-So with Bucky needing to expand the universe, we also got an extra bad guy, a bit "outside" the Toads. Al Negator is a "Sleezosaur", a universally-hated race of untrustworthy beings, and faked being a mechanic to sabotage The Righteous Indignation. With his purple body and green extra bits, he stands out a fair bit and is easily the second-best villain toy after Toadborg. He's a solid PL 7-ish Blaster, but no match for any individual member of the crew.

Commander Dogstar

COMMANDER SIRIUS DOGSTAR
Created By:
Larry Hama
First Appearance: Bucky O'Hare (Episode 1, 1991)
Role: Another Good Guy
Group Affiliations: The United Animals Federation, The Indefatigable

-The cartoon series attempted to expand the Bucky universe somewhat, giving us another good guy (who also got a figure, despite being a far less important character than toyless Jenny, cuz she's a girl). Commander Dogstar is a former police officer, brought on by S.P.A.C.E. to command another frigate like Bucky's, The Indefatigable. He often gets distracted going on about heroic rhetoric, and requires his more laid-back subordinate Wolf (also an ex-cop) to bring him back. Ally Rumble Bee is the best fighter, sporting twin lasers and a body that doubles as a ballistics platform, firing a huge laser beam out of his stinger (which one-shots KOMPLEX's robot body!). Dogstar has a good sense of smell, never forgetting the scent of any criminal (remembering too late that Al Negator, who turns out to be a Toad agent, was one of them).

Defenses:

Complications:
Rivalry (Toadborg)- Though Air Marshall Toad is in charge of entire armies, he has to take orders from Toadborg, who can insult him at will.
Responsibility (The Toad Empire)- The Air Marshall is the most elite of the Toads, and must do the bidding of KOMPLEX.
Enemy (Bucky O'Hare)
Phobia (Betelgeusian Berserker Baboons)- All Toads have a deep-seated, automatic fear of Berserker Baboons. All Toads will become terrified with fright at the sight of one, and will almost certainly flee.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 11 (69)

-The Toad Air Marshall is in an interest position in Bucky O'Hare- the chief leader of the Toads most often seen, he takes orders from the A.I., KOMPLEX, and is also belittled and ordered around by Toadborg. Yet he's a field leader of sorts, but also the show's chief Butt-Monkey, frequently suffering physical harm or humiliation (something Toadborg, the more serious threat, is exempt from). In one episode, he and his two henchmen (Frix & Frax) are sent to find a giant toad in the arctic regions of a planet, slipping and sliding around mountains and having an off-screen battle involving lots of screaming and pain. A bedraggled Air Marshall returns to base successfully, but passes out when told that his quarry won't be needed after all.

-The design isn't so bad- the Mooks are fairly streamlined and standard issue in size, so this shrimpy little dude is sufficiently "Napoleon"-ized, and his big military regalia outfit makes him look like an overly-proud, "Hey Look At Me!" jackass. The warty skin adds a lot of detail and makes him look gross, too. It's a good "Third Tier Butt-Monkey Villain" design. Alas, it was his toy that may have sunk the "Bucky" line- over-ordering the Air Marshall figure (which few kids wanted) compared to the heroes resulted in ass-tons of Shelfwarmers and the failure of the toyline to catch on.

-As a fighter, he's no great shakes- any member of the heroic cast could easily house him. He typically doesn't get his hands dirty and makes orders from the safety of the Toad Mothership. He's only about PL 5-6 across the board.

All Toads will become terrified with fright at the sight of one, and will almost certainly flee. Responsibility (Arrogant)- Toadborg thinks himself invincible, and this can cost him when dealing with forced beyond his own.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 68 / Defenses: 10 (168)

-Toadborg was AWESOME. I mean, they largely just made their own Toad version of Darth Vader, but was there any kid watching this who didn't think he was the coolest motherf*cker in this series? This gigantic purple & gold roboticized monster, gravel-voiced, sinister and actually COMPETENT? He stood out completely from the other Toads, all of whom were Butt-Monkeys, and the fact that everyone in-universe treats him like a big deal put him over big-time. Only the others got humiliated; the worst that happened to Toadborg was getting trapped in a closing bay door. His only real flaw is his arrogance- power-hungry and vicious, he thinks nothing can hurt him, and unleashed a power even he couldn't handle when he got the Aldebaran cats to unleash a Demon from another dimension that nearly killed him.

-Toadborg is huge, strong, durable and the best fighter of the Toads- he's even immune to the innate fear of Betelegeusian Berserker Baboons (briefly screaming "A Baboon! HEELLLLLPPPPP!" before righting himself, realizing that his circuits render him immune to their fear). He also has guns and knockout gas that shoots from holes in his fingertips, as well as a powerful flight ability (it's a good thing all the episodes are available on YouTube, because I had this build finished before I see him suddenly fly out of his jetpack and boot rockets!).

