-The purple-haired, angry-looking Cupido is the Hidden Final Boss of Battle Arena Toshinden Remix, the weak port of the series to the Sega Saturn. They clearly wanted to add a bit more to the series, though she is the only unique character in this version- the Saturn sequel, URA, drops her and adds in four other unique characters. Cupido is an elite member of the Himitsu Kessha- her purpose is seemingly to rescue Uranus, and gives people cryptic advice when they face her. She is revealed to be the younger sister of Ripper from BAT URA. She is later revealed to be the mother of Subaru Shinjo from Toshinden 4, making her the ex-lover of Sho. That's a hell of a backstory for someone who only appeared in one game. It's heavily implied she was killed after the fall of the Himitsu Kessha- Sho leaves Subaru with Eiji, saying this is the only family the boy has left.

-Cupido is a Final Boss type character, being pretty good, but is most notable for the giant blade of her naginata. Her moves include a backflip kick that shoots out twin green fireballs. She can also stab people and lift & slam them to the ground, hit an anti-air rising slash ("Cannon Slash!"), and even form a purple energy barrier around her to net a temporary bonus to toughness ("Aegis Wall!").

-Ripper is the main protagonist of the Sega Saturn version Battle Arena Toshinden URA. A lone traveler shrouded in mystery, he is the older brother of Cupido from BAT Remix, the previous Saturn version. He seeks to find out Cupido's whereabouts, suspecting Sho Shinjo is responsible. He attacks and wounds Eiji in order to draw Sho out into the open. He wields twin Katar-style blades (but REALLY long) and either dashes forward with it or throws repeating stabs out.

-Ronron is another unique character to Battle Arena Toshinden URA, working on Interpol's "Toshinhei Project", investigating the tournaments. When her invention, the "Replicant" warrior, was stolen by her superior Wolf, she went off in search of it, hoping to destroy it before it could be used for more evil. Ronron wields a short stun-gun (which has been compared to a vibrator) in combat, and has a pretty unique design- it's actually not bad, though a bit "busy" with the giant glasses and red outfit- the dark skin and purple hair evoke Anthy Himemiya from Revolutionary Girl Utena, to me. She's said to suck pretty bad by YouTube playthroughs, but her Thunderball energy blast (fired either overhand or underhand, sliding along the ground like an SNK blast) is quite powerful.

-Wolf is the Final Boss of Battle Arena Toshinden URA for the Sega Saturn- a 40-something guy with a killer 'stache and a pink outfit, he wields a wooden "bokken" sword just to be a complete and utter badass in this world of swordsmen. He is Ronron's superior at Interpol, and turns out to have been responsible for the theft of her "Replicant" unit, using it for assassinations. Ronron and others later uncover this, and Wolf is defeated- killed by Ripper, the game's main hero.

-Sho is quite standard for Fighting Games- the Secret Boss who's an elite version of regular characters (much like Reptile, Smoke, Noob Saibot & Akuma all were by point). Sho is Eiji's big brother, and operates like a super-fast version of Eiji & Kayin. He was LIGHTNING QUICK in the game, and if you played as him, you could pretty much immediately circle around any enemy and back-shot him before he could get you. Cool and aloof like Sephiroth from the later Final Fantasy VII game, Sho is extremely dominant in the narrative of the series- moreso than any other character, actually- he is the trainer of Eiji & Kayin, killer of Master & Uranus, lover of Cupido, and father of Subaru (the Main Character of Toshinden 4- the only game where Sho doesn't appear). Even Eiji doesn't do QUITE as much!

-Sho is a Secret Boss in the first three Battle Arena Toshinden games, being a secret final boss in the first. The backstory is that he is the trainer of his younger brother Eiji and Eiji's friend Kayin, but suddenly disappeared without a trace. Feeling his students had reached a high enough level and no longer needed him, Sho travelled the world as "The Stranger", searching out and defeating other fighters. When he learns that Eiji has entered the Toshinden tournament, he watches him defeat Gaia. During this time (in the Saturn remake of BAT 1), he meets the Himitsu Kessha's agent Cupido- the two fall in love and have a short affair- Cupido dies in the backstory, and Sho ends up with their son Subaru.

-Sho enters the second tournament to see how strong Eiji has become- there, he defeats the mysterious Vermilion, and is enraged when the Kessha organization make clones of him- he breaks into their base and slaughters its leaders, Master & Uranus. This is actually hilariously anticlimactic to the narrative- they are personally responsible for the death of Gaia's wife & son, Uranus is the ex-lover of Duke, and more, and yet some rando comes in and executes both of them for a random slight. He's also in BAT 3 but doesn't seem to do anything in-story.

