"Mission structure and player interaction is meant to be super dynamic in the game. Maybe you're working to infiltrate a bar where some criminals are doing their deals in the back, while at the same time another player just happened to be there getting a drink, tended to by another player just doing her civilian job. A fight breaks out, and suddenly you've got three heroes who've never interacted all brought together in this critical moment! Pretty cool, right? It's that whole feeling of 'right place, right time' that we're really trying to capture."
-Excerpt from an interview with Thomas Anderson, lead AI programmer at Maboroshi Productions.

A cool autumn breeze blows in from the harbor of Premium City, water crashing against the boats that dot the crate-covered piers. Clean and green though the city may've been, the air here was particularly unpleasant. Sharp ocean salt mixed alongside the pungent odor brought in from the numerous fishing barges docked here for the night. More expensive personal craft such as yachts and sailboats kept themselves well away to a more privately owned area further on the opposite side of the bay area.

Busy a port as it was, there were a few ships being unloaded even this late into the night. "Easy does it, easy..." A man shouted, helping to direct a crane as it navigated a red container off their vessel. Unloading had been a thankfully uneventful fair this night for the crew, no spills or crushed limbs to be seen. There was only a few more left before their shift was officially over and they were free to return home to their families.

Too eager perhaps to be getting home, the woman operating the equipment pushed just a little too hard on her controls much to the sudden panic of those below as the container began to swing. "Shit-!" She swore, jerking back on the lever in panic. A costly decisions as the chains holding the payload suddenly snapped, sending the load flying into a stack she'd carefully placed just an hour previously. Metal scraped against metal as precious cargo was spilled out onto the concrete below.

As the dust settled, a couple men rushed over to assess the damage done and try and salvage what they could. One of them, a lanky man, took off his hat and scratched his neck in exasperation "Looks like we've got a real mess on our hands this time, Frank. Ugh... Hey, what's that?"

The container that started this mess had been torn open at the side, interior shadowed and empty. Save, that is, for two glowing pinpricks of red light...

----
Moments before...
----

Operative:

In the midst of an emptied warehouse, a Dana Sonders found herself in an increasingly frustrating situation. Recently she'd been trying to track group of gangsters who were rumored to be headed by a man that sounded very much like one of her grandfather's old 'friends', the Jack of Clubs. To her misfortune however, either they were wise to her or the rumor she'd followed was just that. There seemed to be nothing here save for some rusting containers and an abandoned encampment. If there was ever anyone here doing something criminal, they were long gone.

Warlock:

It was hard to explain why Martin Spellman found himself drawn to this particular part of the city, but that was how things tended to when it came to the mystical arts. Some distance away he could hear a ship being unloaded, but his attention for the moment was drawn to some strange graffiti spray-painted along the side of a warehouse. Celtic knots made up the outline of the colorful mural, the center of which featuring what might've been a cartoonish Viking serenading a strange frothy creature that emerged from his tankard. Something about it seemed strange to the young warlock.

Octogirl:

Sometimes, it was just nice to go out and fly around after a stressful day at school in the Other World, as people called it here. Flight was one of the most common powers that people picked when they started up in this game for a reason, after all. Luckily for his character, Cherry O'Day, laws regarding airspace in Premium City were rather laxed when it came to Capes. So long as she kept herself away from the airspace set aside for commercial and private craft and didn't break the sound barrier, she was free to 'patrol' from the air as much as she'd like. From down below, she could see the city lights along with herself reflected in the waters of Freedom Bay.

Exemplar:

"Come back soon!" A Japanese man shouted as Flora Freeman left the charming little seafood shop she'd found a few weeks ago not far from the harbor. By 'finding', of course, that meant the reward she'd been given when she stopped an attempted robbery at the time. Food here within the game was an interesting experience. She knew that while laying in the pod for an extended period she'd be perfectly nourished, probably better than she could do on her own with cooking even, but her character still needed to eat as well. At least she didn't need to worry about any food allergies she had in her actual body.

