collection. The place they were trained had some good spots, but it wasn't like they would stick around long enough for him to enjoy it.
Being a raven, I don't imagine he can carry much. So, other than the bronze coin, someone else is going to have to get the items.

The Mind
HP: 1, Condition: Considering

As the images flit through it's neural pathways and mimicked elsewhere, it considered them. Remains? Coins? Roads? Structures? It had been taught the very basics of history, but perhaps its shaper knew the story behind this place. It tried to remember.