-Toshinden 4 features Subaru Shinjo as Eiji's nephew- he is the new Main Character, joining a team with his friend, and Kayin's adopted daughter. It's stated that Subaru is the son of Sho, who left him with Eiji, asking Eiji to train the boy the way Sho trained Eiji- Sho then renews his mysterious travels. Subaru's ending features a ball of light representing Sho- it's thus extremely likely that Sho (like Kayin) has died mysteriously between games.

-Sho Shinjo is elite enough to make PL 10, and could easily join the ranks of the World Warriors with that level of skill. His "Scottish Moon" is another flip-kick like Eiji's, but his shoots a fireball as well.

I'm not sure if it was done intentionally or not, but it is kind of interesting that they gave the name Gaia (a female Greek Titan) to a male character and gave Uranus (a male Greek Titan) to a female character.

It's also kind of interesting that Toshinden tried a Street Fighter III where they actually moved the storyline forward by a decent clip, introduced mostly new characters/legacy heroes, etc. They also seemed to churn these games out regularly, so it must have had some decent popularity.

-Replicant is a "Pallete Swap" Secret Boss character, which is kinda funny in a 3-D Fighter. He's an android replica of Sho Shinjo created by Ronron, but stolen by Wolf to become a ruthless killing machine. As Ronron expected it to be used for law enforcement, she was horrified. The real Sho is said to have destroyed Replicant.

-David is a counterpart of sorts to the Hidden Boss of the Battle Arena Toshinden series, Vermilion, standing out because he uses a CHAINSAW AND HANDGUN as weapons. Despite that, he's a good-natured young lad- an orphan whose parents died on his sixth birthday in a house fire. Growing up alone and in an orphanage, he was closed off from the world, but discovered that the Organization, led by Abel, was behind everything- recruiting children to their orphanages to weed out the weak and create an army of dangerous, violent warriors. David was horrified, and also found that his "pure of heart" nature made him perfect to be the vessel by which Agon Teos, the God of War Abel worshipped, would be reborn.

-David was placed in the centerpiece for the ritual, but immediately snapped, lashing out and escaping with some chainsaws he found- a daze he doesn't remember, but he slaughtered the Organization's warriors. He was kept safe by Shizuku (another new character), who joined him on his quest to defeat his captors. David was faced by a counterpart of his own- his old friend Judgement- and was forced to kill him. He disappears after his only appearance in the series, along with Shizuku, probably building a new life for himself.

-David is a bit short on skills, being a 15-year old orphan, but thankfully has a GIGANTIC CHAINSAW, not to mention a handgun. He's PL 7 with his Handgun, which is pretty good for this series.

-Despite David being a counterpart to Vermilion, he has his own Mirror Image Rival as a sub-boss- the hockey mask-wearing Jason knock-off Judgement. Wearing a snazzy yellow shirt over blue, he is a mute, chuckling monster who was once friends with David, but developed an obsession with pwoer that led him to sever his humanity and sell his soul to dark forces. Now a merciless cold-blooded killer, he is part of the Organization under Abel. David is ultimately forced to kill his former friend when they meet in the tournament, but David understands that his friend truly died years ago.

It's also kind of interesting that Toshinden tried a Street Fighter III where they actually moved the storyline forward by a decent clip, introduced mostly new characters/legacy heroes, etc. They also seemed to churn these games out regularly, so it must have had some decent popularity.
I do wonder how much it sold- obviously the first was a huge smash, and the second was a big hit, too. It seemed like they were constantly striving to have a new release come down the pike, hoping to strike while the iron was hot. But it's almost TOO fast. BAT 3 apparently came out not too long after BAT 2 did. And then Toshinden 4 took three years to come out, and scrapped most of the cast- that one feels like the third was a bomb and they wanted to wait a while and capitalize on nostalgia or shake things up with all-new characters.

-One of the few newbies in Battle Arena Toshinden 3 to be a totally unique character and not just a Moveset Clone secret, Shizuku fills a little-seen niche in Fighting Games- the "traditionally-dressed yet scantily-clad female". She's a gambler who fights using a traditional Japanese smoking pipe as a weapon, and is an initially playable character. And shockingly, despite all that aforementioned stuff (I had actually written down a lot of descriptors about her being evil before reading on!), she's actually a kind-hearted woman with a strong sense of sportsmanship and fair play! She was protective of her younger brother, and the two came across David, a runaway from the Organization- Shizuku joined the tournament to defend him. Along the way, she kills Mis Til, a counterpart of herself. She returns home, and does not show up in any other Toshinden game.