Rainbow Star:

There was a decent turnout for the stream tonight as Natalie Black, the woman dressed in her full get-up hung out with viewers from the Other World while watching ships pass into the night. It was tricky to setting up a deal with the VR center that'd allow her to initially get a stream going, but the company seemed excited to make things as smooth as possible. Get more eyes on the game itself and encourage new subscriptions, likely. One requirement was that she was meant to be as 'in-character as possible', which was a little tricky when people talked about things that didn't exist back in the 2020's. Thusly, answering the 50$ 'whts ur thoughts on th new mrs prjct?' question was an especially difficult one, for numerous reasons.

Hellcat:

"Fuck-shit-ack-!" Shouted the pursenatcher as Parker Barr, better known as 'Hellcat' (Or 'Rascal', annoyingly enough) was effortlessly keeping pace. He probably could've been caught five minutes ago, but he'd actually managed to give the young hero the slip via more luck than anything else. Now here in the middle of an unloading area laid out like a maze, all she really needed to do was run him into a dead end so she could take him in peacefully. If she really wanted to, she could probably cover the whole thing in a few seconds even if he managed to loose her again. It was just a matter of time, and time was something she had in spades.

Maggie Cole

Maggie frowned. At least she thought she *would* be frowning if her body wasn't inert in a vat, dead to the world. She wasn't sure what to do with an empty building. She knew her 'quest' was to find a gang or something headed up by Jack...-something-or-other. Oh, and he was a former friend of her criminal fa... er.. grandfather, who raised her, but she looked down at a whole lotta nothing right now. Surely, the game wouldn't steer her wrong? Maybe she failed a check or something when getting information from her earlier contact or she'd done something else wrong? One of her sons might know. Not for the first time she wished she could 'phone a friend'.
The AI must've sensed her frustration because the hand-held scanner on her belt illuminated with a soft yellow pulse. The older woman chided herself, of course she should investigate!

The Operative
CND: fine HP: 1 JuryRig: 2

Scanner Suite: Setting recreation modelling analysis - Postcognition, flaw - no sound, rapid, detect electronics (postcognition)

The operative hovered over the warehouse floor, her keen eyes taking in the vacant scene. She'd engaged Ghost-mode and phased in from above confident in her cloaking and anti-grav tech to let her spy on the Jack of Club's operation. Not to be stymied by such a discovery (or lack thereof) of a seemingly-abandoned warehouse, she withdrew the mobile scanner suite and hooked it into the HUD of her suit's goggles. A complex but rapid set of eye twitches set the scanner to detecting and analyzing disturbances in the dust on the floor, recent wear patterns, cross-checked against ion distribution in the air indication size of passage and potential presence of the magnetic field of an electronic device. She set the processing computer to display most likely scenario of what occurred here. If this works, she should see outlines of people and objects, the computer would try to match builds to known people of interest, including Jack of Clubs and any two-bit local thugs that might be in the police database. It would be further augmented with neon yellow highlighting electronic equipment in the simulation as any people that were here move in a fast rewind. If this was, indeed, a base of operations she might suss out what they were doing. Or if there had been nothing but rats and squatters here, she'd learn that too. Unfortunately it'd be oddly silent, a pantomime of activity that she'd have to piece together from context clues.

Hellcat
HP: 1, LP: 1; Condition: Normal

Beneath her mask, Parker smiled just a but- as much as the mask itself would allow. She was, to some degree, toying with this guy- but she knew he was as good as caught. Once she bagged this guy, she could complete her sweep for tonight and head home- or maybe see if there was a show somewhere later; the big city had so much better options for music venues...

Somewhere else, some Other World perhaps- someone else was smiling too, for a different reason. The mundane chase (as exciting as it was too be able to just run full speed without worrying about having her legs collapse beneath her without warning) had gone on long enough-it was time to dial things up a notch.

Parker's fingers twitched, flickering through what would be meaningless gestures- the sweep of a slider bar, the turn of (the virtual representation of) a dial... Motions which echoed those being made somewhere else, within the depths of a VR pod.

Hellcat quickened her pace, her steps lengthening- the bound of a cheetah becoming cartoonish, almost impossible leaps. In a half-dozen steps she was airborne, rotating halfway through a barrel roll. At a glance she was still "running"- except that she was, running on air, and upside-down at that, her head about ten feet off the ground and her feet churning the air above. She moved to close the distance to the purse-snatcher.