-The mighty KOMPLEX is an Artificial Intelligence invented by the lazy, covetous Toads to make their lives easier. In the comics, the evil computer lobotomized the entire Toad race to make them its willing slaves, while in the cartoon this was made less frightening and was simply him manipulating and controlling everyone via taking over their technology (as the Toads were so lazy they let their machinery do everything for them). He turns the Toads into a conquering empire devoted to taking over the entire Aniverse. With a robotic toad head and a threatening, warbling voice, he dictated orders to his agents (showing respect only to Toadborg).

-In the final episode, KOMPLEX takes a giant Kill-O-Bot for, which also appears as the Final Boss in the arcade game. This is actually a hilariously weak Kill-O-Bot, to be honest, as he easily faces down enemy laser fire (Dogstar's gun does nothing to him), but a laser bazooka stuns him and Wolf's grenade blows off his arm. To be fair, this robot is mostly constructed from random stuff lying around KOMPLEX's lair just thrown together, and doesn't really house his actual being. He takes out most of Dogstar's crew via Missiles (which of course only hit guys' weapons and then knock them out in the backlash, because it's still a kids show), but then Rumble Bee simply turns into a living ballistics platform and one-shots him! It's actually a ridiculously easy battle that only barely goes against them to start! It does Regenerate, however, proving problematic for Bucky later. But then Bucky simply UNPLUGS HIM and that's that.

Tongue of the Fatman

TONGUE OF THE FATMAN:
Made By: Activision
Release Date: 1989

-Holy Jesus, lol. I knew I had to at least research this game after seeing a name like THAT. Tongue of the Fatman is a weirdo, garbage PC Fighting Game that's about as bad as you'd expect given that it's, well, a PC Fighting Game, but it has a bizarre "1990s alternative animation" art style and incredibly strange naming conventions that make it stand out. And shockingly, this even got a Sega Genesis port!

So the game gives you ten alien races to choose from, each with its own special moves- you can pick three to start, but unlock more by defeating them. The characters include things like a pile of green bubbles, a land shark, a furry head walking on giant arms, a bunch of squares in the shape of a guy, a giant dominatrix, and more, ending with a gigantic fat man with a mouth in his belly that opens up and tongue-lashes you. It's the kind of anarchic, gross-out mayhem that came off as really edgy and deranged at the time. Like, you can just tell the art director's entire career and life path just by looking at it: he grew up drawing vile pornography on his notepad at school, dropped out of Art School halfway through to follow his dreams, talked someone into letting him design stuff before getting fired, had an Indie Comix career where he was worshipped near and far by about twelve people, then burned out and died of a drug addiction in his mid-30s. I mean, I'm just guessing.

That said, there's energy and creativity here that other games of its era lack. If you've followed my attempts at researching the oldest Fighting Games of the '80s, nearly every single one starred "Gi Guy" and "Kung Fu Guy"... and suddenly here's a pile of bubbles fighting a fat guy with a mouth on his stomach. They're TRYING SOMETHING, you know?

The plot is that it's 2550 A.D. and you're all fighters in the arena of Mondu the Fat. He talks shit on you for the duration of the game, then challenges you for the final match. In the game, you can wager on your bouts, then earn prize money- the money is used to purchase items that you can use in fights- up to four items are allowed. Three bars rate your status- Health, Crowd Favor, and "Effectiveness of Techniques". Your opponent takes less damage if that one is low, and it lowers every time you use the same move in succession. Wait, they had an ANTI-CHEESE mechanic in 1989? Cheese was that well-known even back then? Alas, each character had only one special move each, because... well, it was 1989.

The Genesis version, renamed Slaughter Sport, has far better graphics- the PC version more or less has 1-2 frames of animation for EVERYTHING, leaving in a herky-jerky mess, but the Genesis does maintain some pretty weaksauce 16-bit graphics, putting it way above. For whatever reason, this version swaps out all but three characters with newbies, then creates extra characters just by switching the palettes, like ClayFighter 2 would do later on.

Reviews were... varied. EGM gave it 50%, but GamePro and others were like "Hey, not bad!". One thing is the genre was RIDICULOUSLY new at this point- even Street Fighter II hadn't been released! So there was really nothing else to compare it to! In retrospect, though, game mags tear this one apart. It's called one of the weirdest PC games of all time, and a few magazines have called it the worst game name ever. Well that's fair.

Tongue of the Fatman Characters:
Rex (Humanoid)- Human guy. Chi Attack.
Rubic (CyberDroid)- A literal bunch of squares and rectangles in the shape of a humanoid.
Freezer (Cryoplast)- Big blocky guy with a square head.
Edwina (Amazoid)- Dominatrix-dressing girl with a punk-rock pink mohawk.
Stump (Bi-Husker)- A big furry head with two giant, muscular arms for legs.
Slasher (Rayzor)- Shark-man with huge finned head.
Behemoth (Mammath)- Giant purple man with tiny legs.
Puff Boy (Puftian)- Giant white head with sperm/teardrop-shaped arms & legs.
Colonoid (Colonoid)- A colony of green bubbles or balls.
Mondu the Fat (Celluloid)- The Final Boss. An obese "Celluloid" with a mouth on his belly.