-Shizuku fights using a non-weapon, so I gave her a power-boost to reflect using a common smoking pipe as a polearm- she can use it to Fire Spin, Uppercut or create a Fire Pillar, with a lot of attacks using the element of fire. So she's one of very few characters in Toshinden who can use an Area Attack. She's fairly skilled, owing to her backstory as a gambler- they need to be pretty sharp.

-Even the new characters got Mirror Image Secret Villains in Battle Arena Toshinden 3- Shizuku, the "Gambler With a Heart of Gold", had to face the Malaysian fortune teller, Miss Til. She serves Abel in the Organization as his third-in-command (behind Vermilion), and is his personal fortune teller and confidant, giving strategic advice. Her mission is to find the dossiers on the various Toshinden tournament participants, to enable Abel's strategy by assessing strengths and weaknesses. When it comes time for the tournament, she is set against Shizuku, putting her flute against Shizuku's Japanese smoking pipe (both use non-traditional weapons in melee)... but surprisingly loses. It doesn't surprise HER, at least- she is said to have foreseen her own death, realizing she would die before the conclusion of the event, but was determined to complete her mission regardless.

-Abel, sporting a man-cleavage shirt that exposes his upper abs, is the main antagonist of Battle Arena Toshinden 3, and the leader of The Organization, putting him above even Vermilion (a Secret Boss from BAT 2). Abel is a worshipper of Agon Teos, a god of destruction, and wishes to sacrifice the Toshinden fighters in order to bring Agon into the world. Unusually for the series, he fights BARE-HANDED- the only Toshinden character to do so. He had usurped the prior leader, Veil, and taken power after Veil, who didn't believe in sacrifice, failed to bring Agon forth. Abel placed Agon's power into Veil and imprisoned him, impressing the other Organization heads. His attempts to place Agon's power into a strong human has led him to create orphanages, abducting children and placing them there to better train them into great fighters. This makes him instrumental to the story of David, among others.

-So Abel sets up a "Mirror Image" opponent for every character in BAT 3 and acts as the Sub-Boss for the game. However, most of his agents are easily killed, and Abel himself is slain in battle with Eiji Shinjo. The entirety of the Organization dies save Vermilion, who lives to be a threat in Toshinden 4.

-Unusually, Abel's fighting style is based off that of Ken & Ryu from Street Fighter series- an unarmed combatant using a Fireball, Uppercut & Hurricane Kick. I made him PL 9- enough to challenge the best heroes in the series.

-Veil is the Secret Final Boss in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, and was the predecessor of Abel in The Organization. More kind-hearted and less ruthless than Abel, he wanted to bring Agon Teos into the world but refused to engage in blood sacrifice. This caused the ritual to fail, and Abel took advantage by defeating his superior and placing Agon Teos's spirit into Veil and imprisoned him, awaiting another chance for a ritual. However, at the end of the tournament Veil breaks free and decies to enact revenge- Eiji still kills Abel in combat, however. Enraged, Veil attacks Eiji, but was himself killed. Veil's design may be drawn from Japanese metal singer Demon Kakka/Kogure, who had a similar style in clothing and makeup.

-Veil has the same moveset as Abel, but can teleport around the arena, and does slightly more damage.

-A young island boy on Puella's team in Toshinden 4, Fen Barefoot actually takes his name from the brutal anime Barefoot Gen, about a boy orphaned by the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. This one also lost his parents at a young age, but is a shirtless Brazilian kid with a pet pig named Wolfy and lived with his grandfather, making a living as a fisherman. The two helped the injured Mondo, who trained Fen in gratitude. A year later, the mysterious Genma appeared in search of Mondo- Fen's grandfather lied to him, sensing dark intentions, saying that Mondo hadn't been around, and Genma callously killed him as a result. Fen joins a team with Puella & Lancelot and seeks revenge.

-Fen Barefoot fights using a harpoon in Mondo's style, taking advantage of a long reach. He has the spinning harpoon attack, a 45-degree upward thrust, and a "Fireless Shark" attack that sends out four little energy-shark things that subtly home in on enemies.