"Just give up the purse, before it gets worse," sang out a voice from directly above him...

RAINBOW STAR
[HP:1] Cond: 100%

The heroine known as Rainbow Star was posted up on a building overlooking the bay where the ships pass by behind as she addresses the viewers, just having a chill evening for the most part; alert for any events in the area, but finding it to be a quiet night so far, so mainly chatting with her viewers. "Hi SpaceFanRed42, thanks for your donation! Let's see... mrs (pronouncing it 'missus') project... oh, Mars Project! I heard about a rover landing last year, not really new though, but I think space is pretty fascinating, so I hope they keep researching to do bigger and better things to explore our solar system!"

It wasn't really an answer to the question that was asked, but having to stick to the 2020s she couldn't comment on current out of game events. The answer itself was true enough though. While Natalie wasn't an enthusiast, she did like looking at starscapes, even if she didn't really get to in the city with all the light pollusion.

Operative
GM: Good roll!

It takes some time for her equipment to get to work, setting things up requiring a bit more mental effort than Maggie was ever really comfortable with. Luckily even if she didn't know what most of this stuff was meant to do, the Operative did. Once the area was properly analyzed, the imaging device kicked in allowing her to see what was once there. Initially it only seems to be picking up stray rats and the homeless woman who lived here prior, but then there's a sudden shift as men begin moving in(moving out) numerous crates full of uncertain merchandise. It goes on for a bit longer until she sees a large stocky man walk backwards back into warehouse before everything was moved. He seems to have stopped near a shipping container where he kneeled down, before getting back up and starting(exiting?) a rage where he was yelling at everyone around him, then proceeded by the phonecall which set him off.

The hologram cuts off around here, as the imaging device runs out of imperceptible clues to draw conclusive data. When the Operative investigates the container she saw the man she knew to be Jack, there appears to be a playing card slipped underneath. It's the same suite as the man, and flipped over reveals a short message; 'Better luck next time, kid.'

Hellcat
The man startles to a stop, looking up to see the taunting form of Hellcat just above him. Run ragged with exhaustion, he collapses to his knees as all momentum is lost. "Okay," he gasps out, slowly raising his hands. "Alright. You... You've got me. I-I don't wanna fight, I'll come.... Quietly."

The purse he had been holding slips from his hands, and he makes no move to run away or pull out a weapon. In the back of her mind, the young hero feels a strange sense of accomplishment for convincing the criminal to give himself up. This is, what, perhaps the twentieth time she's managed to avoid a fight? That alone was quite the achievement for any hero, let alone one fresh onto the scene in Premium City.

Rainbow Star
People in the chat seem satisfied by her answer, even the one who posed the question seems to have found her answer to be 'cute' by some measure. It was a rare moment to receive any backlash from her non-answers regarding events in the Other World, a trend thankfully continued even now.

In the distance over the water, the e-celeb is able to spot what was likely another player flying above the water. Someone either enjoying a quiet night out, or perhaps on their way to a daring rescue mission. Who could ever really say for sure?

Exemplar
Hero Points: 1; Luck Points: 3; Condition: Fine

"Thank you! I will!" she replies as she steps out of the shop with her food.

Casually ducking into a nearby alley, she teleports up onto the roof of the highest building along the harbourside, and looks out over the nighttime city. Exemplar appreciated the view while also scanning for trouble, but Emily was simply amazed by the sheer quality of detail of the VR she found herself in.

Finishing the delightful seafood, she used her psychokinesis to deposit the food container in a street level garbage can.

Then she closes her eyes and with a thought separates her perceptions from her physical body, extending her ESP out over the city. Suddenly she sees and hears from a point half a mile above her head as if she was there, and not only that, also senses the glittering auras of all of the minds in the vicinity, made tiny and blurred by distance.

She takes a moment to appreciate the view from there as well, then her ESP began darting about the city in a carefully calculated search pattern intended to cover the most area in as little time as possible, at each point stopping to scan for any problems, or failing that anything simply out of the ordinary. Anything worth investigating. Anyone in need of help...