Sega Genesis Characters:
Rex (Swap: M.C. Fire)- Same as the original.
Edwina (Swap: Sheba)- Same as the original.
Guano (Swap: Weezil)- Tiny purple gargoyle.
Bonapart (Swap: Skinny)- Skeleton with a monstrous head.
Robochic (Swap: Brainiac)- Cyborg chicken. Years before Robot Chicken.
Stump (Swap: Buff)- Same as the original.
Ramses (Swap: El Toro)- Tiny Minotaur.
Webra (Swap: Spidra)- Black spider-lady with boobs and eight spider-legs.
Mondu the Fat- Same as the original.

MAGIC WEAPONS:
-There are a variety of weapons you can buy up with your wager money, thus increasing your power. All give you temporary bonuses that work for 2-3 rounds. They include:

* No Jump: Creates a bed of spikes over your opponent so they can't jump (Defenses -2).
* No Attack: Disables the opponent's attack buttons (Affliction 8- Fighting; Impaired/Disabled/Powerless Attacks).
* Puzzle: Reverses your opponent's controls (Affliction 8- Fighting; Impaired/Disabled Attacks). (this is one of the few Fighters to include this function, but it's definitely more common than I thought)
* Slow: Slows opponent to half-speed & cuts their jumps in half (Weaken Athletics, Affliction 8- Fighting; Impaired/Disabled Attacks, Defenses -2).
* Shield: Deflects all your opponent's blows until you choose to attack (temporary Immunity to Damage).
* Freeze: Freezes the opponent (Snare 8).
* Fade: Makes yourself invisible (Invisibility). (lol so this is why sometimes guys are invisible- I thought this was just glitching)
* Smog: Creates Poisonous cloud in front of you (Cloud Area Damage 4).
* Bees: Creates a swarm of bees that home in on the opponent... or yourself if you're not careful (Blast 4- Homing).
* Oil: Anyone who walks on it will slip (Affliction 8- Athletics; Dazed & Hindered/Stunned & Defenseless)
* Fatso: Legs you jump with the power of Mondu's bounce (Accurate Damage +1).
* Zap: Extends the range of your attacks (Reach, +2 Accuracy).

-You can also buy up either your Health or Damage via the money you've gathered so far.

-Rex is the "Generic Human" of the game, said to be one of the only humans left in the arena. He's a shirtless guy with a ponytail, and black shorts. He actually pulls off a Chi Attack of sorts, shooting a black ball of energy at his opponents as his one Special Move (this is "Atomic Breath" in the Genesis version). In the Sega Genesis version, he has much more detail. A "Player Two" version (fought when you play as Rex) has dark turquoise skin. He's also said to be a musician, but is no nice guy- he has a PhD in "Classical Torture and Dwarf Tossing".

-Rubic may be the most unique character in all of Fighting Games- a literal pile of 2D boxes in the shape of a humanoid. The only clip I've seen of him shows him managing a single Blast- a purple circle with swirling things emanating from it, before he quickly dies to a powered-up foe. But some YouTube review of the game features him firing out a missile, but that might just be a Power-Up. As a "CyberDroid", he has the usually Immunities, but is otherwise the same as other fighters.

-Slasher is another pretty inventive guy- a nearly-nude Land Shark ("... Candygram") with a gigantic fin on his head that lashes out by spinning his hands (which are giant fin-like claws) around in huge whirling cones that do Multiattack damage. I've seen him in blue or bright yellow. His race is "Rayzor"- well ain't that just clever.

-Colonoid is a literal colony of bacteria that can take any shape or form, though really just kind of hits with a solidified portion of its body as a Special Move.

TONGUE OF THE FATMAN:
Made By: Activision
Release Date: 1989

I . . . I don't . . . I can't . . . . . . . . . . WHY?
And still better than anything Activision has done in the last year at least

-Edwina is a strong, muscular woman (hnnnnssssskkkk) with either white skin and a red mohawk or brown skin and a purple mohawk. Despite her dominatrix-like leather-clad appearance, this "Amazoid" has a ballerina-esque Pirhouette as a Special Move, and can lash out with her mohawk as if it were a whip. Unlike everyone but Rex, Stump & Mondu, she returns in the Sega Genesis version. In the PC game, she has fishnet stockings and a larger top, but in the Genesis version, she wears a leather bikini with high heels. This also posits that she is 7'5" (hhhnnnnnssssssskkkk) and 220 lbs. She is the "Queen of the Fight Palace", and her race is said to have been the greatest colonists in the universe.