Warlock
HP: 1; Condition: Normal

Sam had to say that wandering around the city like this was... fascinating. As Martin Spellman, he did not often find himself with so much free-time to spend on simply meandering around the "normal" parts of the city, but when you've just gotten back from a basic delivery task, it didn't hurt to appreciate the scenery on the way back.

Even if the "scenery" in question was the recreation of docks. And not just the tourist-friendly piers where one could seek out boats to rent nor the shops catering to those who wanted to to experience the historic port -- Martin was wandering down a stretch of the piers that catered to genuine cargoships. And by the Mists of Madrigal, he could even smell the stiff stench of the sea-salt and brine mixed with oil from all the heavy machinery, and the tinge of iron and steel being weathered by the ocean breeze. In Sam's opinion, the degree of attention paid to even the small details like that was impressive.

But for the most part, Martin was attracted to the magical. He couldn't help it -- it was just in his nature to be constantly pulled into the strange and arcane. In the world's lore, it was speculated that like called to like, especially with regards to the magical. That strange feeling in his gut that felt so keenly like yearning tugged Martin to the sea for whatever reason, and as a living spellbook, Martin (and Sam, over the last few months) had learned to follow it. That feeling usually meant he was going to chance upon something peculiar... something interesting.

Usually, something dangerous.

Martin stopped when that feeling settled upon the graffiti. A Danish warrior clad like a stereotypical Viking raider, sketched like a cartoon and hoisting a tankard of ale. Within the tankard appeared to be a creature made of froth, and the entire tableau was bordered by painted knotwork in the Celtic fashion. An odd combination, but Martin had knowledge of many magical traditions, and knew of the shared history between the two.

"A nixie," Martin guessed aloud, looking at the painting of the creature in the froth. "Or a nokk. No fiddle, so probably not a fossegrim... Then again, all of these are river-creatures, not sea monsters. Then again, the artist is already mixing Celtic and Scandinavian, so perhaps this creature of the sea is from elsewhere."

He reached out his hand, focusing on that sensation within him. Martin had more experience with this, but Sam was beginning to learn how to master that instinct and reach out for the powers arcane. "The Celts believed these knots were sacred symbols of protection and strength. Which begs the question: what manner of protection is this supposed to be?"

Curiosity sufficiently piqued, Sam made his decision. Energies marshaled and directed to surge towards his brow, Martin touched the graffiti mural with his hand, letting out a pulse of magic into the mural as he opened his mind and allowed himself to perceive the truth of the arcane.
OOC wrote:Martin/Warlock is intrigued by the combination of vikings and celtic knots to use Revelation of the Third Eye to better understand what's going on with this strange mural.

The song ended. "Hope you liked it. Remember to like and subscribe! Cherry-O!" She signed off on her TickTock video that she just made.

The door to her room opened and Mitch walked in. "That sounded great."

"Thanks," she said cheerfully.

"Say, did you want to go get dinner?"

[[What the hell is this?] Tim thought. [It's bad enough Mitch is always eyeballing me.] Circles appeared floating around Mitch. (Tell off) (flirt) (invite along) (shut down) He picked (shut down). The bubbles popped and disappeared.]

"I'd love to Mitch, but I can't I have a date tonight."

"Oh, oh, of course. No problem. Who's the guy?"

"I don't know him very well. Tom or Tim or something. Rachel set me up."

"Okay, I'll let you get ready."

"Thanks, Mitchy-poo." When the door closed she locked it. She looked in her mirror and said "Patrol time. Time to fly!"

There was a whooshing sound and Octogirl was in costume and flying across the city.

[[Wait, she lied to Mitch? That's new.]]

Octogirl did a few barrel rolls as she flew toward the harbor. She loved how the rippled waves reflected her image when she flew low. She could feel the sea foam on her face when she was low enough.

Exemplar
There were several interesting scenes taking place, as far as Exemplar's third eye could see. Some sort've strange yellow illusionary work over in a nearby warehouse, a mystic looking man gazing intensely at some strange grafiti that was giving of fan even weirder feeling, a crane depositing a container onto a neat stack, a group of burly looking men watching the unloading carefully, and the tail end of a chase between a speedster and a wannabe criminal. Her sight even slipped into one of the containers for a moment, catching sight of a load of foreign lagers and ales. Yet something bugged her about the crane, and her third eye slipped over just in time to notice. A link in the chain seemed a little warped. It didn't seem liable to snap on it's own, but it could be worth warning someone about it before an accident happened.

Warlock
Peering deeper at the mural, Martin discovers that nothing seems particularly magical about the image itself. It's more, there's a strange feeling in the air around him. It wasn't until he turned his own third eye upon it that he'd feel confident enough to identify it. Something about the image, silly and nonsensical as it may've been, felt akin to a warning. Did someone leave this here for him to find? If they did, why?

"Damn!" The ghostly heroine said though none outside her stealth field could hear her.
How long ago was this warehouse occupied by the gang? Any context clues on what they were doing here? e.g. building something? or if they went around a central area like the model of a heist target, studying it maybe they were planning something? etc? or just storing things?
She noted the time of the call. Later she'd hack into the closest cell towers to here to get at their log files for that call, but for right now she wanted to finish searching the building. Using mild x-ray and magnification tech she looked inside containers and inside walls and floors looking for hidden things any anything they might have left behind. [She'd also be able to see people behind walls or outside].

According to her equipment, the hologram at its last seems to date back 8 days, 13 hours, 43 mins, and 12.45 seconds ago. It's likely safe to say they were occupying the location longer than that, and they only cleared out recently. It's hard to say what exactly they were doing, but there's a fair chance they were moving something that wasn't strictly legal.

Turning her attention to the present, there seemed to be someone on the other side of the far wall. They were staring very hard in her general dirrection, but surely they couldn't actually see her. Right?

Martin frowned in thought. The mural itself wasn't magical. No spells had been cast upon it, nor were anchored to it in any fashion. But that sense of unease did not pass. This was a warning in some fashion. The knotwork was a talisman of defense, strength and resilience. It was protective and life-affirming in many Northern-European cultures. So something about the subject of the mural was what the true focus of the image's message... A cartoonish viking hoisting a tankard and singing to something in the froth.

"No such thing as coincidence. Not a guard, but a warning nonetheless," Sam/Martin muttered. Turning from it, Sam pondered whether this was aimed at Players in general, or if he (as Martin) had chanced upon another story-line generated for Players who were members of the Arcane Order. The latter was something that excited Sam more -- they were the hints of nuance and complexity that stimulated his curiosity even further.

Martin looked towards the waterfront, beyond the many buildings and stacks of shipping containers that blocked it from sight. "Trouble is coming from the water, but that is a lot of ground to cover..." he sighed.

Martin decided that he would look around the area, see if he could find any more clues to narrow down what exactly this warning was about -- whether that be more murals graffitied on walls nearby, or simply other random signs and portents. Maybe if he was lucky and the warning was being particularly obvious, Martin might run into actual Vikings!

Reading her stream chat, Natalie noticed a few viewers pointing out someone out over the water, a few saying RS should go say "hi". In previous experiences, doing such a thing was a mixed bag. Sometimes the player was a fan and excited about the experience, sometimes the player was indifferent but played along, and occasionally, the player was rude and standoffish, whether they knew who she was or not.

Still though, RS was considered an "Idol of Other World", friendly, cheerful, helpful, so it was in character to go see what the player flying out in the bay was up to. Maybe they were on a mission and wouldn't mind a team up for the stream. The fans always loved that.

Switching her flight mode to "Shooting Star" (mainly because it was visible and flashy. Seriously, it really grabbed attention) RS took off from the rooftop, flying with a wide arc, not unlike a rainbow, towards the player flying in the bay, of course following flight regulations in the process.

"Evening fellow hero!" she greets cheerily, pulling up alongside Octogirl with an idol-style salute, sort of a signature move for her. "How's the patrolling tonight? Just so you know, we are live right now." That last part was the usual sticking point where other players were on board or not.

Maggie was surprised to see someone spot her like this. She always felt like more of a spectator - a much more familiar role to the housewife. She concentrated on the oddly-dressed character. Sometimes the game lit up important NPCs that had clues or information.
